2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime Review - Winner Winner RAV4 Dinner

- 4k The best selling passenger vehicle in North America is the Toyota RAV4. For 2021, the RAV4 gets another version, the Prim PHEV and it looks like a real winner for our first take. If you're on the fence about going full EV and you want an SUV, this will tick all your boxes. Just because it's an SUV/Crossover, it's no slouch with 0-60 times under 6 seconds. Fully charged, the Prime can travel 68 kms in just EV, it may even do better, you'll just have to watch the review.

This thing is piece of art. Toyota have done it again. Best car manufacturer
Very thorough, concise review that covers all the important features including charging, range, driving feel, a/c heat pump et al.. I have watched dozens of reviews and this is easily one of the best.
I agree with David Gapp's comment.
Agree 100%
Excellent review Brian! Very informative and thanks for showing the full EV 'tank' drive.
Great video. I just learned about heat pumps and how they work with efficiency.
Hi
Great job, helped me a lot in choosing my rav. Im going from a landcruiser to rav as kids are living away now.
Really enjoyed this review, you look comfortable driving this car.
great info! looking forward to getting a Rave4 prime xse!
Great review , my next suv awesome suv. Hard to get this suv right now there is a waiting list
Thanks Brian your reviews are very informative keep them coming. How about the 2020 Nissan maxima.
Great accurate review 👍 I would do a comparison between a Tesla Model Y vs a Rav 4 . I just did 2 videos on my friend new Tesla Model Y . If we go to Canada I will look you up
Great review of the Rav4 Prime.
Thanks to you (Everyday Reviews), we have one of the best reviews from Canadian prospective.
Nice work Brian. Good job.
I was surrounded today by 4
The new 2020 Highlander Hybrid needs an option for this power train that delivers 302 HP instead of the 250 or so HP that it is being introduced with.
I love taking that highway from Lillooet to Whistler on my motorcycle. Great views
Awesome review! It was nice to meet you at Cypress that day! Cheers
You had the true BTS 😂. Cheers!
No belt in the E-VCT and they last forever. There's no friction components at all in there. They are a brilliant design and brilliant car overall. Toyota remains the best brand on the market.
Great video full of use full content love the Prime, if I purchased one it would have to be the XSE with the Tech Package in Either Magnetic Gray Metallic or Supersonic Red.
Nice review 👍
Great video/great vehicle... I have the Rav4 Prime SE, and my only real upgrade I believe is needed is faster charging. It needs to be able to charge at an L2 charger in two hours vice over four hours
I own a2020 Toyota RAV 4 xle awd and it’s amazing
I have a great interest in cars and languages. That's why I've seen a lot of rav4 prime revies by many different people and languages.I can say that you are among the top 5.
Thank-you for the kind words! Where are you from?
@@EverydayReviews2022 Sweden :)
Yep. Down to earth 🌎, right to the points.
Probably the best Prime review to date. Well done sir! You earned my subscribe.
Awesome. Thanks! Feel feee to share 🙏
Nice to see a Canadian reviewer but he needs to be more technical, talk about vehicle specifications. You should also try Alex on Autos, I really like him.
I can wait :)... all my cars and van are working perfectly so I will get one whenever they are available - I ain't going to pay thousands over the sticker price just to be the first. Let the peoples with money get theirs and the crave eventually will die down.
Great review as always, keep up the good work! 👍
Thanks 🙏
I’ve got that exact same car, bought it in CT and brought it home to TX.
JLM Are you happy with the RAV4.
How did it drive back to TX.......I do a lot of hwy driving,.....Boston to Georgia and TX......just wondering if its a good fit for me
Thank you very good review I like to get this car unfortunately it will come to Toront in Jan and a very few, any advise how I can get one, thx
would love to see a Venza PHEV
Lovely review. I always say I would have love to get the XSE prime, if I had the money. I still will settle for the regular XSE Hybrid.
Nothing wrong with that!👍
in Quebec the XSE Hybrid is cheaper than the regular one lol (we get 13 000$ off the base price due to government program promoting electric vehicules)
I have a Prius Prime still have 1/4 of a tank since first fill 2174.799 klm so far my commute 22 klm

Not a great idea to keep the gas in your tank for a long time.
Fill it up with Ethenol Free fuel only to avoid issues.
What an incredible car.
I have been told by one Toyota dealer, that the Scrap-It program is only for a used EV vehicle.
