    • @Omega4Productions
      @Omega4Productions 3 месяца назад +17

      See that’s what these writers don’t understand when handling something with established lore like Halo. By changing how something occurs in their version, they fail to account for how it breaks the writing everywhere else.
      By introducing a human in the Covenant, they’ve completely broken the Covenant’s motivation for war against humans. By making only a few humans be Reclaimers, they’ve FURTHER shattered the Covenant’s motivation for war.

    • @Meravokas
      @Meravokas 3 месяца назад +6

      In expanded post Bungie lore it's basically stated that humanity is the race of the reclaimers, not all humans are reclaimers or have particular gene songs. Therefore by recognition tech that the Covenant so poorly understand the function of, humanity registers as "Forerunner" via the Luminaries.

    • @Meravokas
      @Meravokas 3 месяца назад +5

      @@LezlyLikesYuri It doesn't have anything specifically to do with corporate greed. In the last few episode breakdown videos, 00 put it succinctly. To retell the events line by line, it'd be cool and fun, but we'd know exactly what's coming. No tension, no wondering or theorizing. Simply put. It'd actually be cheaper to make an animated (traditional or CG) visual adaptation than a TV series that follows it all beat by beat. Paramount AND Microsoft are sticking their necks waaaaaay out on the series. Took major steps back from how things tracked in season 1 and improved characterization and overall writing quality to a great degree.
      Not everything is about milking something for all it's worth. If anything, Paramount is (Likely) getting more money out of it than Microsoft is. Much like how novelists make more of the money from writing the books than Microsoft does in it's profit cuts.

    • @Omega4Productions
      @Omega4Productions 3 месяца назад +8

      @@Meravokas No, current lore is that humans are Reclaimers, which is why the Luminary on Harvest was detecting all of its inhabitants as Reclaimers.
      That’s why the Covenant often needed humans to access Forerunner facilities or activate Forerunner weapon systems. That’s why the monitors frequently refer to every human they meet as “Reclaimer”. Humanity as a whole are the Reclaimers.

      Well... At the bare minimum, first time players had no damn clue why humanity was at war either. Even reading The Fall of Reach you don't get a concrete reason. It wasn't until 2007 when Joe Staten wrote Contact Harvest that we ACTUALLY knew the reasons for everything.
      As for how humanity knows anything about the rings in the show? Who knows. Gotta remember that for a TV series or even movies, there's a lot of unspoken things that may or may not ever be explained. If not for Bungie and Microsoft being willing and wanting there to be extra lore, we'd be up shit creek without a paddle aside from what's shoved in front of us in the games. Given the argument that Silver watchers have to wait for new episodes compared to the games seems off. Considering how much, or accurately little is revealed in the games and had to be covered in EU. Shoot, I believe the first time an Insurrectionist is see in game is Halo Wars, then again in Reach, but they are foundational to the lore. The games and EU also had longer downtime between releases with nothing to draw on. Silver has all previous resources and stories to... adapt.

      Mainstream audiences have *zero* patience for exposition in science fiction media. Caprica was an excellent example of this: Limitless promise conceptually, far more than BSG itself (even under ideal circumstances), but it required too much explanation & setup. DOA. In medias res + "people who care will catch on from context and/or dig into established work" is the only option for SF aiming for broad appeal. The Expanse is the only SF adaptation that ever got close to threading the needles of popularity & purity simultaneously. And sadly, didn't perform well enough to get the last third of the story brought to screen. While I'm extremely fond of Halo's lore & show, it is categorically not on par with The Expanse by any metric and would not fare as well if a similar approach was attempted.

  • @bluehawkgaming6055
    @bluehawkgaming6055 3 месяца назад +6

    You've made a mistake about the differences between the Blue and Silver timelines regarding why the conflict started. While we haven't been given direct information, we do have cause to question the timeline because, in the Silver timeline, humans are not reclaimers. Instead, there are the "blessed ones," which are select individuals and not the whole species. Thus, they would not have reason to commit genocide. At most they may want to covertly or openly take out these "blessed ones" to keep their power secured. This means that the covenant's motive for declaring war on humanity is unknown in the Silver Timeline and will likely never be known based on how poorly the Silver Timeline has handled things.
    While I do appreciate this series idea, I would warn that explaining things in the Silver timeline may go poorly because, to be frank, the show's writing is dog water and greatly diverges from the Blue timeline. Perhaps you could still do this series but focus more on the mainline timeline to help onboard people while pointing out where the Silver timeline diverges and calling out its continuity issues.

