- Today, we'll take a look at the BladeHQ Exclusive Spyderco Shaman in M4 steel, and you'll experience one of my very favorite ways of completely voiding a new knife's warranty: modifications to make the scales non-ugly and make the knife 'mine'. When they become more widely available, it'll be here: www.bladehq.co...
(Sorry about the first version, got cut off for some reason! Thanks RUclips.)
Sorry about that, RUclips appears to have truncated the first upload for some reason. Here's the whole thing!
Thanks Nick... we were worried
wonder if they made a shaman in damascus
A camp stove in the back yard or on the balcony may be a better idea.
Why no low carry clip?
Nick Shabazz I have to say, I didn't particularly like or dislike the jade- I found myself on neutral ground. But after the dye job, well... let's just say I'm not sure I can keep it jade if I purchase the knife. Beautiful result!
The Shaman is the knife that I carry 90% of the time. It's freaking amazing. The only problem it's caused is my wife asking why I keep buying knives if I carry the same one all the time.
The ultimate question.
Im not married so i cant say same, but my parents say the same thing
Better is this question when german police stopps me: For what do you need a knife ? Can´t believe....
@@MrRob-dd2hr it's the best tool you can carry but it scares people that never used the tool.
@@MrRob-dd2hr sorry you have to live there and deal with that.
A Shaman to dye for.
Take my like and leave
I actually like the jade g10 on this one.
Love Jade. have it on two/m4 PM2s
Agreed-- good jade G10 is one of the more interesting and cool-looking materials for covers.
Agreed, it’s a LITTLE cartoony but not in a bad way
To each his own. I personally think the jade g10 is butt ugly. My wife loves it though, so we have a few BladeHq exclusives that have the jade scales.
Me too
As a sheer coincidence, I bought a M4 Shaman a couple of weeks ago. Micarta scales. I usually prefer a smaller knife, then I got a Manix 2 and liked it a lot. Same with a PM2. Decided to try out the Shaman and don't mind telling you that I'm impressed. Love the thing.
I bet spyderco loves Nick. He is truly their best salesman. Not only does he make everyone love spyderco, he encourages buying more just to mod
"listening to a jackass dye a knife blue." Love it! Just ordered one of these in its regular s30v/black g10 variant. First Spyderco.
You make reassembling a knife look so easy. I crossthreaded the pivot screws of my first Shaman.
Jade scales tend to be one of those love or hate things. I love mine.
The recent factory 2nd sale made me a Shaman owner. Guess I'll look at videos about it until it arrives. 😊 Great looking dye job on those scales.
I love how you add “itude” to things. Especially “smurfitude”
The Jade G10 scales look good to me, and look even better with a black DLC blade and hardware. I was able to snag both the satin and DLC M4 versions of the BHQ Shaman.
By the way, when you dye do you use the whole box of RIT dye for a small job like this? Or can you just use part of it?
God this made me want to cry. I LOVE the Jade G10 scales and would love to have one! I missed all the sprint runs in them and they don’t appear to ever be going to make any more.
what drivers are you using for the torx bit to remove the clip and scales
I second this question
www.scoutleatherco.com/product/hex-bit-driver-round-shorty
What torx set are you using? Those things are beautiful
I apologize if you mentioned it in the video and I missed it, but are you able to recall which specific color you used to achieve this result?
"If you like bile you're gonna love jade G10" Haha so funny. :-)
Nick, what kinda of torx driver do you use?...... they seem to work well
Picked up one on the secondary market. Fantastic knife. My first Spyderco since my 94 Proventor. I would not have liked the scales if they weren't translucent. I think the see through makes it kinda cool.
Hey Nick what driver handles are those? I've not seen any like that before.

Completely agree for a work knife the pukey🤮 scales don’t work👎🏻.
Really like the denim blue color!
How did u make the sharpening choil??
That's pretty awesome! Nice dye job. I appreciate some transparency.
I have the standard S30V version and I love it so much. I can just imagine how you feel about your M4 version. Great video Sir Nick.
“I’ll certainly take a little bit of smurf action...ahh in this particular context that is” lmfao
What wrench is that you're using that free spins after the bits are loose? Need that methinks.
I'm just gonna go into the other room and dye... I haven't laughed that hard in a while. Thanks Nick. Fantastic video. I love the change you made plus the advice to would-be knife modders. Nice work as always.
All we need now it the z Hunter in m4
Still need to get one of those.
I know you don't review MT because of the hardware. But, the Socom Elite uses all torx. I like small knives but the SE is close to perfect. It's a beast with a T20 pivot, highest grade aluminum, huge liner lock. It's light for the size and carries well.
I'm going to pick one up as soon as it's for sale. I'm a bit worried it's too similar to the PM2 which I own and love.
Dude. That’s a wicked custom job. 👍
Nick! Great video. I'm about to attempt my first dye.(on the exact knife too!) Could you please tell me the amount of water you used in your stove pot? I'm going to try and mix of two colors to achieve the color I want.
