I did it yesterday. Easy, peasy! Do what Jeff did, and you'll be fine! I didn't have one of those huge wrenches, but still managed to get everything snug and leak-free. Save your money!
What truly separates this video from so many other tutorial videos, is your attention to the small details that would trip someone up when doing this project. The nut on the drain with the dishwasher tube is a great example. People would have been unsure of what to do if you had not taken the time to explain that the plastic one replaces the metal one and that's okay. First time seeing one of your videos, but I'm subscribing and seeing what else you demonstrate. Thank you!

Jeff, Very clear explanation with good close up videos. This will help a lot of weekend warriors solve their issues. That big strainer nut wrench is awesome. I have always gotten by with my 16 inch Channelock pliers. But next time I see one on sale or at a yard sale I will snarf it up. The comment about the pipe joint comment on the threads helps with metal nuts and tailpieces, and especially with threaded tailpieces that go onto bathroom drains where the tailpiece threads into the popup assembly. On the others, the pipe compound is lubrication making assembly easier. If you go to plumbing supply houses to buy your sink strainer you can get them with real brass nuts instead of the pot metal cast nuts. The brass nuts hold up much better over time especially if something loosens up and there is a small leak that causes corrosion. One other point, do not overtighten plastic drain nuts. If they don't seal when firmly hand tightened, replace the washers and check the alignment of the parts. Keep the great information coming!

I spent too much time worrying about a sink drain wrench, when I should have paid more attention to the pvc pipes instead. Probably could have saved some money, used fewer pipes and less labor. Buy plenty of pipe and fittings- you can always take back what you dont need, which is less frustrating than not having what you need up front. I ended out making 3 cuts on different pipes with regular hand saw. Its all together now, and I'm much more knowledgable- thanks Jeff!

Excellent instruction! Thank you, Jeff this will make the task go quickly. I would like to add one of my own tips, to save your back. Before you start, use a moving blanket or something similar as a platform to lie on. You could also use seat cushions, pillows, etc. The idea is to make them level with the bottom of the cabinet floor so you are lying down flat and not arching your back excessively.

@@jeffostroff Yes that would be a great idea. I installed a double sink last night. A few days ago, I fixed the drains to the sink and made 2 piles of boxes. One to throw away and the other to keep instruction manuals and 1 of any duplicate boxes I had just in case I missed something. Well last night i took the drain apart and looked at the washer assuming it might be paper there to prevent the rubber from scratching or getting damaged, a protective layer. Right when I thought about tossing it, I looked for instructions & realized I threw both boxes away with the wrong pile. Something said look on RUclips before I toss it. If I would have thrown them in the trash for my double sink I would have had double trouble. Your attention to detail is great. For this to be 10 years ago reminded me of what I say about not counting out informational things just because it's got some years on it. Sometimes integrity gets lost with modern info. Really have to weed through & thats what I did. I came across a couple videos from this year and a few years back and they don't even come close to the way you broke this down. When i got to your video I watched it twice and shared it with someone. Very neat, very clean, very detailed. Again, thank you SO much. My sink looks amazing! I won't attempt to throw away small paper again before reading what it's for first lol. Have a happy new year!

Thank you much, this is the 3rd video on this I have watched today. Yours is the ONLY one showing how to do it correctly. Others put that washer on top above the sink, and some used glued pipe instead of slip joints.
Great attention to detail. I didn't know that there was a special plumbers putty for corain, granite, marble, etc.. sinks. Also, the special sink wrench used to tighten evenly will help. Now I am going to try to fix this friggin' drain for the third time! Thanks dude! God bless you!
I installed a new drain in kitchen, but the friction washer go wet, and disintegrated. Had lots of problems with washer moving sideways, and also drain moving. I was stuck using an adjustable spanner wrench that constantly slipped off drain nut. Very difficult to get the thing much more than hand tight. I did manage to get it tight, and not currently leaking. Thanks for the video. I am heading to lowes tomorrow to get the wrench you used, and probably will wind up buying a new drain with new friction washer, and gasket, and do the job again the correct way. Thanks to you, I now know the right way, and will hopefully have no leaks for a long time to come.
This was extremely helpful. Especially the part about finding the threads by going counterclockwise till it clicks. Man… that’s seriously gold. There was a leak under the sink at the house we just moved into, I saw that whoever installed it didn’t remove the excess putty from underneath. It definitely caused problems.
Yes and as it turns out we really don't need to use the putty down there because it is the Teflon tape that actually solves the problem period so once you do that you can experiment with not putting the putty under there and I bet you won't have a leak.

