This is to the song Hell is for Children by Pat Benatar, one of the most important social awareness songs in history. The song, released in 1980 shined a light on the issue of child abuse. In this , Burch discusses his own experiences with child abuse at the hands of his father and how important the song was in his life. The social impact of this song was a turning point in how we discussed this taboo subject in the United States.
Favorite Lyrics from the song:
1. Love and pain become one and the same In the eyes of a wounded child
2. And you shouldn't have to pay for your love With your bones and your flesh
3. They blacken your eyes and then apologize

You guy should react to kanye west pinochio story live
Pat was a massive voice in a tiny package!
I would love for you to react to Shinedowns cover of Simple Man. One of the best covers ever done. 20 years old this year. Shinedown is still going strong. They hold the record for the most number 1s hits on the rock charts. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Plis do tupac - keep your head up
I'm going to go see if you did "Wuthering Heights" by her. I thought I heard once that she was trained in opera, but went the rock path, with that training. Here is her beautiful rendition of "Wuthering Heights" ruclips.net/video/Dx8Q9BgwBRE/видео.html
One of the greatest female voices of all time and her husband is so underrated as a guitarist..saw her live once.. incredible!
That's a guy, not a woman
@@justinmcclanahan6036 uh i hope that's a joke..
@mcgrath16511 I was replying to Skid Row, but it changed to quick & when I got through I noticed that the Skid Row wasn't there, so I deleted the comment
@@justinmcclanahan6036 gotcha!
You betcha. Along with Ann Wilson and Stevie Nicks.
Pat wrote this after reading some articles in the New York Times covering child abuse. She has performed it at every single concert since it was written. Very powerful song in a time when a lot of people weren't talking about this issue.
Edit: As soon as I wrote this comment I unpaused the video and Burch commented the same thing. Guess I should've watched first lol.
I do that quite alot...speak my mind and then see they beat me to it.
I was 12 when this came out and like you I went through this. Nothing ever was really said and nothing was ever done about it back in the 70s and I heard this and it gave me strength to keep going ahead. It was like an anthem for me
I saw Pat Benatar in concert around the time this song was released. I think Alexis mentioned how powerful Pat's voice is in this song. Pat Benatar was trained in opera, but took the rock 'n' roll path instead. She is a very petite, slender woman, and she puts everything into the vocals, and she would occasionally actually hyperventilate on stage and her band would have to fill in instrumentally while she recovered off-stage. As I have grown older, I have noticed that I now get chills every time I hear this song. Burch, I am sorry that you were a victim of abuse. This song was written for you and every child that has ever had to endure that.
Back then, child abuse “didn’t happen”. It was considered discipline. The child, the spouse, the neighbors would see nothing wrong with it. This song gave a lot of children a voice. Pat Benatar was and still is such a champion for kids and women. And such a powerful and beautiful voice delivering the message.
She and her husband (the guitar player) play this show at EVERY SINGLE SHOW as her way of bringing awareness to child abuse. Very powerful!
Props to her for this. This was a taboo subject at the time. Hit me hard at the time also, having a Dad who was extremely heavy handed. He has become my best friend. I have forgiven him many times, as that's how he was raised. I used that to mold my parenting style. I swore that I wouldn't be that parent.
There were some radio stations which refused to play this song (& Pat was a HUGE star in that period of time). Some refused because they understood the meaning ....some refused simply based on the title. (Btw, Pat is FINALLY going into the rock hall of fame this year). The guitarist is her husband Neil Giraldo...they still perform today..they've been married for 43 years.
One of my favorites from Pat. She really belts this one out, and took this song deadly serious.
Her husband (Neil Giraldo) is the lead guitarist and co-writer of their music.
“She belts this one out…”
Interesting choice of words.
@@scottgould6590 I suppose fitting in a backhanded sort of way.
Alright, thats it..go to your room and wait for your father to get home 😂😂
I just saw Pat and Neil perform this song a week ago. They are still both amazing. This song had the entire audience on their feet. Outside. In 87 degree temperatures. Pat has said that she will continue to sing this song as long as the terror continues. I was fortunate to never suffer anything like what is painted here. But there were kids that I knew and went to school with who experienced a living hell at home. This song always makes me cry for them.