Can you share what type of threadlocker that blue stick was? It looked quite convenient in that stick form. Thanks

Now that’s a nice Shaman!!! I’m an HVAC tech and EDC the Shaman S30V and it kicked the ZT0562 out of the pocket.
11:46 Nick laughs like Dr. Hibbert
Blue alpinist making an appearance. Very nice!
Just ordered my 1st shaman. I love the manix 2 so I decided to give it a shot. Found a deal I couldn’t pass.
Still waiting for the cruwear/micarta combo
Is that coming out? Its sounds amazing.
I hope this is true. I would wait for that too.
I love micarta so much.
It's fantastic
I got one and it's sweeet
I would have swapped the scales from the other one.
I think I've modded 98% of all the gear I use.
What color Rit Dye Did you use Nick please and Thanks.
I love the jade scales. I have 3 of these BHQ exclusives in jade.
That's a fantastic improvement!
I too like the Shaman and only bought one because of the Nick Gem rating. The only issue I have is that the choil pecker on the blade hits my finger upon closing when I disengage the compression lock. I'll need to send it off to razors edge for correction if the Shaman ever makes into my heavy carry rotation. But why spyderco....why?
Does the opacity of the finish on those 'see through' jade scales depend on how long it's left in the 'hot pot'. Also, if I wanted, say, my standard black Shaman to have red scales can I use Rit Dye or would just end up 'very dark red' (or not work at all even)?
I doubt that any color over black would work, but maybe somebody with more experience could chime in.
"Suicide Blue" - dyed by your own hand. Nice!
The jade looks way better than the stock black version I have imo.
Hey Nick, what do you use to create the sharpening choil? A file, dremel or router?
Shaun Tan Look up Alistair Phillips (custom knife maker and designer of the Kapara). He shows how he does it with a diamond file.
Looks OUTSTANDING!!!
Love that it maintained its translucence - in a much more attractive color!
Excellent, as usual! 🙌🏻💙
Congrats, that came out awesome!
You got it first to make us want it even more. Yea agree on that jade g10
Beautiful dye color👍🏻⭐⭐⭐ Love your channel. So educative. I'm a subscriber and watch your videos on a regular base. Love your understated jokes and your quick replic. Regards from Norway👍🏻🤠 Keep em' coming👍🏻
Great, informative and hilarious...
And I do hope this version will be back at a descent price. Pre-dyed if possible.
I was wondering how you prevent your fingers from getting blue every time you hold your knife?
After adding some oil, has any of the dye begin to run? Has the dye come off on your pocket?
Not historically, no.
nice video, and nice work. keep us informed about how well the dyed scales hold up.
Hey Nick. I have a question or two regarding the topic of todays video. How does customizing your knife (dyeing handle scales, or putting on aftermarket scales, adding or finishing sharpening choils, etc.) affect the value of that knife. With Spyderco and Benchmade the warranty is void after taking the knife apart. So For example lets take a Delica 4 and put aftermarket scales on it, add a sharpening choil and break the sharp corners (finishing what the factory should have done). Because I changed (or dyed) the scales Spyderco will no longer warranty this knife. So this knife that I have customized, that no longer has a warranty, does it still have value? Has it increased in value (Aftermarket scales are well made and expensive) or decreased in value (due to having no warranty and the changes made to the knife). How does just finishing a bad sharpening choil, and/or breaking the sharp edges affect the value (did not disassemble the knife)? I know the short answer is the knife is now worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it but I feel there may be more to it then that. And obviously, any knife that Nick Shabazz takes apart and maintains would skyrocket the value. I would love to see a video response to these questions if you have the time and feel that enough people would find it interesting to make it worth doing.
Thanks for the content.
It's usually a non issue. It may say the warranty is void if you take it apart, in the fine print. That's just a CYA measure. It covers them for things like you taking the knife apart and stripping the liner. That's YOUR fault. If the liner lock snapped, but you had taken the knife apart, it shouldn't be an issue. That's a material defect. There isn't going to be any issue if things are clear cut YOUR fault. As long as the problem didn't side from you taking it apart, there isn't an issue. Same goes for cars. People told me that modifying my exhaust "WiLL vOiD yOuR wArRaNtY," and when I needed a new engine from Ford, my exhaust was never brought up. (Even though they had my truck for 9 months. I had a platinum F150 and they gave me a king ranch to drive for the first 6 months, and a brand new raptor, off the show room floor, to drive for the last 3 months. So no big deal.)
The value stays the same but I think custom handles and screws look better
Adding a sharpening choil can make a difference in long time EDC usage and edge touch ups. All of my Leatherman Waves, and Charges received a choil on the PE blade.
Awesome Nick looks good and you changed up the usual I really like this video I actually learned a good easy way to Dye scales
Finally, a view into The Batcave.
Thats my flashlight, love that monstrous Olight. Hey the knife ain't bad either. Hope I can get my hands on one. How do you think a dark red dye would look? Don't wanna end up with a pink knife for sure. Great vid as always Nick
I really really want some of those jade scales for my Shaman. Can’t find any. 😞
6:29 Everyone learns new words with nick shabazz!
