Companies need to start giving shows WAY more episodes. 8 episodes is usually not enough to tell a fleshed out first season. 12 episodes would make way more sense in terms of pacing and plot progression.

@@kingsman5913 I agree that having no cool down for the plot can feel bad to watch, but that isn't what I'm suggesting. Something I find really cool is that you can see details about characters in JUST THEIR OUTLINES!! This was pointed out by someone on Tumblr, but for angels, their outlines are light gray compared to Charlie and demons, who have pitch black outlines. And for Vaggie, you can see that her outline is actually dark gray, slightly lighter than a normal demon's outline, foreshadowing that she used to be an angel! Which is just so cool if you pay really close attention to their designs!

The teeth are also a hint from what I've seen. All the people in hell have triangular teeth (kinda like saw blades), except Vaggie, who has normal teeth like everyone in from heaven. The only other exception is Charlie, who has vampire teeth, since she is half demon from her dad and half human from her mom.
The masks of executioners also have demonic teeth, but they're only masks so idk

Angel dust is the character I gravitate to as a surviving trafficked individual. From 17 till I was 19 I suffered under the pursuit of someone else's greed and lust of flesh by strangers. When it came to him saying if he just ruined himself, he wouldn't be wanted by his owner. Broke me to tears when I saw that scene. It brought solace that yes, people *know* the pain I have personally gone through. I didn't do c*ack or hard drugs, but I definitely abused myself in other ways to make the person doing this to me not want me because I'm not bringing in the money like I was in the beginning. After being lifted off the ground by just my hair, I tried desperately to find scissors after he left to cut my hair, but I wasn't successful. So I took a shower and cried as so much hair just came off my head. After I was caught in a sting operation, the life of healing from that experience. Its hard. The pain is there every day, the thought of being wasted goods all the years later, I still think. But I am greatly loved and cared for now and I'm grateful they depicted Angel Dusts story the way they did. It's very real.

I mean, as far as we’ve heard, Lilith seems at least selfish. We see her and Lute and the only things we know are:
A, she abandoned Charlie and Lucifer when they’re both emotionally unstable.
B, she has been missing for 7 years with no contact with Charlie even though Charlie constantly tries to call her. If she really cared, she wouldve at least left a way to let Charlie contact her.
C, the first time we see her in the present, she’s chilling at a beach in heaven without a care in the world as Lute is demanding to “remake” a deal she made with Adam so she can stay in heaven. It’s not really rocket science to put two-and-two together to say she’s an awful person from what we’ve seen.

They're in Hell for a reason!" But, now that I'm older, and have strayed from the faith, I'd probably enjoy it. And hey, the hotel could be seen as the newly-installed Purgatory! Idk if that's canon, but I guess I'll find out.
Edit: Oh, okay, Thomas and I had essentially the same religious experience and transition to a form of Atheist, except I was thoroughly ingrained in the faith. I like to sill believe in heaven and God, and that humanity corrupted His word. Though, I also believe in the potential of oblivion. It seems the most likely, scientifically speaking.

Im not for challenging anyone's religious beliefs if they dont force it on others, but to the thought process i would point out: "it is fiction. 'hell' is just the name of the setting, not necessarily the same one you personally believe in. In the context of the show, all the setting is doing is adding magic to the hard reality we face and the struggles of staying pure and/or redeeming yourself for past sins." If life or consciousness exists past death, why should they not be given a chance to reflect on themselves or confess to wrongdoings? Maybe it is my understanding of hell from an outside perspective, but isnt the punishment of hell meant to enlighten those who would not otherwise recognize their sins? It punishes not those who sinned, but those who refuse to accept they sinned or refuse to (sincerely) apologize for it; AKA, hell punishes those who revel in sin, and ONLY those who revel in it.
Heck, the show tackles the exact idea of hell and heaven being "forever"s through 2 songs, both mentioned in this review: "Hell is forever" expressing that exact belief that your mortal life is the one you must control, and "you didnt know" that questions the eternity of the afterlife as a general concept. Can we mortals even process "forever", especially in a context where we must "live" (remain conscious) through it? If you dont give the show itself a chance, the songs themselves might be a good way to judge when most agree they are the peak of the show, anyway.

