    Struggling with repetitive or complicated tasks in Excel? Say hello to Power Query, your new best friend for automating and simplifying Excel work! Power Query is like an Instant Miracle Cure to your difficult data analysis problems.
    🔍 Discover Power Query's Magic:
    Import Data Easily: Fetch data from various sources, like other workbooks, text files, SharePoint, and even your Outlook emails.
    Transform and Clean: Effortlessly shape your data. Split columns, compare datasets, and even calculate ages with a few clicks.
    Efficient Data Loading: Load data directly to tables, pivot tables, or the data model for dynamic reports.
    Here's the problem...
    Excel Power Query has been a part of Excel since Excel 2016! It's in the Data tab under Get and Transform. Unfortunately many people haven't explored what it has to offer! They continue doing things the old "manual" way, Or the "complex" way with difficult formulas.
    And something else you may not know ...
    Generally, when you learn something, the more effort you put in, the more you get out. But it's NOT the same with learning Power Query! If you just put in a little effort, you get SO much in return! This is the difference with learning Power Query to learning other skills like VBA.
    And that’s why I created this course!
    To give you the tools to really make a difference at your workplace. I’m going to take you from Power Query Beginner to Pro!

    To everyone new to power query: I started using it 1 year and half ago. I learned by myself as it is really easy for 98% of things you want to do. It totally changed my way of working. Since then I never had the feeling that I needed to re-do everything from scratch again and again. And Power Query is just the beginning, when you start using Power Pivot it gets even better (both work together). Ah and also, while you learn these 2 on excel... be aware that you are learning Power BI as well as the engines are the same at 99.9%. So yes, go for it, it will change your life forever. (Personally thanks to these new skills I got a better job at a bigger company).

    To extract the customer ID, copy the entire column to a new one at the very end of your data set. Highlight the entire column, go to data, text to columns and perform a text to columns using the "-" as the delimiter. This will separate the sets of digits and the dashes into columns to the right hand side. The 2nd set of digits, will be isolated into one column. All other newly created columns can then be deleted. You've now isolated customer ID.

    I should use Power Query more, however I would have approached the 'old school' method a little differently. I would have used the Text to Columns feature, select Delimiter and choose the hyphen as the Delimiter to use. For extra spaces, I would use find and replace the space with no space. Then for the text file, just import that into a separate worksheet instead of waiting to try and receive an excel file. Nice video though!

    • @baonguyenthai3840
      @baonguyenthai3840 3 года назад +1

      I have one problem with your usage of "Text to columns" feature. It's not that it's inappropriate or anything, it's just not automatic enough for this kind of report. I mean, what will you do if next month you need to update your workbook with the new sale figures ? You have no choice but to do the "text to columns" things and all other stuff again, right? By using formulas, it's (kinda) automatic. Next month you just need to copy-paste the new value underneath your current one.

    • @FutureCommentary1
      @FutureCommentary1 3 года назад

      I have the same criticism. The first two "difficult" problems being presented are actually quite trivial, one by just opening the text file in Excel, and the other by doing a column split. I would be surprised if Leila didn't know that, so that part of the video ends up looking disingenuous. Send it to the IT department to convert a csv? Really?

    • @SKarea51
      @SKarea51 3 года назад +3

      @@FutureCommentary1 well power query is a dumb down version of MSAccess. I have been using MS access incl VBA and forms for 15 years, pretty much creating enclosed data sharing applications for smaller companies. MS access has lot more to offer then just data transformation and simple joins. If you wanna be skilled analyst you need Excel-SQL-VBA. And this has been the case for last 15+ years. Excel only now contains more predefined solutions at the cost of learning them all. The only advantage of power query might be the processing speed optimization - which is aparent compared to using formulas, but question is how much compared to Access (SQL), they might be using the same engine. But at the end of the day, MS access was/is part of the most expensive MS office package, so this might be viable option for you if you were using MS access only to link soruce files do some simple data transformation so you can save some money...

    At the end of the associated article you compare size of PQ file to formula equivalent. It would be interesting to see how much more space would be saved by using PQ to load the data into the Data Model so that data compression is applied. Granted, since this is a relatively small data set the compression saving would also be small.