This tutorial was very helpful. I’m going to replace the drains and plumbing under my kitchen sink. You have answered most questions I’ve had and I feel pretty good about this DIY project.
Good video and very informative. The only suggestion I have would be add pipe dope to both sets of threads on the basket strainer to help seal joints. There are also specialty wrenches for inside basket strainer to keep them from turning while you tighten the larger bottom nut, but I typically just put two screw drivers down through the top, in different holes, and turn them clockwise while I tighten the large nut with a large pair of pliers.
Good idea! Although, I usually don't recommend adding pipe dope unless you have a leak, these usually don't leak if you install them correctly. Also remember that pipe dope only gets applied to the male threaded part, not the female parts.
Im doing this job tomorrow for the 4th time never done any plumbing before this sink as a matter of fact had to be clued in on plumbers putty and every time ive done exactly like you did minus the tool and 1 other piece that hasn't been shown in any other videos and ive watched @6 or 7 before I attempted it my 1st time just in case I could have another way if for whatever reason I couldn't do as they did in video and the 2nd time same sink as before i watched a few more for the tutorial since i messed up my 1st time but apparently I didn't figure it out the 2nd time either then the 3rd time no video was needed but I had to do a quickie for the 3rd one and didn't care much about it since i already got it wrong the first 2x just fake it til u make it 😅 or find a professional and here u are thank you. Your video is the only 1 that said and/or said anything about the friction piece so until now never knew what i was doing wrong but how would I know if I never seen it before had no idea i was missing a very integral role player and that i was missing parts im 100 percent this time will be the last time i have to fake this part of the job. Thanks for not leaving that friction piece out i would never had known what i was doing wrong even though I did exactly what I saw in every video aside from yours totally awesome

Thank you for this video. I recently had a new stainless steel sink installed. The drains on both sides leaked, so I watched this video and decided to redo them myself. Not only had the installer not scraped off the excess putty underneath before threading the nut on, but he had also not used the friction washer. After I reinstalled them the proper way, neither side leaks. Just goes to show if you want something done right, do it yourself.
Great explanation on how to do this correctly. It was missing a step on myself by not cleaning the plumbers putty off the bottom first before putting up the nut which was giving me problems everything shifting so appreciate the info.
I changed the drain last year in the kitchen but reused the copper pipes with compression fittings. I used plumbers putty under the top flange of the drain. Great. Video Jeff.
Every time I tighten the drainpipe with the high hat washer in place it, the plastic nut "skips" & loosens. I have tried several times to line up the plastic nut onto the threads exactly & the plastic nut keeps skipping & loosens. BUT when I remove the high hat washer, the nut tightens well. Any reason why this connection leaks with the high hat in place?? I only tighten by hand as much as I can.

Thank you, Jeff. Question: after installing a dishwasher in my dual sink configuration...I experiencing drain backups. Does a dishwasher install require an air gap 'thing' to keep the system flowing?
The other sink should not back up. Did you watch our dishwasher install video from last year? we show you how to do the high side loop for the dishwasher hose? Also you might have a sewer clog somewhere down the line, we just cleaned out our kitchen sewer line last year, as it clogged a bit causing water to back into the 2nd sink. Often requires $150 visit from plumber to clear it out.

If you go to plumbing supply houses to buy your sink strainer you can get them with real brass nuts instead of the pot metal cast nuts. The brass nuts hold up much better over time especially if something loosens up and there is a small leak that causes corrosion.
One other point, do not overtighten plastic drain nuts. If they don't seal when firmly hand tightened, replace the washers and check the alignment of the parts.

I spent too much time worrying about a sink drain wrench, when I should have paid more attention to the pvc pipes instead. Probably could have saved some money, used fewer pipes and less labor. Buy plenty of pipe and fittings- you can always take back what you dont need, which is less frustrating than not having what you need up front. I ended out making 3 cuts on different pipes with regular hand saw. Its all together now, and I'm much more knowledgable- thanks Jeff!

Excellent instruction! Thank you, Jeff this will make the task go quickly. I would like to add one of my own tips, to save your back. Before you start, use a moving blanket or something similar as a platform to lie on. You could also use seat cushions, pillows, etc. The idea is to make them level with the bottom of the cabinet floor so you are lying down flat and not arching your back excessively.

@@jeffostroff Yes that would be a great idea. I installed a double sink last night. A few days ago, I fixed the drains to the sink and made 2 piles of boxes. One to throw away and the other to keep instruction manuals and 1 of any duplicate boxes I had just in case I missed something. Well last night i took the drain apart and looked at the washer assuming it might be paper there to prevent the rubber from scratching or getting damaged, a protective layer. Right when I thought about tossing it, I looked for instructions & realized I threw both boxes away with the wrong pile. Something said look on RUclips before I toss it. If I would have thrown them in the trash for my double sink I would have had double trouble. Your attention to detail is great. For this to be 10 years ago reminded me of what I say about not counting out informational things just because it's got some years on it. Sometimes integrity gets lost with modern info. Really have to weed through & thats what I did. I came across a couple videos from this year and a few years back and they don't even come close to the way you broke this down. When i got to your video I watched it twice and shared it with someone. Very neat, very clean, very detailed. Again, thank you SO much. My sink looks amazing! I won't attempt to throw away small paper again before reading what it's for first lol. Have a happy new year!