Most amazing thing about this classic song is when you read the RUclips video comments on any of this posting of it whether it's studiolive you name it:
It has served as therapy for many that were abused as children and has helped many to find closure through the years
Pat Benatar was the original Lzzy Hale. That voice is like a sledge hammer.
I've seen her in concert several times, and she is just such a powerhouse on stage. This song evokes so much emotion.
This song not only gave Validation to those suffering from such actions it Opened the Eyes of millions who never really gave it any thought before. I was Lucky enough to have a wonderful Childhood and when I had the chance to see her Live in 1982 this song (Already one of my favorites) blew me away. She Plays this song at EVERY show she gives and is in her own words the most important message she ever tried to convey !
I was also ten years old in 1980 and yes it was something that was not talked about but sometimes happened daily it's good to know that times can change for the better when it comes from abuse to children thank you for your videos
You conversation just took me back to the first time I heard this in 83 . So many feelings. Made me cry 😢
I remember being at a friend's house and having her mom come in and yell at us for listening to a song saying "hell is for children" . I remember getting up enough courage to address an adult and explain the song to her. She understood after. I never will forget that.
Even more impressive is the man who was abused has become a great person and father. Forever breaking the cycle
You can definitely feel Pat's pain through the lyrics and the music. Pat Benatar is a incredible artist.
Neil "Spyder" Giraldo. Amazing guitarist/songwriter. Pat and Neil have been married for over 40yrs.
I listened to her music for years. Dude, it seems that we grew up in the same Era, we could have been neighbors
Burch, I'm so sorry to hear you were abused as a child. I could see you relive the pain while watching this video. I'm glad you had that outlet.
Wonderful choice, and thank you for some insight into your life.
Have been to 4 Pat Bennatar concerts. Best concert performer ever. Last one her voice cut out on the encore, so she gave everyone their money back and mailed us CD's. What a performer. Kudos.
WOW. That's class. And being in control of your own operation, not music companies!!
I feel you, man. Only in my township back then the cops asked my mother and me what we did wrong. I'm glad time has changed this somewhat through our hellish experiences.
I have been a huge fan of Pat Benatar since 1979 - she is amazing. I finally got to see her in concert this year (little old New Zealand is so far away for artists to come to) and her vocals are still great. I shed a tear I was so happy to see her in concert. Neil Geraldo is her long time guitarist - and also long time husband. He is amazing as well. They tour under the name Pat Benatar and Neil Geraldo nowadays. Her autobiography is also a very good read..
It was the 1 song of hers that I could only listen to once in a great while, because of the intensity of the subject matter it's about. Probably one of the most significant songs ever written in any Genre. Even to this day it hits hard at your emotions and I wasn't a abused child so for actual abused children I can't imagine the emotions they feel hearing it. This song wasn't meant to entertain you, it was meant to awaken you it had purpose.
I and my sister were abused and now doing a podcast regarding this. We should do a podcast about our lives of abuse.
I appreciate your history lesson with the songs connection to us , today and then.
Great stuff. Love the younger generation is learning of our great music.
Rock on.
Keep Rocking and Racing, love life.
Thanks for listening
Pat Benatar loves us and this song is proof of that. So are all her songs, but with this one she sends us something raw, something she feels with us...
My brain went to *Bless The Beasts And
The Children* by The Carpenters...
Be well
S.W.
Pat is a classically trained opera singer..her husband to this day is Neil Gerardo the guitar player in the band
Back in 1992, I spent the summer at the Point Dume Mobile Home Park in Malibu. And every Thursday Pat Benatar drove her daughter in for piano lessons. What a beautiful woman. It was without a doubt the best summer I ever had, until the rioting. I also jumped into the hot tub with Mick Fleetwood and his daughter. And no, he was not happy at all.
This subject is the theme of Susan Vega, “Luka”. Another brave, beautiful song about abuse. It’s powerful.
10,000 maniacs "What's the matter here?" as well. Same time period.
