Struggling with repetitive or complicated tasks in Excel? Say hello to Power Query, your new best friend for automating and simplifying Excel work! Power Query is like an Instant Miracle Cure to your difficult data analysis problems.
🔍 Discover Power Query's Magic:
Import Data Easily: Fetch data from various sources, like other workbooks, text files, SharePoint, and even your Outlook emails.
Transform and Clean: Effortlessly shape your data. Split columns, compare datasets, and even calculate ages with a few clicks.
Efficient Data Loading: Load data directly to tables, pivot tables, or the data model for dynamic reports.
Here's the problem...
Excel Power Query has been a part of Excel since Excel 2016! It's in the Data tab under Get and Transform. Unfortunately many people haven't explored what it has to offer! They continue doing things the old "manual" way, Or the "complex" way with difficult formulas.
And something else you may not know ...
Generally, when you learn something, the more effort you put in, the more you get out. But it's NOT the same with learning Power Query! If you just put in a little effort, you get SO much in return! This is the difference with learning Power Query to learning other skills like VBA.
And that’s why I created this course!
To give you the tools to really make a difference at your workplace. I’m going to take you from Power Query Beginner to Pro!

My work computer has the option to “load Power Query Editor”, is that considered the same thing as “Power Query”?
To everyone new to power query: I started using it 1 year and half ago. I learned by myself as it is really easy for 98% of things you want to do. It totally changed my way of working. Since then I never had the feeling that I needed to re-do everything from scratch again and again. And Power Query is just the beginning, when you start using Power Pivot it gets even better (both work together). Ah and also, while you learn these 2 on excel... be aware that you are learning Power BI as well as the engines are the same at 99.9%. So yes, go for it, it will change your life forever. (Personally thanks to these new skills I got a better job at a bigger company).
Thanks for sharing your experience, Florent!
Motivating.
i wish i can as well, tried to learn by myself and gets annoying at time.. i only need to consolidate the inventory serial number i scanned.
Please share the resources or channels you used
Totally agree and really it's a game changer
Wow - you even went to the length of showing how to do it BEFORE Power Q...
That's a Great Teacher!
Power Query is the greatest Excel tool since the PivotTable, without a doubt!!! Making Excel better since 2013 : )
Mike - I first learnt about Power Query from your amazing videos :) Thank you for all that you do for the community.
@@LeilaGharani Thank you too, Teammate : )
Clever plus humble. I have recommended and benefitted your channels massively. I'm in the middle of doing msptd course
@@LeilaGharani I love the appreciation between two of my favorite instructors.
I know some about powerquery and want to improve. I also know some M but want to improve it significantly and become strong in M. ( and Dax). But, up to know, what I have not specified what it is, is Powerpivot.
Love this video format, Leila! You've thoroughly thought through the perspective of your audiences and created a video that justified signing up for your course, without being pushy at all. Thanks for all the years of teaching me Excel!
Wow, thank you Peter!
The example at 3:05 is so relatable, this is a good chunk of what we FP&A Analysts deal with everyday. You nailed it Leila!
I've been out of the tech field for about a decade, but your walk through here was so clear and concise that I felt right at home, even to the point of standing up and shouting (metaphorically at least) "Yes! Where have you been all my life!"
😁
Your Power Query course already changed my life and got lots of appreciation in my work . Thanks for your wonderful and most interactive session for this course in Udemy.
Leila, you've brought the quality of your video production to the top of the mountain. So good!
Wow, thank you Randy!
Leila, you are a great teacher. I am impressed that you even showed how's it's done the old school method (to be honest, the old school method was what driving my heart pumping and excited about using excel :))
But in the working environment we are in now where velocity + intelligent = success, power query no doubt is a very useful tool to have.
And you are only showing the viewer on 228K+ rows of data, think about having more than 1 million rows where native excel just can't handle.
So true! Glad you liked the video.
What an amazing video. The way you presented it using a proper example. I’m learning power query in my management info systems class and I’m so excited!!
