  • As a tribute to Nancy Holt, who passed away on 8 February 2014, here is an extract from The Sculpture Diaries from when Waldemar visits her most inspiring work, the Sun Tunnels, deep in the Utah desert.

Very nice homage to Nancy Holt's landmark sculpture, Sun Tunnels. Waldemar describes with ease and lucidity the vast nature Land Art daringly composes into graspable subject matter.

100 years from now art about celebrities will be in and land art will be out. All relative to perspective and the moment.

She planned this work while trying to get pregnant. Just as she thought she was, Bob was killed. She lost the baby in her grief. I asked her one day as she prepared to die whether sun was a homophony for son. She didn't answer much but was silent for a long time, a slight tear in her eyes. Maybe....maybe.

Call me a Philistine, but I'd rather see nature in its natural state. I appreciate the sky and land's colors and shapes without help from artists like Holt and Smithson "framing" it for me. Felt the same way looking at Donald Judd's work at Chinati, in Marfa. To me, it despoils a lovely scene with man-made stuff that will be around for generations (or be removed with great difficulty and expense. Why don't these artists install this kind of art on THEIR land?

      Philistine - NAILED IT!

Yep. Philistine. Appropriate word. If you only knew how the land is being raped out here by oil and gas companies, and the denuding of the high desert through ranching. This is a shrine to the sun and the land. Go art!

Mmm...think you did this really well W.J...but I'm not really satisfied with the aesthetics of the final result. I mean..I'm more Alhambra myself..than as you put it...something you might see on the edge of a motorway.
