  • The biggest and most controversial video on my channel. A criticism of the Ayush Ministry. Here I present my case for why it’s a waste of public tax money. And on top of that it’s laughable adherence to safety and regulation harms a lot of people. Indian laws are also to blame.

The term 'alternative' medicine and homeopathy ( discipline)was actually created in the US. Also half of America does not 'believe' in climate change . 'Supplements' are not regulated by the FDA and not to mention fads like 'natural' and 'organic'.
In short, most of the problematic attitudes we have in India today regarding medicine are also prevalent in the united states and these ideas ( good or otherwise) are being exchanged.

Thank you for inviting me to contribute a small part to this huge, impressive piece of work. I learnt quite a lot I hadn’t heard before, about the scale of the problem. Attaching quackery to legitimate medical establishments is right out of the famous Cleveland Clinic playbook, but it does untold damage. The jingoistic nonsense and profligate wasting of money on this nonsense is particularly sad when you consider how much Indian medical science has contributed. It could’ve continued on its previous path to being a real powerhouse, and developed more original research. People like Asima Chatterjee who discovered vinca alkyloids (vincristine - chemotherapy) using Ayurvedic therapies. Or Upendranath Brahmachari who prevented millions of deaths from kala-azar. Subash Mukhopadhyay who created the world’s second test tube baby, just weeks after the first (in the UK). There are so many brilliant scientists that currently decide to leave for the US or Europe.

