Wow I just pulled up my Psone memory card...I spent exactly 362 hours playing this game. I maxed out every character and gear. Billy can literally killed gears solo and I have all the secret engine upgrades from the lighthouse side quests. Oh to be a kid again. Thanks for the memories!
Poorly advertised on the birth of FF8 after FF7 led many to forfeit this game. I feel for those whom never played this masterpiece. Even released early via under budget they still knocked this out of the park. Tears were rolling down my face as I finished this game. So many great points were brought up about this world, religion, ect.... I think I'll start over on this today :-) Please Squaresoft.....buy the Nintendo share back and continue the series. Do it the justice it deserves.

I loved this game. I struggled with it at the beginning but stuck it out and eventually finished it. Hated hiw they used the second CD as I really wanted more to the game instead of the second CD being mostly narrative. I still have the game. I then played the entire Xenosaga series of RPGs and beat the three episodes. Xenogears is still my all time favorite RPG.
Originally this game was planned to be much larger, have more cutscenes, two more dungeons involving anima fusions with Emerelda's and Maria's gears, and span 4 discs. Unfortunately because of company imposed release timing, so as not to eat into the sales of Final Fantasy 8, Xenogears was rushed to completion. Budget and time constraints for the final product kept this from happening, so the second disc condensed the rest of the storyline's body into one BIG-ASS character narration. This game was great, but could've been better to the point of being the most apex of quality. Director Tetsuya Takahashi knew it, and *WANTED* it to be better, but his true vision for the final product was just beyond his reach. Fucking Squaresoft...conning us out of a great game just to give us two lesser games. >_>
This is still my favourite game of all time. it has been 13 years since I first played this game and until now I have hardly found a RPG that has been able to come close to the standard set by this game. To me ever since Xenogears there has been hardly any RPG that could actually move me emotionally and had an actual game length that can last weeks rather than just days without boring me in anyway. I really hope they would make a full anime out of XG (but better than saga) at the very least.

It changed because Squaresoft owns the rights to Xenogears and if the branch of Squaresoft, who is no known as Monolithsoft, used the Xenogears name they would have been subject to copyright infringement... so they had no choice and neither did we.... honestly, I think Xenosaga isn't THAT bad... it'll just never step up to the legend that Xenogears has brought all of us

I wish some of the old games would get remade for the new systems this is one i would buy again if it came to the ps3 or x-box360
I heard that the creator (Takahashi I think) wanted to remake this since he felt it wasn't good enough. The only risk is that he doesn't want to stress anyone out since there was so much pressure the first time around and a lot of people suffered from it. Though now since Monolith Soft is its own company now and they have the licenses they can remake the game. Just change their names and their design and we'd be getting another masterpiece.
This and ff tactics have by far the most replay value of any rpgs made to date, but xenogears is the only true game that combines every single rpg element perfectly... Love when Bart yells !!
Xenogears definitely deserves a remake, we need justice for disc 2. It's 2020 and this game is still on the top of my list. The sad reality is that they just don't make games as in depth as they used to.
I'm really sad that I don't see much talk about this game. If you had to ask my opinion, I don't think the Xeno series games don't compare to this one in terms of characterization, worldbuilding or even execution of the same themes/tropes.
Oh yeah, and also... The song begins to play and Bart's happy "oyyyyy"... well, let's just say that's one of the reasons why, as short as it is, this reunion scene makes me smile and go "awwww..." (Emmy's smile is also nice).

I was. It has been so much time since I first played this (some 8 years, maybe). After reading Perfect Works, it cleared some of the misteries, but not all of them. Truly, an amazing story. A love that suspasses life and death, Abel and Sophia went through many lives till they found themselves as Fei end Elly. That, and all the other issues humanity has today, portraited beautifully in this game. The art in here is as good as it gets in terms of storyline.
this game truly deserves a kickstarter like Suikoden just to make the "full version" instead a low budget one. damn how human can make this masterpiece despite incapability of funds and time due.

