  • Sjoukje had trained for years in London at the famed Richmond rink under Arnold Gerschwiler. An incredibly powerful skater she had a massive double axel and in this, her Olympic winning performance, also landed the double lutz which was such a problem throughout her career. Note at the end after curtseying to teh audience she skates towards teh barrier to curtsey to the memnberos of the Dutch Royal Family who were in attendance. Having been completely dominant on the world level since 1961, she could not have skated any better. Now here it can be seen for the first time in it's entirety!

Thank you so much for posting this. My mom (Sjoukje) was so happy to see this for the first time completely with music and in full version!

I was very happy too. I had three idols in the 1960s: the Everly Brothers and Sjoukje Dijkstra. In my dreams I (as a boy) skated as fantastic and jumped as high as she did. I remember very well how nervous I was the day before she performed her winning kür in 1964. I still could remember the music of her performance and now I hear it again on youtube after 56 years!

Please wish your Mother a very happy 80th Birthday from London! Sadly the Richmond rink is long gone, replaced by a supermarket in the 1990s. But I'm so happy Sjoukje & Joan are both still great friends and helping young Dutch skaters. Good Luck to Lindsay in Beijing. My friend in Amsterdam told me about the radio interview Sjoukje did and I never knew Courtney Jones designed and made her costumes! I wish I could see the Olympic dress in colour with the mint green. All the best! 🥰💐🧡

Despite the high level of technical ability of ladies skating currently, I am bored by many programs. It is so refreshing to watch a beautifully skated program to lovely music that flows. Moves like the Russian split into a salchow and double-single-single combinations are still wonderful. What a treat!

It is a pity, that the comment of her successor Peggy Fleming (gold at the Olympics of 1968) on all the European skaters in 1964 was not very nice. In ‘Reflections on Ice Part 7 - Peggy & Dorothy’ she says: ‘I didn’t like how the others were skating. Sjoukje Dijkstra won in 1964. And she was such a masculair skater, and really a big woman, very strong, she could do the jumps, but she was not graceful. I don’t like that at all.’

@@kossejonker1238 hmmm ... thank you for the link. We all have our personal opinions, some are more tactful when expressing them, others are less, or not at all, concerned with how their statements are received. Miss Flemming's opinion does not change my opinion at all ... was a great skate and a charming program. 🙂

Peggy was simply built differently as was Janet Lynn. Trixie Schuba was heavily criticized for her build. It’s silly. They were all great champions in different ways. The scoring systems changed and thereafter the type of skaters changed. A variation of this happens in most sports.

Thanks for sharing this gem with us! I always wondered how this performance went. It looks like she surprised herself with that double lutz - she landed it as if she didn't even expect she would! Great double axel and axel-double loop combination.

The jury was very right at the Olympics in Innsbruck by giving Sjoukje Dijkstra very high notes for both the technical merit (on the 6.0 scale): 5.7, 2x5.8 and 6x5.9, and on her artistic impression: 5x5.8 and 4x5.9.

@@waynehentley4332 You surely will remember the American skater Tonya Hardin. Her athletic ability made her a very great jumper, even better than Sjoukje Dijkstra. She was the first woman to perform two triple axels in a program, and a triple axel combination with a double toe loop (1990-1992). But I think, Sjoukje was more graceful. Hardin never went gold on a World Championship or on a Winter Olympics.

Sjoukje Dijkstra, who had been silver medalist behind Carol Heiss at the Olympics in 1960, easily won the free skate in 1964.
Sjoukje had already been favored in 1961 for the World Champioenship in 1961 prior to the plane crash that took the lives of the entire US figure skating team travelling to the World Championships. Sjoukje won the World Championships in 1962-64. She was European Champion from 1960-64. She won the gold medal in 1964. The silver medal went to Regine Heitzer (Austria), the bronze medal to Petra Burka (Canada).

Huge jumps, impressive footwork, and very fast. Also uses her music pretty well, but she is about as graceful as a bull. I guess when you are that powerful and strong you don't need much grace though. Peggy summed her up well, basically saying it was strong, powerful, but butch skating.