Thank you much, this is the 3rd video on this I have watched today. Yours is the ONLY one showing how to do it correctly. Others put that washer on top above the sink, and some used glued pipe instead of slip joints.
Great attention to detail. I didn't know that there was a special plumbers putty for corain, granite, marble, etc.. sinks. Also, the special sink wrench used to tighten evenly will help. Now I am going to try to fix this friggin' drain for the third time! Thanks dude! God bless you!
I installed a new drain in kitchen, but the friction washer go wet, and disintegrated. Had lots of problems with washer moving sideways, and also drain moving. I was stuck using an adjustable spanner wrench that constantly slipped off drain nut. Very difficult to get the thing much more than hand tight. I did manage to get it tight, and not currently leaking. Thanks for the video. I am heading to lowes tomorrow to get the wrench you used, and probably will wind up buying a new drain with new friction washer, and gasket, and do the job again the correct way. Thanks to you, I now know the right way, and will hopefully have no leaks for a long time to come.

This was extremely helpful. Especially the part about finding the threads by going counterclockwise till it clicks. Man… that’s seriously gold. There was a leak under the sink at the house we just moved into, I saw that whoever installed it didn’t remove the excess putty from underneath. It definitely caused problems.
Yes and as it turns out we really don't need to use the putty down there because it is the Teflon tape that actually solves the problem period so once you do that you can experiment with not putting the putty under there and I bet you won't have a leak.

Good video and very informative. The only suggestion I have would be add pipe dope to both sets of threads on the basket strainer to help seal joints. There are also specialty wrenches for inside basket strainer to keep them from turning while you tighten the larger bottom nut, but I typically just put two screw drivers down through the top, in different holes, and turn them clockwise while I tighten the large nut with a large pair of pliers.
Good idea! Although, I usually don't recommend adding pipe dope unless you have a leak, these usually don't leak if you install them correctly. Also remember that pipe dope only gets applied to the male threaded part, not the female parts.

Im doing this job tomorrow for the 4th time never done any plumbing before this sink as a matter of fact had to be clued in on plumbers putty and every time ive done exactly like you did minus the tool and 1 other piece that hasn't been shown in any other videos and ive watched @6 or 7 before I attempted it my 1st time just in case I could have another way if for whatever reason I couldn't do as they did in video and the 2nd time same sink as before i watched a few more for the tutorial since i messed up my 1st time but apparently I didn't figure it out the 2nd time either then the 3rd time no video was needed but I had to do a quickie for the 3rd one and didn't care much about it since i already got it wrong the first 2x just fake it til u make it 😅 or find a professional and here u are thank you. Your video is the only 1 that said and/or said anything about the friction piece so until now never knew what i was doing wrong but how would I know if I never seen it before had no idea i was missing a very integral role player and that i was missing parts im 100 percent this time will be the last time i have to fake this part of the job. Thanks for not leaving that friction piece out i would never had known what i was doing wrong even though I did exactly what I saw in every video aside from yours totally awesome

Thank you for this video. I recently had a new stainless steel sink installed. The drains on both sides leaked, so I watched this video and decided to redo them myself. Not only had the installer not scraped off the excess putty underneath before threading the nut on, but he had also not used the friction washer. After I reinstalled them the proper way, neither side leaks. Just goes to show if you want something done right, do it yourself.

Great explanation on how to do this correctly. It was missing a step on myself by not cleaning the plumbers putty off the bottom first before putting up the nut which was giving me problems everything shifting so appreciate the info.

I changed the drain last year in the kitchen but reused the copper pipes with compression fittings. I used plumbers putty under the top flange of the drain. Great. Video Jeff.

Every time I tighten the drainpipe with the high hat washer in place it, the plastic nut "skips" & loosens. I have tried several times to line up the plastic nut onto the threads exactly & the plastic nut keeps skipping & loosens. BUT when I remove the high hat washer, the nut tightens well. Any reason why this connection leaks with the high hat in place?? I only tighten by hand as much as I can.

Question: after installing a dishwasher in my dual sink configuration...I experiencing drain backups. Does a dishwasher install require an air gap 'thing' to keep the system flowing?
The other sink should not back up. Did you watch our dishwasher install video from last year? we show you how to do the high side loop for the dishwasher hose? Also you might have a sewer clog somewhere down the line, we just cleaned out our kitchen sewer line last year, as it clogged a bit causing water to back into the 2nd sink. Often requires $150 visit from plumber to clear it out.
