"Everyone that don't agree with me are wrong" is a very toxic way of thinking, and makes it apparent that one is not willing to discuss a subject. I agree with the video in that the people beneath the directors should get more credits than what they do, but the problem I have with your video is that you make it seem like Kojima hogged all of the credits for himself, when it is just a sad reality of the game industry. Kojima is not to blame for the credits he has been given by game journalists but the journalists themselves, and in some regard the fanbase which find it more easy to focus all of the credits to one "genious". I love the games to death but I don't hold Kojima above any criticism. On the contrary, I think the games have very blatant flaws sometimes which break up the experience like the silly writing for example. What I don't support is trying to push down a director in the mud because someone connected to the project did amazing work in an industry which was almost impossible to strive for greatness within during the time that the amazing translator did, it just becomes a very apparent shit-throwing that reeks with distain for the creator. Although I think it is amazing that you did lift this man's work, which should be celebrated in unison with Kojimas work in addition to all the other minds and creators behind the beloved Metal Gear games.

Personally i dont care who gets the credit, but if you are going to make an argument, you should look forward to debating opinions, not try to stop them and belittle them before they can even be written.

Not sure why this video has nearly half dislikes, but you're entirely right. At least for English speaking audiences. Translation teams don't get nearly enough credit for what they do and what they contribute to gaming history. Adapting a script in any medium is an art, and gives you a chance to connect with your audience better. I've never been a translator, but I have been a script editor for theatre, and while the main writer will provide most of what you see, it's up to that second (or more) set of eyes to make sure everything makes sense and is presented in the best way it can be. Whether it's fixing dialogue errors, making things sound more natural, or even fixing plot holes through small bits of dialogue that weren't originally there. In the case of a translator, they're tasked with fully writing a script in their language and making it make sense for audiences without changing too much in the process (at least nowadays they are). It's not just a job, but an art. Not everything in Japanese translates well to English, so making things flow naturally to an English speaker is a daunting task. Some of my all-time favorite translations have actually come in terms of the Dragon Quest games. They're excellent at punny dialogue for items, monsters, and whatnot.
When other people sleep on thanking the translators, I will always cheer them on. They're pretty much always overlooked in the west.

Weeblations are notorious for characters using speech that is entirely alien to any English speaker. Look as Persona 5 which is a game that suffers due to a poor quality weeblation. Another example would be the translation of the Metro 2033 novel which is full of "direct" translation that makes it laborious to read.
A translator should try to preserve the authors intent while making the end product seem like it was authored in their language. There are things that cannot be directly translated (idioms are the most obvious) and must be substituted with something different.

Like the example on the end of the video. I mean... come again? What was the meaning in that? I can understand Japanese could produce something bizarre like that, but seeing it English is just mind blowing.
There are cases where You have to sacrifice the original sentence or parts of it on the altar of logic and "making the sentence understandable" by the target audience. Even more if the cultural gap is so wide like between Europeans and Asian cultures. I found out that the hardest work is with jokes. You're missing the point, they aren't trying to construe anything you claim. They focused on one element because that is the element linked to the translator and his story. That's the jumping off point for the discussion. This video was never about the game experience as a whole and how all the others parts worked together.

He created some video games. Talented? Absolutely. Genius? Definitely not. It's just a title, you're focusing on the wrong thing as you can't sum up a video accurately within a single line title. Did you even listen to what they said and understand it? It doesn't seem like it. When talking about the translated versions. Kojima didn't do the translations, so it's fair to give credit to the translator. If you wrote a script for a top movie, would you want all the credit to go to the director? That's what you are saying.
The director's artistic vision (Kojima) is irrelevant here as that was already done and in place. The translations would be after all that. The focus of the video was on the translator and his work, not on the product as a whole. I explained this to you. So what if he made some mistakes? I suppose you've never made any, correct? All languages suffer through translation and Japanese is one of the harder ones to translate. Go and try it yourself and see how far you get. Nuance and tone can be almost impossible sometimes.
There is no bias, contempt or envy. You are the one bringing that in and it's clearer than water that you came in looking to hate because oh no, how dare they knock your preciouuusss Kojima. I’m conflicted about this, because it really is art, not science. Normally I’d say: ‘stick to the original vision,’ but when you’ve got to make dialogue match the cutscenes, you’re going to have to make changes, and obviously, it’s better to include genuine military terms.
Thing for me is: Kojima’s aTERRIBLE writer, who should really let someone else translate his gibberish into something coherent, and a bit less repetitive.

I read the article. It's not like a hit piece or anything, just explaining the translator's approach to... translating MGS. That's all it is.
Moving on. Since when did you guys become clickbaiting trash? Good on you. This'll get some views. More so than "Behind the scenes of MGS: Translation work. This video, ironically, is ignoring the linguistic nuances that the source article talks about. "Lines directly translated from Japanese sound stupid in English so he's a hack writer"? What kind of logic is that? That's literally the opposite of the essence of the translator's article.
The point of the Article is that Kojima, like the egotistical man he is(regardless of his real abilities), was an ass about "his work" being attributed to/tampered with by someone else because he didn't quite understand how strange direct translation of Japanese words would sound like in English. Hell, the better clickbait title would've been "Kojima's an uncompromising egotistical asshole that hoards all the glory himself".
    Edit - clarity.

Both 005 and Castle Wolfenstein had been out YEARS before the first Metal Gear came was released. AT BEST you can say that the early Metal Gear games helped to innovate the genre, and make it more comprehensible, but it most certainly did not INVENT the genre (or even invent the "modern" stealth genre).