Fans would keep watching next season to learn more about the characters after the Heaven plot was (somewhat) resolved. Looking back, a lot of primetime shows would have a fantastic first season exploring the characters but then struggle afterward (Heroes, O.C, Once Upon a Time). Vivziepop was likely trying to avoid this. Was it the best idea? We'll see.

Most of the fanbase considered Charlie, Angel Dust and Alastor to be the main trio since their presence carried the narrative of the series and being more popular than most characters. If you remove Charlie or Alastor, it won't be Hazbin Hotel without either of those two.

I feel cringe for what I'm about to say.
I'm a gay guy from the deep south, I've lived here my entire life and I've been gay since as young as 6 years old - my first crush was Peter pan.
Being a closeted gay guy my whole life, stuff like hazbin hotel and even helluva boss are extraordinarily important to me. A fictional world where almost every character are some degree of queer, and it's completely normal, is unironically crucial escapism for me. I love living vicariously through them and getting some relieving catharsis from all the gay drama.
I can't state enough how much these two shows mean to me just for the fact that I have no outlet to express my true self.

1:01 It's more Stolas becoming a main character rather than the show not focusing on the main characters. Season 2 goes on to go more in depth with every single character. The characters getting more depth made them so much better than season 1.

Its about "which characters get focus" rather than not having focus on characters. The latter half of season 2 (so far) is basically all about ozzy and fizzoroly, of which the latter and stolas basically become the main cast for the show (alongside blitzo) and M&M are left behind while loona, the weakest of the IMP cast isnt fleshed out despite being the one who needed it out of everyone. Season 2 was also just generally heavier on the melodrama than season 1, and sands some characters down too much to make them less massive assholes which ironically weakens their appeal

I have a hard time enjoying season 1 because all of the characters although funny just suck, they're just such bad people with practically no redeeming qualities. Also FYI Loona hasn't been fleshed out because her VA has been having a really tough time irl after her fiancé passed.

I personally theorize that Alastor will remain an uneasy ally for a bit, become an antagonist, but be revealed to have been forced to be an antagonist by the one that controls him, only for him to become a full blown ally, though as chaotic as he is, with his soul no longer leashed to somebody else, temporarily or permanently.

One thing I'm hoping for season 2 is Vaggie exploring what it means to be a fallen Angel which is something she and Lucifer could bond over. Two of the most important people in Charlie's life, maybe also resulting in Vaggie getting a demonic power up of some kind. Or furthering the storyline she and Carmilla have, befriending her daughters as sparring partners maybe.

Apparently Viv annonce that the Vee will be season 2 main antagoniste so she probably give them so mutch spotlight to set up for it.
I think that S1 wanted to move along the plot so that the hotel become a force to be recone with by the end (instead of the joke it was at the beguining) as well a setting thing up for s2. And that was a bit to mutch to do in 8 épisode

Yeah. I love the show but like everyone else, I fully agree that it deserved more breathing room, like 10 or even 12 episodes. But I also realise its not so much in the hands of the creators but more so a symptom of the industry and the uncertainty there is in it right now. I dont know how Viv and the rest of the team managed to get a 2nd season secured even before the first trailer for season 1, but I assume they might have been using popularity from social media teases and perhaps Helluva Boss' popularity to give them credibility and leverage in negotiations. Though of course neither of those were around when Season 1 began production with its set deal and contract, presumably back in 2020.