    • @rredboyd
      @rredboyd 3 месяца назад +5

      "we haven't been given direct information" thats a massive writing issue. a character by episode 2 to 3 typically will have well defined but not stated goals. yes this includes factions, the writing is so sub-par that we have to debate a crucial part of the plot and story is absolutely absurd. but hats off to you for trying anyway

      @codynovick5701 3 месяца назад +1

      Thank you for actually giving him constructive advice, because I'm commenting as many places as I can arguing that the silver timeline is not content worth covering too. I mean I understand wanting to convert fans of the show to fans of the games but you're not about to welcome these people like they're already fans of the same thing I am. And I'm not trying to gatekeep like that, just that literally they are fans of something that shares a name with something I like but not any other details. Like the show would have worked better as a generic scyfy show, but since they named it halo they have us comparing it to something we know like the back of our hands and it isn't measuring up. If it were only different I wouldn't be so upset but it is different AND worse. So now people are somehow becoming fans of the lame show called halo and then acting like we have something in common, when we don't. Jimmy Rings is not and will never be Master Chief, the most he can hope for is Master Cheeks and lately he hits more like a Jebidiah Circumference or something. Idk I know I'm rambling, but the bottom line is we need to do what we can as a public yo get the show canceled before season 3 airs and make sure that they understand they if they ever pay to make cinema with Halo props that they fucking commit and don't half ass this shit ever again. Bully them like the internet did about sonic until they fear us enough to act with respect

      This contains HEAVY spoilers so you might not want to read it. It’s just necessary to explain the lore and some pretty big retcons.
      Back when Bungie ran the show it was HEAVILY implied and in other cases outright stated that Forerunners were ancient humans. The ONLY accepting to this were the few things that Frank O’Conner had direct control over like the Iris ad campaign, and one third of Halo 3’s terminals. The rest of Halo 3 was made with humans being Forerunners in mind. Truth and the Gravemind both allude to our Forerunner ancestry, and Guilty Spark outright tells Chief that humans are Forerunners. Things in the main story take precedence over Easter eggs and marketing material that most Halo fans won’t look at/for. It was just kept vague as to whether or not we were literal Forerunners, or apes molded into Forerunners through guided evolution. It would’ve had to be the latter since Halo was originally meant to be set in our real world, and you can’t really reconcile literal ancient humans having a galactic empire with what we know about the humanity’s origins from the fossil record. In fact, in Halo 2’s original ending the Ark was located on earth, in East Africa where modern humans originated some 100,000 years ago. This is also when Forerunners disappeared from the galactic scene after they fired the Rings to destroy the Flood before it overran everything. Inside the Ark there was a humanoid skeleton that acted as the template for the Ark’s machinery to guide evolution of indigenous life along a desired path. This being who fired the Rings and had been guiding our development was also implied to be the Abrahamic god, with the more mythical Bible stories like Noah building an Ark to save life from a coming Flood and God creating man in his image were recontextualized as symbolic retellings of Forerunner history and them shaping hominids into a new “generation” of Forerunners.
      This revelation that humans were the children of the Covenant’s gods was what caused the Prophets to wage a war of extermination against us as a way to cover this up. In the book Contact Harvest Me decant bias tells the future hierarchs that the Forerunner relics their Luminaries (devices that detect Forerunner technology) were actually the humans living in the planet (the quote goes like this “For eons I have watched. Listened to you misinterpret. This is not reclamation. This is reclaimer. And those it represents are my creators."). Our existence invalidated the Covenant’s claim to be the true inheritors of the Forerunner’s legacy/technology, and the fact that we were Forerunners who were “left behind” disproved their belief in the Great Journey that said everyone who believed in the promise of the Rings would be saved after they were activated.

