My view on the Dwemer is that they branched off from the Falmer. They were the miners and lived apart from the main Falmer settlements. Certain individuals had an ability to discover veins of ores through the tones created by the striking of picks against rock outcroppings. With that ability that was developed even more with special gear that they developed to follow the tones that different ores gave off. The Falmer settlements considered them their poor brothers as the Dwemer started to live in the rock galleries that they carved out. They became self sufficient and abandoned any dependence on the outside world. The arrogance of their Falmer brethren separated them even more. As animals couldn’t live in these subterranean environments, they developed the special machines that provided security and recovery of ores. Self sufficient as they were, worshipping the Divines became less and less and caused more animosity between these two cultures.

It's possible but I would argue that if they did branch off from the other elves in that way, it would have been alongside the Chimer. This makes sense as they are most prevalent within Morrowind, had their own great house in Chimer society for a while, and both the Chimer and Dwemer beliefs oppose the other elves. They likely settled across the north when they arrived in the velothi pilgrimage. If they branched off from the Falmer they would likely be primarily present in Skyrim and less in other provinces. Also the snow elves pantheon is extremely similar to that of the Altmeri Pantheon which therefore would also oppose Dwemeri beliefs. I think it is certainly possible, but in saying that I also think there are other possibilities that are more likely to have occurred.

@@Verdant1 Thank you for the response. The big concept that I would like to emphasize is that different ores may give off different sonic resonances. The Dwemer miners that had this ability would have been the basis of the ones that developed the tonal technologies. Miners being more mechanically inclined would turn to developing equipment that would lessen their burdens in mining the ores.

@@Verdant1 It’s my own speculation, but I try to follow what I believe is a logic trail. Engineers tend to be non religious except to their calculations and equations.
Offhand, did you notice that Bethesda’s art department has a thing about Art Deco? The Dwemer architecture and the mechanical designs all have an Art Deco feel to them? It’s in the Fallout series as well.
