So the reason Steve was set aflame is that Paimon is the God of Mischief. He sets it up so it seems that Annie will have some big redemption moment by throwing the book in the fire and freeing themselves from the connection to the demon - but the demon just lights Steve ablaze to mock her. The whole point is that no matter what this family did, this was their fate by blood. There are no rules. That's why there is a scene earlier in the movie in the classroom where the teacher discusses fate/inevitable outcomes. Annie and her children were born to die as a sacrifice. Steve was a bystander to the cult.

    • @JuiceLabs
      @JuiceLabs  3 года назад +30

What about Annie's brother that hung himself? It was originally his fate, but he killed himself, which proved it wasn't inevitable

    • @danwilliams2551

@@JuiceLabs When I say inevitable, what I mean is that the only actual escape was death. That, to me, counts as inevitable. Your options are to have the possession happen or die. That's why annie screams "I WAS TRYING TO SAVE YOU" to peter in her dreams. But as long as they were living and breathing, this is what was going to befall them. That's the tragedy of it all. There was no possible happy ending for this family: death and misery is their bloodright.

    • @shaynestewart9297
      @shaynestewart9297 3 года назад +13

Well said. It was a misdirect. When annie first tried to burn the book her sleeve caught on fire making it appear as if they were linked. Steve was just in the middle, the last man standing between Peter. So Paimon did a reverse trick This time instead of Annie steve gets caught on fire.

I don't normally want cinematic universes, but I do here. And only just so this director can give us ONE movie where some form of good triumphs over evil, or even just some form of neutrality isn't devoured by it. Like...just one win. Jesus.

I think the mom tried to kill Peter in her sleep because she subconsciously knew something was horribly wrong. Deep down she knew her mother wanted Peter so didn't even let her near him as a child.

To be honest, this storyline is similar to the Last Jedi. Luke wanted to kill Kylo for the same reason you’re saying the mom wanted to kill Peter

@@ashigaramii__ Not saying that. Luke overreacted to Kylo needing therapy. Annie didn't know about the demon stuff until it was too late, but subconsciously acted out to try and "save" Peter.

    1) Right after the funeral, when they come home, if you turn up the volume, you can hear people walking upstairs.
    2) Near the end, when we get a shot of the house at night, we can actually see all the naked members in the forest around the house.
    3) The father was a psycologist and Annie was her patient before(very hard to spot)
    4) The doll house effect was purposely there to show you that the characters have absolutly no will and they are being controlled what ever they do.
    5) The first time we see Peter in the class, we hear about the story of Heracles and how everyone is inevitable, even one of the student says: "I think it’s more tragic - because if it’s all just inevitable, that means the characters have no hope and that they never had hope, because they’re just like pawns in this horrible, hopeless machine.” Well, that was a nice summary of the plot of the movie.
    6) When it's night and Peter wake's up at the end, the mom is in the top left corner of the room watching him
    7) If you look at the Picture of Paimon, he's holding 3 heads (grandma, mom, daughter) and he's holding a cane that is an arm pointing. When Peter got possessed in class, his arm went up like the cane.
    8) There's a light coming in screen everytime there's a ghost(demon) manifestation.
    9) Annie spill up a bottle in one scene, well, if you look again, annie never touched it.
    10) When Peter is smoking under the stairs with his friends, he start choking, that's because one of the friends passed him a joint. That joint was made with the same herb they described in the book and was necessary for allowing a possession. That's when he became vulnerable to being possessed. Also, at the end, you can see that the friend who gave him the joint is bowing with the other members in the treehouse.
    11) When Charlie is walking outside and see the grandma (it was the grandma's body) around the fire, you can see the footprints on the ground, which means the cult member placed the grandmother over there, it was not a dream or an illusion.
    12) You guys were talking during that scene, but when the mail slide throught the door, you can see a pamplet about a seance. They tried to influence Annie, but she didnt go. After that, Joan went straight to her in the parking.
    13) The smiling man was the same naked man in the doorway at the end
    14) What Joan screams at Peter is the three words that you can see on the walls in the house: Satony, Degony, Eparigon
Everything was planned, every scenes, every dialogs, every camera angles. That movie was one of the best crafted movie of all time. It is a cinematographic masterpiece.

Great reaction! One additional detail: she tried to kill the kids with paint thinner because deep down some part of her already unconsciously knew something horrible was going to happen to both of them later on, and so killing them early would be a mercy. In her dream with Peter, where she says "I never wanted to be your mother," at the very end right before they go up in flames, you can hear her crying, "I didn't try to kill you, I was trying to SAVE you!"

The scene right before the grand finale of the movie, where it's a outdoor shot of the house and it flips to nighttime, if you look closely throughout the field and trees surrounding the house, you can see the naked cult amongst the outline of the forest. So while Peter was waking up and his Mom was in the corner of the room, that's when the cult made their way into the home.

The spirit of Paimon was in Charlie the whole time (until her death). The cult members knew this and that’s why the guy was smiling at her at the funeral and why the woman waved at her outside the school. To them, he is their idol and they worship him. The cult systematically orchestrated her death (roadkill in the road, symbol on the post, etc) to release Paimon’s spirit from his female vessel. The ultimate objective was to get Paimon into the son since he desires a male host. Peter envisions Joan calling for him to “get out” so Paimon could take over his body. In the end, Peter dies from falling out the window and Paimon takes him over. Cult wins.

That scene with the grannies apparition, is probably the scariest thing that I've ever seen in horror. Mainly because it plays to my idea of what a real ghost would look like. The after image of a person. No other movie has really hit that level of capturing that idea.