The Vees are confirmed to be the primary threat in Season Two, and the whole reason we got them sparsely in this one was so that they wouldn't overshadow the major plot of the impending Extermination. As a trio of the most powerful Overlords around, and Alastor having been the only one we knew about initially, the rest of them had to be shown for context as well. At the same time, if any of these characters just.. appeared randomly, people would complain about why weren't they around before, especially with how influential all of them are in the Pride ring. So I think that's a "bigger picture" situation, and with only eight episodes, could any of us.. indeed, anybody, do any better, with how much material they had to go through?
As somebody who's been involved with (and also briefly professionally worked in the games industry), I know from experience that cuts always have to be made, whether for budget, technical issues or simply to narrow the scope. The clock is always ticking, and the axe gets brought down, every time. But a good production does the best with what it's got to work with, and for that, Vivzie and company should be commended for what they've made, flaws 'n all.
Finally, while "acknowledging a problem doesn't excuse it", Adam literally complains about all the red in their clothing during the fight with Alastor. We've seen via Helluva Boss that the setting isn't JUST that, as each section of Hell has their own unique designs and palettes, so.. as our strawberry pimp himself said at the end of the pilot, we just need to stay tuned..
All in all? Great video! Well edited, solid takes, and even the things I don't agree with are presented in a fair and even-handed manner, so I can respect 'em. Kudos and keep up the good work!

THANK YOU, for making these 16:28 two points- everyone saying “oh it’s too much red” that’s the point, the characters have a main pallet it ties them together!
28:33 on the other hand here, I believe that the V’s are very obvious set ups for the second season. Though I do think that, according to some sources and a livestream or two, the supposed focus in season two, the characters and having the V’s as the antagonists, should’ve been the first season, with the second focusing on the extermination and heaven and stuff- though in the end maybe it was because of the very limited EIGHT EPIOSDES. I pray that we get more for season two

  • @gamingmoth4542

    A few things to mention...
First off... Angel was more than likely in Hell for his wrathful tendencies on top of his lustful ones. His father was a mobster and I can assume that Anthony was involved in some of his father's business. His sister Molly managed to get into Heaven (you can actually see her in the "Welcome to Heaven" song) because she probably didn't get involved into the family business.
Secondly... God does indeed exist in the series. Vizvi has drawn pictures of what he looks like. He's a very tall and slender man wearing a white suit, white hat and a fuzzy cape. He has no face but has 4 large eyes floating around his head.
Lastly... Vivzi said that there will be a character she will eventually introduce named "Root". Root is supposed to be like the "Root of all Evil". Said character will probably be even more vial than Valentino. The reason why Luci fell was because when he gave Eve the Apple he unintentionally allowed Root to start corrupting the human world.

It really speaks to just how solid the concept is for Hazbin Hotel that despite a lot of mistakes in its delivery/pacing (something that is usually a death sentence for modern animated shows) it still evoked such an overwhelmingly positive response! Your review matched a lot of my own feelings about the show, I definitely agree that season 1 felt like an amalgamation of two seasons into one, one that just didn’t have the runtime necessary to spread its focus that wide.
I see a lot of similarities between both Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss’s shortcomings, most notably Viv’s tendency to stray from the magic of her original premise as a consequence of trying to bring in an overwhelming amount of characters and adding subplots with those characters that competes with the original premise rather than works in tandem with it.
I really hope Viv brings in a developmental editor onto her team for future seasons to help make sure all her ideas get the best delivery possible. Story delivery is a totally seperate skill to creating good story and character ideas, Viv is fantastic at the latter, she just needs help from someone who knows the craft of delivery to truly elevate her stories and characters to their full potential!

I do think that they were rushed with the script though. Like, they wanted to make a 12 episode series, but they said “you get 8 to start with, and we’ll see from there”. I’m hoping that next season gets more episodes, and can slow down with the story, since it’s proven to be a hit.
And hopefully with more episodes, we get more smaller moments focused on the actual main cast of characters, and it shows how the system betrayed them.
I’m excited for season 2 though overall

HH’s biggest downfall has definitely been its limited episodes so far. I have a feeling that it wasn’t green-lit for more than eight because it was already seen as a bit of a risk for its more mature content. Season one’s reception would more than likely dictate how many episodes season two would receive (or even IF they’d allow a season two).
So yeah, once again, it sucks how art is restricted by whether or not it will receive funding.
Granted, Helluva Boss sometimes struggles with pacing and tonal whiplash too. So, I think the series would benefit if someone in the writers room helped Viv with pacing the show better.

