Woodland Solo Camp in a Canvas Baker Tent. Campfire Lamb Kebabs. Making Charcoal.

  • In this video, I am out in the woods with my homemade canvas baker tent and the nice, vintage heavy comforts that make this sort of camp homely.
After finding a good spot to set up amongst the trees, I begin to make everything comfortable for the night - tent, bed, seating, cookware, lighting, firewood. On there menu for dinner are lamb kebabs and of course a couple of nice beers to wash them down with. I even managed to make a batch of charcoal to take home with me.
It was a lovely little relaxing camp and just what was needed to unwind after a busy week.
I hope you enjoy the video.
    Thanks for watching.

Being vintage myself at 68 I'm enjoying your vintage camp setup. Used very similar up to my early 20's. It all worked. Thermarests and a few more items make it just that bettter. I checked out the fire cookimg grills your friend makes, top notch. I want them all. We used a percolator coffee maker. Still have it. Coleman lanterns and stoves. Stil have, still work. Like that One Togras floor/door mat. Handy. I have a Mini Aussie, you may want to try one someday. I hadn't had a personal friend dog as a companion in several years as my Britany Spaniel had passed in 1994. This one is extra special. Had her one year yesterday. Don't pass one up if you want loved and to love a dog. You take care. One of my most fav channels. Next time.

My Dad was in the British Army from '59 to '98, and one of the pieces of kit I remember he had was an old army camp bed, very similar to the one you have. Canvas, with rods down each length, and legs that tensioned the canvas. It was quite low profile, no more than a few inches off the ground, but worked well. A design concept that is still being used today, albeit with different and lighter materials. I think his would have been from the '60's or '70s.

Hey Simon, the moment you started to set your tent up, I was thinking, I knew Maggie had been in there and wondered if you could smell her in there, and then you came out of the tent and said "I can smell Maggie in there"... im sure she was looking down at you wagging her tail and no doubt getting leaves everywhere.
Great set up with the baker tent and retro camp bed, I love the old school style of camping, so much sturdier than modern fabrics and with the ability to drive almost to your camp spot was a huge bonus. Food looked delicious as usual and loved the trailer on your Defender.

My very first camp out away from home was in the Anza Borrego Desert, in SoCal. We all slept in Baker tents. 3 kids to a tent that had no floor and we had no mats. Just our sleeping bags. Mine was so thin you could see through it. The winds kicked up during the night and by morning we were covered with sand and dirt. As soon as they served up the hot cocoa we forgot all about that miserable nights sleep. LOL

    Great video as always, Simon.
All the hours you put into making that tent are now paying you back, with interest. I too started my camping under heavy canvas (Millets circa 1974), with an old army camp bed, a paraffin lamp, and a primus stove.
Your mention of Maggie brought a tear to my eye. It must have been lovely to smell her again. She is much missed by many, I'm sure.
Cheesus, that's a lot of pancakes!
    All the best, mate.

Now Simon you know how much of a gear junkie I am that coffee pot is on my search list. I remember that baker tent you made it yourself on your sewing machine. True craftsmanship when it comes to tools you have them. Like that Bedroll you have easy peasy 😂 that was very surprising you recognized Maggie right away funny her smell was trapped inside the tent ⛺️ can’t miss that.❤️ Great video once again it snowed here across the pond very little in my town but wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas 🎄 and Happy New Year 🎉

Goes to show you, Maggie even though not present with you… She’s still there with you Brother 🙏🏼! Someone must have been chopping onions, because I got a bit teary eyed for a tick there 🫡. Great episode, cheers from across the pond …California 🍻👊🏼😎

Good video Simon. The camp stretcher looks like what we had in the 1960's. Very comfy. Previously they were wooden X frames with canvas. Cheers.

Well Simon I’m a grown man and I teared up when you started talking about Maggie, my heart goes out to you and your family. I really like your Christmas videos and I was wondering if you might change it up a bit and get a few of your fellow U.K. Bushcraft people together and have a potluck style Christmas dinner, everyone brings something different and you all share a wonderful feast, just a thought, I only watch you fellas from the U.K. Anyway I just like the way you guys do things, if you’re wondering I’m in the U.S. thank you and I will be watching no matter what you decide.

This is still the best channel of this type. Well done for keeping it going and keeping it fresh.
I love your camping style. Lots of variety in the spread of equipment you use. I think that’s what keeps the shows different and interesting.
Of course, the cinematography is awesome.
    Cheers from Western Australia

Good to see the Baker tent again and the memory of Maggie looms large. The charcoal making was a first for me and very interesting how that process worked. I loved the reflector hoods on the lanterns, where would a fella look for those? Thanks for another enjoyable camp Simon.

I must say I love your tent. You should make them and sell them. They are so roomy and comfortable. To have the canopy addition is such an advantage when it rains and still be able to have a fire under it. Your coffee percolator is brilliant. I have never seen one like that before. Your delicious meal looked amazing. Love the charcoal maker. What a great idea! Thank you for sharing Simon. Love all your videos and those with Andy as well.

Sumptuous feasting in camp! Lamb kebabs? More like lamb stew sans potatoes to me. I love stews of all sorts, especially lamb. A couple of bangers might have gone great with those pancakes. Your baker tent reminds me of my boy scout youth wherein my troop camped with canvas BSA baker tents, although our tents were not quite as expansive as your hombrewed masterpiece. I particularly note your tribute/remembrance of your beloved Maggie. Our pooches continue to tug at our heart strings even after they have crossed the rainbow bridge. Great video as always. Thanks and take care.