Played this in high school (1999), was so under leveled I couldn't beat the last boss after so..many..fucking..attempts. I was so pissed that I had to give up and not get to see the ending. I held out not seeing the ending and hope to finally start and finish the game one day. Just never found the time due to other priorities. First time seeing this and it kinda brings a closure. One of the best games ever. Thanks for the upload.
sam sneeze just simply kill the sub boss around zues then fight zues"the final boss" last. simple trick, dont make the skill after few hit. save up the energy like until the main char robot glow and make the special move that deal 9999 damage. i didnt notice this until i fought some monster and didnt skill. i was shocked that hiss robot glow so when i skilled its damage is 9999. last trick also is to lvl up chu2x and let him be in ur party at all sub bosses and never use the main char until the final bosss. chu2x heals around 5000 hp or more when level up. plan ur party for each boss depending on their opponent skill and 100% u will win. thats what i did
@@KrunchyTonez617 Xenoblade Chronicles X does some of the things that you'd expect in a modern Xenogears game. You have massive world exploration and you can use Gears(they are called Skells or something instead).
God, how epic this game was! To think that I approached it with an "anime is for kiddies" attitude! But it ended as one of my most rewarding gaming experience. F**k! I so miss the nineties, every game seemed to be starting a new genre back then, everything was new and beautiful!

This is due to the fact that the creators time and budget were cut at the at by squaresoft. They had to rush everything in the second disc. But overall the game is still one of the best if not the best game of its kind. The game engine and its story are still better then most of the current JRPG games. You couldn't stop playing because the story kept you hooked and just pulled you along for the journey.
So very happy to see the Xenogears fans are more passionate about this than ever. At the time this literally influenced my life in ways that previously only deep, quality literature would in terms of philosophy, science, religion, altruism, death and loss, hope and faith, struggle, etc. It's all here, all in a game that apparently will be revered as a classic just as much as any other media work of art. If I win the lottery, I'm putting together the old production team and doing a PS3 remake!
I wasn't too sure what to expect of Xenogears before I played it, but by god was I blown away by it. Xenogears is easily one of the greatest RPG's ever made, and watching this video back makes me want to play it again (I only finished it a week or so ago).
I keep waiting for a game with better and deeper plot/story than Xenogears.. One of the few games that made me cry actually, a truly masterpiece, one above all, and I played JUST ONE TIME... I believe that no other title will ever beat the story of Xenogears. I played this game as a Kid, without even know how to speak/read english at the time, but it was all so clear that actually I understood everything. Thank you Squaresoft.. thank you..
@Metafron I'm with you... to be more precise there's no way to even begin comparing them. The depth of Xenogears story is infinetely greater than Xenosaga's. I'm reading the Perfect Works just now to understand the passages that were not shown in the game and I have to say that the story behind Xenogears is comparable to that of Dune. 15000 years of human history in a game. A pretty ambitious project and a real pity that we won't ever get the other 5 episodes at all... it brings tears to my eyes
Yea this game was like the star wars of RPGs it has one of the best storylines and certainly the most complex. They put soo much detail into every character's background that you could even make a game about the side characters.
This game.... such a story that spans over thousands of years for a single objective, like all the xeno series, huff... this never fails to deliver. Excellent game, and even in an incomplete state (disc 2)
wow. i really miss this game. it makes me real mad that so many people jumped on the band wagon and said final fantasy 7 was the best rpg game ever made. this game really brings back a lot of memories. i remember going to the store with my dad to buy this game. i remember i didnt know about combos and pressed only the "x" button all the way up to fighting ID. I remember jumping up for joy when i found out about combos. haha. gonna get my kids to play this game. really was an awesome game.
It takes me more than 7 years later to understands it. When I learn more about Psychology and Anthropology. It was a beautiful story, if not, a masterpiece of video game literature. It goes talking about religion, existentialism, subconsciousness, racism and segregation, and all sort of heavy subjects on humanity. I even surprised how powerful the message is, and how it could be blends well with the all aspects in video game. We all could learn something from Xenogears, and that is Humanity.
if i have to buy a wii to play future xenosaga titles, ill buy one. now its just up to nintendo to call the shots. if xenoblade isnt a testament to Testuya Takahashi's ability to head very marketable and profitable game, i dont know what is.