Plus I am a tad surprised about the Stolas comment made in the video since there's actually not even that much of him. It might have felt a lot since Season 1 episode 8 released late, making S1ep7, S2ep1, and S2ep2, all of which feature Stolas and to some extent a focus on his relationship with Blitzo, come in immediate succession. But after that, Stolas is only in episodes 4 and 6. Being kidnapped throughout 4 and mostly assisting Asmodeus in episode 6. And episode 6 and 7 are basically a 2-parter focusing mostly on Fizzarolli and Asmodeus.

If you seriously read Genesis 3 about the "apple" (actually "the fruit of the Tree of the Knowldege of Good and Evil") and Eve, it gets seriously weird. God lied to Adam and Eve. The Serpent told them the truth. And verses 22-23 are seriously disturbing, and let something slip:
22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

While the extermination/heaven arc could have used some extra time to cook, it had to be the plot of season one, so Charlie+gang vould show Heaven the Hotel's premise works. Thanks to Sir Pentious, there's proof the sinners can change and Charlie can now work on helping more people without the pressure of another extermination on the hotel's doorstep.
The Vees are most likely going to be anti-redemption and they'll take the reins in season two, especially if Angel goes on to be redeemed. Val's not going to let his "toy" go without a fight. I believe Viv has confirmed that the Vees will be the main antagonists now that Adam's gone, but I'm not certain about this.
I'd also like to suggest that Lute's disgust with Charlie and Vaggie's relationship wasn't homophobia. I feel like it's more about Vaggie being an angel, although a fallen one, and Charlie being a Hellborn/Lucifer's daughter. While it's not any better, it maybe even makes it a bit worse since it can be viewed as racism from Lute's perspective, I think it adds a layer to her character. It shows she's disgusted with the pure concept of Hell, and anyone who is sympathetic towards it and it's inhabitants. She's an exterminator and probably harbours hatred for anything hell related

    • @taiga738
      @taiga738 3 месяца назад

I don't think they necessarily needed to prove that sinners could make it to heaven in season 1 to make the plot work. There are plenty of questions besides that to tackle like how people end up in heaven/hell, redemption as going into heaven vs redemption as in becoming a better person, if people should even be expected to conform to heaven's standards to be considered redeemed, etc. Charlie doesn't have a clear idea on how to help people get better and there's the struggle of finding the motivation to try in the face of how impossible it seems, which could've carried the plot while we got to see everyone bond. We missed out on a lot of that because wrapping up the extermination plotline in one season meant skipping most of 6 months when this was happening.

Interesting to note that (as it was related to me) in Islam, Lucifer (aka Iblis, aka Shaithen) is the way he is because he's an Angelic Supremacist. Which actually makes sense.
In that version of the story, God calls all his angels together and says "Behold my greatest creation- Man! Bow down and worship him."
(the following is my take on it, and not scripture.)
Lucifer takes one look at Adam and goes "Waaaaaaait a second. We're your greatest creation, remember? You made us from fire- you made that thing from mud. No way am I worshipping that thing! Who's with me?"
This of course leads to the "war in heaven", and Lucifer and his rebel angels getting kicked out. Lucifer tells God "I will prove to you that your new creation is flawed. I am going to lead as many of them as I can away from your grace." God says "If you can lead them astray, you're welcome to them."

The very shorten reason for the change in cast is there. Hazbin Hotel was always meant to be a musical series. The pilot episode had 2 sets of VAs, ones that spoke and ones that sang. In the series, they cast VAs who can do both. With it being a series with 2 songs per episode with the characters changing up singing partners (all the duets, musical lol) They needed to make sure that not only does that speaking and singing need to match, all the people singing need to sound good together. No, I will not be bringing in the logistics and finer details in my comment. Shortened simple reason for info sake.

