Same! I was able to slide the linkage back on the shifter to get me home. Ended up getting the bushing from the Toyota dealership and his video helped me fix it for good! 😂

Have a 2003 Corolla. The cable/grommet apparently gave out as I was backing out of a parking space effectively leaving me stuck in reverse. A little creative backing and I got it out of the way into another parking space. I called the Toyota dealer (4 blocks away), explained the problem, and was told it was likely the a disconnected shift cable. To have it towed the 4 blocks, parts and labor would be $800-$1200 and 5 to 7 days to get it done. Then I found this video. Had my buddy come take me to the parts store and rounded up some tools, returned to the car and in about an hour was all fixed and ready to go. Can't remember exactly what the grommit cost, but paid for it with what little pocket money I had on me. Roy, you and this video saved me a TON of money and prevented the dealer from putting the screws to me. THANK YOU!!!

You are an angel! I got out from surfing & I couldn’t get my car in gear. I called a friend & he told me what it might be & I looked up your video & was able to do a makeshift fix in 10 minutes, until I can get the little black rubber piece. Thanks man!

Thank goodness for you doing this video. I just had this problem and called the local dealership and was told they don't sell the bushing, but I can bring it in for them to look at it. I bought a replacement bushing for under 10 dollars and fixed it in just a few minutes. I saved a few hundred, I'm sure. Thank you!!!

OMG I am so glad I found this video. This just happened to me and I thought I was looking at hundreds of dollars in repairs. Took off the plastic trim around the gear shift and I could see that the cable was simply off and the bushing was gone. Simple fix. All I have to do is order the bushing and install it and I'm good to go. Imagine how many people don't know this and end up taking the car to an unscrupulous shop were they will charge for a new cable, labor or who knows what. Thanks Roy, you're the best!

My granddaughter had just spent $1,500 replacing fuel pump the night before and she cried when she tried to move her car under carport because the transmission was not responding. I would like to thank you for taking the time to make this video. I had the same problem and it indeed was the bushing wearing out and disintegrating. The most helpful part was when you recorded yourself reinstalling the new bushing. I was struggling with that part until I paid attention to your technique. Note: WD40 as a lubricant works great as well do not try this without some type of lubricant.

A very common problem with Toyota and I dare say other makes. Toyota suppliers have obviously gone for a cheap design linkage to cut cost. My friend was stuck with this problem on an open road with no idea of fault repair nor indeed location of fault. Thanks for the video.

I think the cable didn't come loose yet otherwise you are not able to shift at all , mine on 2003v6 Highlander went to neutral after it broke or the came out of the bushing, but great demonstration and saved the cable from getting loose for many years to drive and shift!

Hi. I was hoping you could answer a question for me. I have a 2004 Sport Corolla that had a broken transmission shifter cable that needed to be replaced. Is this a piece that can be vandalized by someone if they want to wreck your car. Is it easily accessible? I'm sorry to ask such a random question, but I'm hoping someone can let me know exactly where the cable is and how easy it is to break? Someone recently vandalized my car and I am worried they may have come back and broken the shifter cable. Thank you to anyone who might be able to help me with this information.