SNIF!!!! Damn just watching this makes me cry. No other game, book or movie as had much impact on my life than this truly divine masterpiece. About anybody who played and understood the story of this game was marked by it. Xenogears is in my humble opinion the greatest game ever made and far beyond everything else. It will always have its special place in my heart. :D
@MrCheesepoofs IMO, the thing that pissed me off like shit, was the 2nd disc, they tell you the events instead of you playing them, if they ever remake it, making those parts playable with full world map exploration would be the best thing to do (I think they ran out of budget at the time, that's why they did it like that)

This game is so damn good...ever since i played this, i've been searching for a game that could make me feel the same hype and involvement of the game as Xenogears. But I've failed to do that, even tho some of the games does come quite close, e.g Chrono Trigger. But after almost 12 years since i first played this game, it still remains the best game i ever played.
Yes this game is worth playing. The game is 70hrs + only because when reading you can't fast forward it, so you have to read it at the speed it appears. My best RPG on the playstation (not an FF7 fan). Great Soundtrack also. For people that are to young and never got to experience the good RPGs or the times you should play this game. RPGs pretty much don't exist today they are just first person RPGs now.

Anyone else notice the similarities with Chrono Cross (not a coincidence, both stories are written by Masato Kato)? The whole "Arbiter" story with Serge, and the "Contact" in Xenogears. There's also the save points plot twist in both games, and they serve similar purposes (though more decisive in Cross). Also both games have as main antagonists entities coming from outer space, and then keep dormant waiting for their final acts. There's probably more stuff I didn't notice...
I played Skyrim earlier, and thought to myself, games these days don't have a good story.. I need to replay back those past games. And Xenogears is the one I immediately thought of. Regardless to say, this has been the best week in years of me playing games. Shame that gaming is more about superficiality than depth nowadays.
Teng Thor Are you Hmong? Yeah bro, Citan was a carefully written character. His story was awesome. It never occurred to me that he was more than just a messenger since you see him with the Elites in flashbacks.
4:40 was part of the scene with the Sufal Mass. It was one of Solaris' gambits to try to take advantage of the release of the physical limiters. You beat the big nasty boss, Elly takes Citain's sword and cuts her hand to give it blood to sate it's hunger and ease it's suffering then goes about with her Nissan saint theme to offer her blood to help all those who were mutated. It's one of those Gainaxed ending bits. I love the game but the ending needed more time/money.
Best.....game....ever. The story line is so well thought out that it really grabs you. If they ever made a mini series of this game I would be one of those who´d gladly waste a couple of hundred bucks to buy it. But it wouldn´t be a waste, it would be an investment. The plot and the character developements are brilliant. The combination of ideology and religion and life philosophy is just simply brilliant. Still haven´t found a game that beats this in those categories.
Hell, Xenosaga's storyline also contradicts what was stated in Perfect Works(especially about the Zohar Modifier). And before anyone says "but that could be retconned in wake of a remake!" it's not. The creators were originally trying to create a firm connection with the original PSX Xenogears timeline with Xenosaga based on the Perfect Works' info. But like I said, it didn't pan out that way, unfortunately and we got the current Xenosaga instead.
Xenosaga, was supposed to be the missing parts in the Xenogears story, but because of financial issues with making the games, it was decided to complete it as it's own thing from what I've heard, so the canon doesn't exactly match the original plan of 4 Episodes involving the lead up to the Eldridges embarking and crash, then the 6th episode after Xenogears. I'd like to keep Xenogears by itself, however a remake would be cool. Keep the anime cut scenes though, make new ones :D

i personally have never played xenogears, just all three episodes of xenosaga. as xenosaga was cut short prematurely, i read about xenogears (finding a copy of it is difficult to say the least) to get an idea of where the story might have been going. 3 explains how fei and elly got their powers. 4 would have been the return to earth which would have been analogous to the crash of the eldridge. if the zohar gets destroyed in 5 like in xenogears, then 6 would be abel's return to a higher dimension
the game was not well advertised. FF 7 destroyed anything not enough "Final fantasy" with squaresoft at the time. but yes, it is, for me, maybe the greatest j-rpg game ever made : incredibly deep story, many beautiful characters, many surprises, interesting fights, a lot of backstory, and important message about religion (truly about, not simply dropping religious stuff) and sacrifice. I think Xenogears was the sum of everything learned in Final fantasy 6 and before, Chrono Trigger and so on.