Pat was nominated for the Hall of Fame before but refused to accept until she and her husband Neill were inducted together. As she put it - there is no Pat Benetar without Neil Giraldo. Operatically trained with a wide vocal range she stumbled into Rock n Roll, never really considering as a career. It was Neil that inspired and brought out the best in her. Her catalog is filled with great songs. "We Belong" is about her and Neil, give it a listen
🎶🎶
The important aspect of the song is that instead of a angsty sad song, it’s full of anger to a rock beat, which is why it became popular.
This song helped pave the way to talk about abuse....only to get to current society where a movie is being shuttered in order to hide it. crazy how far we have come. Only to fall off.
I havent heard this song in years,i remember they stopped playing it on this on the radio and never knew why.I was born in 1967 so i was 12 or 13 when this came out.
Thanks for sharing this with us Burch. At the time this came out, I was a teen who had suffered emotional abuse (not physical), but the scars are still there, though faded over time. Very relatable to many of us who grew up back then.
Her opera training made her an amazing rock vocalist.
Her future husband, Neal Gilraldo of is doing the guitar work. He also did the guitar work on Jessie's Girl by Rick Springfield
Pat Benatar and Neil Geraldo, justifiably vindicated as Rock and Roll Hall Of Famers 2022 after being snubbed for years and years along with a lot more artists still waiting in the sidelines (real rock music). Saw them live at their peak mid 80s as a US NAVY sailor stationed in San Diego, good times.
This was a really important song especially at the time. And her husband was the guitarist so it really made an impression at the time
The fact that in the dressed child abuse When it was not cool to talk about it was very good it brought it out in the lime light
My favorite Pat Benatar song. Only Ann Wilson is close to Pat's vocal range. In the 3rd grade, my second best friend was abused, and my aunt noticed his painful reaction from her touch. Evan and I talked about everything, but he never told me about his stepdad. I regret not being a better friend before Evan moved to another city. I still tear up at the ".. don't tell.." lyrics. Thanks guys.
I hear some Black Sabbath "War Pigs" influence at the end with Neil's guitar work.
Great reaction guys.
I was right there with you Burch, almost the same situation and connection with this song !!!!
I was 19 when I heard this song. It instantly became my favorite, describing my childhood to a T. I cry every time I hear it.
I haven't heard that in years. So powerful.
Burch I'm so sorry you experienced that as a child This song is very touching and sad Great song though i appreciate you both
Pat Benatar was also a fashion icon, as well as one of the most prolific hit song/video stars at the height of the MTV music era.
She is on tour this year as always.
I had never really felt this song until today.
Thank you. ✌️
My favorite Pat Benatar song. Halestorm does a great cover of this song. There is also a great cover of this from the fictitious band The Relentless from the movie American Satan.
This hit hard. I also grew up being heavily abused during those times. I remember running away on multiple occasions and always wondered why there was no safe place kids could go. I remember loving Pat and this song and even played some of her songs in a band. The craziest thing is that besides the chorus, I never even knew the lyrics to this song or what it was about until watching reactions tonight.... Chills... I'm 55 and within seconds, I was instantly trasported backwards 47 years with all the emotions I had rushing back to me. Wow. I'll never look at this song the same again. I am so grateful for her writing this. If there are any new parents watching this, please understand that your actions can last a lifetime and although we may learn to push the pain away, it is never gone, and you can never take it back.
The guitarist is her husband, Neil Giraldo. They've been together since the beginning. A real solid couple still to this day! Remember, she is originally a Juilliard trained opera singer.
I run a online rock radio station and we do featured artists every Sunday afternoon with a lot of trivia, artist information and song backstories. It may interest you to know that Pat's mother was an opera singer.
Before going into a career of Rock music Pat had been accepted into Julliard. Pat Benatar was born Patricia Andrzejewski in Brooklyn and raised in suburban Lindenhurst, Long Island. Pat who sang classically, honing the powers of her 4.5-octave voice as a member of Lindenhurst High's musical theater department. Winner of four consecutive Grammy Awards for "Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female" (1980-1983) and nominated four more times in 85, 86, 88 and 89.
