- Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk sits down with CNBC’s David Faber for an exclusive interview from Austin, Texas, during Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting. Musk speaks on his controversial work from home policies and why he thinks it is a 'moral issue'.
Some jobs allow you to work from home and some don't. There is no moral issue there.
Allows to work is different to where you have to work to be paid. The core point, is these laptop class, media which worked from home pushed lockdowns destroying millions of livelihood.
Not anymore than being a privileged billionaire is an issue.
Exactly…i think Elon is a control freak and he likes to have 100% control and doing micromanagement. That’s why he hates it. But people who can work from home and thanks to many new applications it’s super easy. I am super productive when I work from home because I don’t need to drive to work 30/40 min and go through rush hour what stresses me a lot. Train and bus is even worse because they are full and I need 1,5 hours to go from door to door. So 3 hours are lost. I need to prepare food for work at the evening so additionally 30-60 min are lost. And I have more gas cost for my car and many other things. When I work from home I can start working earlier and end working earlier. Or I can sleep longer. I am instantly at Home when I close my laptop so I have no time on the streets to waste. I am instantly with my family and can spent time with them. Elon musk is a workaholic. His life is based on work. He lives to work. He doesn’t work to live. He is a working machine and he does great things. But he is a bad employer and boss in my opinion. You can’t compare these other jobs with office jobs. And he is so much for saving the environment. But if more people work from home, less cars would waste the air. Less office building would be needed. Home office was not possible for such a long time because we had not the possibility. And it’s proven that productivity increased in Corona times when everybody worked from home and it decreased after it. He’s comparing office workers with people in the factory. But I know some benefits from people in the factory, which I don’t have as someone in the office. Most people I know who work in factories have fixed working times. For example, they start at 6 AM and finish work at 2:30 PM. Then the next shift takes over. They don’t need to worry about if the work is done or not when they leave the next shift will take over and they will continue your work where you finished on that day. Me, for my part can not do that every time I do way more overtime than people in the factories. If we go with Elon’s logic, that would mean that it should be forbidden to make overtime in the office. Most people from the factory I know are shocked when I tell them how many overtime I have. It doesn’t mean that I do two hours plus every day, but in summary, I do way more than most factory workers. It’s not fair to comparing them, factory worker can leave way earlier and have less overtimes so, in my opinion, it’s just fair to work from home if you can, and save a lot of time.

Also, not sure if you've noticed, but unemployment is extremely low and the market bounced back really quickly. I know some businesses didn't make it but owning your own business is a risk.

When covid was still in its early days I read an article where they discussed how CEO's felt about work from home. Many of them noted they feel a lack of control and I think that's the problem. It's a control issue, not a moral issue.
Control issue sounds negatively framed. Your manager is supposed to manage you. When your manager can't manage you productively and you can't seem to grasp that, you're an idiot.
No its not a control issue, the productivity speaks for itself. If you cant be productive you get fired. If you are more productive from home than others working in office you most likely get promoted for being a dedicated worker and put to better use and having to come to work as a result to do your on-sight new tasks.

As a programmer I spent years commuting to office every day, only to interact exclusively with people on other continents. Home working just saves me hours per day and doesn't affect my work at all. It's not because some people have a harder life that I have to shoot myself in the foot so that I suffer too, it's a really dumb way to look at "morality". Now if my productivity was impacted, then yes I would get the point.

Being able to actually spend time with your family and raising your kids instead of hours in traffic every day is as moral as it gets.
You really miss the point by only talking from your own perspective. What elon is saying is that, from the CEO perspective, it's wrong to grant the privilege of WFH to one group of people, while most laborers would actually need to be physically present at their work site. He probably doesn't want any cracks of divisiveness in his company workforce.

It's like saying that it's a moral issue that programmers get to sit down all day while other jobs require manual labor. Jobs have different requirements, and if your job can be done to the same degree from home, you should be allowed to work from home
The morale issue (if you already work on-site) is that if you push to work from home instead then there will be less demand for support staff on-site(cleaners, cooks, security etc..), people will lose jobs as a result.
I don't really understand this argument EM is making though, I don't care if your job requires you to leave the house, if I don't have to then it would be illogical af to do so purely out of solidarity.

