Improving the Mounting Bolt Play on the SRAM NX Eagle Derailleur for $1

- It may not be perfect and there is still some play but it's a BIG improvement on the NX 12 speed derailleur's mounting bolt. The wave spring washer costs around $12 with tax for a pack of 10. Anyone wanting to try this, I will send a free wave washer to the first 7 people that request one as a thank you for watching. The newer XX1 b-bolt kit below should work much better:

Great vid, Tony! Another fix that works is to replace the existing O-ring with one from McMaster Carr part # 9262K123 It's a little bit of a trick getting it assembled but it works. I carefully squeezed the edge of the assembly together in a vise with soft jaws and fished the spiral external retaining ring in to the groove on the bolt with a dental pic similar to what Tony used. I also applied some Park PPL-1 grease to the bolt before assembly. I lucked out with this discovery...I had an O-ring laying around from a different project.
Great info! I will pin it to the top
I took my GX derailleur off my old bike and went to put it on my new bike but the rings fell off. They came loose for some reason and I had zero idea how it all went back together so this video is EXACTLY what I needed. You have no idea how happy I am that I can finally get back to riding after weeks!! Thank you so much
Glad it helped!
I found that 8mm ID skateboard bearings can be used take up this slack. You use just 1 of the outer dust seals from a bearing, they come off with a blade of screwdriver
Your explanation helps me save my GX derailleur that’s some how the snap ring get loose and everything comes apart when taking the derailleur out. Good video thanks!
Wow..... Amazing job done. I'm having the same issue with my NX and now I know what exactly to do without changing the derailleur. Thanks a lot for the video.
Great job Tony! Amazing what some patience and determination obtain...
Thanks for this. I had 2 mechs and used the best from both to create a new one. I also found the split ring to be the most difficult stage. I used a syringe from a kids calpol medicine to slide over the bolt with the split pin mounted on it. It was then able to slide the split pin down into the correct place. I spent over 30 mins trying to do it before without success..
You my friend are a genius and this is deserving of a Nobel peace prize!
😂😁
So here is a tip if you have an old 10 speed (only one I can verify) x9 laying around... it also has the wave washer in it and it fits the nx perfectly
hmm, I have an old broken xt 10 speed derailleur. I'm going to find it and see if it does too.
I just discovered this issue today with my NX RD. Thank you for the informative video 👍🏼
Check out the video on the B-bolt kit upgrade. This works but the only washers I could find are carbon steel which could rust in the future. Make sure you coat them with grease if you go this route.
@@TonyHob thanks Tony will do as this is my plan :)
Thank you for the video - what an improvement over the stock configuration. I was about ready to buy a new derailleur before finding your video.
Same here, nice work! Thank you!
Hi great , great engineering solution and very well explained. Give yourself a payrise! I will see if I have the courage to pull apart my shimano rear derailleur as it has wobble and has ghost shifts, many thanks
Man, i would like to upvote more than once, thank you!
Genius just the stuff i love to watch. Great video mate
Tony's Hobbies: thanks for that video. I tried using a circclip plier/needle nose plier. Putting the ring back worked like a breeze😉
👍
Nice work!!
I am facing the same issue with my Sram SX Eagle 12v. Due to my bike is under warranty I just contacted the manufacturer and they will ship me a new one to replace the problematic SX Eagle. But, I will do such a hack just to reuse it on another bike. so, thanks for the video. greats from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Ah! btw, I created that video ruclips.net/video/uDIZ3eKXW3o/видео.html showing the slack in my NX Eagle. the SRAM shipped today for me a new one. let's see it!
I went and rode Tower and Big rock today!! I saw your car at the south trailhead on my way out. It was a little chilly this morning but it was a great ride!! Hope you had a good one too!
Great day to ride today. We had a small group and had a blast. Rode Great Wall CW
Just did this but wasn’t able to buy the XX1 kit anywhere. Out of stock. I found a SRAM Force rear derailleur (for road bikes) I had laying around for parts. Turns out it has the steel wave washer AND the main bolt is the exact same size. Free if you or a shop has an old der laying around.
I have pics but it will only let me upload a short clip here, not a pic. 🤷🏻♂️
That's what I was looking for. Thank!