      Let me show you something:
      ". Ayurveda associated Pharmacology:
      Sections:
      i. Ayurveda in drugs
      ii. Ayurveda inspired drugs
      i. Ayurveda in drugs:
Some drugs that are isolated or created using Ayurvedic plants:
      1. Bosentan: Bosentan, used in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, is derived from the plant Trachyspermum ammi (Ajwain). Ajwain has been traditionally used in Ayurveda for its medicinal properties, including respiratory support.
      2. Rosiglitazone: Rosiglitazone, an oral antidiabetic medication used for the management of type 2 diabetes, is synthesized based on the chemical structure of compounds found in the herb Pterocarpus marsupium (Vijayasar). Vijayasar has been used in Ayurveda for its potential hypoglycemic effects.
      3. Etoricoxib: Etoricoxib, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for the management of pain and inflammation in conditions such as arthritis, is structurally derived from compounds found in the herb Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha). Ashwagandha has been traditionally used in Ayurveda for its anti-inflammatory properties.
      4. Saxagliptin: Saxagliptin, an oral antidiabetic medication used for the management of type 2 diabetes, is developed based on the structural features of compounds found in the herb Gymnema sylvestre (Gurmar). Gurmar has been traditionally used in Ayurveda for its potential in managing diabetes.
      5. Solifenacin: Solifenacin, used in the treatment of overactive bladder, is developed based on compounds found in the herb Dryopteris filix-mas (Male Fern). Male Fern has been used in Ayurveda for its potential diuretic and antispasmodic properties.
      6. Rivastigmine: Rivastigmine, used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, is a derivative of compounds found in the herb Acorus calamus (Sweet Flag). Sweet Flag has been traditionally used in Ayurveda for cognitive support.
      7. Artesunate: Artesunate is a derivative of artemisinin, which is derived from the plant Artemisia annua. It is a key component in the treatment of malaria and has been effective in combating drug-resistant strains of the disease.
      8. Forskolin: Forskolin is isolated from the roots of the plant Coleus forskohlii. It has been used in the treatment of various conditions, including asthma, cardiovascular disorders, and obesity.
      9. Galantamine: Galantamine is derived from the Galanthus spp., particularly Galanthus nivalis and Galanthus woronowii. It is used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive disorders.
      10. Vinblastine and Vincristine: These anticancer drugs are derived from the plant Catharanthus roseus, also known as Madagascar periwinkle. They have been used in the treatment of various types of cancer, including Hodgkin's lymphoma, leukemia, and breast cancer.
      11. Quinine: Quinine is derived from the bark of the Cinchona tree, particularly Cinchona officinalis. It has been traditionally used for treating malaria and is still used today in some cases of drug-resistant malaria.
      12. Reserpine: Reserpine is derived from the roots of Rauwolfia serpentina, a plant traditionally used in Ayurveda for its antihypertensive properties. Reserpine has been used as an antihypertensive medication.
      13. Podophyllotoxin and Etoposide: These drugs are derived from the roots and rhizomes of Podophyllum plants, such as Podophyllum peltatum. They have been used in the treatment of various cancers, including testicular, lung, and ovarian cancers.
      14. Paclitaxel (Taxol): Paclitaxel is derived from the bark of the Pacific yew tree, Taxus brevifolia. It is an important chemotherapy drug used for various types of cancer, including breast, ovarian, and lung cancers.
      15. Camptothecin and Irinotecan: These drugs are derived from the bark and stem of the tree Camptotheca acuminata. They have been used in the treatment of colorectal, ovarian, and lung cancers.
      16. Guggulsterones: Guggulsterones are isolated from the resin of the Commiphora mukul tree, commonly known as Guggul. They have been used for their lipid-lowering and anti-inflammatory properties.
      ii. Ayurveda inspired drugs:
While Ayurveda has influenced various aspects of modern medicine, including the development of certain drugs, direct translations or exact equivalents of Ayurvedic formulations into modern medicine may not always exist. Here are some examples of drugs that have been inspired by or have a connection to Ayurvedic principles and concepts.
      1. Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic acid): While not directly derived from Ayurveda, aspirin is inspired by the use of willow bark in traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda. Willow bark contains salicin, which has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Aspirin, a synthetic derivative of salicin, is widely used as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antiplatelet drug.
      2. Digoxin: Derived from the foxglove plant (Digitalis purpurea), digoxin has cardiac glycoside properties. It has been used in modern medicine to treat heart failure and certain cardiac arrhythmias. The concept of using plants with cardiac effects has similarities to the Ayurvedic concept of strengthening the heart (Hridya Rasayana).
      3. Artemisinin: Derived from the Artemisia annua plant, artemisinin is a key component in the treatment of malaria. The use of Artemisia species for treating fevers, including malaria-like symptoms, has roots in traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda.
      4. Paclitaxel: Derived from the Pacific yew tree (Taxus brevifolia), paclitaxel is a chemotherapy drug used in the treatment of various cancers. The concept of using plant-based medicines for their anticancer properties can be seen in Ayurveda, where various herbs and plant extracts are used in cancer management.
      5. Metformin: While not directly related to Ayurveda, metformin has similarities to the Ayurvedic concept of "Guduchi" or Tinospora cordifolia, which has been traditionally used for managing diabetes. Metformin is a widely used first-line drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
      6. Rauwolfia alkaloids: Derived from the Rauwolfia serpentina plant, these alkaloids, including reserpine, have been used as antihypertensive agents. The plant has a history of use in Ayurveda, and its traditional applications for conditions like hypertension are reflected in modern medicine.
      7. Colchicine: While not directly linked to Ayurveda, colchicine has similarities to the Ayurvedic concept of "Suranjan" or Colchicum autumnale, which has been traditionally used for managing gout. Colchicine is used in modern medicine for the treatment of acute gout attacks.”

I know someone, whose story is quite harrowing. I'll not say her name to protect her privacy. She was born with a genetic illness, that was progressing with age. It got serious and she started losing hearing in one ear. Her parents took her to several doctors, to no avail. And then, they took her to an Ayurvedic retreat. She, like the people mentioned in the video, ended up with a poisoned liver. Her illness progressed even further after this and she was on the brink of dying. It was ultimately what ayurveda fanatics call "Western Medicine" that is keeping her alive.
She's lost hearing totally in both ears now, has been so for a few years. It got very bad during covid that she couldn't even expose herself to the air, and generally lives life with some level of quarantine protocols.
    Much needed video, this.