I think this film is an allegory of generational trauma and hereditary illness - the way these issues can be passed down through families. In the case of Annie, I think she suffered some psychological after-effects of having been raised by her cultist mother. That left her with lasting emotional wounds and a feeling of detachment from her own kids, which manifested in scary ways - including dissociative events in which she tried to kill her kids. Basically, what began with Peter's grandmother passed through Annie and ended up killing Charlie and transforming Peter. The supernatural/horror elements stand in for the more mundane ways this sort of thing can happen in real life (whether it's behavioural issues that get passed down, like alcoholism or drug abuse, or whether it's poverty, genetic disease - whatever). Using the horror genre to explore this issue really highlights how horrifying familial trauma and/or disease is and how much we fear it. That's how I interpret it, anyway. Interesting movie and cool reaction!

Keep this in mind: At the end, when Peter is being chased around by his mom? He has no idea what's happening.
In his mind, his mother is trying to kill him out of anger regarding his sister. He's tormented by a straight up demon, and doesn't even get the peace of mind in knowing it wasn't his mother, turning against him herself.
God. Why does a movie so heart wrenchingly sad have to be so well made.

    Spoiler:
This is going to sound fucked up, but I think the reason she almost burned her kids while sleep walking was to prevent the cult from getting a vessel (she just didn't know it). Maybe it was divine intervention trying to save them? What makes this tragic is whether the good guys win, or the bad guys win it still involves the demise of the family. The cult would of never been able to bring "Paimon" to earth if Peter wasn't around anymore. The overall theme is fate so I doubt anything would of saved them, especially once Annie got tricked into doing the séance inside her home. One of my favorite fucking modern horror film in years just pure dread.

The mom (Annie) thought she could save the family by burning the book even if she died in the process. Paimon, The King of Mischief, got a joke out of it by burning the husband instead. In that moment she became the most vulnerable person and he possessed her. If you watch the scene where all 3 are together after Charlies death, you'll see the blue light racing around confused, because in that moment everyone is equally vulnerable. Also, if Annie had burned Charlie, Peter and herself that night long before, the cultist's plan had crashed. So, maybe something good guided her when she sleepwalked.

my favourite theory is that the hereditary bit is a long line of mental illness since its verbally confirmed annies dad had psychotic depression and her mom had DID and a variety of other issues that ended up being passed down to annie and her brother and to charlie and peter and the trigger for their descent into madness was because a very real cult of ppl were manipulating a grieving tradegy ridden family and all the paranormal stuff was in everyones heads except the dad who is a psychologist and doesnt have a history of mental illness in his family.
This would mean we're seeing a story from a cluster of unreliable narrators and the entire experience between annie and peter is a type of Folie à deux or shared psychosis because through out the film we never ever see peters dad actually having his moment to experience something spooky and hes looking at annie during the cup scene when peter and annie are looking at the cup

The family was controlled the whole time. They talk about it in the class room scene as a metaphor.
The cult was also in the house the whole time. There's a part early on where you can hear the cult in the attic. When the mother went out side to find Charlie before the night of her death you can see large foot prints in the dirt as Charlie walks down the path and sees someone in white surrounded by fire.

My friend, early on in our relationship, admitted to me that she was psychic and I almost told her to get out of my house. She didn’t consider it a gift; said “If they’d tell me the lotto numbers, it’s a gift. Seeing this shit? No.” She didn’t do it professionally. I still rolled my eyes, so she told me to hand her something and she’d read it. So I handed her a rock off my book shelf. She told me who gave it to me, what beach he found it at, then how he died in a motorcycle crash but his fiancée lived. Completely freaked me out and I told her to leave. Once the fear calmed down though, I was fascinated. I’ve gone with her and a detective to crime scenes and she friggin solved them. She read my ex, a biochemistry professor, and freaked him out as well. She’s very skeptical of most mediums she’s met, though. Told me she’s only met a few over the course of decades who she thinks were real.

You boys need to react to the entire Nightmare on Elm Street movies. And I do mean all of them. The first one i saw was Freddy's Dead the final nightmare with my buddy at his home when I was a kid. I was so terrified that night I actually slept in his parents bedroom lol.

I don’t think Charlie is having a good time. I think the demon has simple been influencing her and stunting her development. I really do think that Charlie was the one in her mom’s body and she was screaming for help this was her having a good time🥺

Maybe she had a sense or instinct or feeling that her mom wanted her to have a son or daughter to put her hooks into especially if its son that's Why she did the paint thinner or trying to make herself lose the baby cause like she said she was trying yo save him trying to spare them from this dark fate like the mom in paranormal activity three wanted daughter to have a son slash hunter lol

It's a bit amusing. I actually got some high-school vibes here. One guy jokes to break the tension and everyone laughs thankful for the relief. (And you skipped the deepest hooror scenes)

Its all real! Its all bloody real! Now push the dam button lol! Did you catch the mom up in the corner when son woke up and wad sitting on his bed lol. She up in corner for bit then crawl across wall behind him lol. This is crazy lol. The symbol they kept showing with the demon showed him carrying three heads which ended up being Charlie the mom and grandmom. What about dads head? Lol. That was part of bringing him into world like sacrifices before he can go into true body lol

If someone present has seen the film (especially a film like this, especially multiple times), they should not assist the others in understanding it or with "clues." It becomes a non-genuine experience then, and weakens the reactions.
There was a LOT of leading going on here. Too good a film for that.