Just some insight. Have x01 with bushing and sleeve. Sleeve is proper slip fit in bushing but oversized for bolt. I solved mine by jamming sleeve full of grease and between all the orings the grease shouldn't migrate out. Been working great.
Add GX jockey wheels and you have a really good derailleur.
Good job! very brave of you though to work on that kind of table with small pieces :)
Great observation! I live dangerously 😎😂
Hey all! ... I've discovered it's impossible to get these springs now (in the states). So I'm working with an engineering firm to have some made (with some possible design improvements). I'll post them up on pinkbike after testing and the first batch arrives.
The SRAM ones are a cheaper stamped & crimped design, they were once using a molded wire (lasts "forever"), but SRAM changed to stamped to save money... I'll be having them coated (probably blued or black oxide) so they don't rust like the Chinese made springs...if it's not possible to spec in a stainless steel
That would be awesome, feel free to post it here if you are able to get it done. I can pin it to the top 👍
@@TonyHob so! I did some more research, and the issue with this would be losing the seal/oring allowing dirt and grime to get into the bolt, and damaging the aluminium housing. I did get a quote, and these would be 0.50- $1... Each to manufacture in stainless, and I'd be selling a product that would eventually ruin the hardware. . . So I'm not so sure I want to invest $500-$1000 to kick out a product that isn't to a high enough spec, that I would even want to use myself. I think the best option would be to buy a cheap pack of o-rings, and just swap em out as they fail, or spend the $35-40 to upgrade the bolt to the version with the bushing and o-ring
I informed the sales technician at rotorclip why I've decided to cancel my order, and they agree that it wouldn't make sense to market.
If anyone else wants to pursue something like this, please be honest with customers and explain that it will ultimately lower the life of their equipment.
You can just buy them off the shelf, but I'm using copper washers as they are soft and cheap
@@Derkenblosh2 Hey James, thanks for digging so deep into this. So just to clarify, if you have anything other than a rubber O ring in there, it's eventually gonna attract dirt and grind out the inside of the housing? If you do want to go down that road though, is there any reason (and maybe @Tony's Hobbies can chime in here) you can't just use a normal washer? I guess I don't really understand why you'd want any play whatsoever in that area of your bike..? Basically I'm desperate to get rid of the play in my rear mech and I would take a shorter life span of the part to achieve it!! Thanks again both of you pioneers. :)
great stuff, had to be shared.
The zip ties for getting that clip in are crucial. I ended up with 4. LOL
I mailed out the last washers I had today. Those that have received them have told me the mod works well! Link to a pick set: amzn.to/31Pt3gr
Thanks for your video and that you provide your solution. There is only one mistake. The outer diameter is not 15mm it is exact 16mm.
You can also make a washer yourself from a soda can.
Did you do that? I'm thinking on doing the same because i live in a thirld world country and cant get the washer that he uses in the video :(
If you did that can you answer some questions? 1. Did you just put the soda can washer or you added the rubber oring as well together? Aaaand.... How did you cut it?
@@marcoscg930 Hi! I am not sure about the rubber o-ring, I think I put it in as well. The soda can washer doesn’t have to be perfect. Just roughly cut out the shape with sharp scissors.
thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!! this saved me much $$$ I also have the exact same pick set lol
i also have a play similar to that in my nx 11. But the derailler works good up now .
It’s not as critical as on a 12s system but it’s still an improvement
Great video 👍
I couldn't find any wave washers of this size in the uk so I ordered rubber o rings 12 x 15 and 1.5mm. I placed two of them at the back of the bolt then put the bolt in the hole. This meant I couldn't put on the lock ring as not enough space but once fixed to the bike it eliminated 100%of the play.cost £1.65p for 5 pieces in uk so if anyone in uk need any i can give the link on ebay.
Hey, do you have the link please? I am UK based with the same problem!
@@HairyBookcase www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143481494252. remember u wont beable to fit the lock ring on but you dont really need it,thats just to keep everything from falling apart. These rings will eliminate 95% of the play.sorry for the delay i couldnt get the link to work on my phone.
that is really amazing, now u have sram... :D
ThNks bud
Sram junk! Mine won't even stay in gear...and it's because of a $.005 o ring??? Good god, what junk
SRAM skimps on their lower end stuff which is honesty overpriced. My 11 speed Shimano XT drivetrain cost less and is WAY better
I'll take one. My derailleur has the same play issue.
send me an email with your address to tonyrantonio@netscape.net
Unfortunately this did not make a different on my NX derailleur. I will happily be replacing this NX stuff with some Shimano gear.
