Last thing Joel tells Ellie in this episode, calling her "Baby girl" ... He hasn't called anyone that since his daughter Sarah died, 20 years prior. A clear indication that Joel now considers Ellie to be as much his daughter as Sarah was. Ellie is no longer just "cargo" by Joel.
The way Pascal was able to film and get two shows out so close together is that they used body doubles for Mando, he then went in and recorded his lines later. They actually have the names of his two body doubles in the credits now. Pascal has mentioned them in interviews.
He is such a damn class act.

18:48 I used to listen to a prepping channel on RUclips to prepare for emergencies, storms or power outages. The host who is a Canadian would always talk about his philosophy on preparedness.
Then one day he said something that was very shocking. He said he had met other preppers who seemed to give off the vibe that they wanted civilization to come to an end. He said these folks seemed to want to prefer a lawless world free of law and morality. These preppers saw a stable society as hindering them from being their authentic selves.
This is my take on David. He was a charismatic school teacher with perverted and violent impulses. But because society has laws he had to keep it under wraps. But with the apocalypse, he was now free to live out his urges.
And yo the guy that played David’s right hand man was the voice actor for Joel in the game FYI

Just a theory. But I think his character was trying to kill Ellie to spare her from David's extra curricular activities. If you look back and take in the demeanor of the other men before David scoops ellie up into his arms, you can just tell he was staking his claim.

I love that James, "buddy boy" is played by Troy Baker. He voiced Joel in the video game. In some scenes, he sounds so close to the in-game Joel.
Joel on his worst day kicked their asses. That's some next level Dad Rage.

The guy who voiced Tommy was Kathleen’s right hand man, Perry, in two earlier episodes. And Ashley Johnson, who voices Ellie, is scheduled to be in episode 9.
"Nah bro go back to episode 6" had me laughing my ass off.
Also, David's second hand, James (who is played by Joel's actor for the game, Troy Baker) probably knew about David's interests, and thats why he wanted to either let Ellie go or kill her rather than have her be David's "pet", so i think James was a pretty decent dude given the circumstances.
James is the alright guy who doesn't pretend to be good. Choice between him and the guy who's acting all harmless and nice, choose the honest guy every time.
Imagine being the townspeople... go looking for David and james... find the steakhouse/church burt down... go looking for the food stock... find the deer... the horse... the people...

I’m glad you’ve been enjoying this show and enjoyed this episode. This game means a lot to me and seeing how much people are enjoying it as a show is so fun.
In general, I love watching you react to anything - but seeing your reaction to something I connected to so much is just the best.

I've been waiting for your reaction all week and it did not disappoint! You're one of the few reactors that picked up on the food issue. The fact that a 14 year old survived that trauma at all is incredible. But to have taken out her attackers as well? Amazing. A violent and disturbing episode to be sure, but it was fantastic. I can't wait for the finale next week but not looking forward to no more episodes for a long time. I don't think they've even started filming season 2 yet.
First, Happy belated Birthday to Rom. Second, I am now caught up with JL's reactions to The Last Of Us. I wasn't sure I wanted to watch this until I saw that many other people were reacting to the series. I came to watch JL first and then I will watch some of the others that I am subscribed to. I've never heard of this game let alone played it so, this is a new experience for me too. I sort of binge watched JL's videos for the last couple of days. This has been a lot of fun. JL your comments and jumps are great as usual. Blank, your editing is great, you have kept the show exciting and suspenseful.

Take it from someone who spent months in the hospital with a popped kneecap, 3 ligaments torn and a pulled hamstring, when he put that knife in the guy's knee, I screamed in unison with the man. It happened 8 years ago and I still remember the intense pain,. so when he said 'I'll pop your damn kneecap off, this is the only time this show made me turn away from the screen. Pedro pascal KILLED that scene....
I knew you would feel for Ellie at the end, to see her be pushed to that point. All the good reactors have the same feeling about that scene.
I've found myself judging reactors based on their reactions to that scene... and how quickly they clocked David was creepy.
@@dirtsa2828 I have seen a few people question the explicitness of the series, especially that scene. But watching reactions has shown me they chose that because people struggle with subtext. They are trying to make it obvious to even the dumbest people- but I still think it was done in an okay manner. Not having Joel be the one to pull her off and Ellie having her own revenge was a good counter to the added David dialogue.
The other reaction channel I watch was like, "Mmm, that stew looks good. What is that, oxtail?"