I've many family members in the medical and health care industry, most of them working in government hospitals. I have been hearing such stories since my childhood. When the patient is too sick and close to losing their lives, the relatives bring to some hospital as a last resort. Then the doctors have very little window to do much. Many times limbs are on the verge of being amputated to save the life, or the liver or kidney has been damaged to the point of death or disability. It's scary that people still believe that ayurveda/homeo/naturopathy/ayush stuff are these harmless little practice with no side effects or issues. Our government should not be endorsing this stuff.

In reality, nothing happens in those one week. The interns just visits any AYUSH unit nearby to the medical college and takes 1 week break from the hectic 1 year schedule.

It's worth noting that alternative medicine is also seen as a financially affordable option by many of its consumers, who more often than not, come from lower middle class and poor households. It is extremely troubling and inexcusable that they are dealt such toxic substances under the guise of medicine, while modern medicine is reserved for the wealthier class. 4000 crores every year can be utilised to make modern medicine affordable to the economically weaker sections of the society instead of subjecting them to such fraudulent, low-effort alternatives.

But going out of the way saying it can cure cancer, aids etc are just pathetic and are harmful. Like baba ramdev claiming his coronil medicine will cure COVID with a recovery rate of 100%. The health minister or medical council of India didn't say anything allowed the misinformation to spread. Becoz of very large media coverage and controversy did the medical council concluded it as a false claim. There is a clear line between being proud with what we have vs simple lying and promoting misinformation.

He refuses to treat patients who need meds based on germ theory (HIV/AIDS, cholera, dengue). Asks cancer patients to strictly follow modern meds and might throw in an "immunity booster" for the placebo effect. He feels, his role is more about "mental health boost", "Operation prevention" and "post-op healthcare".

@Science is Dope: Pranav, this is by far the most detailed video you have made and while it had repetitions from other videos(I watch all your videos), I could imagine the time and pain it took you to throw light on not only pointing out the real issue, but also address those who took alternative medicine as a profession.
I would not have even given a rats ass about it and I believe most other content creators would not. This not only shows how well thought and researched your videos are but also how responsibly you are making content not only for your subscribers but also people who come to show hatred.
Keep up this great work. I was actually waiting for such a collab between you, the liverdoc and medlifecrisis. I've started following midlife crisis since the inception of covid and I follow Dr Abby and your content on Twitter.
I did not even feel a bit bored whole going through this entire video. I know you will receive a lot of hate for this. It just proves you are on the right track.

Every year 7 lakh people die in US of IHD and Stroke there's no Ayurveda or Homoeopathy ,same number die in many countries in Europe Asia . There are no availability of treatment for 60% in modern medicine or any other medicine. So blaming others is joke , maximum big hospitals u see are allopathic medicine where maximum people die daily like AIIMS . He says medicine damage liver, then why allopathic medicine give leaflet with there own medicine mentioned Hepatotoxic ( liver damaging)Nephrotoxic Neurotoxic etc

As a medical professionals it my advice to people to learn about efficiency rate of medicines and why and how they are effective. Ayurvedic medicines often don't have efficiency rates and therefore none recommends for diagnosis.

Mine is a minor problem on the scale of this stupidity of epic proportions, but the number of days I've had to miss school, the number of extra days where I've had to endure a fever just because my parents took me to a homeopathic dr just grinds my gears. One time I ate a whole bottle of homeopathic medicine and my father beat me up really badly, and i was really scared of something adverse happening to me, then he took me to the dr again to get a refill of that medicine.😢

Hi Pranav, I hope my message finds you well. I am following you since your first video and I am writing this to sincerely thank you for all work you are doing in debunking pseudoscience, promoting critical thinking, increasing scientific literacy amongst youth. I got introduced to Dr Abby Sir and Vimoh (amazing people) through your videos and as someone who identifies as rationalist and science lover, I was delighted to find some creators who actually made thought provoking relatable content by addressing questions in respectful and intellectual manner.
Wishing you continued success and bigger milestones. Thank you

How and why does a placebo work? I've always wondered about that. Is that still a mystery or are there any theories or studies on this?
