Paul gets all my respect. Him and Gene wrote so many unbelievable songs together. Everybodys always talkin about Kiss's music being second to there stage show, I so disagree with that. There 1st 6 albums alone have so many great songs, and there all really fun to play on the guitar.
People seem to be missing the point. At 1:28 he gestures that it's garbage. He doesn't pretend to be a solo player or a guitar virtuoso. He's a songwriter and a showman. You might not like his songs or his showmanship but many do and he's made a great career from it.

I was at this concert in Cobo Arena. It was last minute, Surprise-broadcasted live on WLLZ 98.7fm too. This was also Bruce Kulick’s first performance with the band under official contract. Signed that day.
When you're right, you're right. The thing is, Paul has some really great lead licks that would flow into Ace solos... really great stuff...... but he came out and did this nonsense. I don't even think this was cool back then.... like at all.... with all those acrobatic guitar players. It still happens, though. Reb Beach is a good guitarist, saw Winger just recently and he was good.... but saw them a few years ago and he mailed in a solo that was nothing but hammering, pull-offs, and tapping that was really, really embarrassing - sorta like Paul does in this video.

I know compared to Van Halen, Ace, Bruce, etc he isn't the most technically talented guitar player, but when you add in all that jumping around and singing, it's very impressive he can jam out an awesome riff too.
LOVE KISS. Also. He knew he was middling that’s why he did that “meh” gesture then went straight to killin it. Paul is the workhorse of Kiss and I love when he gets time like this. He kept the Kiss army alive through the 80’s. Much respect.

They're the reason I started listening to R&R in grade 4 when Kiss Alive came out, so I'm not knocking the band.
St. John couldn't do his solo due to Reiter's syndrome. Stanley took over the guitar solo. Not a bad job from a lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist. Knock him all you want, but the truth is most wouldn't have the balls to try, but Stanley's never been short of those.

Ace Frehely plays pretty simple licks too. Yet KISS fans are in awe of him. Paul Stanley plays some simple licks and you're all like "oh, nothing special"
I know Paul is not really good as a lead guitarist but I am still impressed the way he taps the fretboard. But the second attempt when he jumps around and start riffing out, men he's rhythm skills is a monster.

IMO, Paul is one of Rocks best singers and rhythm guitarists. I’d pay just to see him play riffs, bc he knows how to make a killer riff just like Malcolm and Angus! When he broke into those riffs after the tapping part I was way more into that than his tapping. Cool to see him attempt, but man are his riffs awesome

I saw Kiss on both the Animalize and Asylum tours and he played this both times. Even then I wondered why he bothered. He also talked about the size of Eric Carr's manhood far more than I was comfortable with. Great shows otherwise though.
He is an average at best guitarist. But he has written some great tunes and is a world class showman. He is getting a little goofy and testy as he gets older. I couldn't bear to read his Twitter anymore.
Actually a much better guitar solo than what we got from Ace on Alive 2. Why? Because there was no actual guitar solo from Ace. They were too hard up getting three sides of live music and one side of new songs. Those songs should have made it onto Dynasty with side four of KISS Alive 2 having actual live music. pauls always talkin about how kiss is all about doing things for the fans..... youd think after ALL THESE YEARS He'd have learned a couple pentatonic scales and blues licks to throw down for a solo....but no.... He's not all about being a better musician for the fans.... He plays the same way as when I first saw kiss in 76... Even his 2 hand tapping attempt was LAME..... Then he throws out some power chords like he's really jammin away or something but doesnt really take you harmonically through chordal progressions......He is and always will be a crappy guitarist.....I remember one interview with paul stanley talking about randy rhoads playing and how randy made sense in his playing even when he was using his tremolo (whammy bar)..He said most players were just pulling on the bar not really knowing why or where they were going with it while randy seemed to know exactly where he was going and what he was doing when using his tremolo.... So in hindsight - that interview was like in 1983 or so - after randy died - it was a tribute to randy on a radio show called metal shop....Youd think Paul would have used someone like rhoads as an inspiration to play better...But no....He choses to be crappy all the while...... Ace had a real personality in his playing...They dont even realize what they lost in ace.....Pauls a dumbass
ace launched a million people into playing guitar through his own music...although peter,gene and paul all may have influenced people to play music - the magnitude of their achievement is not even close to what ace frehley did......like i said - ace had a real personality in his playing...and that stuff just isnt that easy to achieve....ace is still known to be a guitar god....not that hes up there with todays top players - but he still and always will have his own niche in rock and roll guitar

Paul Stanley has a great talent for singing, working an audience, and fronting the band, but a guitarist he is not. He can play rhythm guitar fairly well as long as he sticks to basic rhythm riffs, but he shouldn't be trying to play lead on stage. He just makes Kiss look bad.
What he thinks is cool is actually quite easy...That tapping is a basic one which shows he's full of ego without any form of virtuosity. I could play like this 10 years ago. =/

I LOVE this - good entertainment! When KISS had the fun solo spots in their '80s concerts, it made for a fairly unique, well-rounded show.
