    Editor's Note: My edits were all made to keep the video on one, central topic by editing together relevant commentary from many parts of Hasan's streams to create a storyline that is still followable by the viewer. I also edited in commentary of my own in places, in addition to relevant external information that improves the viewing experience. A lot of edits were made for comedy purposes, or to enhance the comedic timing of certain beats, but never to misrepresent Hasan's point of view.

    9:54 what happened and why people were taking even steel and concrete? Well as a child of 90-s in Russia and Ukraine I can tell you that life was very hard. Most people lost everything they had: jobs and all the money. It was mafia organized groups in every city, police were non existent or part of the same mafia. That is the time when a lot of oligarchs came to power in all post ussr countries. It was drugs and alcoholism everywhere- very depressing and dangerous time. And yes people were taking steel and anything they can find to sell to either feed the families or buy drugs.

    In school I had a friend whos family migrated to Germany from Semipalatinsk in 1997 or 98, when he was 7 or 8. His family was ethnically russian and they experienced somewhat of a post-imperial backlash from ethnic kasachs. Semipalatinsk (like most of the planned high-technology or high-industrial cities across the USSR) was populated by technical intelligentsia from the russian SR and these towns and cities often had more comfortable ameneties than the surrounding places where the ethnically non-russians traditionally lived - so there were ethnically charged riots, plundering and even pogroms in some of these non-russian former soviet republics, which was a major factor in driving the migration of the ethnical russians. This is a major trauma which still is very alive in the diaspora russians all across europe today which somewhat informs their view on ukraine and putin and all that.
    Of course the socialist perspective, even back when the USSR still existed but was on the brink of collapsing, was to reject nationalism as framework for these kind of things.

    • @malfoysass
      @malfoysass 5 месяцев назад +2

      im from kazakhstan (not ethnically kazakh) and there were no pogroms. they are not the victims of great discrimination you are implying. "the trauma" ?? some russians in the post soviet countries feel attacked when people even mention struggles experienced by people they colonised or if you say something anti putin. trying to portray them as poor victims when there were so many skinheads beating up anyone who looked like they are from Caucausus in the 90s. go to russia now look at the "slavic people only" rent ads and police brutality against central asians.

    • @ithemba
      @ithemba 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@malfoysassyeah sorry I was annoyingly obscure: I wasn't trying to imply there were pogroms in kazakhstan. With "pogrom" I was specifically referencing the Pogroms of Baku and Sumgait in 1990 and 88.
      I am totally in agreement with you. Modern Russian ethno-nationalism racism against central asian and caucasian peoples and straightup neo-nazism are rampant problems. My point was that nationalism on all sides left trauma in the collapse of what was a multi-ethnic union - including the semi-collonial character of cities like Semipalatinsk.
      And I was specifically referencing only the 2,5 million Russians in Germany, the so called Spätaussiedler, who are the second biggest diasporic population in Germany after turkish people. (a few of them actually had russia-german or jewish ancestors but very few had a living cultural tradition or identity as any such and henceforth identified as russian in germany)

    • @zhu_ink
      @zhu_ink 5 месяцев назад +1

      I think you're misinformed. I'm not sure about the relationship between Russians and Kazakhs in the 90s. There might have been some isolated conflicts, but as far as I know, it wasn't serious enough to lead to pogroms or riots. Even now Russians in Kazakhstan are not discriminated against. Many ordinary Kazakhs who are not involved in politics actually like Russians and Russia, seeing them as a 'brother nation.' Also speaking Russian can increase your chances of landing a better job compared to speaking Kazakh in Kazakhstan. Unfortunately, the sentiment is not reciprocated for Kazakhs in Russia, where they are often discriminated against and viewed as savages by Russians. While not everyone in Russia holds these views, nobody can deny the existence of prejudice and xenophobia against Central Asians.

    • @malfoysass
      @malfoysass 5 месяцев назад

      @@ithemba well your original post wasnt really about nationalism from "all sides" it was about trauma of russians all across europe. Its not really a both sides are bad situation. Russians have never been discriminated to the same extent as people they literally colonised even after the collapse of USSR. I dont know your friends family but I know from personal experience what russians often call oppression is people criticizing their chauvinistic views and refusing to speak russian. and i now many russian from my town who moved to germany. most of them moved for better opportunities, which is fair, and not because they were facing any backlash, the extent of which you're greatly overestimating.
