I just picked up this knife today and watched this video for confirmation bias. I don't want to like Spyderco, but I love this knife.

I tried to not like Spyderco as well, but then I bought a Para 3 LW, and now I'm hooked. Got a PM2 CruCarta, the Shaman is next, and then I'll get a Manix because liner locks are great but I want to try the ball bearing. They are the best folding knives, it just is what it is. Others might look better, but none are as 'full package' as the Spydercos. And I own Benchmade, Giantmouse, Viper, and Kizer folders as well, can't beat Spyderco in my opinion, however cliche that sounds.

I hate carrying any knife with a handle that cramps my hand, and you might as well carry as much blade as you can fit in the handle. Big-ish knives rock, and the only reason I'd carry something small is legality.

Weirdly enough, this is the model that became my edc. Got an s30v, loved it...so I picked up the crucarta sprint, deep carry clip, and that’s been my main edc for a while now. It’s just great to use as a general purpose knife. Opening packages, fishing, etc...there isn’t a more comfortable, pleasant-to-use folder on the planet. The only thing I really don’t use it for, oddly enough, is breaking down tons of cardboard. It’s just a little too thick for that....I use my larger Civivis, chaparral, opinels, etc for that and they work just fine (the Civivis have almost limitless working edge retention for such things). But for everything else in my day to day life, the Shaman it is....

My Microtech Halo V, with my own custom mirror polished edge almost as sharp as a razor blade...I absolutely adore this knife, but it scares me a bit, because of the single action mechanism it has and how sharp it is. There is no safety that helps it stop the blade making it to the locking point, like the double action Ultratech, Troodon, UTX-85, etc. It's just pure coiled up spring power, waiting for you to press the button and rocket out 4.4 inches of Elmax steel out the front of it reaching its locking position with no blade play. You know how they say most all OTF's (excluding the G/G Deadlock) all have blade play, well, the real Microtech Halo's do not have any blade play whatsoever, at least on mine. I could physically baton with this knife in the bush, and even though I would obviously want a fixed blade over an OTF in that situation, it would still suffice in my opinion. I just wanted to share my excitement for my Halo V that I own, and YES, to most people, spending way too much $ on a knife, but it's my choice. The time I spent with diamond grit stones and diamond lapping films on my Wicked Edge system to get that mirror edge was definitely a project. FYI, I went down to .1 Micron diamond lapping film finish to acheive mirror finish, and started with a 600 grit diamond stone that came with the WE Knife Sharpening System.

I got one and to my pleasant surprise it was larger and a bit bulkier than I thought. Contrary to what most knife people like I appreciate a little heft. I used to carry a 9mm Baretta and got used to feeling the heft of the weapon. If I don't feel it I keep reaching for it thinking that I lost it or left it home.

Same here, weight is an absolutely overemphasized issue in folding knives.

  • @deanalbertson7203
    @deanalbertson7203 7 лет назад +2

I think these larger folding knives are great to put in your nightstand, in your car, in your kitchen, in a camping bag, in a bugout bag, and in your toolbox. Even if they are too large for some to carry as an edc, they can still be a great knife to have around. Nick, please do some top 5 lists, such as top 5 edc knives, etc.

It came kind of stiff though (moreso than other compression locks) but we will see how it goes. I love the way it feels in hand though! Totally agree. Gem status.

This is the one new Spyderco design that really interests me.. It's good to see a harder use knife, Spyderco could use more..
I'm far from a steel snob but I'm trying to avoid S30V.. I've had enough to build an ocean liner.. It's chippy and too hard to sharpen for its edge retention..But, that won't stop me from buying the knife.. Just a great job by Spyderco..
    Good review as always..

Great looking knife. I'm still glad I got the PM2 in S110V. I've got big hands and the PM2 fits perfect, fits in my pocket, not as heavy,. I have seen reviews of the Native where the only complaint was the ergonomics; sounds like this might be a possible answer for big handed folks. Good job Nick!

Nick I don,t understand why you and others are comparing the Shaman to the PM2 And Native. This knife has all the qualities, blade shape and size as the Manix 2. in fact it falls right in the middle between the Manix2 and the XL. This is without a doubt one of the nicest knives that they came out with this year in fact for me it is the nicest. I'm glad you approve and like it too.

I see you have been getting a lot of comments from people to compare the Shaman and the Manix 2... I have to agree... A comparison between the two seems to be a natural... I have the Manix 2 lightweight and it's one of my favorite knives from Spyderco... Some have said that the Shaman is a larger Native which I can see in the blade but the handle looks to be unique to the Shaman... I think a review of the Shaman with the Native and the Manix would be really sweet...

Question for you. My working week edc is a benchmade 940, weekend carry rotates but is usually the PM2 - blurple 110 ( awesome slicing blade) I love playing with reate hills flipper ..... What would you recommend as a great feeling flipper with a great slicing blade?