But overall the game is still one of the best if not the best game of its kind. The game engine and its story are still better then most of the current JRPG games. You couldn't stop playing because the story kept you hooked and just pulled you along for the journey.
So very happy to see the Xenogears fans are more passionate about this than ever. At the time this literally influenced my life in ways that previously only deep, quality literature would in terms of philosophy, science, religion, altruism, death and loss, hope and faith, struggle, etc. It's all here, all in a game that apparently will be revered as a classic just as much as any other media work of art. If I win the lottery, I'm putting together the old production team and doing a PS3 remake!
I wasn't too sure what to expect of Xenogears before I played it, but by god was I blown away by it. Xenogears is easily one of the greatest RPG's ever made, and watching this video back makes me want to play it again (I only finished it a week or so ago).

I keep waiting for a game with better and deeper plot/story than Xenogears.. One of the few games that made me cry actually, a truly masterpiece, one above all, and I played JUST ONE TIME... I believe that no other title will ever beat the story of Xenogears. I played this game as a Kid, without even know how to speak/read english at the time, but it was all so clear that actually I understood everything. Thank you Squaresoft.. thank you..
@Metafron I'm with you... to be more precise there's no way to even begin comparing them. The depth of Xenogears story is infinetely greater than Xenosaga's. I'm reading the Perfect Works just now to understand the passages that were not shown in the game and I have to say that the story behind Xenogears is comparable to that of Dune. 15000 years of human history in a game. A pretty ambitious project and a real pity that we won't ever get the other 5 episodes at all... it brings tears to my eyes
Yea this game was like the star wars of RPGs it has one of the best storylines and certainly the most complex. They put soo much detail into every character's background that you could even make a game about the side characters.
One of the best works of art (not just games) ever.
And a story with one of the best endingings too.

wow. i really miss this game. it makes me real mad that so many people jumped on the band wagon and said final fantasy 7 was the best rpg game ever made. this game really brings back a lot of memories. i remember going to the store with my dad to buy this game. i remember i didnt know about combos and pressed only the "x" button all the way up to fighting ID. I remember jumping up for joy when i found out about combos. haha. gonna get my kids to play this game. really was an awesome game.
It is in so many way the greatest game ever made and nothing will ever come close to the greatness of Xenogears.

Best JRPG and best sound track of 1990-now
It takes me more than 7 years later to understands it. When I learn more about Psychology and Anthropology. It was a beautiful story, if not, a masterpiece of video game literature.
It goes talking about religion, existentialism, subconsciousness, racism and segregation, and all sort of heavy subjects on humanity. I even surprised how powerful the message is, and how it could be blends well with the all aspects in video game.
We all could learn something from Xenogears, and that is Humanity.
if i have to buy a wii to play future xenosaga titles, ill buy one. now its just up to nintendo to call the shots. if xenoblade isnt a testament to Testuya Takahashi's ability to head very marketable and profitable game, i dont know what is.

2019,and this game is still nr1 for me,with FF Tactics. 2 games with amazing story,animations and gameplay. Wouldnt mind a remake/remaster.
Since 1998 until now, I have finished this game at least 15 times. I'm still disturbed by the Soylent system. Lol.

The 90's were the best for gamers that wanted to get out of this world for a short time. I still got my PS1 games and will never get rid of them.
This is perhaps the greatest RPG i ever played,followed by (Very closely) FF Tactics.There was never a more engrossing story than this masterpiece here,There hasnt been anything that has come close to being this good since those PS1 days....in my own humble opinion.

+Ferdinand Ferrer No, but FFVIIs initial storyline was this story. Squareenix didn't want the story to go to waste neither did they want to make it a FF title (too dark) so they made a xeno series. Xenoblade Chronicles X i heard is a great game.

SNIF!!!! Damn just watching this makes me cry. No other game, book or movie as had much impact on my life than this truly divine masterpiece. About anybody who played and understood the story of this game was marked by it. Xenogears is in my humble opinion the greatest game ever made and far beyond everything else. It will always have its special place in my heart. :D