I first heard about Power Query when looking into PowerBI. I was excited to learn that it's built in to Excel, and I recommend it to anyone that needs to transform data in Excel. I'll have to check out your course, because there's a lot that I have to learn about it. Thank you for the great content; you're a great teacher!
Leila, thank you for this video. I cannot emphasize how much power query has changed my approach to Excel. You and Oz have been a real inspiration to me; now, I am working 99% of my excel analysis through PQ rather than regular Excel. Power query has a ton of features way better than regular Excel (the date functions are a great example of how much can be done). Power query is a real game changer. Thank you for sharing.
Wonderful, Yves! Thank you for sharing your experience.
Leila Gharani - well I may have bragged a little about the 99%, but I am trying my hardest to manage data set transformations through PQ. Thank you again Leila☺️👍
Been using Power Query as an add-on to Excel 2010 for a year or two now. Love it.
I am using Excel 2013 but I couldn't add Power Query add-in. Could you please tell me how did you do that?
@@rasoulkhoshravan5912 google power query for excel 2013 and download it from Microsoft office site, then choose the version (32bit or 64bit) and make sure you have an updated version of internet explorer and you're good to go.
Hello can it replace macro?

You’ve no joke, just changed my life, and probably saved my career. THANK YOU
You are more than a simple Microsoft MVP.. You have talent, you have an Hypnotic voice, you know how to communicate, you have a charme, you have the knowledge..but most of all... you know how to teach.Thumbs up. You are a number 1. Bravissima!
Wow, thank you!
I've seen this already ... From your online courses 😁😁😁
Looking forward to complete the course. Thanks for your tutoring Leila. Please stay safe 🙂
I've learned a lot from you. I'd love yo see Power BI lessons from you
This is a brilliant approach to compare two types of processes to show which is better (i.e. Power Query).
I just signed up for the class. Please take my money LOL. There is literally no one on the internet that makes things as easy to understand for all levels of expertise, as fun, or as pleasant to watch! I am so glad I found your videos!! You have saved my life and made my job more tolerable.....and even exciting!
Thank you! I hope you'll enjoy the course!
Never know about Power Query until this. Thanks so much for this!
It's one of those things that once you used it you'll ask yourself how you've ever worked without it :)
I love how you explain the long way steps to get to why PowerQuery is a better idea. Awesome video as always Leila
Glad you enjoyed it!
You've been around for many years, how come I didn't know about you until a few months ago, considering I'm huge Excel Fan. You're way of explaining things is magical. Well done, and keep up the great work. Sharing is caring.
Welcome aboard!
You see reason why I keep referring my folks at the office to this page, easy to assimilate. Your teachings have safe me many times, and this Power Query video is the best ever. Thanks Leila
Wonderful! Many thanks for your support.
To extract the customer ID, copy the entire column to a new one at the very end of your data set. Highlight the entire column, go to data, text to columns and perform a text to columns using the "-" as the delimiter. This will separate the sets of digits and the dashes into columns to the right hand side. The 2nd set of digits, will be isolated into one column. All other newly created columns can then be deleted. You've now isolated customer ID.
Very interesting. A friend recommended that I check you out and I *think* this may be the solution I've been looking for
I hope it'll be helpful Adrienne.
Very quick and easy been using lookups for checking 2 data tables. Now much simpler with power query. Thanks
Ihre Lehren sind sehr beeindruckend. Großartig!
The least I can say about this video is that "It's a revelation"
Thanks for your tips.
My pleasure :)
Thanks Leila for the new Power Query course. It is amazing! 🥰
Glad you like it Ulli!

have been using this tool now for quite some time, once you are used to it is a joy to work with...
An excellent tool. Thank you for the explanation.

Your work is appreciatable.
@leila, That little wave you did from power query was so cute!
Hi Leila, will it be possible to upload the files you're using in this demo?
I'd appreciate it very much.
Thanks
You are good at explaining. Thanks.
You are amazing Guide when it comes to MS Office precisely Excel.
Sincerely, I prefere the voluminous files anyway, i learned a lot of tricks and ideas through old school :D
PS: i learned a lot from you, from the simplest things to the most complex formulas, thank you once again leila
"Wasn't there a second pivot table? Damn, there was..."