The amount of time, auto expenses, an traffic related stress we face on the way to/from work, really makes a big difference in morale/productivity.

Not having to get dressed and spend time driving to/from work makes a huge difference in my work life balance. Gives me back 2hrs a day min. Makes up for allot of the on call rotation time.
I'm a worker who cannot do my job from home and I have to go to work everyday day. I have zero issue with someone working from home. There's no moral issue there. People have different jobs. Some require a lot of physical strenght and a hard manual labour, others are just about intellectual activity. It's ridiculous to think that we all have to do our jobs the same exact way. This man is a complete fool. As long as you get your job done, who cares whether it's from your house or from the factory? It's irrelevant.
For Musk, it's not about productivity or getting the job done. Increased remote work threatens his business. He's the CEO of a car company. That's why he's so in favor of getting people back in the office, and more specifically, back on the roads for commutes every day. But, that's the quiet part that he can't say out loud, so he's trying to make it about some moral nonsense argument that he cooked up.

Each employer needs to decide the model that makes the best sense for them depending on the type of work and the ability to attract employees. I've had an in office IT job for over 20 years and it was very common to be called to work nights, weekends. holidays and even on vacation in addition to being in the office during normal hours. The company had no problems letting me be a laptop class worker for them on my time in addition to being in the office 5 days a week. Now I'm working full time remotely which is a benefit for me as an employee. I respect Elon in many ways, but this one size fits all opinion doesn't make sense to me.

Saying WFH is unfair is like saying salary differences are unfair. It's a larger moral issue emitting greenhouse gases just to work in a different location; not to mention wasting a portion of people's lives commuting.
Consider the millions of people living in small towns, or are disabled and now have productive full time jobs because they are able to work from home.
I’ve been a critic many times of Musk on his practices of over promising and under delivering with Tesla, but I’m 100% with him on this. Living in Silicon Valley I see the tech mob with their entitled attitude about staying at home for work, where workers in most other industries aren’t afforded that luxury. Folks here became very spoiled during the pandemic, but when it comes to fairness, productivity and collaboration with co-workers, working from the office or wherever your employer needs you to be should be the norm again.

I agree with you. I live in Chicago, the good jobs are 45mins -1hour drive time up to 2 hours by public transit. I recently got a job I can walk to, it takes 5mins I barely even drive my car anymore.

The CEOs of cars, Downtown business development planners, and Commercial Real Estate owners are the ones pushing for us to get back in the office. Gee, I wonder why. To hell with commuting 5 days a week, I did it for close to 20 years, I'm never doing it again.
Commuting more to work wont drive up sales😂. Most people either can afford to buy a car or not. Tech companies have made it clear that its decreasing work efficiency on average, and that bringing people back into the work environment is a necessity. What field do you work in, and what type of job/role if you dont mind me asking.

@@Reza-hz1ce Looking for sources, I've found a few from 2021 which claim lower productivity, but in general, 2022 says it increases productivity. Regardless, why else would top tech be pulling people back to offices? They must have seen a negative impact in some way, otherwise, it would be stupid.

I'm someone who has worked in kitchens my whole life, and I have no qualms with people working from home if they can. I have to go to a job because that's where my stock is, my equipment is, and where my customers are... but that's my line of work. It's no skin off my nose if some computer programmer gets to work from home. I'm not sitting in my kitchen grinding my teeth 'cause some people work from home. What even kind of argument is that?

Its completely correct. It is unfair, because a heart surgeon cannot do that remotely. Elon is trying to get the orchestra to play together the only way you can do that is if everyone plays together in the same room at the same time. Intonation is key. When your job is to literally be on your laptop all day...yes, it makes sense to work from home. It's not a moral issue. The office needs to justify its existence. Micromanagement or the company "culture" aren't valid enough reasons. Workers are smarter than people give them credit for. If their job responsibilities rely on them being on-site, they'll do so without much pushback.
Not to mention, there are smaller companies who now have a larger pool of job candidates thanks to remote work. We don't say enough about the benefits of WFH. There are many winners from this shift, as well.