Pat is from Long Island, NY like me. I was also 10 when this song hit the radio. This song cause a lot of anger because many people failed to read the lyrics and thought that Pat wanted children to go to hell.
I was 21 when this came out, and he's right - NOBODY talked about it. By that year (1980) I was already out of the house - thank god. It took a long long time to process what happened in my own house of horrors as a kid growing up in the 60's. If fact I'm still doing it at 64 years old and I'll probably never be done with a process that can take a lifetime. Super powerful stuff delivered by one of the greatest female rock singers of all time. Nobody else of the planet could sing this song with as much derision and grit as Pat Benatar. Thanks for all the great commentary by Burch and the bravery in sharing part of his story.
A number of religious organizations attempted to get this song banned from the radio. I was in college ate the time of its release and it was a controversial song. People didn't discuss this topic back then.
Thanks for doing this incredibly powerful and important song. Generally recognized as a great song but under played as it is so hard to listen to without getting emotional.
Such an impassioned song from two wonderful and real people in Pat and Neil Giraldo. Still out touring today and sounding amazing. Lucky to have seen them and the band 5-6 times over the years and they just bring you in for an amazing show.
I love Pat, have since I was a child in the late 70's. Drove 10 hours to see her live. This song cause much controversy cause many never listened to it. They thought Pat was condemning children to hell.
You need to listen to some Stained, that pain music. "For you" might hit home.
First time listening. Am subscribed now. Dad thank you for being so vulnerable about this. Bless you. Both of you are great ❤
I can say this now. This song scared the hell out of me as a young boy. I sank lower to avoid the reality of what it was. 80’s was a messed up time. I got off easy I think or just never talking made it seem that way. It is a scary thing live with what you know or roll the dice and hope for the best. When your mind is fucked that is a hard decision.
Totally groundbreaking song. it took a few of us awhile to get to the lyrics....but wow. Pat totally delivers on all fronts here, lyrically and vocally. 5' of dynamite.
More Pat Benatar please… a powerhouse
Hey guys, new to the channel. Just wanted to let you know that I saw her show a couple of months ago. She said she just turned 70 and the show was awesome. She still sounds great.
I have a song request that I hope you guys can do. The name of the song is called Slippin by the late DMX. May his kind soul rest in peace 🙏. The reason I'm requesting this song is because when I was younger I was in the same spot as he was in this song. My father left me at a young age I was smart in school but my mother never cared. She was heavily into drugs. Then I was out on the streets but then God spoke to me and told me I could do better. Now I own my own Japansse domestic mechanic shop with a beautiful daughter and wife and enjoying life too the fullest. It's amazing what music can do to you. Love from Alberta Canada
Great message❤
Thank you so much for your openness…
I subscribed liked and now commenting
Be blessed
Great choice of songs, great video, great reactions...all great!
Pat is my first crush
Pat & Neil have what they call their Facebook 14. They are the 14 songs, if any are not played when they are in concert, they catch hell on Facebook after the show. They are still touring, but they usually do "Hell Is For Children" acoustic.
One of my favorite PAT BENATAR ❤...LOVE THIS SONG THE POWER OF IT
You are not the only one that this song spoke out for.. it's was my life as well.. I lost myself in music thank you...
Wow, when it comes to music from that era, I didn't think there was anything I hadn't heard, but this is a song I am unfamiliar with. And I was a big fan of Pat Benatar as well. Did you know that she is a trained opera singer as well? Amazing vocalist, and a little undervalued in my opinion. Thanks for this one!!
So glade you did this one. Pat was my childhood crush and is till my favorite female artist ever.!! ty for this. back when she released this...she used the hard rock to portray her anger with the whole story that she read.
Her husband is the genius behind the music and guitarist.
You two are my new favorite reactioners. You both pay attention to the lyrics. Subscribed!!!
Welcome aboard 😁 Thank you very much and so glad you like the channel!
Pat was a fireball and rebel from the start. It took years of delay for her Hall of Fame induction because she refused to be inducted without her husband/producer/guitarist/song writer, Neil Giraldo. He was critical to her success in the 80s and they have been a powerhouse for 40+ years now. In addition, his is a criminally under appreciated guitarist. And you are right, she can sing!!! Check out her version of "I Need a Lover", "Promises In The Dark" and "Fire and Ice". Her vocal power is amazing. Pat Benatar with Billy Squier as the opener was the first concert I ever attended. I still remember it fondly 40+ years later.