Coffee on my screen now... haha
😁
Watching this has me convinced - I need to start using these great tools. Thanks.
Believe me that was the whole course to me. Thank you
Ha! After all these long years with RUclips I finally got to do the first thumbs-up! And this for one of my favourite subscriptions, so happy daze!
I feel like I just won the lottery :o)
Thank you for the thumbs up!
I should use Power Query more, however I would have approached the 'old school' method a little differently. I would have used the Text to Columns feature, select Delimiter and choose the hyphen as the Delimiter to use. For extra spaces, I would use find and replace the space with no space. Then for the text file, just import that into a separate worksheet instead of waiting to try and receive an excel file. Nice video though!
I have one problem with your usage of "Text to columns" feature. It's not that it's inappropriate or anything, it's just not automatic enough for this kind of report. I mean, what will you do if next month you need to update your workbook with the new sale figures ? You have no choice but to do the "text to columns" things and all other stuff again, right? By using formulas, it's (kinda) automatic. Next month you just need to copy-paste the new value underneath your current one.
@@baonguyenthai3840 The first time you do it you can just record a macro of you doing it. Next month you click on one keystroke and you have the same transformation with just one click.
I have the same criticism. The first two "difficult" problems being presented are actually quite trivial, one by just opening the text file in Excel, and the other by doing a column split. I would be surprised if Leila didn't know that, so that part of the video ends up looking disingenuous. Send it to the IT department to convert a csv? Really?
simply amazing. Thank you!
Thank you for this!
"damn, there was" --> *realizes i've had this pain before* --> buys course
Haha. I hope the course will be helpful 😊
My favorite part of the video. Her reaction lets you know, she has actually been there before. lol
After watching this video I was like "Shut up and take my money!"
😂😂
definitely a good pitch. about to check out the course now
Thank you so much for an amazing explanation.
The first thing that came to my mind was “use ms access”. Nevertheless there is probably a lot to be learned from power query
Agreed
ikr! When I saw that I google "is MS access still being used." Maybe they are trying to phase it out and consolidate everything into EXCEL overtime.
@@FutureCommentary1 well power query is a dumb down version of MSAccess. I have been using MS access incl VBA and forms for 15 years, pretty much creating enclosed data sharing applications for smaller companies. MS access has lot more to offer then just data transformation and simple joins. If you wanna be skilled analyst you need Excel-SQL-VBA. And this has been the case for last 15+ years. Excel only now contains more predefined solutions at the cost of learning them all. The only advantage of power query might be the processing speed optimization - which is aparent compared to using formulas, but question is how much compared to Access (SQL), they might be using the same engine. But at the end of the day, MS access was/is part of the most expensive MS office package, so this might be viable option for you if you were using MS access only to link soruce files do some simple data transformation so you can save some money...
@@SKarea51 So would you say learning Access is still relevant today. Or just learn power query and it's a good non complicated substitute ?
@@fictionaddiction4706 I would say learning access is better solution
If we all just use "format as table" and power query, we can say goodbye to VLOOKUP() !.
I'm a huge fan and a follower of your channel. Just signed up for this class. It's fantastic. Thank you!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
This is a life saver. Thank you
I loved it, will learn and use this function
Hi Leila, this is great as always from you. Have not seen your courses available on linkedin learning. My firm and (many other organisations) i know have firm wide linkedin learning licenses, so it will be great to have your courses available on linkedin learning.
Thanks
Very useful. Thank you
Leila, You are amazing!!! Thank you so much for your remarkable instruction and sharing your mastery.
You are so welcome!
At the end of the associated article you compare size of PQ file to formula equivalent. It would be interesting to see how much more space would be saved by using PQ to load the data into the Data Model so that data compression is applied. Granted, since this is a relatively small data set the compression saving would also be small.
Why am I so excited to learn this.... you are amazing!
i really enjoyed watching all your video tutorials ♥️
i am really amazed thanks so much
I've subsribed and turned on all notifications after seeing this. Good stuff Leila! Thanks :)