    i gotta say, i really like that Installation 00 is always welcoming to new fans of the franchise. one of the things that irks me about many fanbases of [insert genre/ series/ game] is that there always seem to be the gate keeper types who ignore that any content that they see regarding their favorite thing is ultimately entertainment, and thus, is not subject to sticking to a set narrative. for example, there are a lot of halo fans who hate the tv series solely because it doesnt follow the timeline that was established by the games and books. but why should it? a creator wants to create something new and unique within the universe of the story they are telling. why copy the homework done by others just to create a show about a timeline the fans already know about in halo? the games themselves could be seen as interactive movies in and of themselves. personally, i rather enjoy the halo tv series specifically because it doesnt take place in the timeline of the games that ive played since halo c.e. was first released (yes i got an xbox when it first came out just to play halo). it is refreshing to see someone doing objective reviews of the episodes in the halo tv show from a non biased, non gate keeping manner. for that matter, the silver timeline in my opinion is a better representation of how such a situation could play out in real life: the creation of the spartan-ii program in itself poses a host of plot holes in the mainline lore as the spartans never show any kind of animosity towards what was done to them. this simply isnt realistic. people are individuals, and an individual's reaction to finding out that they'd been lied to for years would come with varied reactions and emotional responses. it is one of my favorite parts of the tv series that they have taken the time to explore this since i always felt with the mainline lore that the spartans were too robotic. like they never question their origins, never question why they are doing what they are being asked to do, and simply seem to drink the kool-aid regardless. making master chief become in touch with his humanity is a genius touch in my opinion, because it gives him a better reason to fight for humanity than just "oh this is what you were created for". any soldier, whether trained from birth or not, needs to have a reason to fight that matters to him, and i think master chief is finally showing his reason: to save humanity so he can bring justice for the spartans who've died by later telling their story to humanity at large.

      That, or as many have requested a lot of times: follow one or more marines or ODSTs and keep the Spartans to the edge of the narrative as mentions and brief appearances in order to maintain their mythological status among the troops. The Band of Brothers formula would've worked so well with this setup as you travel with a squad of marines through a season of a dark and gritty campaign of what's becoming a losing war, culminating at the end with the Fall of Reach and the discovery of Halo.
      But alas, studios and corporations think they know better than the fanbase once again...

    And this war is why a rewriting of the lore was needed. So much of it relies of the Covenant being mindless and stupid, and while that's convenient for a computer game, it's a terrible basis for a TV show.
    If the covenant leadership ranks were filled with people , even fanatics, then Truth, Mercy, and Regret would not be allowed to get away with prosecuting the the war the way they did. Doubly so if large parts of the High Council are as back-stabby as those three.

    • @nightterrors2976
      @nightterrors2976 3 месяца назад +1

      The point of the Covenant was to achieve a higher level of existence through the belief of the Great Journey. For mostly of their entire 3,000 existence, they converted species to their beliefs, which they vehemently believed in, as evidenced with the Brutes. Not to mention the fact that the High Prophets initiated the war to cover up the fact that their religion was false through the annihilation of Humanity. They did this for 27 years before it all came apart in a civil war.

    • @anticarrrot
      @anticarrrot 3 месяца назад

      @nightterrors2976 The destruction of Halo only happened because of the war. But for the folly of Truth, Mercy, and Regret, Halo would still exist.
      There is no reason for the High Council to tolerate such failure (or the many lesser failures that doubtlessly proceeded it) or to fail to recognise it. A civilisation that has lasted for three millenia should be able to deal with three idiots, no matter what their station is. And yet that doesn't happen. Because the world of Halo is built on idiot balls.
      Again, that works in an FPS game where people only care about shooting. It does not work in a drama where the people involved, on both sides, have to be more than cardboard cutouts.