5:35 big plus for the RAV4 Prime for sure 👍
Thank you very much!
exelent review , what. are kilometres, and your on the wrong side of the road,i enjoyed, informative and to the point, thanks
i phoned local dealer here in uk doo what i dont know,i will find out,but you gave me all the answers,
How does the Suzuki A-cross compare with the 2021 line up? Does it save you money going for the Suzuki RAV4 or is the package different?
Thank you for this wonderful review my question is how does the adaptive cruise control work in stop and go crawling traffic?
I’ve seen a lot of people switching from TSS 2.0 (Toyota Safety Sense) to Open Pilot (an open source Auto Pilot alternative by comma.ai). Pretty much a $1000 version of Tesla’s Auto Pilot.
Subscribed.
Hello Toyota, when are you going to launch this car in India?
can this vehicle be controlled from a phone? for e.g. in winter can I start heater early morning while its charging at home?
Ooh, shiny. Looks nice, love the wheels, but it seems underpowered though. Appreciate the review and thanks for posting.
@Hugh MacIsaac Well, must've only focused on the part @ 3:40 where he mentions 177HP, but you are correct. 302 combined HP, nice. That is very fast.
I always watch your reviews. Could you please tell how long is the wait to get one of this? Thank you!
All depends where you live. Seems if you’re from a smaller area, you have a better chance of getting one quicker then in a large city. I’d just check with your local dealer.
Hello Sir, quick question... is it ok to cruise control this vehicle either in EV or HV mode ?! Thanks :)
Can you get a tow hitch with the tech package?
Surely the range is dependent upon many factors. Such as how fast you accelerate, the number of up and down hills, if you are driving at night when you have lights on and whether or not you use the air conditioner.
Surely... milage may vary
does it have telescopic steering wheel?
once the battery runs out and it is operating only on gas does the car only provide 177 horsepower and 165 torque??
how did u get that in british columbia dealers r telling me that car will come in February and only 5
You state that SE model in Canada ( not in USA) comes with 6.6 on board charger, same as XSE model.
Does Toyota Canada have this in their Specifications, as I cant find it?
As of today , in quebec , their's a waiting list of about 2 years !!!
haha what the hell? In BC it's about 2 months, im on the list for a red one if it falls through with another sale that I could get in the next month.
Great video Brian!
I got my Prime a the end of July in Victoria BC. Only 5 weeks into it but I'm loving it!!! I get about 80km EV in mostly highway driving!
Am I only the only one who noticed a car in the ditch at the 9:00 mark???
Just when Brain is talking about the handling? Sad & funny!
The SE does have a power gate but not a kick trigger
Not in Canada.
Bumper to bumper traffic coming from sea to sky highway...? Yeah thats North Vancouver for you. haha. Also I am so getting this XSE Tech Package. But dealership says there is a 2 (two) year wait for these cars. Hopefully Toyota revamps production to make the wait time shorter.
4:23 any idea how often you have to refill the AC refrigerant? And is this considered “liquid cooled”? Thanks
No more often as you would your AC system.
Hi love your review can you clearify how the rebates work in bc. i live in White Rock. thanks
on the rav4 prime 2022
❤️TOY😊 oh! What a feeling goes places in a FUNTOY.
Good video review. In BC, the scrap program applies to pure EV only, so the RAV 4 Prime does not qualify.
Copy that. Yes I misread the chart. Thanks.
not true, the chrysler pacifica plug in hybrid van is on the list . The manufacturer has to make an application to the scrap it program, Toyota can't be bothered, they don't care about their customers.
I heard from the Toyota dealership near me, they said 300 people waitlisted just to preorder the prime in the Vancouver area.
I’m not sure what their allotment will be but I’m sure that they will sell ever single one they can get their hands on.
Called more than 30 dealerships already. It seems like the only way to get a RAV4 Prime before 2023 is moving to another province, like Alberta lol.
That’s brutal.
I am on number 65. Now it all depends on dealerships honesty...I guess they'll just sell to their near n dear ones lol
Jack Liu I’m sure that most dealers will order as many top of the line XSE’s as they can to maximize on total sales dollars. I know that’s what I’d do. There will be more in 2021 I hear. These are also all made in Japan, not North America which could be part of the reason for the lower initial numbers.
I'm not sure if I was more impressed by the vehicle or that amazing natural beauty around you on your test drive. Where was this shot?
It was on the Sea to Sky highway on Vancouver BC on the way ty Whistler.
