You weren't the only one having trouble with this aircraft! Many years ago I was chatting to one of the engineers who worked on it. He said that initially its design didn't facilitate maintenance, and that there was kerfuffle and pushback from the 'hands-on' types until it got sorted. Think yourself lucky! Nice recovery! Cheers!
Fantastic job as always and excellent resilience and patience with recovering the kit. I tried using the Neo masking fluid once as I couldn't get Maskol at the time. Absolute disaster, ended up binning the kit as the mask either lifted the paint or wouldn't come off the kit at all. Have gone back to Maskel and as I've never had issue with that.
I've learned some really useful techniques from your videos. A home made decals vid would be excellent. Help people avoid a few of the pitfalls. I always hated the, "right of passage", mentality that some people hold. What's so wrong about helping people up front? Thanks for sharing your efforts with us!
Great recovery Greg, turned out a little gem in the end.I wish I had the skills (and the finance) to return to the hobby.I still remember the days of balsa wood plugs and dope/talcum filler for any major conversion work.As a kid I remember a conversion article in airfix magazine of a Sunderland to a Sandringham flying boat it was all magic to me.Your skills are to be applauded as always thanks for another entertaining video.
I remember that magazine article, sometime in 1969. Way beyond my capabilities. One month they did a 'needle nosed' Dakota. Always a good mixture of air, military and naval.
After your paint fail drama I was sort of pleased. It showed that you are human after all and even the best modellers have the same struggles/disasters as me. The difference is that you still end up with a great build in the end when mine end in the bin
The whole thing would have ended up in the bin if I had the same problem with the paint. Good on you for sticking with it. Some of us have more patience, you most certainly more than I.
Kudos again! An amazing video! Really enjoy these “One & Done” videos! Few things…1) YES! I’m in for a video on printing custom/missing/old decals! 2) Here in the States, “General Purpose 409” will COMPLETELY strip any acrylic enamel paint off. Airbrush cleaner…you bet! I don’t know what’s in the stuff, but it will take the fur off a bunny at 40 paces! 3) Fond memories working on the Bae-146 for Air California - American Airlines & then USAir mid/late 1980s. Once again great video! Enjoy Telford!
@@GregsModels Looking forward to see what you bring back from “Telford”! I wish we had shows here in the States, the IPMS conventions are few and far, and there is a “kit collectors” show twice a year, out on the left coast. Thanks Again Greg
For a minute there I thought, ‘’e’s gone mad!’ Looks great. For anyone, like me, who actually flew in one of these while it duty as an airliner, they were lovely. The trailing link undercarriage made for very smooth landings. Perhaps its only flaw was that it really should have been a twin, rather than having four engines.
I worked with these at Woodford back in the late nineties. They were solid built aircraft let down by bad fuel consumption. The RJX project was supposed to solve this👍
Hi Greg another great little build the final reveal doesn't show the painful chapter's this little plane traveled very nice colour plain but crisp and it works your patience and determined approach is endless thankyou cheers jon
What a neat, and different model. I also appreciate you including your mistakes in the video and how you overcame them. Makes the build that much more cooler.
It turned out into a good model, you managed to get all the old paint off really well . 👌 I have toyed with the idea of making transfers but it does look quite involved in getting them so they look spot on. I guess it's as much about good materials as it is about knowing what to do.
Please please please do a decal tutorial. Really looking forward to that. Also it would be nice to have some Trial&Error experience to potential problems, glitches, etc. etc. covered as well.
I was just using masking fluid today and thinking how much I hate working with the stuff. After watching your experience I’m definitely staying away from it from here on. Had it lift a 4 colour paint scheme (Vallejo acrylic so no chemical bond to the plastic and I should have known) on a WWI armoured car kit. And yes, a decal video would be great!
The flashbacks were real!......One thing I'd recommend if you're going to discuss paint removal is 'Clean Slate' from VMS. Of all the market products, it's the only one I've found to be consistent and reliable and I haven't had it burn through (or even slightly damage) any plastic.
