Love your videos! This was really enjoyable - school/home life.
Fellow 1st grade teacher here from MS! We have 3 days of school left (1 full day, 2 half days). We have been using CKLA Knowledge for the past 3 years and we like it! We will be adopting CKLA Skills/phonics this coming year. We used Fundations as our phonics curriculum the past 3 years so I’m nervous to try CKLA Skills but hopeful! Love your videos! ❤
My school district has used CKLA for over 7 years. I just finished LETRS and feel that CKLA aligns great with the science of reading. My school district has also been looking at different reading programs this year and we ended up choosing the newest version of CKLA. It seems to be the best at combining everything we like in a program.
As a teacher moving to 1st grade, your videos are very helpful! I will be rewatching some this summer for more ideas. Thank you!
Love your videos!! Wondering if you have the shark math project available or other shark things you talked about?? Fun and interesting for the end of the year!
Just finished our Reading Adoption! We piloted Wit and Wisdom and Benchmark Advance. We went with Benchmark Advance.
Great video! I also get to mt classroom about 45 minutes early to prep. I enjoy the quiet before the chaos!! Lol. How does your family do dinner time? I find myself doing dinner later and later for my kids when I have something going on after school......
Yes! The quiet before the chaos is the perfect way to describe it lol! Family dinner has only been happening about 2-3 times a week in this stage of life and honestly we've been living off grilled cheese sandwiches with steamed brocoli, pasta and meatballs, and a "snack plate" of all sorts of random things (pita & hummus, cheese stick, HB eggs) lol. On most days, we are quickly making them a plate to eat before they head off to practice so they have food and then we eat something random later at night when we get home!
I just sat thru three presentations last week on HM&M, SaVVas My View, and Benchmark. We really liked My View and Benchmark was my second choice. We will see how things shake out. I liked how My View was laid out and I also liked the online components. The decodables looked really good just my opinion. Funny you said about exercising my teammate and I walk the school hallways while our kids are at specials. We will slso do it after school. We have 3.5 days left in Georgia.
We enjoyed the new Benchmark phonics/PA additions from Wiley Blevins!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE CKLA! We use it at my school and it is amazing! The kids love it and I have seen such a difference in their reading :)
I also went and observed CKLA last school year. We observed them and Superkids and it was pretty unanimous....Superkids won out, though CKLA looked good too! After one year of Superkids.... I'm loving it!
Indiana 1st grade teacher finishing my 26th year. I still get sad when I have to say goodbye to my kiddos😢, but they are ready to fly to 2nd grade! We have 4 days left. Monday is our family picnic. Tuesday is field day. Thursday is awards day. I’m not sure we will get too much accomplished, but it will be fun!
I feel you!! I always cry on the last day of school!!
The knowledge is fun and interesting but takes a lot of time!!!
Love your videos! As a first grade teacher using Wit & Wisdom, please share what you/your team liked about the program. We also use Fundations.
Thank you 😊
We really liked Wit & Wisdom!! We would just want to keep using it along with Fundations so we don't need to pilot/implement TWO new programs at one time!
and it's unclear if we can do that at this moment!
Hi Susan, I have been teaching in Norwell MA for 26 years. I also took the IMSE training 20 years ago in my school district with the founder Jeanne Jeup and then became OG certified about 10 years ago. I have taught 3rd and now teach 1st. I have been following you for years and have tons of your TPT stuff! I love it! We just adopted Intro to Reading this year but our school district and all the teacher felt we should keep Fundations. We did not love their phonics so I don't know if that is an options for you. Like you said I would feel confident teaching phonics if they did take Fundations away but wanted you to know that another district in Massachusetts kept Fundations with our new Intro to Reading program. One bit of advice......the Waggle online program for Intro to Reading is absolutely awful! It never worked. We complained so much that we stopped using it. We are now using I-Ready Reading (because we have i-Ready math) and it is working out much better. We had been using Lexia for years but it is very expensive.
That is great info thank you!!! We are currently unclear about keeping Fundations although we know many MA districts have chosen to keep it even though it didn't come out "all green" on EdReports. If that were an option, that would make life a lot easier for us! And that's great to know about Waggle. We would love to use Lexia if we could!
Your videos are always so helpful. What information does the about the author page include?
What did you use for the clay animals? Did they paint or use markers? They look so cute.
We used the Crayola model magic and students tore off pieces before hand and mixed them with markers to create the colors!
Are there any tips on how/what to prep during the summer for the upcoming school year.
Hi Susan! could you please recommend a writing program tailored for English Language students?
Love this!! Where are your pants from?
They are lightweight ones from Amazon I got at the beginning of the year! Here's the link: amzn.to/3WNimYX
HMH isn’t great for the lower grades because it doesn’t give students a good foundation on basic skills. It brushes upon the skills but doesn’t spiral back enough.
We use Into Reading in my 1st grade class and have just begun to use the new Structured Literacy component. What are your thoughts about HMH Structured Literacy?
Our presentation included a lot about their new structured literacy portion which aligns with LETRS and it looks great!! I really liked that part honestly! I was more "concerned" about the language comprehension/knowledge building aspect of the program!
Can you share your PowerPoint or like the original PowerPoint? I like the ones where you have the site words with the learn by heart. I was teaching kindergarten ASD and this will be my first year school coming school year will be my first year teaching first grade ASD was looking through your videos which I always watch and figured this would be good resources that I could be look fun, interactive, and I really like it so I wanted to know if you if you can sell me, your PowerPoint or just the original from one I create my own
Hi! I am another MA 1st grade teacher where we use Math in Focus and Fundations and we are learning all about Non-Fiction Books and working on informational reports! Wondering if you have a set of slides where you have the sight words/trick words/heart words. I have been wanting to incorporate the use of heart words into learning of the trick words.
I don’t think the skills part is teacher friendly with CKLA. It’s like a novel to me.
That's good to know!!
I have a 1st grader who is really struggling to get the hang of reading. Do you have any recommendations? My oldest (rising 4th grader) is an excellent reader so I feel like this is new territory. I’d love any advice you have! 🩷