I think this is a better, more detailed review than Zack and Andrea’s 😬
Yay!!! I’ll have to rub it in with him 😜
Ours is more fun...
Motormouth that’s fair 😉
I only have one person lol.
Other reviewers say the heat pump will not work below 20 degrees one reviewer gave up after 45 min cabin temp only got as high as 28 in 15 degrees temperature
I can’t comment on that unfortunately, it want that cold when I had the vehicle.
Nice review... my only comment is some of the info in regards to trim levels and rebates is misleading. Each province rebates will vary.... For example, I just ordered a xse and it does not qualify for the rebate because I added the tech package. Any thing over 55,000 does not get the 5000 off. My car was coming in at 56,800... Go figure. I now have a xse no tech. Too bad. I’m currently in Nova Scotia for those who are interested. Just check with your local dealers that’s all I can say.
Sorry about that. I was under the impression that as long as the base was under 45K, then it qualified even with options. I may have read it wrong then.
I just read the TC guidelines again and it seems a little confusing then. It states that higher trim levels up to 55K are included but it also states that -You will still be eligible for the incentive even if delivery, freight and other fees, such as vehicle colour and add-on accessories, push the actual purchase price over these set limits. I guess they’re classifying the tech package as a trim rather than an add on which I don’t agree. If it was a trim it would be called RAV4 Prime Tech, not XSE with tech package.
Yea, I agree. I think every province is doing its own thing. I was disappointed that they were gonna charge me 11000 more to have the tech packaged added on.. That’s just crazy. I’m surprised Toyota is even charging for all the extras over and above the xse trim... I would have thought they would include it. If I hear different from the dealer, I’ll repost. My car is scheduled to arrive Mar-May in that window..:)
Toyota, please prime the Highlander.
Yes exactly.
In Quebec it's a no brainer. Buy one. In BC maybe. The rest of Canada it doesn't make financial sense. In Ontario I just got a hybrid limited. The equivalent top end Prime would still cost 10K more even with rhe 5K fed rebate. It would take me about 8 years to make up the cost savings in fuel. That doesn't include the cost of hydro which in Ontario is the highest in the country.
It is definitely priced at a premium. I thought it qualified for the BC scrap it program for an additional 6k but I was mistaken.
Do not buy a hybrid just for fuel savings or the environment, it is a vehicle made of steel like any other and you will never make up the difference in fuel. Buy this because you like the way the vehicle drives, just like any other vehicle purchase. With a Toyota hybrid you get more performance and the torque of the electric motor changes the feel of the drive. The Prime gets you a full power electric drive train.
It’s actually less environmental friendly b/c of how much mining and processing is involved for the batteries... It’s all about the sales pitch... We live in a funny world. If you really care about the environment, just buy a bike.:)
@@johnbradley2449 All cars have batteries in them, there must be at least 50 billion Lead Acid batteries out there most of them not properly thrown out. I will say that I do not think that batteries are the way forward, I think we people particularly in North America need to rethink how we have been building cities the last 70 years.
J Rus I agree with you on both points but a lot of people buy hybrid thinking’ they are helping the environment. In one way they are, in other ways they are not... It almost balance it self out in reality... Unfortunately, until we advance as a society and they can teleport us from one point to another, the vast majority of people will need to pick their poison.
SE comes with power lift gate or is it somehow excluded for Canada?
Not in Canada.
Best color u can buy, u won't have to Wash it frequently
U should compare Ford Escape plugin 🔌
Would love to.
I have an old, cheap nissan leaf with around 18kw battery capacity left. The ideal second car I use 90% of the time. I get around 120k range. Why does the RAV get half this range on battery for the same amount of power available?
Much smaller battery.
Older Leafs are great second cars btw. I have a friends hat used one for commuting.
Great review. Was it quiet inside, not alot of road noise from the tires?
Yes, fairly quiet.
I am in Quebec, being told earliest availability will be in 10-12 months...
You’re so lucky. Most of the Canadian allotment will be in Quebec.
@@EverydayReviews2022 yeah, consider my BC friend told me they are selling 2022 already at dealers...
Plus you get 13k off! So jealous👌
@@EverydayReviews2022 that's why they are all sold out
Our lease is due on sep 2022, we already reserved it. They have promised is plenty of time to have it ready at the time we need to get the new lease... So plan in advance.