Agreed. I do whatever is expected of me in the timeline outlined for me. If there is no timeline, I proceed leisurely. If there is a timeline, it is always done on time. So much time in professional jobs is waiting and down time, does it make sense to negatively affect morale of workers by killing them by boredom, or does it make more sense to have them utilise the down time for whatever they see fit at home?
Moreover, I live 1.5 hours driving from my office, on a good day, that's 3 hours lost in commuting. If I moved to the city my rent would increase ALOT, my commute would be roughly 30m - 1hr (depending on where in the city I live), and I would not live near friends and family, and I would have to leave my community, all of which massively positively impact my mental health and thus productivity and willingness to do my job. If they made me move to the city I would find another job, even at a pay cut, to stay in my community, because people matter more to me than money, and cities make me depressed.
The car business needs commuters. Millions of commuters wasting time and burning fuel so the car industry and the office landlords can make a profit. If your job allows you to WFH it would be morally irresponsible not to.
I work face to face with more people from home than I ever could from the office. I often travel to CA to the mothership and then sit for half or more of the day in my hotel or a conference room on video calls. Feels like I'm getting punked.

It doesn’t get more ironic than this. As someone who started out working in fast food, paid her way through college, worked decades of horrible corporate and 9-5 jobs, and is now part of the “elite laptop class”, he’s the last person that gets to weigh in on my “morality” for working from home. I still work over 40 hours a week most weeks. He’s the reason people still go to factories to work, not us. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. And if anyone is living in Lala land, it’s him.

While I understand some of your point of view, I too have worked incredibly hard my whole life, some of your thinking is off. Elon spends more time at his factory than he does at home, and works more hours than most people, I know, he is very much a grass roots kind of guy, to say he is living in la la land is absurd. Things don't just make themself. Pretty much everything you get to enjoy someone somewhere had to put it together.

I am a software engineer but worked for years in construction from plumbing to landscaping. And now as an engineer, I see my spoiled coworkers complaining and whining about the most ridiculous miniscule things. They have never worked a hard day in their life and I'm guessing you haven't either. So, yeah, you have no perspective on what it is like to work hard to keep civilization running, but I'm pretty sure you think you do and I'm pretty sure you have some kinda moral explanation for why you deserve your ivory tower. I am constantly amazed about the things we complain about in tech, and don't even realize we are the modern equivalent of the Kings and Lords of ancient times.

I'm also a believer that working in person can be more productive. But the thing is for those industry that can support work from home, as long as the job gets done right and properly, that shouldn't be an issue. If you work from home you don't get to experience the real world. If you don't experience the real world, the work you do can't possibly produce benevolent results. You can be productive, but your decisions and actions that follow will be evil as they are out of touch with reality.

The issue is that laptop class, which doesnt really matter if they work in office or at home, are just not that productive in general. Most of the time is spent in meetings or sending emails. Yet they get paid absurdly compared to service workers. Thats the moral issue.

The moral wrong is the 21st century disparity between CEO and worker compensation. Its historically never been this astronomically wide.
If the company does not maintain a profit margin the company will fail and then no one will have a job there.
Jobs don’t exist to employ people. Jobs exist to accomplish something the company needs. When there’s a recession companies often need to accomplish less and save more.

I like Elon Musk. He’s wrong on this issue. The place where you happen to sit with your computer does not matter. Saving gas money, lunch money, work clothes, and commute time DOES matter! Corporate America definitely equates some level of misery with “work” and that is the problem. People are tired of being miserable when it is completely unnecessary. Work culture is always toxic, but my home is peaceful. Where do you think I will produce more? Plus I start at 630am….because I’m an early bird. Plus everyone chooses how productive they are no matter where they sit.

