Been a fan since I first heard him in 1986. Such a talented musician and he seems like a really humble guy on top of it. He deserves so much more recognition than what he gets.
Long time fan first time comment; MacAlpine is a virtuoso. Inspirational instrumentals and amazing clarity, technique and raw emotion to back all of that. Deserves a spot in the guitar hall of fame for sure!
damn, one of the best solos I've ever heard. Compared to the other guitar heroes out there, the compositional aspect of this piece is on another level. Especially from 3:38...it's so good.
i think his tone is amazing..anything tony does is amazing..just so appreciative to be able to hear a tone at all..peace to the world and the universe..yewwwww
People see a guitar solo on YT and expect something flashy instead they see/hear subtly, modal complexity and dynamics and it all goes straight over their heads cuz they were expecting him to do some Van Halen stuff. Jazz and Prog Rock requires maturity to be appreciated. I love Planet X - Clonus.
Dude I'm sure. He could. Swap licks out with any one else and match technique. His proficiency is quite evident. There is scant little. This Man can't play
Its just amazing !! I could jam with him, on GGE2012 NY, he was on the keyboards man, i was o nthe guitar, and he just ripped me of hahaha !! :D amazing person and so talented musician
As bad-ass as he is on guitar, he's even better on keyboard and piano. So much talent in just one guy. I'm glad you kicked the shit out of cancer, brother. Your a true warrior!
i love tony .. i believe he is a great musician ... personaly his distortion is not of my preference ... and it is not hes virtuosity what mesmerize me ... nor when he play fast ... but his musical intelectuality ...
that is because Tony studies the great masters of music; not just other ‘guitar players’. i play guitar but i rarely listen or study guitar players. but i love tmac.
@ChrysostomosDear friend, that of the trained ear is sad because to be an exquisite sound it must be enjoyable by all kinds of ears, for its part, the sound of Tony if he is mired in the dependence on the style of music he professes cannot be exquisite then. my account I try to explain what being a keyboard player myself and making samples sounds on the keyboard I still keep saying and thinking that its distorted sound will be due to the pickup that it uses in lower mode or it could be the effect of the pedal itself but comparing it with the sound that I like and describe as exquisite What is Guthrie Govan, Greg Howe or Marco Sfogli & RIck Graham, which I repeat could be the brand of the guitar or something uncontemplated but I cannot give an excellent reference to Tony's distortion and I feel sorry for that.greetings friends
tony , one of my faves for years., i get it how people say he isnt melodic, its the bands format, not him personally, in the 80's he was neo classic which of coarse was all MELODY, he is a lot better than you think, a classical pianist as well, but yea i get it how some people dont get this fusion stuff, i prefer his early albums as a solo artist
Tony is just beyond scary amazing!!! I met him on The Monsters of Rock Cruise and he is such a humble person!! And If you haven't seen him show off playing guitar and piano at the same time...hold on to your butt!!!
I haven't heard MacAlpine since he did that record insert with Guitar Player Magazine, but immediately recognized him and his tone when the started the staccato arpeggios. Super clean playing, but I never could get into his songwriting style. Not many have the level of dexterity, but I don't see other guitar players citing him as an inspiration or influence. At the least, he was one of the first bona fide shredders out there. He's up there somewhere. Also I recall he is exactly as fluent and speedy on keys. EDIT: and that was one sweet key and soundscape change at 3:40, woot!
I am a bit tired of shred but this I like. Some great melodic parts, great tone, original and great tapping although i I am sick and tired of most tapping solos.
Yeah that tone aint what it used to be. I thought he was at his peak during the Premonition and Evolution albums. Hot damn he shredded the fuck out of those albums.
Give Tony credit for being the only modern black guitarist who understands/gets rock music. Certainly better than Hendrix ever was. Educated & trained in classical music. He’s jammed with various other great guitarists. He mentored Nili Brosh for a few years in his band. He has good taste for composition & structure, & is melodic, even if some of it may not be memorable. Going from 6 strings, to 7 & 8, he keeps looking to push the boundaries of modern rock, with Prog sensibilities. He manages to hold his own even among better players; Vai, Gilbert, Loomis, Timmons, etc. But no one will play guitar better than Shawn Lane, R.I.P.