Another nice car that we, the consumer, won't be able to buy anytime soon. Toyota made pitifully few of these for the U.S. market (I think it was just under 5000 for the entire country). Even if you do manage to find one for sale you can expect insane dealer markups. Oh and if you were thinking of trying out the Ford Escape Plug-in as an alternative you can forget that as well. I haven't been able to find a single one for sale anywhere in the United States as of this date (10-6-2020).
Ok, how about a full EV; those Hyundai Kona EVs and a Kia Niro EVs sure look nice but, again, nope...they are only for sale in the 12 ZEV states. Even if I bought one out of state and brought it back here to Mississippi the dealers say they wouldn't be able to service them here. The Nissan Leaf has terrible battery thermal protection (as in.. it has none whatsoever) that leads to excessive battery degradation in hot climates. That leaves me with the Chevy Bolt, which I must admit was a lot of fun during my test drive...for about five minutes. The seats were extremely narrow and it felt like I had a javelin sticking into the left side of my behind after just a few minutes of sitting down. Seriously you'd have to be Slenderman to fit properly in Bolt's seats. Chevy was gonna fix that in the 2021 refresh but they just announced that the refresh won't happen now until 2022.
I know I'm ranting. I just feel these companies aren't really taking electrification seriously. Obviously I could buy a Tesla, but to be honest I'm not a fan of the minimalist interior design and the extremely high number of defects that are being reported on new purchases. Maybe Volkswagen can make some waves with the ID.4...
Not a rant at all. Just stating the facts. Local dealership around me has rows and rows of Bolts. I agree with the seats other than that, it’s a decent EV with usable range. I have a feeling though that the ID4 won’t be any easier to get either.
hey Dude, is Driving Television cancelled, history, bye bye?
Can you charge the rav4 or any car with a generator while driving?
Depends on the size of our trailer i suppose.
One question . . . after the battery charge is all used up, how long of a drive does it take to top up again?
Overnight with 120V, about 4 hours with Level 2 charger.
@@EverydayReviews2022 I know about plug in.
But what about driving?
What if a plug in is not available? How long a drive does it take to top up the battery?
I feel it really important to know how pricey it is to replace the batteries and those fancy head lamp systems out of warranty? Can one over ride auto-breaking on icy roads?
58k for xse tech package.. omg for a rav4?? I mean how do you justify the fuel savings over a regular hybrid.
It also has a lot more horsepower than the regular regular hybrid Rav 4. Look at the comparison, you get what you pay for. And judging by your logo you live in Edmonton. In BC gas prices are through the roof so using EV to commute to and from work every day will save thousands in gas a year...no joke...thousands. We were spending between $300-$400 a month on gas on our Van, now it will be that a year.
Congrats! Great review! Sadly, you didn't explain the different drive modes. Especially, difference between "HV" and "Auto HV/EV". Still great job.
Gotta save some for the next review. Only had a day with this.
@@EverydayReviews2022 Glad you'll be doing another one. Looking forward to it!
If I continually plug in, will this lessen the charge capacity over time?
No.
it will degrade over time as do all batteries
I own a Prime SE
18.1 kWh battery
14.682 charge capacity 81% (the capacity is not an accident - 80% is the optimum charge for a lithium-ion)
Heat pump and liquid cooling of the battery.
Toyota builds quality and I expect my battery to last the life of the equally impressive engine.
Toyota had done a great job on battery management.
18.1 kWh usable is about 14.8 kWh which is about 80%
They have a liquid cooler and heater to maintain optimum temp adding to battery life.
Resolution of the camera is crap (2019 RAV4 Hybrid) my 2010 Rx450 has better resolution, c'mon toyota, dont cheap out on the obvious. But still wouldn't deter me from looking into Prime...
You gonna get the prime for the fake leather and basic amenities found in the basic trim levels? 🤔
@@DUNGSTA yah thats exactly why I'm going to get that
Well you get what you get and you don't get upset.
I'm not upset... and these forums are actually a great way for car companies to makes changes... the screen is not a deal breaker for me but would be a good change
They're not gonna make changes. They just get free advertisements...
Quebec gives 8000.00 and federal 5000.00 dollars off. Yes u read it 13000.00 as incentive!!!.
those roads are awesome to take a road trip , which route is that ?/?
It’s the Sea to Sky highway from Vancouver to Whistler
2:12 "Power liftgate does not come with SE" -- this is not correct, both SE and XSE have this feature
I didn’t said it does. I said power tailgate only on XSE and hands free on XSE with tech package. That’s why I said that it’s a shame the SE does NOT come with a power tailgate in my closing. I’d rather save 5K with the SE than buy the XSE though. I apologize if this isn’t clear.
