    Having ridden all these drivetrains in one form or another, I can tell you that it's worth the extra money for GX or even XO1 if you are a hard rider because the tighter tolerances machined into GX/XO means it can stand up to abuse with little to no missed shifts.
    As I write this, Sram has yet another groupset called SX. This came on my Trance and within about 2 months of riding, the plastic in the rear derailleur came loose from the rivets and shifting went out the window.
    Not recommended, stay with NX or higher.

    I saved a ton on my bike by getting a GX level build, but I still wanted the crisp shifting of the X01 on my old bike. Upgrading just the shifter to X01 made shifting feel like X01 without the price. Totally worth it and a great easy upgrade.

    Thanks for the video, great description. I went from a 1x10 with a 40 tooth One-Up plater to GX Eagle this year. About 900-1000 miles in, absolutely love it! Here in the the Pacific Northwest with DH and all mountain style of riding, I always felt that on climbs I needed an extra gear despite my fitness level. Eagle solved this issue and then some. 2 x 10 will soon be only for XC riders or people living in a place where there is not a lot of elevation change on trails. Keep in mind, despite your budget, going from 2 x 10 to Eagle, you're shaving off hundreds of grams anyways: front derailleur, extra shifter, and an extra chain ring. Another thing to note is cost of upkeep on GX/NX vs XX1. Chains alone are $30 vs. $80.

    XX1 is for those XC riders wanting the lightest bike. XO1 is more of a performance trail/enduro group set. GX1 is all trail/enduro affordable version. NX1 is a perfect introduction to eagle with for an all around budget bike. I ride GX1 with XO1 cranks. Might change my cassette to an XO1 next.

    It certainly seems like a lot of money and risk to get xx1 eagle just for improved feel. I know that at the top end this isnt a problem as the pro's can break things and replace them for free but to a consumer having a £200 mech snap off is a killer!

    Bought the NX eagle groupset for a 2014 Scott Spark 29er, which came with a 3X shimano system. My NX eagle shifts just as nicely as GX and XO1 kits that I have ridden a lot. I had to swap the bottom bracket to the SRAM DUB ($32) but totally worth it. Since my wheel had a shimano hub I knew I needed a different driver hub or wheel, The NX works on a Shimano hub. The NX eagle is awesome.

    • @kyleslater5245
      @kyleslater5245 6 лет назад

      Good to know. I guess I need a bottom bracket. I want to put eagle on my kona entourage (I know it’s stupid but it’s my money) gx would require bb, hub/rim and the kit. If I can get nx that wouldn’t be noticeablely more weight on that bike and I could just get a new bb. Now to find one I like...

  • @boowiebear

  • @jeffbratteson7007
    @jeffbratteson7007 4 года назад +1

    Okay, here's how I see it. All these groupsets work solidly well. There's about a 500g difference from NX to XX1 Eagle. That 500g costs about $1000. Okay, on the flip side, a good size poop in the morning is about 500g and is free (maybe makes you feel a bit better too). I'd go for the good size poop or lose some weight option. If you've fully exhausted human weight loss then I guess then XX1 Eagle might be your best bet. That's my 2¢.

    You're great man! I feel the variance is so minuscule it's easy to get ripped off! Especially shopping brand, to brand, etcetera, and not weighing things yourself. Especially when it comes to something like hubs, where there's just random brands you've never heard of. I feel you'll never get what you truly want. Last time I was in the bike shop, they actually gave me a whole different rim than what I asked for, I don't think you'll ever be happy. What I've come to learn is, "just buy the entire bike"; when you start screwing around with parts the cost goes up, things don't work, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

    I have both the XX1 and GX and they both shift great, but I have noticed a big difference in responsiveness between the two with the XX1 feeling faster and a bit cleaner than the GX. If not worried about weight the price point of the GX is worth the slightly lower shift quality.

    My last bike had XO 11 speed group, but I went with GX Eagle on the new rig. Coming from a family of machinists, I really like the high end SRAM cassettes so I will probably upgrade in the spring. I snapped my XO cranks on the old bike though, so I am probably going to stick with aluminum cranks. Bang for the buck on GX is really good. Thanks for the detailed break down !

    I agree with the feeling part. I went from an older 2008 sram XO drivetrain and bought a new bike with a 2021 NX eagle. Right away there is a massive noticeable difference. The older drivetrain just felt way more crisp, quicker, and all around better when shifting. The new one works and shifts well like you stated but it’s all the feeling.

    The main difference in chains is their longetivity. I've had X01 Eagle for over a year now and this is my experience. I first got GX chain and I did 1050km on it until it was ready to be replaced. Now I have X01 chain and I just passed 1500km and the chain is barely stretched at all! I was told that the golden XX1 chain lasts even longer, I will give it a shot if I ever wear this one out.. :P