Work from home is justified from a moral standpoint. We shouldn't bring people down to a worse living situation just because someone else has it bad. We don't take houses away from everyone who could have one just because there are some people who don't have one. We don't ban people from eating dairy just because there are some people who can't have it and they would feel bad seeing others enjoy something they can't have. Why place an outdated and unneeded burden on people just on the off chance that it hurts their coworker's feelings? There certainly are folks who cannot work from home due to the nature of their work, and hats off to them, but they should be paid/compensated more, rather than artificially making things worse for others.

You gotta understand though that most people do not work from home though. From recent stats 12% are fully remote and 20-25% are hybrid. Even high paying jobs like healthcare, lawyers, and scientist etc are working full time on site. We spend so much time trying to make this small percentage of the work force happy when most people do not benefit from it.
Moreover, if this is truly an issue of morality to you. Your solution should be attempting to figure out ways to allow your workers who have to come in to experience the benefits of working from home.

Biggest thing I disagree with Musk on. The accumulated stress and fatigue from commute traffic jams ruins productivity and morale as well as all the meaningless distractions around your office desk or worse, open space. Like people coming to interrupt you for no reason other than they didn't feel like working right then. And so on. Not missing it one bit. As a sysadmin I've way too often felt like my actual productivity started when everybody else was starting to leave the building. And needless to say was getting way more done on the actual work from home days. (Thanks covid for that realization)

Working from home is isolating. Productivity increases but as well the tendency to overwork. I started to work from home 8 months ago. There are advantages to it but I feel alone and detached from what I am doing. I believe it is important to learn from colleagues, sometimes just by observing your colleagues around you. Not to talk about the fact that in many cases the energy and other home workplace expenses are on me. I do understand that for certain professions, it makes sense to work from home but I would like to be able to ask some simple questions to my colleagues without making appointments or calling them.
I work in the technology industry and I'm one of the few who prefers to spend at least a few days a week in the office. I don't want to be holed up in my apartment, when you work from home the line between work and pleasure begins to blur. I like to keep these things separate, when I'm at home, I'm relaxing.

Technology during the Pandemic has proven that in 2023 we can do work and meetings online just fine. You can work 40 hours at work, but stress and exhaustion while commuting are eating away your and your family’s lives. I work from home and LOVE it! More work gets done, no commute stress, less stress/drama with constant office politics and forced connections in the office and I'm available for my family. Elon has a load of kids and in every interview never fails to mention he works 7 days a week. Billionaires don't impress me and I'm not taking advice from someone who has their priorities all wrong. This is my life and I'll do what's best for me and my family. I have never been more productive, happier, or been able to save this much time on commuting in years. Not only this, but raising children becomes an option again now I'm available more often where this previously wasn't an option. I like working from home. I can work as late as I want. (and I do) but if I'm at the office, I am very reluctant to stay and work late. Especially with so much distractions at work, people keep walking in front of your desk, or coming by to bother you about nothing when you're knee deep in something. I think Elon was trying to make the issue too black and white---this or that kinda thing. It's a very limited perspective/viewpoint, as they say spiritually. There is no one right solution. Wfh works for me. Some jobs work well with it, some don't.

Spending 6-8 hours every week on commuting isn't exactly a productive way to advance your career.

The reason why social connection is forced upon employees is because there are very few good employees and it is obvious that less productive employees will reach out to the smarter employees for help. Plus, the vast majority of office jobs benefit from direct communication, teamwork and being able to read the situation better. If this weren’t the case, tech companies including Elon wouldn’t be pushing on reversing WFH.
And then there is also the moral issue to some extent of you being able to work from home but your co-workers being forced to come everyday, as well as 90% of the workforce. But that’s debatable. If it works better for you, then you’re likely part of the exception.