Guy always play his stuff well. Very finished . In my mind he is one of the founding fathers of modern day shred. That initial group is just crazy Yngwie, . Gilbert, Moore, Friedman , Howe, Becker, Kotzen, and McAlpinre. . If you ever try to play their stuff, they are all have very different systems of playing . The last great pre- internet generation where they had to make up what they didn’t understand. These days? All the styles have converged because they can watch each other on RUclips
Total prodigious. And. Far and away. The quentissential neo classical guitar Way smoother than. Yngwie malmsteen he knows how to be loose and transcend the vainglorious pitfalls when ascending the shredgod mountain summit
Amazing that his guitar is so plain. The instrument is just there as a tool for producing sound and doesn't have any flowers on the fretboard, a contoured body or any other visual distractions. It evokes almost a Japanese minimalism. I wonder if that is his signature model.
I love Tony's music and playing, been a fan for a long time. The only thing that bothers me is his persistance on keeping the bass mic on, it makes the sound muddy. I think the reason a lot of guitarists do that is makes playing cleaner.
@@WaltPowellEnt Perhaps well known amongst guitarists or hard core rockers. But ask your average music fan who has heard of Steve Vai (Crossroads, anyone) and Joe Satriani and Id bet my balls they will not know Tony's name.
To compare two guitarists is a bit leame.. You don't have to play fast to be a good one like David Guilmore so.. It all depends on what you like. Take many jazz guitarists with amazing skills, but not known because you don't listen to jazz. Tony is also a jazz guitarist, classic pianist,....well..U name it what he doesn't play. A multitalent by far!
Tony Macalpine is a very underrated guitarist though he's one of the greatest.
Не! Не е подценяван хич. Един от най-големите е и всеки китарист го знае.
No not really. He's very known for his skills. He not a household name but those who know who he is know how well he plays.
Been a fan since I first heard him in 1986. Such a talented musician and he seems like a really humble guy on top of it. He deserves so much more recognition than what he gets.
Been a fan since late 80's too.. along with Vinnie Moore .. they are the best.. still love to hear their early albums more than 30 years later...
Tony = Guitar God
His technique is flawless and his choice of tones, melodies and rhythms are tasty.
The scary thing is that he is just as good on the piano. Brilliant!
Hell yeah
yeah this guy is impossible
MacAlphine este Al doilea Shawn Lane de pe planetă
Shawn Lane era la fel sa poate mult mai bun...RIP Shawn Lane
He is very talented on guitar and song writing, I agree, but I feel his piano playing far exceeds his guitar playing.
I met Tony at a guitar clinic back in the 90's and he was a super nice guy. He gave me good advice. A very approachable and humble man.
Long time fan first time comment; MacAlpine is a virtuoso. Inspirational instrumentals and amazing clarity, technique and raw emotion to back all of that. Deserves a spot in the guitar hall of fame for sure!
True
This guitarist is amazing. Anyone who doesn't think so, doesn't know what they're talking about.
Thank god your health is better brother. And thank god you exist, because you are awesome. Tony, your so badass!
man..7:27+...now that is what macalpine is truly a master at...those moments which just cut through everything and take you to another level....
Wow, this is the best unaccompanied guitar solo I have heard from him. Tony truly has come a long way!
Simply put, an incredible guitarist.
I saw one of his interviews on RUclips this guy is like from another planet he’s too deep and to intelligent he should’ve been a rocket scientist,,
but at the same time the humbleness is off the charts. I got mad respect for this guy.
When a 7 min guitar solo is acceptable - love his phrasing
still remains one of my All Time Favorite guitarists in the world. Perfect vibrato and monster licks! god he s great!
His vibrato is far from perfect and he doesn't sound clean at all

Tony is so SOFISTICATED that few can understand his vibe.
Nice joke
Fuck all Tony haters
Lucky you can though
Agreed.
One of my favs.
He is on the limit of jazz...
As he plays..
Few can understand? Lol, WTF?
One of the beast to come out from the 80s. Easily ahead of Steve Vai for me.

He is a rare blend of actual classically based musicality combined with world level (sweeps, flash and speed picking and hammer/tapping ) skills.

Great to see he's still shredding after all these years
What a beautiful ear! Tony comes up with the most tasty stuff ever.

weird just how those pickups sound like active ones. but they're actually passive right?
Every bit as good as Vai, Satriani, Petrucci or Bettancourt...yet you rarely hear his name thrown around. Phenominal player.