    I use a wolf tooth GC 49t on my Sram 11 speed 11x42. It works fairly well , with very little adjustment to the B screw. When I contacted Sram before I did so , they told me no way it would work. They first gave me this reply:We can 100% tell you, being the derailleur designers and manufacturers, 42t is for sure the maximum clearance for our 11 speed 1x rear derailleurs. So I thought this was not a very good answer as to why, then they added this :All derailleurs have a limited amount of clearance for any specific large cog. The 1x rear derailleurs are meant to move in a horizontal axis that also follows the tooth profile of the cassette range, with the distance of the top pulley teeth to cog teeth distance set by the b-adjust screw. For the 1x MTB rear derailleurs, this distance is 15mm. This distance allows for the pulley and chain to be moved over the next cog without contacting the cog during the shift. Any cog larger than intended by design for the derailleur's capacity increases risk of contact with the upper pulley and/or potential for chain jam if the chain does not clear the adjacent cog during the shift as intended due to space limitations. Here's the stated derailleur clearance limitations for all SRAM derailleurs:
    MTB:
    The Eagle 1x12 speed rear derailleurs are designed for clearing a 50t maximum cog.
    1x11 long cage rear derailleurs are designed for a maximum large cog of 42t only.
    10 speed MTB rear derailleurs are designed with a 36t maximum cog.
    9 speed MTB rear derailleurs are designed for a 34t maximum cog.
    Road:
    Long cage road 1x rear derailleurs clear 42t max large cog.
    Medium cage road 1x rear derailleurs clear 36t max rear cog.
    Medium cage WiFLi 10 and 11 speed 2x road rear derailleurs clear 32t max.
    Short cage 10 and 11 speed 2x road rear derailleurs clear 28t max.
    Warranty is void for any use modifications to these ranges. Use of cog extenders or use of cassette that exceed these ranges for these derailleurs are at your own risk. So why do the manufactures of these extenders seem to know what the max cog is? Or does Sram just believe that if you want lower gearing, you should upgrade to their 12 speed systems?

    I love my GX group, but here's a tip for bigger riders or anyone who puts down a ton of power: go with the x01 cassette, if possible. Not because of the weight, but because of the fact that x01 is machined from one piece of material (except for the 50 tooth). I went through two GX cassettes in 200 miles of riding because the pins that hold the stamped rings together get loose, the cassette starts creaking, and before you know it you end up with bent cogs and crap shifting. I upgraded to the x01 cassette and haven't had any problems for 400 miles. Worth the price, imo!

    Finally someone that clearly explain the differences, thanx a lot !
    You didn't mentioned the differences between the Sram NX and the Sram NX Eagle (same thing for GX, XX1 etc...) ?

    • @WorldwideCyclery
      @WorldwideCyclery  4 года назад

      Glad you liked it! And yeah "Eagle" just implies 12spd and fur larger cassette. All the older NX, GX, X01 and XX1 are 11spd.

      @@WorldwideCyclery thanx for your response ;)
      I'm about to buy a MB but it comes with the old NX 11speeds. Im looking how expensive it is to upgrade to GX eagle as 12spd is becoming the standards...but I think you have to go to the university to understand all the components of a bike ahah

      Cracking a joke at the rush to market. Product cycles were a bit longer in the past. I like Rotor, just picked up their BB, but their drivetrain will barely scrape the surface of the drivetrain market. Shimano has done something risky/exciting this year, but we all know within a year the new xt will come out, within another year Sram will release pterodactyl. It’s really all about competition and maintaining market share.

    I ride an NX on the Roscoe 7 and Its really nice. But after spending many many hours of slow and fast pedaling on the bike and really getting a feel for it I can feel many areas where it could improve so I could easily understand the Gist of this video by saying "you can just feel the nicer ones are of a higher quality" without actually riding them myself.

    Pro tip from sram.
    It's all in a shifter pod, buy the GX derailleur and get the XX one or x0 shifter pod. also change the cables and housing to Shimano, they are supirior, sram housing isn't pre lubed and their cables are thinner diameter, if you just switch the cable to Shimano and not housing , the Shimano cable is thicker and will get caught up in the sram housing.

    I'd like to see durability tests on the GX, X01 and XX1 cassettes. I put in high miles (about 10000) on the trails and ate through a few cassettes last year. I've run both X01 and GX, the latter being more affordable but heavier. I'd spend more for the XX1 if there was a marked reduction in wear rate with the TiN coating but the pressure points on the teeth are so small I think that coating will be gone in 100 miles. Other than the cost of cassettes the x01 drivetrain is fantastic. I have not adjusted anything since I bought the bike 16 months ago and it still shifts perfectly.

    Running the GX on my Spartan, love it, climbs like a goat. However my local shop suggested an X01 chain at the end of this season for longevity. Maybe some carbon cranks for good measure 👌.

      My GX chain was between .5 and .75 on a park guage in 6 months.. have replaced with X01 because a friend with an X01 groupset on a Whyte T130 has got over 18 months out of his chain and still going strong.

    Like to see a video comparing 27.5, 27.5+ and 29er wheel sizing. Like to hear some simplified geometry talk regarding the whole long travel 29er craze. Maybe something of a guide as to what kind of rider ought to consider what wheel/travel combo.

    I bought a used bike that came with X01 Eagle. I had demoed the same bike with the GX built and I would lie if I said that it s worth the difference. The GX is spot on. Personally, the difference is barely noticeable. Love my X01 but will buy GX next time. I m not a pro...

    I drive the GX and i think its the best Price/value. It shifts a little bit rough but i like it, because it shifts very exact. Would recommend it for an Enduro (E-) MTB. Additional i would recommend you to upgrade some moving parts like Chain and Rolls into XX1 Series, its a bit tougher and more long lasting, especially if you drive an e bike.

    Gonna make the swap to a GX deraileur at some point from NX. Seems like a wise idea to shave some weight off and get a “better” shift. Ive whacked my NX off a number of things so far and its held up well.

  • @freddysign

    I have GX Eagle groupset and practice all mountain and a little of enduro. The Group is nice but I bent the derailleur. In GX Eagle Group, the derailleur is not so well built like their big brothers, is some weak. After some readings and advices, I decided change for a X01 Eagle derailleur. I think is the best option for the price if you do jumps and technical downs.

  • @johannesrohrl2283
    @johannesrohrl2283 6 лет назад +1

    I would go with X01 shifter because of the feel, X01 Cassette for the weight and GX deraileur because it is cheaper to replace when you rip it of. Crankwise i would stick to my RF Atlas cranks.
