@@UnmendableYou don't think she's right about the shoulder anatomy?
@@bbq878 sure don’t! I’ve been an emergency veterinary technician for the last 5 years. She is right in the sense of “dogs aren’t made to put their shoulders out to the side” but she lost me completely when she said dogs don’t have a ball and socket joint. They in fact, do have a ball and socket joint. The reason why dogs are unable to move their front legs as humans can is because they do not have a clavicle. It does not harm your dog to have their legs out to the side unless it begins to put pressure on their joint which would result in a tear or dislocation. However, I have never once seen a dog come in with a shoulder injury as a result of being picked up. It is also worth noting that dogs do have a ton of nerves in their scruff and past about 3 weeks old, should never be picked up by their scruff. The way this lady holds the dog after being grabbed by the scruff of the neck, would arguably be of more danger to the dog as the way she holds its rear puts a significant amount of pressure on the lower portions of the spine

Not sure if this goes for dogs as well, but cats do t his because there is a nerve under the skin that paralyzes them when lifted by the scruff. It's so that they can't try to wiggle free when their mom lifts them. Might be similar with dogs but I'm not sure.
Its great for potty training. When yiu catch them going into a squat, you pick them up by the scruff and they stop pooping or peeing. And then you can take them out and give them praise when they do their business outside.

As a puppy, the scruff is literally MEANT for the puppy to be picked up by their mom that way. Lots of mammals pick up their babies by the scruff because that is what it’s FOR. For older dogs though, they try to bite the scruff when fighting to assert dominance because it hurts. So when their a puppy, scruff is meant to pick them up by but when they’re adults do not pick 25 pounds by their neck
finally a proper answer, the comments are wild!!!
yeah!! exactly. for older dogs i have noticed they tend to HATE it when you pull up on their scruff, so i think you are absolutely right
Cats at any age tend to go a little limp when grabbed by the scruff. If you do it as kittens they curl themselves instinctively.
It is not MEANT for that. It's just instinctual because they don't have hands. Comprehension is not a friend of the conservative demographic
Lmfao. Adults bite the scruff because it hurts. You are not capable of logic
I do something similar to the first but with more emphasis on holding the torso and then when I get him up I cradle them to where they are comfortable. No problems for nine years doing it!

All pets prefer having all 4 paws on their person when being carried. It gives them a sense of safety and support.
That’s what i do. With my grandmother’s yorkie, I always put my arm under his rump and my other arm under his front legs. I sort of create a platform that i’m holding him securely while he’s pretty much laying in my arms
my cat will force me to carry her with her tummy pressed up against me, or she’ll just climb on my shoulder
Opposite with my dog. She refuses to be held unless she’s upside down and cradled like a baby!
My cat will let you carry her around like a football, but the second you touch her back feet, she wants down.
Cats and dogs (cats especially) are very keen to protecting their bellys as that's where they are the easiest target for predators. That's why when a cat shows you its belly, it means it trusts you not to hurt it. So the 4 leg on human thing also protects their stomach.
As a person who doesnt own a dog this is very helpful.