Pat trained with classical coaches, and was going to continue her training at Julliard, but went to university instead, dropping out after 1 year. She started her professional career singing in nightclubs. After a few years of this she caught the ear of music execs and signed with Chrysalis Records.
Neil Girado is the guitarist, her husband, AKA Spider!!!! Pat Benatar is one of the best to ever Sing!!!
You know, this was a moment of pause for me. It made me remember when music could sometimes be about *real* things. And, aye, as a note of understanding, Burch, I was abused too as a kid - beaten what felt like every day just for being a normal boy, in a severity that would have landed my father in trouble with the law now. And that was far more common than it ever should have been back in those days.
Dammit, I never expected to get teary eyed watching this channel. Probably shouldn't have come here right after watching Hacksaw Ridge :rueful chuckle:
One of the most powerful songs I know. SInce I heard first time - always in my playlists. If I ever get to play in a band again, definitely one of the covers to do.
I relate to this song in much the same way you did. One of my all time favorites because of that. I would love it if you checked out another band called "the Warning" which is comprised of 3 sisters and feels like 70-80's rock in many ways. There is a song called "Black Holes" that was written by one of the 3 girls after she read a story about someone who had an addiction; the song is written from the point of view of the addict. And she wrote it at the age of 13.
She also recorded Suffer the Little Children, also about child abuse. I have too close an understanding of the subject but I have recovered to the point that I no longer hear the whispers 4:38
I’m 53 and don’t think I’ve ever heard this song and I like Pat Benitar
There’s a special place in hell for those who abuse children. Pat really made you feel the intensity. Great song!!
I love her voice, she was awesome. I went through the exact same thing as Burch. I remember when that came out, and I could relate immediately
Growing up as an abused child. I remember vividly the first time I heard this song. I was so shocked someone was talking about this. I had just gotten out of my situation and into a safe place with my grandmother. Starting middle school. I love this song. I hadn't even thought of how much people was silent about this issue back then. But it wasn't talked about even if people knew. They just looked away
I believe she said at a concert that this was her most important song and only missed playing it once. She also donated all the proceeds of this song to charity. Another in this territory by a different artist is LUKA by Susan Vega.
Thank you, I hadn't heard this song in about 40 years.
Burch , That's Neil Gerardo on lead guitar & her husband.
no one should ever have to be a victim of child abuse. (sorry to hear you were a victim burch) powerful song, good on you playing this. I was lucky , neither of my parents were like that.
Terrific reaction guys!! Loved it!!! Pat Benatar has a ridiculous voice and in my opinion, she is the best female vocalist in rock. She is classically trained in opera before switching to rock, and I'm glad she did!! I remember this song coming out and was just a banger. I love the up and down tempos of it (I'm definitely a fan of time signature and tempo changes- Rush fan here). This song just rocks!!! Do some more of Pat Benatar!! You guys rock!!!
The lyrical contradiction of child abuse, as written and sung by Pat, is utter genius.
"Hell is for Hell" - Yes, as it should be, makes sense, and not at all a contradiction. Total Hell is suppose to remain in Hell.
"Hell is for children" - No, should never be, makes no sense, and is a total contradiction. Total Hell is suppose to remain in Hell!
I'm so glad you kinda schooled her about this song so wonderfully made and I really need to know has Alexis seen the live version to this which is spectacular please let me know
Patty B is one of the all time greats!!.....love her!!
Any parent who leaves a mark on their child & doesn't feel a sense of remorse after listening to Pat's Hell isn't human.
Alexis & Burch: Thank you for protecting our kids, indirectly by showcasing Benetar's powerful song.
I really appreciated you two loving people 4 doing this reaction me and my little bothers went through this although when we became young adults he forgot was only are stepfather so after us meeting up with area biology father knowing the wrong that man got but woopin dailly and we never tallk are mother again
off one of my fav lp's