I feel like a lot of the issues with the story could've been solved by just having a few more episodes. Hopefully since it's been pretty successful Amazon will allow them to have more episodes next season.

Helluva Boss has massively gotten better. Blitzo's gotten real character development (making peace with Fizzoroli is gradual but it helps him face his other demons) and the Midseason episode was PERFECT in every way.

I agree that a live action Hazbin Series wouldn’t be a great idea but I’d be VERY interested to see, at least as an experiment to test the quality of one, an adaptation for the stage

I like to imagine that Alastor will toy with the thought of betraying Maggie next season to get out of his deal - but in a desperate moment vs an unbeatable obstacle, when there is no hope and Maggie is ready to sacrifice herself to save her friends at the ultimate cost, he'll invoke their deal and ask her to "step back".
I guess I just really want Alastor to turn out to be as redeemable as anyone.

I kinda like how the protagonists aren’t really protagonists though, you get to learn about all the characters, not just the protagonists and I like that for some reason

Hazbin has definitely become a major guilty pleasure show for me haha! I was similar to you in that I really didn't go into Hazbin expecting to love it nearly as much as I did. I liked Helluva's first season and continue to watch the second but really don't love it. I also wasn't taken by the pilot. I thought it was a neat idea but that's it. However, I found Hazbin to be so incredibly charming and I truly enjoyed the first season. I ended up loving Angel Dust as a character and he has absolutely become a favorite of mine out of all the media I'm into in general. I also adored the music as someone who had a crazy strong Broadway phase (and admittedly still is kinda in that phase), it was such a treat to listen to. Loser Baby and Hell is Forever have been totally stuck in my head for days! My biggest issue with the show is the pacing, I just wish we had more episodes to explore these ideas in. I think the show would have benefited from saving the reveal of the dead angel till later, focusing more on each of the sinners, and using the Vees as more active villains this season but I have heard that they will be more present in the next season. I think more screen time would have fixed most of my issues but I doubt the show runners got much of a say in the amount of episodes. Despite my qualms with the show, I really loved it! Absolutely one of my favorites as of late!!

I’ll also note that I love the way they handle Alastor’s complete overpoweredness. Some stories will fail to balance their powerhouses’ abilities with story and one will end up crushing the other, but Hazbin does a good job of keeping his insane power on the periphery, instead focusing on Alastor getting by on his wits and his ability to keep everyone around him guessing. The two times we see him let loose are in episode 5, where he specifically makes a spectacle to retain society’s fear of him and to “remind everyone why I am here,” and in episode 8 with his fight with Adam.
Now, I’ve seen some people claim that Adam was too powerful for Alastor, but that’s not how I read it. Alastor has not yet shown the real upper limits of his power, but it is good to note that we don’t see them in this battle. This isn’t due to the somewhat lazy power nerfing that some shows will resort to when they need a powerhouse to lose, though. This is a good creative choice that has Alastor’s hubris lead to his downfall. He is very clearly toying with Adam, pointing out the flaws in his fighting and taunting him instead of going in for the kill. As a result, he underestimated Adam’s sheer power and how Adam only needed a few good hits in to take over the battle. Alastor was so confident in his ability that he gave up the relatively easy kill he should have had. His array of abilities is far more flexible (and arguably more powerful) than Adam’s, but he failed to keep his guard up, meaning that once Adam hit his mic-staff, there weren’t enough protections to save it - or him. Alastor has been shown to be able to fade into shadow at will, create objects, grow in size, create portals, and more, but he decided not to go all-out, underestimating the strength of his opponent and overestimating his own capabilities given the elements of his power he was using.
It’s a really well-done example of utilizing a character’s flaws to allow them to lose a battle that they by all rights should have, or at least could have, won. I’m surprised no one else is talking about it, honestly.
And yes, the era of 8-episode seasons needs to end. A lot of the issues you brought up could have been fixed if they got even a couple more episodes (or preferably Netflix’s usual count of 13 per season). That said, they did a truly great job with the 8 episodes they had.