Hey Im a fan of your Reviews and in a big canundrum and everyone can chime in on this. I'm a knife collector and also user (I use my titanium custom 2017 megalodon for example for EDC and hiking alike) and love Spyderco knives. I wanna treat myself to a new blade and need your help to decide. I always was intrigued by the shaman since I love the PM 2 and manix 2 for EDC and have them both in Rex 45 and they kick ass, but never got around the priceof the shaman. I didn't have any rust problems with rex 45 yet but didn't have them on me in the rain. The 4 knives I have (get) to choose from are: A 230 buck shaman in Rex 45 on eBay, try waiting and getting the upcoming zwear Micarta Shaman for 250, get the watu for 190 (20 CV with carbon fiber handle, super light for EDC), or the smock in s30v ( not a fan of the steel and unsure of the design tbh but buttonlock 8) for 150. I love the Micarta of the zwear shaman and am not sure if Spyderco s rex 45 actually is not better than their zwear especially in this design, plus I can't be certain to get onenof the Micarta ones. The watu looks great ,I'm not sure about ergonomics though and it doesn't have the 'prestige' of a Shaman and while being supposedly great, 20 CV is probably below Rex 45 and zwear in every regard. Help me choose, shabazz and gang before it is too late. Ps: Is the shaman clunky and heavy in the pocket? And thanks to every advice beforehand.

Shaman vs Contego? Both are gems. I edc a Contego but just ordered the Shaman. What's your take, Nick?

jandlp14 I want to love my contego but the jimping is overdone and so uncomfortably sharp. The shaman just melts into my hand. It's definitely my favorite spyderco and one of my overall favorites.

I believe the back spacer gives you a little bit of grip in reverse by not being flush.

Thank you for your reviews and channel in general, I find it very useful and for a long time, I'm watching your reviews even if I'm not that interested in a particular knife.
Anyway, for nearly 3 years I was wondering if I do need a "one hand opening knife" thought I have a Victorinox and Leatherman multitool. For years I was looking through a lot of knives, to name the fey: Spyderco Chokwe, Yojimbo2, PM2, ZT 0562... There were hours and hours of watching reviews and I haven't immediately fond your channel, so there were a lot of lousy reviews and a lot of interesting ones. But I like your channel the most? You give some interesting information, some smart thoughts and how picky you are (same here). I hope my English ain't as horrible as it seems to me and I do sound not so bad and you can understand something. Bottom line - I love your channel!
I bought Shaman just today. Got a good deal, my local seller (here in Kyiv, Ukraine) gave away a Para3 as a gift... But...
It's surprisingly stiff. And even after I have disassembled it several times, trying to lubricate it with some oil (not nano oil, but some light machine oil which I use for my shaving Moser machine) it hasn't become any smoother. Also, I have found that when I press a compression lock to shut the knife, I can hear some squicking and as I was wondering what's that, I have found that compression lock scratches the very blade part in this diagonal part "\". I don't know if you understand what am I trying to say. I understand that there has to be some smoothening with opening and closing (as out of the box Para3 is fall down smooth and I can't even compare it with Shaman - this is how stiff that feels in comparison) but this squicking sound makes me feel worrying and maybe you can suggest something to help me out here?
    Thank you, dear friend!

    • @volodymyrpetrov9677

After several disassembles I've managed to gain smooth action (at least much smoother than before). But the squeaking sound of the compression lock scratching the lower part of the blade (in this diagonal part "\") ain't gone... Maybe you could help with some advice, please?

Are you saying this is an outright better knife than the PM2, or only with regards to beef? Thanks for another vid :)

  • @Pharto_Stinkus

Holy Shnikes! I just front-flipped this! It wasn't super smooth, but it worked. THANK YOU for the idea, I had never considered this, I'm going to practice it.
So, the elephant in the room... According to basic English grammar rules, it is SHAH-MUN (there is no e on the end to make it a long A sound). I have had this conversation more than once, and I will die on this hill! :)
Another point, the name makes sense, they are sticking with the Native American theme for this family of knives (Native, Native Chief, Shaman).
Lastly, "best" hard use knife? But you've reviewed the AD10.

If weight is the problem, the cf sprint should help. Custom cf scales and matching backspacer that addresses the dip down would be a great for people who don’t want to wait for the sprint.

Could you possibly do a review on the Spyderco Manix 2 M4 Natural G-10 Knife exclusive to BLADEHQ with the CPM-M4 blade? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us on RUclips, always looking forward to your next video...

I love big knives (RAT1, the bigger Steel Will knives, BM 940s etc...) because they can do what the little ones can, but the little ones can't do what the big ones can. You can choke up on control the depth of your cut, but you can't make a small blade bigger. That simple.

What do you prefer: ZT 0562 or Shaman? Nick, I'm cracking my head on this one for more than a half a year now. Could you please make some short comment answer? I like them both, I've held them and they both feel very nice. The only thing I don't really dig in 0562 are the bearings, but it has a nice deep carry clip. And Shaman makes me wonder why do I need so much handle, if it seems the only reasonable way to hold it - is with an index finger on the blade. So holding it only with your hand on a handle is too far from the cutting edge makes me wonder... Maybe you will have some answers for me here. I always love to watch your knife reviews, thought I only have a victorinox swiss knife and it seems perfectly capable. But owning a one hand opening knife is one of those things when you seems just NEED IT. Anyway, maybe you would have some thoughts on comparing these two. If so, I would LOVE to read them!