Nice work as always Greg, especially given that you show the bits that go wrong! Very much appreciated by we mere mortals. Also yes please to a homemade decal guide 👍
I built this model (Avro RJ 85) in the Crossair version but without the wheels (flying version on the stand). This is a really nice and very detailed Revell model in this scale.
Oh Wow! That is a fantastic, fabulous result..!! 👍 Your custom fuselage inserts are invisible in the video; the re-scribing is excellent, the panel line washes working perfectly, and your decals are a treat!! After the heartache (ball ache!!) of seeing that first paint disaster, you recovered, and made an aircraft that is far more attractive in that light blue/grey finish - much less 'busy' and lets you see the actual lines and shape of the aircraft !! 😊 Brilliant work... 🙂

Hi Greg. You did a great job with the problems you experienced with the building. I am very glad that you shared these troubles with us. Even the best modelers can sometimes have problems during construction caused not only by the quality of the kit, but only a few who publish them in their videos. I will also share my modeling problems with the audience and I think that these anabasis of mine are quite popular with the audience😁✌
I can highly recommend the Bondic UV glue instead of the crystal clear for the windows. You can apply it the same way but overfill so you can sand it flush and you can get it flush with the fuselage and super clear and shiny.
As soon as I saw you putting that turquoise crap on I knew it was bad. Lol. My deal with that stuff was on a 2 inch piece. Did the same thing. Live and learn.
Great build as always! Paint peeling... It just happens. Few years ago, I started to work on a model I waited for quite some time. I decided not to take any risks and didn't experiment with chemicals or tools, just wanted to make the best display piece I can. When I started to polish first coat of paint (2000 grit under water) paint peeled off. And super smelly Alclad primer I used with it as well. And it happened in the area with busy details and complicated curvature. I still don't know how I was able to overcome that and get through the finish line.
I worked for BAe on the 146 and was at Cranfield when paradrop trials were carried out on the 146STA. Some fine gentlemen from The Parachute Regiment were there to throw themselves out as required. Even lying on the grass waiting (as the Army does) they were pretty terrifying.
That's an absolute beautiful end result. I'm not surprised by the jagged camo edges using the masking fluid. I don't think I've ever seen a clean result using that stuff. I would definitely love to see a video on the home made decals. I am going to check out the sky van video now.
A nice build in the end, but I have been there with paint compatibility issues. I now stick to Tamiya acrylics; I like the fact that they are water soluble, so brush and airbrush cleaning is easy. For camo on smaller models, I use blu tac. To get really sharp lines I cut the edges of the blu tac with a modelling knife being careful not to cut into the model. If you are still worried about bleed through make the first couple of coats a clear varnish to seal the masking.
Brilliant job. You're a braver man than I am. Things like this are a great encouragement to try things you might normally balk at. (In modelling, anyway).
G'day there Greg, when I left the RNZAF in 1995, I went to Ansett NZ and managed the maintenance programme and planning team with a fleet of 9 146-2&300s and one -100 QC. I admire your work and techniques and even more for using techniques that I find difficult, for example...as a fluid mask. The only way to wear the fluid mask was in watercolors on very thick paper. Another mess I already did with her was masking Canopys after applying the "Future", it was very ugly. I know it is not required to use a primer, but it avoids exactly this kind of problem, because the plastic is very slick and depending on the type of paint or mask, can remove the paint from the kit. I have P3 Orion in 1/144 this kit also is unglazed, do you know of any glazing kits? Might look into the possibility of making a RJX from this kit . Worked on all these variants in UK and abroad over the years . You got me thinking Greg . Great recovery . Decals video please. Software and Decal paper you use or recommend. Looking into making glazing from resins, making male and female moulds from Miliput and composite release tape . Plug lengths no details on how you came to these dimensions, however I will add that working on these aircraft the frames are around 32 to 35 inches from frame centres, then you can scale down to 1/144 this is true for most commercial civil aircraft in the cabin area , this changes in the cockpit plug and rear empennage where frame spacing starts to reduce.
I remember RJX being given the thumbs up at Woodford. But I ended up at Warton in or around 1999. In answer to your first question, sorry no. As far as the extensions, these were created from plan drawings showing the 100, 200 and 300. At 1/144 scale it's never going to be inch perfect 😎👍
