    After years of music production buying all sorts of gear I have found out that expressiveness is the most lacking in almost all electronic music compared to acoustic instruments. It doesn’t matter if you have a 3,000 dollar synth with 5,000 dollars worth of plugins if you only have note on note off articulations, maybe some lfo on the pitch or cutoff.
    That just doesn’t compare to for instance a violin. The amount of articulations there are for 1 note is massive. Short, scratchy, short and stratchy, very short, plucked by the left or right hand, thick, thin, tremolo, wide or narrow vibrato, warm, thin, soft, loud, short or long glide, no glide, legato, and lots more that I don’t even know. And a good player can switch between all these techniques between the notes and even during the notes.
    You can do all this with automation but to me that is such an unpractical and tedious way of making music. That is like 2 hours of drawing lines with a mouse to get the same thing you can do in 30 seconds on a real instrument. I can do a drum track on a real kits in 1 take and it will have incredible nuances in the loudness, the balance, how it progresses over time. Like when you are deep in the pocket you are making all kinds of lines with incredibly subtle ghost notes, subtle accents, locking with the bass, playing with micro timing, etc. To make a midi drum track and draw out all those velocities would take you days.
    Something like the touche really fills that gap. Wind controllers are also amazing. Even some crappy init patch will sound good with the right articulations. Articulations is where it is at.

    I just get the feeling this is a game changer for expressively playing any synth. Amazing amount of customisation and I know there are people knocking that the software is Mac only but I'm sure they will develop out for other platforms. This is a massive undertaking to get everything sorted for things like this at launch, software synths, hardware synths and CV! They sound like they are still developing hard for it so that's good enough for me. I want one! Going to see what damage it can do on my Vostock and Erabus!

    Funny, I was just looking for an XY MIDI foot controller kind of like what the Zoom guitar multi-effect foot pedal has. I realized if I used an XY or even XYZ MIDI gyro controller Velcro'ed to my foot I could achieve the same effect sort of. Then this video showed up, literally uploaded a few hours after my brainstorm. I could probably adapt this to be a foot controller, but I think it would be great if they created an XYZ foot controller that was optimized for that purpose, as this looks like it's best for hands.

    I think I've found my newest Christmas wish item. I love my Seaboard Rise 49, and pairing that with this, would just be perfect. Coming from a violin background, I can really imagine the expressive control over an orchestra patch on a synth. Overblown brass, screeching violin stings to soft smooth sweeps and choppy string bouncing. I've heard some great sample library string and brass sounds and expressive examples but thought they would be difficult to perform. This really looks like the missing link to physically controlling the sound timbre above and beyond a piano keyboard. Sure expression pedals and mod wheels are great, but it's all about the physical feedback a controller gives you. You could open a filter with a pedal while adding a mod wheel vibrato, sure. But that's 2 limbs and for anyone who's played drums can tell you, limb independence takes time and practice. You can control pressure, X and Y movements with just one hand. I'm also really impressed with the level of personal resistance adjustment you can make by taking the top off the controller.

    I've been using a Linnstrument over the last few years, which is great, but there are aspects of how this works that makes me think a Touché would suit my style better, together with a normal MIDI keyboard. An Osmose would have been ideal, but that's definitely out of my budget range.

    @ 8 mins in there is a list of what looks like compatible instruments. If your Instrument isn’t on the list of compliant synths, does it simply not work and do we have to rely on Expressive doing further software updates? Sounds like I need to check first if my hardware is listed before I buy one? Update: my synths are not on the template list. Aah well. I like the product but I wouldn’t build my studio hardware around it.

    Hello! Love the videos! Touché is amazing! I love using it! I play live techno, and it definitely adds another element to the performance. I would love to see more tutorials and/or info on program changes or short cuts. I figured out a couple of workarounds, but there may be an easier way. There are not a lot of tutorials on touché yet. I'm not sure if I misunderstood, but I thought Arthur said something about presets and program changes but he didn't elaborate on the matter. I'm hoping later you will revisit touché and go into it a little deeper.

    Edit: The software is now available for Windows 10 :)
    Original: macOS only for the required Lié software. Seems pretty arbitrary given that it is available in VST format, can only host VSTi, and was demonstrated in a cross-platform DAW. Bummer. I was seriously considering getting one. (I found out it was Mac-only when I went to the order page on the Touché site.)
    One more strike against hardware that requires software to fully function.

The problem with Touche, despite its obvious potential, is where do you put it if you are using say a 61note keyboard on a stand( like an Apex?) for live, ie performance ? Fine for a 25 note on a desktop but beyond that....? Problematic I'd venture ?

    Wondering what NRPN or (what sounded like) sixaxis/sys access is.

    • @dcashley303
      @dcashley303 7 лет назад +2

      SysEx is 'system exclusive' messages which are basically for programming deep and unusual digital programs. For instance you can access the regular Midi CC numbers on a Microkorg XL but if you wanted to change the effects on the device you'd have to control it via it's SysEx. NRPN I believe relates to messages in a DAW, for instance record/stop etc. They're both basically more indepth and machine/DAW specific languages.

    • @chaosme1ster
      @chaosme1ster 7 лет назад +3

      NRPN: let me Google that for you: bfy.tw/E7fr
      And no, it's not DAW specific. It's part of the MIDI spec. It's a way of extending the limited set of 128 midi continuous controllers.

    just a warning that this thing is a complete pain in the ass to use with hardware synths. it's entirely trial and error, going back and forth, back and forth, back and forth from your computer to your synth to get it right. you have to do this for each different synth, too. it works great with most plugins in its native environment but unless you have an entire day to devote to wrestling with the hardware synth process it's not worth the trouble. if there was some kind of "learn" mode where you could turn a knob and then select a quadrant on the device it'd be amazing.

    So it's a foot pedal w/ software that only works in Ableton and the software won't work when MacOS 15 comes out in thee years? And *no* Windows, iOS, Android or Linux Pfffff. You must be joking! When _will_ they ever learn that software is dead. :-(

      You can set up up to 32 standalone onboard configurations and use it with hardware synths in standalone mode. He mentions it in the first 5 minutes of the video.

      A hand pedal, i guess. An odd one. Actually, it reminds me of something else - there was a synth that had a weirdo 3D mod wheel you could also tilt sideways and depress, but the name escapes me.
