Sadly Joey had a rare degenerative neurological condition that hit him so bad he lost control of his legs. He literally could not drum anymore and the band was forced to replace him. Joey eventually recovered enough to move on with other bands. Jay was a slipknot fan since he was a child and he idolized Joey. It was very poetic that he got to be in his favorite band. He has nothing but love and respect for Joey.

    • @joeg8200

He didn't know he had it for a bit too. He dealt with the pain in ways that caused other problems in the band which also lead to him being replaced. As far as his other bands go, he primarily played guitar because the condition was far worse after he was finally diagnosed. Luckily, he and the rest of Slipknot were able to mend their friendships back together and were brothers once again before his passing. At least that was able to happen.

One of my favourite things i've ever seen Jay do, is during a performance of All Out Life, he drops his left stick whilst playing, continues playing just with his right keeping the beat on both cymbals and snare for a bar or two whilst getting a new stick with his left, and he doesn't miss a single beat! I'm sure it's something most drummers can do, but seeing Jay headbang, play, keep time and reach for a new stick all at once made me appreciate him just that little bit more!

Joey was fired shortly before Slipknot’s 2014 album .5 The Gray Chapter. When their bassist Paul Gray died the band agreed anyone who couldn’t get clean of drugs would be fired, Joey developed a nervous system condition that left him in poor health, he would have to be carried to and from his kit during their shows. At the time, the condition hadn’t been diagnosed, Joey didn’t know why he was in that shape and the band thought he was back on drugs.
Slipknot fans seem to have taken Jay in well. He plays Joey’s songs perfectly and his own style he brought to the band is refreshing. Unsainted is one of Jay Weinberg’s songs.

Unsaited is indeed from their 2019 album with Jay recording. Joey was sadly let go after his session after “All hope is gone” album. Reason why is somewhat of a mystery to some. When rumors started popping out, Joey did many interviews that he wasn’t leaving the band, but sadly those rumors were true.
Joey unfortunately had an acute case of Transverse myelitis (TM); which is a rare neurological condition in which his spinal cord is inflamed. It caused him to loose the ability to use his legs properly.
You should maybe see the speech he gave in the 2016 metal hammer gods awards. It is honestly the most passionate, yet saddest moment in his life. In our lives as a fan, think he would beat this… 😢

Joey was exceptional, no doubt . . . But I do think Slipknot actually found one of only a handful of drummers who could match Joeys raw talent whilst bringing their own creativity to the newer songs, putting their own stamp on it. This song is from 'We are not your kind' which is the latest Slipknot album to date and Jay's own work.
I would juxtapose this with Lamb of God.
Art Cruz is undeniably a very talented drummer and he can play Chris' parts very, very well. But the stuff he's written with the band? Personally I don't think it has the same flare and creativity that Chris did when he was writing with them.

Jay brought his own style to Slipknot while maintaining the changing directions of the band. Jay is a fantastic drummer and he continues to pay homage to Joey by playing the early greats as if Joey was playing himself. The entire meaning of the masks is to focus on the music, atmosphere, and feeling instead of the person. Jay continues that.

  • @scottking7082

The story of how Jay became the drummer will give you some insight. Jay was a fan of Slipknot before he even knew he was auditioning.
I don't think there isn't any hate between Jay vs Joey. The actions Slipknot has done since Joey's passing make me feel that what happened was in the best interest of the band, and for whatever reason, Joey had to go. Jay didn't cause any of that. The general public doesn't know the whole story of what happened with Joey, and I don't know if we ever will.
Unsainted is from their latest album, We Are Not Your Kind.
As for style, there is a lot of overlap between the two. Since Jay knew all or most of the parts before joining, that served as the foundation for creating new music. If anything, I think Jay will branch out a little bit more on the rhythm differences such as adding in the 3/2 beats on the cymbals in Unsainted, where I'm struggling to recall Joey doing something of that nature. I also think Joey wanted the drums to drive the music more, not wanting to be in the spotlight, but more of just always having all four limbs be doing something. Jay seems to be willing to sit back and allow for lighter drum parts at times. These are differences around the edges, not fundamental distinctions between the drummers.
As for sound, Jay's set does seem to sound lighter in this, but I think it started when Jay joined the group. The Devil in I was one of the first songs released with Jay in the band, and it sounds different from Joey's.