Kojima is revered by other creatives because of his career output, not one game. The contribution of others and Kojima's were all valuable in MGS. Like a great actor who has worked in many movies, Kojima carried on after MGS and his work and quality gave him his well-earned respect. Always take more than _a single person_ to complete large creative projects like this and its far more nuanced than one "genius should get credit for this thing". Many elitists say they did _some thing_ all on their own, but the reality is that it takes teams of people accomplish most large tasks.

Most video games are a team effort. And for the most part that's what artists do , they put their own spin on a concept according to the desired atmosphere.
And apparently Kojima understands that now according to the interview with norman reedus saying he understood why everyone loved him and that instead of saying "no this doesn't fit the game" he would often try and fit it in an interesting way.

  • @vorea
    @vorea 5 лет назад +4

There are two kinds of translating.
There's translation, which is more literal in a way where you're just trying to get one point across... and there's localizing.
When you localize a game, you take the concepts and meanings of each sentence and reconstruct them so they work with other cultures.
A good example is translating puns, jokes, or idiolms. They won't work if translated word by word, someone has to understand what it means and figure out an analogy in the different culture.
In dutch in an echo chaimber you can shout "wat rijmt met pegel?" and the echo will sound out "eagle" -- if you were to translate that it would be "What ryhmes with cone? eagle"-- but localizing it you would probably change eagle into one.

As someone who plays airsoft. There is an interesting coincidence between Gun fanatics and how the inner workings of any airsoft gun is called the “gearbox”. When you purchase an airsoft gun, the most sought after is a “metal gearbox” , not a plastic one. The MGS series takes a liking to gun fans much like John wick.. of course MGS is a fan to more than just guns but perhaps the name Metal Gear is referring the heart of airsoft guns (since real shooting ranges are banned in Japan) all they have is airsoft. And Japan is big on a wide selection of BB guns, all of which the heart of any gun is through modifying the Metal Gearbox....

An example of how important translating the intent behind the words instead of the literal words is Squall from FF 7. From what I've heard (I only speak one language), the original text had him more indecisive and non committal, while the English translation had him very much that teenage angst with his 'Whatever.' responses combined with the crossing of his arms and the turning of his head.

didnt care for the title or the slightly bitchy comment you pinned but i have to say i thought this would be self evident. Kojima has staff working tirelessly just like every other company and if anyone was only crediting him that would be stupid. Kojima does not hog the credit and often thanks his staff on helping him with such a task but like anything be it bands, movies, comics etc there is a lead person everyone just credits. for instance with marvel we always thank Stan Lee but not many of the others get any mention, in bands we thank lead singers but rarely the whole band itself, in movies we thank the directors or actors but never the other crew members except maybe writers.
The reason Kojima gets so much love is because these master pieces came from his mind without him these wouldnt exist. just like George Lucas sure you can argue the others made star wars what it is but without George it would have never existed in the first place. people are not going to sit and list every person that worked on a project.

I think this was a great video! But agree with another comment saying it was a littlw bad title. That being said, I think a balance is the answer in the discussion. You want to change stuff a little but, but part of the experience is also experiencing the artists culture. As such I believe some things should be kept close to the original, while other stuff should not.

I made this as a reply to another comment but I thought I'd poste it here as it took a while to write and I wanted others to see it:
While Harry Gregson Williams has made some fantastic music for Metal Gear like Snake Eater's theme or Old Snake, other composers like Tappi "TAPPY" Iwase (composed the main theme of the series from 1998-2006), Kazuki Muraoka, Rika Muranaka (composed MGS and MGS2 vocal themes and a healing radio song in MGS3), Norihiko Hibino (composed almost every piece of in-game music and cutscene music in MGS2, MGS3, and MGS: PO), Nobuko Toda (MGS3, MGS: PO, MGS4), etc. are just some examples. Not to mention that Hideo Kojima had a writting partner in that of Tomokazu Fukushima in Metal Gear from Metal Gear Solid to Snake Eater and he also wrote multiple other stories himself like the Ac!d duology or Ghost Babel. Of course he was credited, but it seems that he's always been sidelined despite writing or co-writting what are widely considered the greatest Metal Gear plots and dialogue.
P.S. - I know about the interviews that basically minimize Tomokazu Fukukushima's influence on MGS and MGS2's plots and major wrotting decisions, as him not being as integrel to the plot does not mean his contributions were not important and that Kojima should be given all the credit, just like how despite anything he did, Bob Kane should be given credit as well as Bill Finger for Batman's creation, but they should be properly credited, none of this "Bob Kane WITH Bill Finger" it should be "Bob Kane And Bill Finger" like basically every other comic book credit. Basically if someone works on something they should be given credit and not downplayed, jo matter what they have or will do.
This goes for Yuji Naka as well despite any nonsense he has or will get up to, he, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara created the character of Sonic the Hedgehog and his base gameplay and Yuji Uekawa is the one who modernized his character in the late 1990s to be basically the Sonic we havd today.

MGS 1 was always the best in my eyes because the acting direction was on point. The writing was top notch and most importantly, it remained grounded even in the most fantastical moments. It towed that line perfectly and kept the game from tipping over the edge. The more control Kojima had over multiple aspects of his projects without other creative talents to help reign him in, the more off the rails they became. MGSV and Death Stranding is ultimately what you get.
