Growing up in the 80s and experiencing these tones in their infancy and as they evolved is something I’m grateful for, and definitely what I try and emulate my sound after
Epic tones!! You nailed Lukather's first solo album tone at 05:06. That tone at 14:04 really reminded me of Eddie's tone on "Balance". Funny how all these lush tones, that they wanted in the 90's to have us believe had become cheesy, feel fantastic still today. To me, the best and most convincing tones by far were the first rack units and the plugins at the end. Damn I miss the 80's.
Your right there rack gear will always be the best they just have a different sound much warmer on distortion and very prominent clean tone with a metallic like sound

No matter what Generation you use, the modern modeller sounds lush, the Pedals Sound most interesting, the original 80ties and 80ties 19" Rackstuff is the coolest way to get a great and unique sounds out of your rig. But the most important is your own playing. In summary, each rig can deliver a good sound. There is nö winner!
You get it right... Every gear is fun, so do what you want and get the tone you like. Taste and Ear is changing all the time and that is, what it makes it just more fun to dial in one`s new taste, just to get back to the roots when we get old.
Loved it.. All the sounds were great honestly and I don't know why but 80s tone is kind of coming back to me. So much fun and inspiring.. Thanks in great part to your videos and Michael Nielsen, I actually just bought two cheap 80-90s rack effects ( a Yamaha SPX900 and a Lexicon MPX 110) to start my journey in guitar tone acheology. ;-)
Very cool, Leon! I was 18 in 1986 so fond memories there. For my money I like the axe fx tones the best, although all these sounds are usable. Run to You is a good vehicle for these tones, I'm gonna dial this up on my FM 3 I just got and go back in time! Bringin on the Heartbreak would be very cool as well. Great content for an aging guitar nerd, thank you. Oh, I'm glad knowing some theory is cool again 😆
Jamie, you and I are the same age. Since you and I grew up on "Theoried" Guitarists like Randy Rhoads, Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore, Steve Vai, etc, knowing Theory was ALWAYS in style for me :)
I like the rack setup the most by far, i feel extra wide stereo delay image and the chorus/pitch is very different, the attack with all that short delays stole the poll for my ears
I love highly processed tones. It's interesting that each of the chains had a unique flavor, very cool. They all sound good but I liked the more integrated and consolidated sound produced by the all AXFX version. With the hardware versions it sounded like the FX were sort of stacked on top of each other compared to the in-the-box versions. As usual a fun and inspiring video ...
I still play Cuts Like A Knife front to back. Around 1983 we moved from Illinois to Florida, and my brother had that cassette going at all times... So it’s nostalgic. Run To You was his follow up hit, so it was also much enjoyed, but nothing comes close to his debut album. Obviously the rack gear sounds better than the plug-ins, but any gear will do.
Superb video, Thanks Leon! R.J. Ronquillo did a video on something similar a while back, which was great, but used many UAD plugins that I didn't have. Fortunately I have all the soundtoys plugins which are awesome. I love how you have shown rack, pedal, modeller and plugin variations to get the same thing :-)
I can't find my last comment, just letting you know the Axe Fx III MKII arrived some time ago, it's amazing! It's all just a matter of taste with this thing, anything I dial in sounds great!! Thanks for the great content!
all approaches sound great, obviously because of it's you :D but my favourite are the rack setup, the sound got something "more"... TC delays are wide and clean, the intellifex chorus is crazy good...
Awesome video I've been doing very similar setups one with all pedals and line 6 hd500 and also plugins. Very cook video I started playing guitar around 1982 so I used play alot the old equipment as well.
When you engaged the Intellifex, WOW! The first notes you played reminded me Alan Parsons' - I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You guitar solo. Whatever method and fx you used afterwards didn't match that chorus sound, liquid and wide. Maybe the plug-ins were more close, then the Axe-Fx and certainly not the pedal. I grew up in the '80s and everything was drenched in chorus, rock, pop, heavy metal. When we got sick of it we listened to Back In Black album by AC/DC or Motley Crue's Shout At The Devil, just a guitar and a cranked amp!
That must have been such an exciting time to be a guitar player! That intellifex chorus is pretty unique - 8 voices with controls for delay time, chorus rate and depth. So lush!
Awesome video! I just mad a hybrid pedalboard rigg with a couple of rack units. Lexicon PCM70 for reverb, Korg DL8000R for delay and Eventide H9 for pitch. Run this through a MusicomLAB Stereo Line Mixer Parallelizer that sits on my board. I also have a Yamaha SPX that i use sometimes for Symphonic and Pitch C. I like the classic sound of the old units :D
Hi Leon, those Soundtoys rack effects sound incredible! You got that 80s tone, but you could still hear the chime of your Strat cut through, even on the distorted channel. Were you running them into a particular amp modeller/plugin?
Honestly I thought the Axe FX made the best sound. And if you think about it, what would they have used in the 80s, they would have used the most state-of-the-art rack processors!!
Great video. I grew up in the 80's and love the 80's tones. I have the H9 and an eventide Micropitch pedal. I really like the DIG but where would that fit in the chain?

Although it‘s already 3 years back, i‘d like to know how you set up the 8 voice chorus of the Intellifex. It‘s nice to have 8 voices, however, it does not make it easier to dial it in.