This goes outside of drumming but as a fairly old fan and collector of the band I couldn't have thought of a better PERSON to replace Joey. Jay is super humble and kind to the fans and lives and breaths his craft in art. (he's a very talented oil painter and everything visual in addition to his music career) he's been a fan of Slipknot since he was a kid and Joey is his hero. Overall just a very cool, polite and down-to-earth guy who gives tons of energy and excitement to the band! No one can ever really truly replace Joey but I think Jay is the best possible person to honor his legacy and also give his own twist to modern Slipknot. (I had the honour to see Joey playing live three times, I've seen Jay four times so far and I think he is one of the best, if not THE best, part of their live show right now)

Jay has said that his custom snare from SJC is so loud that, the first time he hit it, he scared the shit out of himself. The tone difference is a 13x6.5 metal snare (Joey) vs. and a 14x6.5 48-ply would snare. Cymbal tone, aside from brand, also might have to do with stick size. Joey used a Promark 5A stick, and Jay’s Vater signature is slightly bigger than a Vater 9A.

Well Joey became paralysed and beat it. He always thought they would bring him back they even lead him on about at one point. Joey founded Slipknot so when only ONE of the band members visited when he was hospitalized and found out he was kicked out through the media and an email... Just awful. There's alot of pain here and bad blood here about how this broke apart. Joey saw a headline saying he left Slipknot and he couldn't believe what he was seeing.. imagine being booted without even a visit to the hospital from anyone but one of them after he gave them this band. He was the heart. He was number 1. You don't treat people like that. I only saw Slipknot with Joey.. at least a dozen times... Joey was self taught. I feel bad for Jay... He can't fill those shoes. He just can't. This IS my favorite band. Always has been since I was 10... I can't say it enough Joey created entire songs like lyrics and all... So I love them to the end but I won't see them without Joey. Not after what they did to him... He beat paralysis and then came back and played with vimic sinsaenim scar the martyr etc. How I feel is: I'm pissed. Jay is fine but he is not Joey.. I'm upset about the members who kicked Joey out not Jay.

Anyone who was chosen to take the throne was going to be polarizing for fans because, well, it’s Joey friggin’ Jordison and he’s simply irreplaceable. Who on earth could possibly stack up? There are few names that would come close, but I’ve really, really enjoyed Jay’s contributions to the band. To my ear, Jay’s original writing for post-2014 tracks combine his own style with both subtle and overt nods to Joey - that is, he’s not trying to emulate Joey; rather he’s paying homage with those touches throughout his writing that remind you that you’re listening to Slipknot. Tough to ask for much more from someone tasked with picking up the massive torch Joey carried. Whether Jay was the right choice or not can and will be debated forever, but I’ll speak for myself as a longtime fan - it’s all love and respect from me for Joey AND Jay. If I catch hell for it, so be it. Thanks for another great Slipknot reaction!

I got back into listening SlipKnot after Weinberg joined the band, as it came back into my consciousness. I started to listen to old stuff and new stuff and you can clearly hear out the different styles from Jordison and Weinberg. Jordison was a speedmachine. He was pretty fast and endurant at that. Weinberg tends to get somewhat sloppy on the doublebass parts but excels at complex fills and rythms. The part in unsainted, where he leads with the lefthand on the snare and puts accents on the china with the right hand is unthinkable for Joey. The otherway around: The insane blast beats and studidly fast double bass patterns from older songs like heretic anthem or people=shit are clearly not the style of Jay. They are obviously different drummers, each with their own style. SlipKnot changed with their drummer, but I like the change and it doesnt make the old albums undone and I can enjoy both of them.
