    I travelled from Maine to York UK for vacation and managed to see so much History and got to visit the Treasurers House .I found the story of the Roman ghost to be one of the most unusual stories ever.I find it hard that Harry Martindale could invent such a tale of Roman Ghost for personal Publicity.

    At the time he saw these soldiers , it was not known that Roman soldiers in the later period of occupation did indeed carry round shields.

    Ever since I first heard of the "York Roman ghosts" it has been my favourite ghost story!
    I'm in New Zealand and I would love to visit Yorkshire! I love the Yorkshire accent and the natural beauty of the place - the Yorkshire Dales would be my kind of place.

    We did a tour under the treasurers house the other year, it’s odd to be where Harry said he’d seen the romans after hearing the story so many times over the years

    I certainly have never believed in ghosts and such, but this is a story that is unlike most others that I have heard of and I agree it is a bit unnerving.

    Excellent video as always. I teach English to overseas students at a Language School, 5 minutes walk from the Treasurer's House. We try to use York and it's History as a teaching resource . I often play your videos in the classroom. and the students from the Middle East, Japan, Ukraine, Italy ..... are very engaged and can lead to some great discussions. Great work- thankyou and good to see you pop up in the recent BBC series.

    Fantastic, more ghost videos please. It's always easy to be sceptical of ghosts until you're alone in the house on your own. Then your convictions get tested.

    Wonder if the reason no one saw Roman ghosts is because they're all at the old ground level. Maybe there are countless ghosts retracing their old paths beneath our feet.

    Excellent video, and I'm glad you mentioned the Historical genre that the Hollywood film-makers were pumping out around that time. But those round shields though...a very interesting story of a sighting from an age far earlier than the 'norm'.

      It's either ghosts, either an accidental and partial time slip into the past (theres that theory that past, present and future all exist at once, but our brains act like filters to mostly experience time only in a linear way). There's too many specific details confirmed historically for his experience to be a mere random hallucination imo

      There are a lot of things that aren't understood by todays technology, we are primitive compared to where we'll be one thousand or more years from now. One of the worst things people can do is dismiss something because it doesn't make sense or can't be proven with todays technology.

    As a healthy skeptic, The only ghost "theory" I have been able to entertain is that buildings have the ability to store up some unknown psychic energy that susceptible people are equipped to receive and the building plays back a recording to said person. Never seen owt mesen mind but I'm actually prepared to entertain this outlandish theory.

    I don’t believe Harry saw any ghosts, what I do believe he experienced was some kind of recording, an event which is replayed for whatever reason, some call it the stone tape theory. The fact he always maintained the romans he saw were solid like you and I was interesting, he explained that it’s as if the cellar wall they walked out from no longer existed. Truly a wonderful experience he had but frightening at the same time

    • @tudor772
      @tudor772 Год назад +2

      What i always found sketchy about the stone tape theory is that it puts accent on "powerful emotions, trauma, so strong that they energetically imprint themselves on the environment". But how can that be, if emotions are mere chemicals in one's brain? Perhaps many "ghost sightings" are in fact temporary time slips into the past, which is a very intriguing concept because it would imply that time travel into the past may eventually become possible since the past and its people are appearently still out there, somewhere, in a form we don't fully grasp yet. Some people even claimed to have seen dinosaurs in short episodes similar to Harry's, so who knows.

    • @chris7921
      @chris7921 Год назад

      @@tudor772 interesting take, there was a theory by the late Mary Rose Barrington who was President of the Oxford University Society for Psychical Research, she mentions that people who experience these kind of events are somehow able to perceive what a person was seeing in that time, it’s as if the person in the future experiencing the strange event were seeing what a person was seeing hundreds or even thousands of years before, that’s an interesting theory, I suppose it’s time travel, but if time is something that we humans invented, then would it be possible to experience an invent that has taken place in the future? Because really the past, present and future are all happening at once.
      But I have read books and seen documentaries detailing how people have claimed to have seen battles such as Gettysburg and other horrific events replayed

    • @tudor772
      @tudor772 Год назад

      @@chris7921 that's something interesting to ponder. There's many people claiming to see the future in dreams or "visions", many people dismiss such claims but some of the accounts i have heard are pretty crazily specific (i had 0 belief into stuff like this until one of my former girlfriends had something like this happen to her), and every culture around the globe in every epoch had these notions so who knows. I do believe that the future already exists, it's just that our brains are wired to act as a filter making us experience events in a linear manner, but maybe every once in a while "cracks" happen. It would be definitely very interesting if we can harness this ability one day. I did not know about that theory so thanks for the reply, it's definitely an interesting idea. Have a good day!

      What causes the stone tape to play a certain episode in time? Romans marching doesn't seem very emotional or unique that it would need to be played again by a stone tape. My own speculation is that the playback is done through the will of a spirit who wants to relive the episode again. One of the things that I hear again and again is that there is no time after death. Near death experiencers tell us this, so everything rehappens in real time and can be repeated in real time. A no time zone would also explain how an omnipresent figure can be everywhere at the same time. I like to speculate that's what might be going on in ghost sightings.

  • @bulkington
    @bulkington 2 года назад +2

    I don't believe in ghosts but I remain open minded and I find the paranormal a very interesting subject. The first thing that came to mind was that Harry said that he fell off of his ladder after seeing the ghostly apparitions. I wonder if it might have in fact happened in a different order? E.g he had a seizure and fell off of his ladder, or fell off of his ladder and then hit his head, then he hallucinates the terrifying ghostly figures and gets the order of events confused in his mind. Granted that doesn't explain his unusual description of the Roman soldiers, but the description he gives might well apply to a number of different soldiers from antiquity or the early medieval period.

    Actually since he did not describe what we think of as the normal uniform of the Roman army he most likely did see the Ghosts. They did not interact with him so they are what is called a residual haunting. Basically a repeating tableau due to certain atmospheric conditions bringing out the "vision" from the surrounding area (aka The Stone Tape Theory). In very recent times we have figured out all paranormal activity emits electro-magnetic fields that can be monitored, recorded and with intelligent haunts (actual people who still exist in another form and those evil things we title demonic entities) interacted with. The UK is one of the most haunted places on earth. Like having an established (Government) Church has ruined religion for most people in the UK, "Most Haunted", an hour of phony psychics and a dozzy bint running around screaming all night has ruined paranormal research for the UK masses. If you haven't seen a Ghost you can't really in your heart of hearts believe they exist. When you have seen a Ghost you really can't believe in your heat of hearts that they don't exist. Archeologists some time in their career will run across haunted places unless they are a sensitive as a brick. They have caused a lot of problems digging up sacred places. The spirits really don't like being disturbed. Battlefields are a place where the dead linger. Historic ships are another place that holds spirits. There are a number of haunted airfields in the UK also. There is a Centurion who marches along the Strood on Mersea Island. Most likely another Residual Haunt. The first recorded sighting of him is from 1904. There is a burial mound not far from the Strood that is thought to have a least one roman burial in it. As a Historian I bet you'd love to have a chat with someone who has been around before.

    One can't help but wonder from whence our mind draws the information to produce such imagery. Whenever I hear such stories, I always play this mental game of what was he surrounded by and start guessing from media, to surrounding architecture to hobbies, which combination of stimuli in the person's life could've fed their mind?
    Ofc the reason such incidences are so intriguing in the 1st place is because the answers to our questions around them have proven unanswerable.