I've avoided blades with the jade g10. It just doesn't catch my eye at all. I remember when you put the black vinegar patina on your opinel. I always think of that whenever I get the idea to do something on my own.
So this knife. I set my email to be sent when it was ready, and had the web page loaded for it and had it all ready to go.
It got released, in my time zone of EST, at 12 noon. I was working and had my mind on other things until about 1223, twenty three minutes later, I had remembered and went to buy it but it was fully sold out.
So just a minute ago I did a check on eBay because I kinda wanted a regular shaman and wanted to see their prices.
It’s awash with the BladeHQ M4 variant going to $325, $250, etc. That is deeply ugly. It appears that people solely bought it for resale value, rather than to buy it to be used.
I wanted to try out M4 as a steel in an every day carry situation where I carry it and use it on a physical job. But I couldn’t due to scalpers, and that’s disheartening.
Hey nick have you had a chance to handle the viper technocut fortis I would think that knife would make a great piece to review.
Where you get your bit drivers from?
It's a beaut for sure! Nice job.
What’s that blue paste you dip your screws into before screwing them in? And what does it help do?
It's called Loctite, it helps make sure the screws don't loosen up over time. If you're gonna get some make sure you get blue, not red. Some people say the purple is better but Nick uses blue so I'd just do that, lol...
More generally it’s called “thread locker”. You don’t necessarily need to buy loctite brand, but if you do be cautious that not all companies use the same color coding. Although I use Permatex brand thread locker and I believe their color coding is the same (red being permanent, blur being medium, etc).
I also don't love the jade G10 - so this is a significant improvement (for me). Thanks for sharing!
Now ... all it needs is a deep carry clip. Very nice
I thought of you the minute I saw it on Blade HQ!
You make a super important point towards the end of this video (did someone say spacer struggle? No, I don't think so, anyhow) - sometimes it makes more sense to sell the knife than did not quite live up to our expectations, rather then modify it all the way up to its grave end. BTW, how is that dye job holding up over time? Did some wear start to show?
Hey Nick, Is this still in your collection?
Well that sold out fast... Bummer! I actually really like the black-on-black DLC variant, but the M4 for $10 *less* is a no-brainier. Would love to see DLC on a nicer steel for the next sprint run.
They gotta make it in some more steels right
I love the "Go in the other room and die" bit. I can just imgaine a To-Do List for today and at the end just "Go into the other room and die."
Just walk into the other room and collaspe as if someone flipped a switch.
Turned out awesome looking...will be doing that to mine when I get it...probably try different color but like the blue 👍
I always enjoy your vids Nick. Thank you
I'm not a fan of the jade g10 either. Hoping I can snag one anyway..scales can be fixed or swapped as you've obviously proven.
I need to file the top edge of my Spyderwolf. Can I use the ceramic file set?
So you went from bile green to mimiograph blue? I can smell the ink from here.
I got a look at these compression lock ! and they use the liner lock as a block like the triad lock and being on the back you don't have to put your finger in the guillotine ! now that should be a very strong lock ! I was thinking they were regular liner locks just on the top ! have to take another lock at these !.
Can't wait till Tuesday
Get that Wiha/Boker stubby torx driver from knives and tools website. Its only £11 plus £3 odd shipping. Its really nice quality. It works great in my Spyderco knives. Comes with 7 Wiha torx bits. Magnetic holder.
what brand are those bit drivers?
A ceramic coating on the blade would be nice to help out with corrosion issues
Trying to decide between the shamen or the smock
Ooooh, thinking about doing this to my tan civivi praxis because after carrying it for a week, my jeans have died a blue line across the g10 from where it rides in my pocket.
Did it rust yet
Can you do this with any color ( black) FRN??
And a blue Alpinist?! The man loves exclusives :)
Actually he hates exclusives, but happens to have two of them.
god i want that watch. but the secondary market price is nuts immediately as to be expected
@@NickShabazz it hurts my soul that I won't be able to get one...
Enjoy them in good health!
I want this so much but I am concerned a bit about rust. Any idea if they will do a dlc version?
If you take care of your knife, or simply use it daily, it will not rust, but develop a nice patina.
Unless you edc it in saltwater, then all bets are off!
Cool video! I enjoy watching others do the things that I think of doing, but I’m too worried to do.
That knife turned out great!
I agree that the original color had to go. Lol.
Thanks again.
One of the best big carry knives👍🏼
Love it! Very entertaining video as usual
Can you please beg for a compression lock native?!!
Exactly why I sold my Native 5. I just don't care for a back lock for EDC use. I love my Matriarch 2 but much prefer compression, liner or a frame lock for everyday use.
GUNSnDOZES times two on that!
I too, am not a Jade G-10 lover. I RIT dyed my Jade M4 PM2 to a forest green. Worked great but took quite a long time to get it to the color I wanted.
How can it be better than PM2 when flipper tab is intruding on lock?????
Jade G10 is an acquired taste that I REALLY like.
The original color was hideous in my opinion, but I kind of want to buy a knife in that color just to try dying the scales. It turned out really well. I had no idea you could do that.
Hey Nick, can I buy those jade G10 scales from you?
Looks way better.