      Are you getting things confused? In the games it made complete sense as to why the prophets needed every single human dead. The show is where things break down because now we are expected to believe that they collect special humans while telling the majority of their forces that every single one of us needs to be eradicated? The cognitive dissonance is insane. In the games they needed humanity genocided because if the covenant found out that we were decended from their gods, everything would fall apart. Furthermore, 343 are the ones that initially ruined that lore in the games by retconning it so that there are ancient forerunners and ancient humanity that are separate entities. Then it makes no sense as to why the prophets need us all dead, if we are just reclaimers they could have adopted us into their covenant much like they did with the blessed one in the show. The human covenant war breaking out initially only makes sense if humans are descendants of the ancient (human) forerunners, they find out that any and all humans cannot interact with forerunner technology effortlessly because that means that they should be worshiping us as their gods made flesh but we are weaker than most of the species in the covenant so to avoid losing their power at the head of the covenant to the remnants of their gods they classified us as abominations and gave orders to every member of the covenant to purge us from the universe as if we were the parasite (the flood) since we know that the covenant had been to other halos and commuted with other oracles

      And this is the unfortunate horror of that show even being produced. Some people aren't aware that they are telling a separate from the games narrative in the show. The show is calling it's version of Halo the silver timeline, while the lore from the games is the original. I argue that there are really 3 timelines already, because 343's entries in the main series kinda contradict the lore from the actually good games. Like my personal halo cannon ended at halo 3 and I am still waiting for a continuation that doesn't involve the forerunners being anything other than ancient humanity.

    Just a nitpick, but I wouldn't describe the show as "episodic". Yes, it's a show with many episodes, but episodic shows mean that each episode is largely self-contained. In contrast to episodic shows are serialized shows, of which Halo is one. Serialized shows are just one long narrative broken up into parts by necessity.

    Great video, 00. Don't know why this particular video vrought out so many negwtive voices, but I feel like the writers on Season 2 (in particular) are now beginning to drip-feed more lore details.
    New audiences won't understand the wider narrative if the show is their only entry point, but I feel like folks who have been fans for 20+ years are coming at the show with all of their acquired knowledge/experience and therefore claim the show has "bad writing" because it's not lore-dumping.
    In any case, looking forward to tomorrow and more Silver v. Blue!

    • @dguisinger
      @dguisinger 3 месяца назад +1

      I mean, gamers didn't understand the wider narrative either... they were dropped right into Halo CE right where Season 2 appears to be ending. And if we are being completely honest, Bungie didn't know where it was going either....they made it up on their own. I'm still waiting for the second betrayal in the two betrayals... The stories of all mainline games changed drastically as things got cut and reshuffled. The relationship between Forerunners and Humans changed drastically over the 20 years. So... IMO, its okay to drop viewers in without full narrative explanation. The story will tell itself. I think Season 1 could have moved much faster and ended with the Fall of Reach. There could have been less Madrigal story which just felt like filler. And Kwan could have been less whiny... but it was clear from her first mystic quest that she was connected to concepts from the Forerunner saga books - which most gamers haven't read, and so their complaints about mystics and magic is both a misunderstanding of the show and a misunderstanding of the actual lore. The one scene with Makee & Chief is .... regrettable... Terrible decision, even the actors didn't want it.

      Back when Bungie ran the show humans and Forerunners were one and the same. The ONLY outliers were the few things Frank O’Conner had direct control over. Also, in Halo 2’s original ending the Great Journey was in a way real, just only ONE could walk it. Truth intended to use the Ark’s machinery (then located on earth in East Africa where modern humans first originated some 100,000 years ago) to create a new species based on his genome, becoming God that way. He intended to use the Rings to wipe the slate clean so he could restart the reseeding process with himself as the base for this new species that would one day come to worship him as a god and spread out into space.