It's literally an evolved mechanic for survival. This is why it's good to do your research before giving your uninformed opinion.@@noodlelynoodle.
Bfr bro it’s not bad it’s just so he don’t bite
I have an irrational fear of accidentally ripping off an animal's skin so whenever I see someone grabbing them by the scruff, my brain just freezes.
The thing is too many people do it even as them get older.
When the dog is a puppy well, it's fine. But a grown up dog will get hurt if you lift him like this
I don’t think being grabbed by the skin feels very good so I just pick them up by the belly
You need therapy
How strong do you think you are???😂
@@michelveenstra9906 Pathetically weak... which is one of the reasons why it's irrational. Also, gravity is doing most the pulling.
Some people in this comment section have already pointed it out, but I want to reiterate do NOT pick up an adult dog by its scruff. Grasping their scruff while they are supported or on the ground, however, can calm/confuse some dogs. Do NOT lift an adult dog by its scruff!
i don’t know who you are but i do know im not picking up a 115lb German shepherd by his scruff 😂😂😂
@@Sffker It also applies to small adult dogs.
Edit: I.e. do not pick them up by the scruff if they are full-grown
Leave it to a furry to be leaving animal advice comments
@@lmSheep thank you, seriously, for the reminder that I have not been a furry in about nine years. this account is only for youtube bc my subscriptions are here, but the page was never updated until I saw this.
@@almandinefox5160 lmaooo 😂 yw
Not me seeing this RIGHT after picking my pup up to snuggle. 😂
For the people saying "don't do this to adult dogs" the video is literally called "how to pick up a puppy properly."
Right but I still think it needs to be said, a lot of people are too dull to fully comprehend what they’re reading so they’ll take it as “how pick up dog”
@@esg_zom3319 uh, how right you are. Point taken.
yea people will strait up throw tortoises in a lake and think they just saved them then only by spreading the information that only turtles can swim and their killing tortoises can we save a few tortoise lives and the same thing for bees you always hear that bees are endangered but never why and that's because honey bees an invasive species are killing off all the native bees when people hear the bees are endangered they start raising more honey bees causing the problem to become worse
in a world where some adults think chocolate milk comes from brown cows we need people to clarify and spread this information
You always have the people getting ready to pick their adult dogs like this.
Usually I just grab them by the back legs and swing them like a bag of groceries, I’ll try this next time.
I ugly laughed at this
Good to see your open to change.
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
The way I snorted
SAME LMFAO
Side note- if you’re picking up a dachshund/sausage dog puppy, please don’t do this it is really bad for their long backs as they are prone to spinal issues, instead put one hand under their chest and the other under their but and lift them, make you’re you support their whole back at all times while holding them!
- A happy Dachie owner
it's really bad because it puts all the weight hanging by their lower back
Thanks! I have a dachie puppy :p
Same for basset hounds
yep! I recently got 2 daschie pups and they definitely can get severe problems, so supporting the back can help prevent fatal problems.
that’s what i was thinking
The dog thinking, you know what's also not cool? You choking me with this G-damn leash!!!!! 😅😂😂😅
I’ve always tucked a hand under my dog’s chest and lift her like that before letting her sit on my arms. She absolutely loves to be carried ❤
YOU do it the right way!!!!
I've started doing this recently. Learn something everyday. ❤
Same but even if it doesn't hurt my dog I get too scared and refuse to use his scruff
I unknowingly lifted my dog under the front legs and he would yelp and I didn't understand why - i understand now! Thanks!
Yup - that’s the way to do it
I carry mine like babies so that they're laying down in my arms instead of actually being carried. They like it a lot honestly since they just get to chill while i carry them around.
My dog loves to lay like that in my arms even though he’s 45lb now haha!
Poor things
As a species we've nigh on wrecked ourselves, now we wanna wreck cats and dogs too
Same
@@stunnedmulletblah9714 we already wrecked them, it's too late to prevent it now, might aswell just have a good time.
Yeah like I’d rather not carry them by the scruff bc it might cause pain 😢
I love that she took us to a local pond for this short 😂
😂😂
this made me laugh
Don't be mean, that's her home.
Dying 😂
So that if he misbehave she can throw him into the pond.
that doggo dedicated himself for puppy safty education, what a good dog
When she held his mouth shut,
the pup was like come on lady , i aint gonna bite the hand that feeds me
same i don’t get why she did that
@Uchiha.Itachii its probably so she could properly demonstare without him trying to lick/sniff her hands lol :')
I thought her method had too many steps.
If you're concerned about weight distribution, lift the puppy with one hand under the chest and another under the belly.
There, problem solved. She made it more complicated than it needed to be.
boygenius reference???
@@Uchiha.ItachiiYeah, my guess is to keep the puppy's head up so we can see the shoulders and demonstration better
As a puppy, I can confirm that this is how we like to be picked up.
Lmao😂😂

Why strangle the puppy?! And pic the puppy by the hind!!
@@Cansved That isn’t strangling the puppy, learn about puppy anatomy.
@@bonnobomonkey And you’re wrong bruh
@@Cansved lol animal mothers pick their kids up by their neck, the part of loose skin there doesn’t hurt them to pick up. Have you never seen a mother cat or dog pick up their children by their neck?
I’ve picked my dog up under the shoulders for 15 years before he passed and he was perfectly fine
I love how she's talking about how to keep a puppy comfortable while absolutely manhandling its snoot
Frr like wtf was she doing
look at how a female dog carries its pup, u will understand better
trust me she was not man handling anything in that video 😂
This is the proper way
I don't think so, not only does mother dogs do that to their child, but also cats. Most anime mothers do that

I just say “come up” and my dog jumps in my arms and I can carry her around. Trained her to do that years ago because I hated bending over to pick her up. She’s the sweetest mastiff ever.
How the fudge are you catching a mastiff mid jump 😂😂 aren’t they like 200+ lbs
