    > Amps: Pete Townsend uses Fender Vibro-King amps, which are 60-watt (two 6L6s) combo amps with three 10-inch speakers. He runs his amps with a 2×12 extension cab underneath each, and has four stacks: “The front two stacks are used through the show, while the rear stacks are spares.” Apparently he’s been using these amps since 1998. Here’s a quote from the 2003 Fender catalog: “They do exactly what I need. Remember that the first Marshall amps were very close emulations themselves of the Fender amps I first used - and which I asked Jim Marshall to make ‘10 times as loud!’ Today, this rig fills every hall I come across. There are very few products Fender has made - even in bad times - which were ugly. This amplifier is so pretty I have one in my living room next to the expensive furniture. It reminds me why I wanted to play guitar in the first place. I thought I looked prettier with a guitar. I do. But with a Fender Strat and a Vibro-King I’m as cool, as irresistible as James Dean.”

    This amp actually has a kind of 'master volume' feature: if you turn the bass, mid, and treble each all the way down, then turn the Volume most of the way up or all the way up, each of the bass, mid and treble pots become VOLUME pots, completely controlling volume levels--even to 'bedroom' status. You may not get the perfect equalization you'd like, but you will be shocked at what you CAN get.

    The best blues amp I have ever played. One of the warmer offerings although that strident tonè in tbe beginning was not the best representation of how that amp sounds. You turn it up but keep you guitar volume down and never passed 8 and 1/2. It's a guitar. Amp that gets the sound of the guitar but is always articulate. It is the most dynamic Fender Amp and never gets a shitty distortion, always articulate, and works great with boost and sounds great with a Les Paul. SG, Strat and Tele

    To get overdrive without blowing out your eardrums, turn all tone controls to 1 and volume to 8. Then slowly turn the mid or the bass tone up. Having the fat switch on helps. Put a tube screamer in front for plexi rage.

  • @scottdobry3859
    @scottdobry3859 Год назад

    One of the amazing tricks on the VK is to roll the bass/mid/treble controls all the way down and crank the volume. Then start to bring the the tone controls back up as sort of "master volume" to get that cranked Marshall sound at the right volume. 😎

    Great amp! Have had mine since 1996 and it kills almost any other boutique amps I own (Morgan, Pure Sixty-four, Sommatone). You can get great juicy cleans at lower volumes. I rarely turn up over 3.....another thing I did was have an amp tech install a negative feed back loop for more head room for tonal variation, as it breaks up early (negative feedback loop gives the VK a more Fender Twin like response). One of Fender’s best amps aside from a BF Deluxe Reverb, which is my other go-to amp.

  • @tonelok
    @tonelok 6 лет назад +1

    I have one of these from the 90s and like most owners of these amps have a bit of a love/hate relationship. It's almost too piercingly loud and heavy to take out anywhere - baffles and/or facing it backwards is a must in a small venue. Pete Townshend and others who use them rarely put the volume much above three or four and often use an extension cab to fatten up the sound and offset the high frequency spike that is causing the Captain to wince. These are also notorious for a ticking sound in the tremolo that I think I even faintly heard in this demo - regardless of the tube driving it on the amp, a trem pedal works and sounds better. My Marshall JVM410 into the AHW 4x12 cab with a good reverb pedal nails most of the same tones and is much more versatile and has way more listenable distortion and smooth bottom end. But the tube reverb on the Vibro is solid and it does do some cool surf stuff. With a JHS @ in front and a good delay in the loop it sounds pretty damn good. Plus it looks great in the guitar room and has cool details like the oxblood cloth and hand forged Fender logo, so for now it stays...

    From the manual:
    "A. INPUT 1 - Plug your guitar in here.
    B. INPUT 2 - A lower impedance and sensitivity input than input 1, useful for guitars with active pickups. NOTE: Input 2 may also be used for chaining multiple amps together. With your guitar plugged into input 1, insert a cord in the number 2 input and connect the other end of the cord to another amplifier. The number 2 input now acts as a Y jack sending the guitar’s input signal to another amplifier."
    I can play mine on 4 and it's not too loud.

    I want one soo much. I wonder if they’ll have them in Australia. Under $5000 will be the thing?? Love my Fender tube amps and a secret orange special 2009 edition in white. Number 3 of 246. Joe Bonamassa I’m sure I’ve seen few of these in his collection.

    Well, if you wanted to get your Freddie King on this'd be a good choice! :)