    I appreciate the work you are doing to bring new folk into the Halo universe. A part of me wants to see 343 throw out existing cannon and replace it with Silver timeline just to see these complainers and haters heads explode.
    In all seriousness, people need to let people enjoy things they are watching. Don't like it? Thats fine, I don't personally find I need to know how much you hate it.
    And I'm not blindly defending Season 1, it was sloppy. I was still able to enjoy it but it was a constant eye roll. I wish they condensed the season down and ended with the Fall of Reach. Season 2 is improved in almost every measurable way. I for one had an idea what they were trying to do with Kwan in Season 1... her writing was bad, her character didn't seem to have a point, and the whole Madrigal plot was a waste of time... but.... some of the hints they laid in the 1st season triggered someone to say they thought it was related to the Forerunner trilogy of books, I ran out and listened to them, and instantly had some idea of where it was going - proven to be mostly true with S2E7. I am curious if the old mystic woman presenting herself to Kwan is related to a particular forerunner.
    Based on where the show is at, obviously I wouldn't want to see spoilery content as there are twists and turns in the Halo universe that may get reproduced in the show in some form....
    But some ideas:
    1) Covenant species video
    2) Spartan II program origins and differences for silver/blue
    3) Non-spoilery forerunners (might be hard?)... maybe topics such as Onyx being artificial could be included
    4) An explanation of ONI and comparison of changes, and more detail on the UNSC as they aren't exactly "the good guys"
    5) Dr Halsey and her differences for silver/blue
    I think getting into what Onyx is for, what the Halo is, what the last episode was hinting at etc, probably shouldn't be put in videos without major spoiler warnings for people who want to see it unfold however the show presents it.

    0:01 "If you're completely new to the Halo Universe" That explains the mindset of the Show's writers right there, they all seem completely new to the Halo Universe. The care and dedication to the Themes of Halo shown in the show imply they only really have heard of the Franchise and never really dived into it. They may have seen a game trailer, or read a plot synopsis, and maybe watched Halo: Nightfall and Spartan Ops cutscenes but they've never gone into the Franchise. They've never experienced the Sheer Horror that is the Flood Parasite, do not understand the Religious Fanaticism that blinds The Covenant, The Dire Straights Humanity as a whole are in as they are brought onto the Critically Endangered list by their foe.

    That a video like this needs to exist says volumes about how poorly written the TV show is. It's far enough off the games story as to baffle or enrage the gamers, but not explained at all to newcomers. I struggle to figure out what their intended audience is. People peripherally associated with actual gamers that have heard "halo" for the last 23 years, but with little to no knowledge of the universe?

      So, is Halo CE bad because it doesn't explain literally everything about the games history in its self contained story?

      the real audience is neither fans nor non-gamers, its genuine irl Almaos that are interested in how primitive human culture is, as demonstrated by master-cheeks

      @@Shadowhunt687 no halo ce isn't bad because you actually comprehend character motivations for what characters are actually doing, i cant figure out what the covenant or unsc end goal even is in This show. the fact that this video exists is evidence in and of itself that this show is beyond comically written

      @@Shadowhunt687 No, because it's a game, not a narrative, provides quite a bit of emergent story throughout the game, and tells you what a Halo is in the first 6 minutes. How many hours has the TV show had to tell its story, and 00 still has to make a video on "why are the fighting"? It's relying on outside knowledge that the average person doesn't have. Watch the pilot of star trek the next generation. You know what that show is about in broad strokes by the end of the opening credits.

      It's mostly intended for Halo fans but since they knew that the Halo community would relentlessly complain no matter what they added elements to appeal to the Sci Fi audience as a whole. That's why you watch it for what it is and not for what you want it to be. Something that most Halo fans can't seem to get through their thick heads.

    Halo vs the jimmy rings televised fanfiction……i’m gonna be honest if they liked the jimmy rings televised fanfic and are now looking at halo they aren’t gonna like halo very much, they are too different in both quality and story, and keep in mind I will shake hands with someone who thinks halo five is the greatest halo, and |this isn’t a malace thing|, I just simply don’t think anyone who enjoyed the fan fic is gonna like any other halo content

      I have seen many posts from people jumping from the show and wanting to check out the games.
      And then most of the comments are giving them a backhanded compliment for "finally enjoying something good!" So those people exist, a shame they're first impression is getting insulted.

    I wanted to like this show and I do but not because of the right reasons. The wrong reasons are the characters, certain Spartan abilities and wanting to see where it goes. They could have done better. But we here now. A decade too late and a storyline made by a college grad.