I have 2 Sram GX 11 speed derailleurs, and I can not get the bolt out of either of them. Took the wavey washer out and the bolt slides up and down the hole but will not actually come all the way out. It seems like the end of the bolt was made like a hair too large to be pulled out on both derailleurs. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the great tips on installing those wave washers. Unfortunately, Amazon is out of them. Do you want to sell a couple of yours?
I can find 12mm x 18mm wave washers all over the web but not 12mm x 15mm. Looks like you went through the same hunting procedure.
I am all out. I literally gave them away to my viewers. The B bolt kit in my other video is really the best long term solution, but it is expensive
@@TonyHob Thanks but I found some in China. My shifting went from a bit sloppy to exactly perfect like it was when the bike was new.
Wow! How i want one friend to give my used parts for 5 dollars. I realy love to buy broken parts and fixed it. Sorry for bad English
I was really lucky!
@@TonyHob Yea and I think same. I see you Chanel soon and I don't really understand what's your derailleur
Which one would you recommend? The old style with the wave washer or the new style with the bushing and o-rings.
The best way to go is with the XO1 kit I show on the follow up video (bushing and O rings)
Have you the dimension for the remplacement washer ? I would try on my SX who run with the same play problems. But I only found washer in 12mm(inner)x18mm(outer) or 10mm(inner)x15mm(outer).
And the washer on your link (out of stock and sold in US, I am in Europe) is 12mm(inner)x15mm(outer).
Thank's to you !
12x15 is the dimension. I had a real hard time finding them. The ones in the link were the only ones I could find.
@@TonyHob Shit. It's ok to find 12x18 or 10x15 :/
The other solution could be to machine a washer a bit, but it's so fine...
Thank's to your help !
I notice the washers you linked to on Amazon are carbon steel. Is oxidation or galvanic corrosion a concern?
I have the same concern. I lightly covered it with grease and believe they will hold up. I would check them in a year to make sure it’s ok. Sooner if you ride in wet conditions regularly. Good point to bring up 👍
I just ordered the washers. What do you think about doubling them for less play? My NX derailleur has tons of play and shifts like chit.
It should work but the snap ring is going to be really difficult to get back on. The single washer has worked well for me.
@@TonyHob thanks!
Great Video Tony!
Have you tried the XX1 Kit you recommended? Based on the picture provided on Amazon, it looks like there are 2 rubber type O rings that take up the play? Over time wouldnt those slowly degrade and result in a loose fit and back to square one? Or an I not seeing how all the mechanics fit together? I purchased the wave washers and disassembled the B Bolt assembly. I tried to get creative when putting the lock ring back in place and ended up bending it to all hell. I'm in the position now to just purchase the recommended XX1 kit. Thus..... me wondering if you tried it and the results you have gotten. Thanx again and when I get this resolved I have wave washers available if anyone wants them..
Paul, this weekend I plan on making a video on how to install the kit. I have had a hard time finding info on how exactly it mounts. I found a diagram on SRAM's site that I think will help.
Thanx for the info Tony. I went ahead and ordered the recommended kit. I'm a big stickler for loose play in anything associated with my MTB. Have you noticed how loose the jockey wheels are with the NX? No bearings, all bushings. Im installing a Jockey/Bearing upgrade today.
Yes! I actually bought a GX for my build and have the NX as a spare. Not much room for play in a 12 speed system
XX1 video ruclips.net/video/mcnpBxeb4Nw/видео.html
Thanks Tony...100th like! Do you happen to know the thread size that is used on the B-Bolt for the NX? I slightly messed up the threads in the derailleur hangar and need to chase the threads with a tap, but first need to know what the thread size is. Thanks for any help!