As someone who tried SO hard to be into vivzie's work (helluva boss) and following along for a while and now has no clue what the fucking plot is supposed to be (besides the I.M.P), because of that experience, I *really* didn't want to watch hazbin hotel for the longest time. All of my friends became obsessed and fell in love with the characters while I sat on the side, resenting viv's work. My excuse was "It's not my type of show", "It doesn't look like something I'd enjoy", etc. Last month, when the finale dropped and my friends were all exploding about how awesome it is, I decided to give it a watch, and holy shit that was my whole personality for the past month. My favorite characters changed often, I've re-watched the series at least 5 times now, and I love all the little details that you can find when watching. Hell, I started recording covers for songs with my friends that I'm posting soon, and I just can't get enough of this silly little series. The plot makes sense, I understand the characters, the animation is beautiful and same with the songs, and this is something that I will not be forgetting about anytime soon, unlike viv's other work that has continued to disappoint me. I absolutely cannot wait for season 2 and I am so excited for what's to come :)

7:00 agreed on this point. I love Encanto as much as the next guy, but it’s become clear at this point that Disney musicals as a whole lost a lot of their charm when then started leaning more toward pop and less toward showtunes.

With the way that things are currently, I'd like people to shift their expectations just a bit. When a series is so episodically constricted-please treat season 1 as the 'set up' season. You don't get those more elaborative moments BECAUSE things are laser-focused on having a cohesive series of events that set up. Characters and interactions and events that were included that you think are unimportant are very likely to pop back up later on down the line if all goes well.

People on Twitter hate this show, and they make some pretty valid points at it's flaws. Then again, it's Twitter, they're mostly mad at Vivzie, and media literacy is dead.
I adored this show for what it was. It's not their fault they only got 8 episodes for season 1.
Personally, my least favorite songs were usually Charlie's. I loved More Than Anything and the reprise, though. But the ones with upbeat kicks always got me more. Another note, the songs were actually partially written by one of the members of The Living Tombstone, which is super neat. It comes out spectacularly with Hell's Greatest Dad, which honestly? Reminds me a little of Friend Like Me from Aladdin.

Not to mention that, if the average Bible Belt Christian tried to watch it, their heads would explode during the intro to Episode One. And OMG the virulent h8 that would be directed at Charlie and Vaggie, and more so at Angel Dust.

I think all of the problems with the writing could have been solved if the show was given more episodes. The story Hazbin is trying to tell is so extensive that I don’t think its a question of good and bad writing, they simply didn’t have the time to tell the story they wanted.
The episodes in a vacum are very well passed and written, its as a whole that it feels incomplete and rushed.
The show feels like if a friend showed you a series you never watched, but only showed you the main plot relevant episodes, sure they are good by themselves, but it feels like your missing the character development and the bigger picture.

The thing to note about I'm Always Chasing Rainbows is that, far from being written for the show, it is a popular Vaudeville piece from 1917 included to capture Charlie's character and mood, and possibly to save on song writing costs for the pilot.

I would add that I really love that Vaggie and Charlie's relationship is depicted as healthy. It isn't perfect, it isn't flawless, but its emotionally mature in a way I appreciate. More healthy long term queer realtionships in media please. No tortured will they/won't they, no dragged out miscommunication based drama. Just two people that support eachother and know each other and can see through the bumps in the road when they come up. I just appreciate that.

While I wish A24 greenlit more than 8 episodes, I can totally understand them being a bit adverse to going all in from the get go. This show marks a pretty big departure from what they usually produce, and is a pretty big risk for them, so I don’t blame them for wanting to test the water first. Hopefully we’ll get more episodes now that the show has proven itself.