Exactly…i think Elon is a control freak and he likes to have 100% control and doing micromanagement. That’s why he hates it. But people who can work from home and thanks to many new applications it’s super easy. I am super productive when I work from home because I don’t need to drive to work 30/40 min and go through rush hour what stresses me a lot. Train and bus is even worse because they are full and I need 1,5 hours to go from door to door. So 3 hours are lost. I need to prepare food for work at the evening so additionally 30-60 min are lost. And I have more gas cost for my car and many other things. When I work from home I can start working earlier and end working earlier. Or I can sleep longer. I am instantly at Home when I close my laptop so I have no time on the streets to waste. I am instantly with my family and can spent time with them. Elon musk is a workaholic. His life is based on work. He lives to work. He doesn’t work to live. He is a working machine and he does great things. But he is a bad employer and boss in my opinion. You can’t compare these other jobs with office jobs. And he is so much for saving the environment. But if more people work from home, less cars would waste the air (and less cars would be sold ;) ). Less office building would be needed. Home office was not possible for auch a long time because we had not the possibility due to slow technology. And it’s proven that productivity increased in Corona times when everybody worked from home and it decreased after it. He’s comparing office workers with people in the factory. But I know some benefits from people in the factory, which I don’t have as someone in the office. Most people I know who work in factories have fixed working times. For example, they start at 6 AM and finish work at 2:30 PM. Then the next shift takes over. They don’t need to worry about if the work is done or not when they leave the next shift will take over and they will continue your work where you finished on that day. Me, for my part can not do that every time I do way more overtime than people in the factories. If we go with Elon’s logic, that would mean that it should be forbidden to make overtime in the office. Most people from the factory I know are shocked when I tell them how many overtime I have. It doesn’t mean that I do two hours plus every day, but in summary, I do way more than most factory workers. It’s not fair to comparing them factory worker can leave way earlier and have less overtimes so, in my opinion, it’s just fair to work from home if you can, and save a lot of time.
While i definitely resonate with what your saying, lets not forget that he is in the realm of engineering, so most of what he is saying is based on that. I personally know many who like WFH flexibility like once max twice a week, but still coming into the office. The matter is that Tesla SpaceX Twitter as well as many other giants have noticed a general decrease in productivity, which they have combated by eliminating pure WFH to either none or a hybrid. Now add on the ethical argument of you being able to work from home but your coworkers and the vast majority of the workforce not, but that’s just one of the many ethical inequalities, but it could create a bad environment and team sprit/respect internally. I remember my father during lockdown having this dilemma on his hands. He had the option but his coworkers didn’t, and that was during a heath scare as well. Regardless, i think as he said, there are exceptions to this rule, and his argument doesn’t sound that unreasonable.

As ia said, the productivity was INCREASING while corona and definitely not decreasing. there are many studies. And that makes sense because I realized it at myself. Because I get so much more fexlibilty and time for other thing like hobbies and because I dont need go through the traffic in the morning and after work made me WAY more fit, more alert and full of energy. I was just much more balanced. This was true for at least 80% of the colleagues I know. They act as if you're lying on your back at home. what counts is the result. And as long as I get mine done, it doesn't matter where I do it. Someone who lies in bed in the home office and doesn't do anything immediately stands out. Fact. You can set fixed days to meet in the office, but whoever thinks that banning or not offering home office would be smart will lose in the long run. Currently there is a shortage of workers and it is important as an employer to offer attractive benefits. And home office is one of the top 3 things that employees expect.

If you work for an office or any indoor job that allows you computer access then working from home is totally fine, but you cant compare construction workers to office jobs there is no similarity. Here in Texas my good sir where I live a lot of jobs don't pay to meet the rising prices in gas, or food , or daycare etc. So working from home benefits people like this.
been working from home since 2008. I live in NJ and my team's office is in Florida, and when they bought out my old company, they saw no reason to lease office space for the 10 of us in NJ that came with that deal. Thankfully this company has always been comfortable with WFH, and my boss down in Florida is himself not planning to return to the office for more than 1 day a week down in Florida where he lives, because he's moving 90 minutes away. He has seen that productivity hasn't been affected negatively by the fact that 75% of his group lives/works 1000+ miles away from the office.