I'm no good to the world when I first wake up, but Joel wakes up ready for action.
This show is the best show I've watched since Breaking Bad. It's incredible.
Nice callback to the game when David mentions "When the Pittsburgh QZ fell . . . Fireflies VS FEDRA".
In the game Pittsburgh is where the Henry and Sam plotline happens, but it's just against random raiders, not Kathleen or any "revolution", just raiders. The backstory to that area though is the Fireflies successfully organized a coup against FEDRA there, but the moment FEDRA was gone the Fireflies got booted out and the whole QZ fell apart; the raiders are there picking through the scraps left behind as infected begin to retake the city.
This all was cut and rearranged to make the Kansas City we know in the show, but I like that they re-incorporated what happened in Pittsburgh like it's still the same place from the game, we just didn't see it.
At every step of the show there's little things like that where even when they change stuff it's clear they care about the source material and make use of whatever they can.
Oh yes ..I'm so glad you are doing this series .. I love your reactions so much ..

Lowkey, I hope Ashley Johnson's (game Ellie) cameo in Ep 9 is as Ellie's mom in a flashback.
That's one part of the game they allude to but never really flesh out, and we know Ashley and Troy Baker both have cameos in the show but haven't seen her yet.
Ashley as Ellie's mom would be super fitting.

the subtle change from the game where in the end joel comes in and stops her after she's hacked up david is an important change that they made. It works better for me in the game.

Spoiler Free gave v series info the Guy playing James/buddy boy (the bitchlol) is the the guy that played Joel in the game. The guy that plays David in the game also plays the lead character In the Uncharted series of games which is made by the same games company and had a really bad movie adaptation last year.
Joel is not awake for most of when Ellie is taking care of him at least not on camera.
Ellie spends a lot for time With David before he is revealed to be a bad guy in the game, He helps her fight of some clickers
together and the game seems to be setting David up a possible replacement for Joel at first, so a lot of the scenes between them are better in the game in my opinion and the Actor playing David in the game comes across better, less bland I think.
You don't see David interacting with his group as much in the game. you hear them talking about him when trying to sneak by them and it seams his leadership is not very popular. It's not mentioned that he is religious in the game. However him being a Preacher was planned for the game a lot of dialog about it was recorded with the actors but it was cut from the game.
Ellie got much further when running in the game
Ellie discovers they are canibals in a more beleaveable way in this show than the game
In the game she awakes up to someone getting butchered by James which makes very little sense as, David wants her to join them and it's not a good look to start off on really.
Also, Ellie in the game trusts David that the food he gives her is just deer meat and eats some of it. I never liked that, I prefer the TV Ellie's reaction of kicking the food away and not risking it.

I really like show-David. He's got that inoffensive exterior but his eyes are dead. If you look up IRL pastors who turned out to be predators like him, they got the same vibe. The actor killed it this episode; super creepy because it's real.
@@samwallaceart288 I think the actor did well with what he was given, the only problem really with this episode and some of the other episodes has been being short on time, this could easily have been at 2 part story as could Henry and Sam's episode but they were only given 9 episodes, so I guess they have pace through some of it. But overall even with some pacing issues here and there it's still a great adaptation.
This by far has been my favorite episode, very dark episode.

There weren’t any people in the street. I’d imagine they were all at home, trying to stay warm & not starve. It looks like the area where the restaurant/slaughterhouse was is pretty far down from where their homes are all located.

@@gerardmcquade9102 they were probably there for Sunday church ironically, then went back to their own places after the food got handed out. It looked like all of the Men/soldiers went out and the rest were the frail/old/young anyways.
I assume they don't all live in a restaurant when there's literally houses right next door.
I could see them living separate from the restaurant / meeting hall. That said it's a pretty big fire so I feel like _someone_ would've come to investigate.
Could've really had a couple people on one side of the restaurant banging at the doors yelling if anyone is in there, while Joel is investigating the other side nearer edge of town but is hanging back because he doesn't wanna get spotted by the nearby townspeople. Just an extra shot and some voices in the background would've made it 100%

I beg to differ. I played the game over and over, even completing it without dying. The TV series is really good. One complaint is that it could have been longer, expanding on parts of the game and possibly more clickers/bloaters. The actors in the show have been awesome.