Just thought, this is for Canada, other markets might have different packaging. Are you in the US? If so, that’s probably the case.
We have the Rav 4 SE in USA with the weather package.

um, what wax did you use? that thing is gleaming!!
Don’t know what wax. I’ll see if I can find out
Will you still get 300HP if you never plug it in?
Yes. We own the Rav 4 Prime and in hybrid mode you will always have enough battery juice to provide 302 hp
@@rncondie How much over sticker did you pay if any?
great car too bad Toyota is only making 5000 this year - none for the Southeast US

Basically if you live in Quebec you have to be insane to not buy one of these. LOL
If you can get one that is. They’re gonna sell them as fast as you can make them.
@@EverydayReviews2022 Dealer in Quebec told me when I signed up with a deposit today that delivery is expected beginning 2022
I called today and am now on a 1 year+ waiting list....
Quebecer here and got mine last week. I was on a waiting list since early February. You really have to hope that your dealership gets enough and good luck if you're waiting for an SE. They're basically unicorns.
I'm due for a new vehicle. Doing everything I can do find one of these. Any trim, any color is a unicorn right now in the Maryland, USA area. I will most likely have to wait a year when production increases to normal.
How much does a RAV 4 XSE Prime costs in Canada?
51K before applicable incentives or rebates.
@@EverydayReviews2022 wow... that's a lot of money for a compact SUV. Thank you for your answer and keep up your car reviews!👍
@@EverydayReviews2022 is that for the SE or XSE?
XSE. SE is $44,990 Cdn.
@@EverydayReviews2022 Hi again, what is the tax rebate in Ontario Canada for an electric car? Is it up to $5000 or $7500?
BC scrap it program is EV only no plugins qualify except Pacifica Hybrid 2020 for some reason. RAV 4 prime will be difficult to purchase due to the long waitlist. EV incentives will expire before some customers take delivery. Luck of the draw for some buyers.
I thought I read that the RAV4 qualifies but after reading their site, I guess I glanced too quick as it does have the RAV4 but only the used EV. If you can get one, will still be able to get the $6500 for the fed and provincial programs.
My pipe dream!
It's a nice looking suv but for its price I'd rather pick a lexus.
At that price ; I will go for a Lexus and call it a day
How do you check your air pressure on the 2020 RAV4
I would buy one in a heartbeat... If Ontario had an EV/PHEV incentive program...
I mean come on, they scrapped it because it was catering to "high income" people who didn't need it, back when people were buying Teslas like crazy. Quebec still has a program with incentives as long as the MSRP is under $60k. WHY CAN'T WE GET THAT?!?!?! $8k provincial rebate, $5k federal. That $13k makes a huge difference. I might just move to Quebec and learn French so that I can use that deal. /s
Canada could become a PHEV/EV leader if our provinces would fucking give us the ability to reasonably afford PHEV/EVs. Plus it would add move PHEV/EVs to the used car market. Just... Why... :(
Why not a fully digital instrument cluster? It makes no sense to me. And that infotainment screen is just five years old at best. These things aren't expensive, but just does a lot for overall impression of quality. I feel someone at Toyota missed the memo on modern cars. Not to mention how appalling its AWD seems to be. Idk, to me that's one strike too many, which is a shame because those things fixed would make this a very attractive car.
Very few will be made and they are ridiculously expensive. 47 ev miles WTF.
u live in canada
Yes.

You can see why this is number 1 in Canada! It’s a NO Brainer. And Toyota Dependability. Glad I watched your Video before Zack’s Review with his new Star his Wife, Andrea LOL.
Actually, it's pretty complicated using public chargers, unlike what you say at 11:50. Only some chargers will work with this car (there's no universal charging port out there), and public chargers almost always cost money, and they can be complex to use. The only place that you might find free chargers in my experience is at work or maybe at some airports.
I think your mileage will vary with that. I live in Pittsburgh PA and hardly any of our level 2 charging stations are fee based. Also, North America has two charging standards for usual L2, Tesla and J1772.
You say in Canada the XSE package is just over $51,000 and the tech package is an additional $5400
But on their website Toyota says Hybrid XSE "from $38,880" and the tech package is an additional $2,830
What gives?
source: www.toyota.ca/toyota/en/build-price/rav4#
That is the regular hybrid not the Prime PHEV.
On the website, look for the Prime, it’ll say coming soon.
