  • When exploring van bed ideas and choosing a van bed frame design for your camper van conversion (or skoolie) there are three BIG design considerations to keep in mind. There's the foldable bed design vs. permanent fixed design with under-bed storage. Also is enough headroom above your bed. Finally, there is the van mattress which needs to be the correct size. We review these issues as well as do a van tour to show the complete construction of a functional permanent, fixed-style van conversion bed that does not require drilling holes into the body, has additions to prevent squeaking and creaking during driving, and has loads of storage under the bed including rubber tote bins and sliding drawers. Van life can be hard, so get your bed right, and cheap to stay on budget!

    Are you a crazy lunatic? I don't know, but this video, of the dozens of van camper conversion videos I've seen, finally sets up a path for me to start sleeping comfortably in my bed. Other videos have made me paranoid about moisture getting in. Is this something you have to worry about?

      It really depends upon the climate where you are residing. If you are in a very humid location, I would imagine it is. I typically am in drier areas away from the coast so don't experience condensation or dampness.

    I don't have a van, although I kind of want one, nevertheless it was interesting to see your configuration and the advice on how to build it. Knowing myself I would have made it the wrong height, hit my head on the ceiling the first night using it and have to redo it the next day. Good tip! 👍

      I've seen videos where people spend half a year on a build and then use it the first time and find they are bumping their head - and it's not trivial to fix because of how elaborately they've done everything. Ouch!

    What if we think you're a crazy lunatic but still like your videos? Are we still allowed to subscribe? ;)

    I spent my working life working out of E-250 vans I don't remember them being wide enough to sleep across the van. However I never slept in them. How wide is your van at the top of your matt?

    • @SwellerVanDweller
      @SwellerVanDweller  2 года назад

      For me it's no problem at 5'8". The width at the mattress is 6'2"... but I've not sacrificed any precious width to insulation or anything else - my 1/8" luan panels are the only thing attached to the walls. My bed is also a full twin so if I was taller I could probably still manage by sleeping at a bit of an angle.

    How does the partition / support slide in in the back?

    • @SwellerVanDweller

      Good question. Not sure exactly what you mean, but the removable portion isn't actually screwed in - just kept in place with a snug fit, slotted into the main brace as shown in the video. So, to remove it I just have to open the barn doors and pull it out with a gentle tug.

    How do you keep your van ventilated so condensation doesn't build up?

    • @SwellerVanDweller

      I've never had to worry about condensation because I mainly reside in dry climates and avoid extreme cold below freezing. With that said, I do have a $8 DIY net I made to stretch over the back barn doors when it's very hot and I want ventilation: ruclips.net/video/k6wUZJTN8-w/видео.html

    Hi, Is that 3/4 plywood ?

      @SwellerVanDweller  2 года назад +2

      Not quite, it is 5/8" and is fine for me (150 pounds). You may want thicker if you are heavier or there are a couple people on it.