The thread to the derailleur hanger should be M10x1.0 You can also get a new hanger if it is replaceable. Usually $8-10
@@TonyHob That’s awesome Tony, thanks. Ordered B Bolt kits for the NX and XX1/X01, and also SRAMs new UDH universal derailleur hangar. Interesting differences between the BBolt kits. I’ll let you know how it all fits on the YT Izzo.
What shifting issues might one expect from a worn out bolt like what you started with?
Skipping gears and not being able to adjust it
Hi Tony, the link for the washers seem to be currently unavailable. Do you know or anyone know of another link to get the washer? Thx
I searched everywhere before finding them at this link. I couldn’t find one single source other than that one which is pretty crazy. Buying the B bolt kit in my other video is the best way to fix it and should last years but it is expensive.
Is it possible to have a functional derailleur without the waver ring and/or split ring as they're just holding the b tension bolt stopper tto the b bolt?
You need the split ring to keep the bolt and derailleur together, the wavy ring or rubber grommet are needed to take care of the play. Without these the play would let the derailleur wonder and ghost shift
@@TonyHob yes there was definitely play without them. Unfortunately I don't have a dental pick so this is becoming something of a rather arduous task 😂
Harbor Freight, set of 4 for a dollar 😁
They use the crush washer on the GX version, took me an hour to get the split ring back on 🤬
definitely the hardest part!
@@TonyHob i click that link on amazon for that washer..and they got like 3 sizes in there..M8, M12.4..which one that u chose?
Is there a way to replace that wheel bearing that auxiliares the cable when shifting? Got a bike 3rd hand. And that wheel bearing is all eaten up and doesn't spin freely. What can I do? 😂
this is about as close as I could find but I don't know if it can be adapted to other models amzn.to/3BXF5Ei
@@TonyHob yeah I've been looking for a solution the whole day today but it's seems like only srams high end derailleurs can have the the cable pulley changed/swapped or upgraded to let's say an aluminium cable pulley
Great friend i need one of these!!! Where can i find it please? Amazon?
Link is in the description. If you are in the US I can send you two of them for free. I found that 2 works even better.
Can't find these anywhere... Anyone on here in Vegas or close that can mail a spring?
When I was searching for the correct size spring washer the Amazon link was the only one I found with the correct dimensions. Even then, they are carbon steel, I could not find stainless. It’s crazy that they are not more common.
Would be great if you could send one to Ireland. I'll pay the postage.
Send me your address, I’ll see what I can do
@@TonyHob I emailed you the address. Thanks very much!
Jakub
Great Friend i have the same issue on my NX RD did you use M 12.2? Thanks
I used the ones in the link. They were the ones ones I could find that would fit
@@TonyHob M 12.2 ? The sram GX bolt kit works to?
@@TonyHob im not living in the usa and i have to be very sure before buy it..
Yes, the GX kit works too. Make sure it’s for the 12 speed.
@@TonyHob thank tony i will buy it in amazon only one washer is needed?
What is the side of the original oring and the wavy washer? Is posible put a different rubber oring of same size?
2:00
@@TonyHob thanks. The wavy washer is metálic or rubber?
@@rallyps it's metallic. The ones I found are carbon steel which is not ideal. The original ones are stainless steel. I would recommend doing the X1 upgrade I show on the other video.
Finally I solved the play with a standard rubber 15mm o ring. Fine by now...
It should hold up well for a while
I could really use one of those washers if possible..

Great video extremely helpful. I'm definitely a subscriber. Thanks
Sorry, I already sent them all out
Now that I think about it, I removed the one on this video whenI installed the b-bolt kit seen on the second video. If I can find it I will send it to you 👍
is shimano altus similar?
No
Whats the name of the tool you use?
amzn.to/31Pt3gr
What is the name of the tool you use
It’s just a pick amzn.to/3dSGyAR
Hi what is the size of that wave washer you use?
2:59 12mm ID, 15mm OD
Thank you 😇
So sad the only available size here was 10 ID ,15 OD
Can I use a regular flat washer? Or wave washer is way better option?
It has to be a wave washer to give it tension. Unfortunately the only ones I could find are carbon steel which will eventually rust
Hello, would you send one to europe ?
Stefan, I can’t promise anything but send me your address and I’ll try to send you one. My email is tonyrantonio@netscape.net
Ok thanks
It’s such a bad design imo from the start for taking up the slack.
