  • I've just bought a Wharfedale Diamond SW150 to compliment my HiFi system. The only issue is my old amp, it has no sub output! I'll go through a review of the subwoofer plus how to connect it to an older amp. Sound test comparison also included.

    Update - I've bought a SW150 and it's bloody marvellous!
    Just feathers in to bring out a wonderfully full and detailed bass where my otherwise good stand mounted speakers just run out of grunt.
    Placed it out of the way behind my listening position but provided I don't whack it up too high, the bass image comes out right along with the main soundstage. Excellent !

    Crikey, that's a live room you've got it set up in! I'd have to put some rugs and drapes up to dampen things down a bit. Anyways, useful clip. A top to help set it up. You can buy an SPL meter off amazon for less than £20. Spotify qobuz amazon music all do a frequency sweep with a spoken scale, so that plus your ears will quickly work out where your speakers roll off. You want the sub to cut in around that frequency. In my room and speakers that about 40Hz, bear in mind room interaction is the biggest variable in hifi sound. You might, like me also have some other odd spikes, I've got a node at around 80Hz where the volume drops around 6-8dB which I can't fix with the sub, as the speaker port and room have a resonance around 55Hz which I don't want to boost any more. If you've hit the cash you can always set up an auto room correction using a phone app, sonos does this really well.

    I find you it best to set the subwoofer volume while playing some average sort of music that you know how it should sound. Set the sub so it fills the bottom end the speakers don't cover. That gives a nice, natural sound. Obviously if you prefer the thump thump and to have that "I have a sub woofer" thing, then set it the way you like. I personally prefer natural. I have 2 SW-150's paired with a recently purchased set of Wharfedale Diamond 12.2's and they really work well together, complimenting the sound and giving that nice, fairly controlled bass. I do find the SW-150's tend to be a little lazy in their response. They don't give a real punch, it's a bit slower and a little lazier sounding, but not really cloudy or muddy.

    If you feed the ‘sub in’ with the signal direct from source, then send out to powered speakers, will the speakers only handle frequencies above what is set on the sub crossover? It would seem better to have only the sub handling lower frequencies, without the powered speakers also trying to drive down to there too, freeing up the speaker for higher frequency duties.

  • @Malcm59

    Great review! I’d been looking at this as my trusty old Mission760i’s are a bit light on the bass; but I can’t justify spending a fortune on a new set of decent floor standing speakers. I was confused about how to wire it into my amp which just has a single set of speaker terminals.
    Now clear as day, and for £150 as you say, it's got to be worth a punt. Just got to negotiate the spend and “another bloody box !” with the Domestic Director of Operations!
    Am I correct in assuming that placement isn't really an issue and I could bung it in a corner out of the way if necessary?
    Cheers mate 👍

      @UTILITARIANTVUK  3 года назад +1

      Yeah got approval, after a little negotiation! 😂 It shouldn't really matter where you put it. It may sound a bit louder in a corner but you can just turn the volume down. Some people spend time crawling around on the floor with the subwoofer on a chair, trying to find the best spot! 🤦‍♂️

    I have Edifier R2000DB speakers running through my PC with a Creative Sound-blaster Audigy internal soundcard. it pumps out a nice amount of good quality audio/volume. I'd like to add a Subwoofer to this setup but the Edifiers don't have a Subwoofer output at the back of the speakers although they do have a spare line in port. Could i run the Subwoofer directly out of the Soundcard from my PC is my basic question? Thanks to anyone who can answer.

    • @boerboel7777
      @boerboel7777 11 месяцев назад

      Yes but it will be a bit convoluted. Since the Audigy uses mini DIN plugs, you'll need to get a mini DIN to RCA converter (jack or cable). Presumably your speakers use mini-DIN as well so you'll need to get a mini-DIN to dual mini DIN adapter, plugged into the "front out" port and from there to the speakers and sub. Problem is those adapters are horrible - I've never found a decent make. They cause awful distortion, feedback and hiss noise.
      I had the same problem and got an Asus Xonar Essence STXII card which comes with proper RCA outputs. This connects to a Marantz amp which in turn drives the speakers and sub. You might also want to skip all this and get a DAC /mini amp like the Fosi Audio Q4.

    Hi
    The way the speakers are connected along the sub will create a drop in the overall impedance on the amp speaker circuit. Luckily it may work for some time but certainly it is creating an overload that with higher volume will cause sound distortion then may blow the amp.
    Good luck

    • @UTILITARIANTVUK
      @UTILITARIANTVUK  2 года назад +3

      The sub has speaker level inputs with a low-pass crossover. It won't bring down the ohms load on the amp. It also recommends this type of connection in the manual for amplifiers without a line level output.

    why are music listeners using L.F.E
    Low freq. effects a movie standard coded into movies to be used by A.V.R.s
    how is this incorporated into 2 channel music?
    via L.F.E.
    In a 2 channel music system it's not stereo bass.
    line input in a 2 channel system is. now you'll hear a bass sound but what is it ? is lfe a movie code giving you a true stereo bass ? nope it wasnt designed to do that not in a 2 channel music sys.
    line out/in does plus in that application your sub becomes a low freq stereo trap.

  • @xxxYYZxxx

    It appears the Warf. SW150 DOESN'T have high-level outputs, a good thing. NEVER connect your speakers to a sub's high-level outputs, instead run 2 sets of wires from your receiver's speaker outputs, one set to your speakers, and 2nd set to your sub's high-level inputs. The sub's high-level input is ~100+ ohms impedance, so just a fraction of the amp's power is sent to the sub, so you don't need thick wires connecting the sub, making it easier to connect two wires to each speaker output. The high-level out just puts a chunk of metal in the signal path to your main speakers.
    Regarding low pass settings, a free hack is to use the sub's lowest low-pass value, then run the sub out of phase, presuming a standard 2nd order (12db/octave) filter. If you can high pass your mains at 80hz, then low-pass your sub at 40hz while inverting the sub's phase, it's equal to a +9db boost at the LP value, and +12db below that. Because the high and low passes impart 180 degree phase rotations per octave, inverting the sub's phase keeps it in phase with the mains when using this method.