IMO, the thing that pissed me off like shit, was the 2nd disc, they tell you the events instead of you playing them, if they ever remake it, making those parts playable with full world map exploration would be the best thing to do (I think they ran out of budget at the time, that's why they did it like that)
I don't want a sequel or a remake. This is a game that deserves not to be touched. Let's all remember it for the masterpiece that it was and still is to this day.
This game was great. It had one of the hardest final bosses in any RPG I ever played.
This game is so damn good...ever since i played this, i've been searching for a game that could make me feel the same hype and involvement of the game as Xenogears. But I've failed to do that, even tho some of the games does come quite close, e.g Chrono Trigger. But after almost 12 years since i first played this game, it still remains the best game i ever played.
Yes this game is worth playing. The game is 70hrs + only because when reading you can't fast forward it, so you have to read it at the speed it appears. My best RPG on the playstation (not an FF7 fan). Great Soundtrack also. For people that are to young and never got to experience the good RPGs or the times you should play this game. RPGs pretty much don't exist today they are just first person RPGs now.

quite simply the best RPG i've ever played... and i've played alot of them. I know they're sposed to be unrelated but I cant help but feeling hugely disappointed in Xenosaga after this
Anyone else notice the similarities with Chrono Cross (not a coincidence, both stories are written by Masato Kato)?
The whole "Arbiter" story with Serge, and the "Contact" in Xenogears.
There's also the save points plot twist in both games, and they serve similar purposes (though more decisive in Cross).
Also both games have as main antagonists entities coming from outer space, and then keep dormant waiting for their final acts.
There's probably more stuff I didn't notice...

I played Skyrim earlier, and thought to myself, games these days don't have a good story.. I need to replay back those past games. And Xenogears is the one I immediately thought of.
Regardless to say, this has been the best week in years of me playing games. Shame that gaming is more about superficiality than depth nowadays.

Yeah bro, Citan was a carefully written character. His story was awesome. It never occurred to me that he was more than just a messenger since you see him with the Elites in flashbacks.
This is one of my favorite RPG's of all times..but I always thought it was SquareSoft's answer to Neon Genesis Evangelion.

4:40 was part of the scene with the Sufal Mass. It was one of Solaris' gambits to try to take advantage of the release of the physical limiters. You beat the big nasty boss, Elly takes Citain's sword and cuts her hand to give it blood to sate it's hunger and ease it's suffering then goes about with her Nissan saint theme to offer her blood to help all those who were mutated. It's one of those Gainaxed ending bits. I love the game but the ending needed more time/money.
Best.....game....ever. The story line is so well thought out that it really grabs you. If they ever made a mini series of this game I would be one of those who´d gladly waste a couple of hundred bucks to buy it. But it wouldn´t be a waste, it would be an investment. The plot and the character developements are brilliant. The combination of ideology and religion and life philosophy is just simply brilliant. Still haven´t found a game that beats this in those categories.
Hell, Xenosaga's storyline also contradicts what was stated in Perfect Works(especially about the Zohar Modifier). And before anyone says "but that could be retconned in wake of a remake!" it's not. The creators were originally trying to create a firm connection with the original PSX Xenogears timeline with Xenosaga based on the Perfect Works' info. But like I said, it didn't pan out that way, unfortunately and we got the current Xenosaga instead.
Best story line any ps version ever..
Xenosaga, was supposed to be the missing parts in the Xenogears story, but because of financial issues with making the games, it was decided to complete it as it's own thing from what I've heard, so the canon doesn't exactly match the original plan of 4 Episodes involving the lead up to the Eldridges embarking and crash, then the 6th episode after Xenogears. I'd like to keep Xenogears by itself, however a remake would be cool. Keep the anime cut scenes though, make new ones :D

i personally have never played xenogears, just all three episodes of xenosaga. as xenosaga was cut short prematurely, i read about xenogears (finding a copy of it is difficult to say the least) to get an idea of where the story might have been going. 3 explains how fei and elly got their powers. 4 would have been the return to earth which would have been analogous to the crash of the eldridge. if the zohar gets destroyed in 5 like in xenogears, then 6 would be abel's return to a higher dimension

Actually this was intended to be episode 4 of Xenosaga since they did say in the end after credits to be continued in "Episode V"
the game was not well advertised. FF 7 destroyed anything not enough "Final fantasy" with squaresoft at the time.
but yes, it is, for me, maybe the greatest j-rpg game ever made : incredibly deep story, many beautiful characters, many surprises, interesting fights, a lot of backstory, and important message about religion (truly about, not simply dropping religious stuff) and sacrifice.
I think Xenogears was the sum of everything learned in Final fantasy 6 and before, Chrono Trigger and so on.