I have a non certified organic/regenerative market farm, of 15 Acres, 1/2 acre is gardened utilizing permanent no till beds and a 30 x100' high tunnel that helps here in WI, zone 5. I mostly grow annual veg for two local farmer markets and sales off farm. I also produce shiitake on approximately 2500 oak logs I cultivate in the woods. I am expanding the perennial soft fruits (berries) I grow for market. Growing blueberries, gooseberries, goji berries, red and black currents, raspberries, strawberries, elderberries, honeyberries, bush cherries currently. Also have some nut and fruit trees that should start producing this year, they are a young orchard. Have some chickens, geese and turkeys wandering around to keep things interesting, also a cow and some goats to do the mowing of grassy areas. Have-not started my lawn mower for years.
Its not a high paying career, but much more rewarding than the 30 years I spent as a chemist for Pharma companies.

I worked from home for much of my career in IT. I was much more productive working from home where I didn't have the lazy co-workers dropping in to just chat and try to distract me from work. Some managers were skeptical at first, but they quickly learned who they could trust to work from home and who they couldn't. If someone can be just as productive working from home, there's no reason to not let them. It's not a moral issue, it's whether or not someone has a good work ethic. I worked with people from all over the world, many of them worked from home, too. Some shouldn't have, because they were not productive that way, but most of us were good working from home. Work from home is great for moms juggling everything. I hated sitting at a desk for 8 hours when I could do my day’s work in 3.

It depends on what you do. Manufacturing quite frankly sucks for work from home, so does food service. I travel nationally and sometimes internationally often to visit clients (who happen to be mostly manufacturing plants) and I have to be in the field. When I’m not in the field ,or going to meetings the majority of time I work from home. Our company has gone to a more office hoteling model, and it has saved money. I was skeptical, especially with Junior staff, and thought I would force them back to the office but I find screen share on say Teams to be just as useful as standing over my shoulder at the office. Also, I even find team members doing work on days they may have called out sick. For our work, it generally works and we even at times gain productivity. But it’s not an end all solution. It does reduce traffic, congestion, and even reduces things like waste water from laundering clothes as often or even dry cleaning solvents.
The problem is that your not seeing the numbers. 12% of people work full time remote and 20-25 hybrid. Everyone else works full time onsite. Yet we are spending so much time making sure this market of the job market is happy.
@@Mike-dd8bd I agree Mike. There will always be work from home jobs Vs jobs that have to be done onsite, in a facility (plant, hospital, etc.). That later category is the majority.
Somebody has to do the jobs to keep modern civilization continuing.

Not everyone can afford a $20k robot that will be obsolete every 5 years and people can't survive off of unemployment. @@ZC965Tt Never, I give you an example. Cashier was probably a job that was supposed to get replaced by AI 4 to 5 years back. When you go in supermarkets now, yes there are self check ins but also equal amounts of cashiers. Humans are always needed, they cant get fully replaced.
How is it morally wrong? I thought this guy was a free market guy. No one is forcing someone to take an in-person job or a remote job. If everyone wants to work from home, then to get people to take in-person jobs you will have to pay them more. Its supply/demand.

What Elon is saying here is idiotic, but he makes that much money because he owns shares in the company that he created. His salary (aka his share of the revenue) is not astronomically higher than his employees. Tesla would have to be worth nothing in the stock market for the money he "makes" to be comparable to his employees - at which point they'd all make nothing because the company would be bankrupt.
That is not a moral issue. If you want more, ask or leave and go elsewhere. Or create your own business and pay everyone the same as your own profits. Your moral compass will re-center quick.

A lot of companies decided to keep workers at home to save on the office rental and upkeep expenses so whatever works for one’s business to keep them afloat.
His “how is it fair that those other workers can’t work from home” is an updated version of Jay Gould’s “I can can get one half of the working class to fight the other half.”
Elon Musk has been right about a number of things. Work from home is not one of them.
