    19:51 This is no longer Ian's fault, in a podcast he said that originally he had the idea that Shadow, to try to save as many people as possible, would sacrifice himself, removing his inhibitory rings and fighting until the last of his energy.
    Sega instead asked for "corrections", due to the image of Shadow they were trying to push (in short, a moron very close to what he was in boom)

      1:06:09 Sonic's last statement does not eliminate the concept of freedom, it only states that Sonic brings consequences to freedom. It is like saying that in reality you do not have the option of smoking or not, because by getting lung cancer you lose your freedom, being incorrect, since you knew that by smoking this could happen.

      I don't think every flaw with idw can be blamed on SEGA, they told Ian that shadow can't use his inhibitors,
      but that doesn't mean he couldn't figure out a better way to handle Shadow,. I feel as though this could've worked better like instead of shadow being affected with a metal coating like everyone else.
      He's not affected rather healthy but the virus is in his mind trying to manipulate him by adapting.
      You could also have a reveal of the revaliation of Shadow being affected mentally and the heroes having to fight a Shadow with all of his abilities that's not a mindless zombie.

      I was confirmed Ian Flynn lied about that and the only thing sega said about shadow is no taking off inhibitor rings the personality is Ian Flynn fault which he wrote a good shadow before. So what happened what made him wright shadow so horribly he said the direction for shadow is what made him write him like that, but he was only written like that in sonic boom which was canceled and non-canon along with shadow is written and forces pretty good the only thing canon from boom is sticks nothing else

    I actually loved the new characters! Tangle and Whisper has amazing personalities and contrast each other and have good chemistry, Dr Starline is a great villain as he tries to live up to Eggman’s legacy and his own character, Surge and Kit represent Imposter Syndrome pretty well, and Jewel is all right

  • @drakewiz
    @drakewiz 4 месяца назад +27

    I came here for a review but, it feels like this is too bias to be a constructive criticism. The encounter between Starline and Sonic + Silver was a great way to showcase the character's personalities. Eggman got mad because killing him with a bomb like that is something he can do any day but he wants to beat Sonic his way. His motivations are good and clear, yet you minimize it all, ignored Silver's feat, ignored Dr. Eggman's reply to Starline, ignore Starline's motivations for winning and tactics...
    The philosophy of Sonic is also clear, freedom is given to all, but he will stop them if they choose to take away the freedom of others. He obviously wanted to save Surge, and gets mat because Surge preferred to die rather than being helped by Sonic. But you made up your mind about that characterization far before talking about issue 50. Sonic's view is flawed as hell, anyone can see that, but tackling by taking the worst interpretation and stripping its context is not the right way to tackle it.
    There are restrictions to IDW, sure, and it is far from a perfect comic or 'Masterpiece', but this doesn't feel like an impartial review at all.

    This is only my opinion, but this what I think. I never not liked the Metal Virus Arc, and it is one of my favorite stories, just because of it's dark tone and Sonic's existential crisis and conclusion. Scrapnik Island is probably my favorite miniseries in the franchise and I have enjoyed the supporting cast and world building, for my least favorite arc, I would say Test Run. I also don't view it as an adaption because it is now apart of the main story.

  • @CanaldoZenny
    @CanaldoZenny 9 месяцев назад +32

    My opinion on the IDW Sonic comic books is the most conservative. I've been a Sonic fan for 20+ years and I always interpreted Sonic games as episodes of a TV show, with more or less self contained stories. Each games is "in this episode of Sonic the Hedgehog", and some bigger games are the "movies" of Sonic. Unleashed is very much written and presented like a theatrical movie. 06 and Frontiers are movies.
    My reasoning being that Sonic is not designed to have a single continuous storyline. The games can have a general universe and rules to follow, and events may happen in a linear fashion, with some callbacks here and there. But Sonic works best when consumed in short busts. I think is the one of the reasons why in Sonic X (overseen by Yuji Naka and Sonic Team) many episodes of S1 and 2 were slice of life adventures, and Sonic was often absent or had little to say.
    I think the writters of IDW Sonic know this to some extent, because the story is divided in story arcs, ans after every story arc wraps the story sort of reset to the status quo. But it still is weird seeing Sonic speaking huge sentences, because in the games Sonic is a simple straightforward character, he speaks short sentences that are easy to understand or let his actions speak for himself.
    Archie Sonic get around this because Archie Sonic is not Sonic, the characters are not written like their game/japanese counterparts.
    I like the miniseries from IDW, and I believe this is a good format for a Sonic comic series: 2 or 3 issues series with self contained story.

      Prison is also an option. I don't think kill is the right choice. amnesia doesn't actually change your personality. you still act the same you just can't remember things.
      Idk if having eggman have amnesia was the best choice because it just lead to situations like this. Maybe starting the story after forces wasn't the best idea either or connecting it with the games because it leads to limitations on the story

    I find it funny how in Metal Virus many people blame Sonic for letting Eggman go when he lost his memory but never attempt to kill him once it's said and done. Thus making their points moot. Heck, it doesn't even need to be Sonic to do it. I think it is a similar problem with Joker in DC where they have him commit various heinous actions, but still have Batman or any other character do anything about it. Many because the character is too popular.

    • @storm_shadow-2107
      @storm_shadow-2107 4 месяца назад +4

      Yo pal an amnesiac Eggman is far from harmless. He still has to capacity to commit horrible things if a) he were ever pushed into doing so emotionally or b) Mr. Tinker ever recovered all his memories of being Dr. Eggman without help from Starline or Metal Sonic.
      Sonic should have know how dangerous it was to leave Mr. Tinker alone. Sonic didn't even need to imprison Tinker, but should have at the very least kept eyes on him. Having one of Sonics friends or even somebody from the resistance keeping surveillance on Tinker is the bare minimum comtingency Sonic should have decided on.
      After all, if Shadow could get his memories back then what's stopping Tinker from turning back into Eggman? Sonic has lost of experience dealing with Shadow's memory loss and how he was affected by it. Sonic should have known better than to be so nonchalant and careless. And yet, Sonic didn't ever bother taking and longterm precautions making any plans to contend with Eggman should he return.

      If batman killed the joker he would not be Batman. The true greatness of the character and his stories is his obsessive and borderline ridiculous childish vow to, at all costs, never kill anyone. Batman could never kill the joker or any other villain.
      Maybe Sonic has the same morals and ethics, and believes no one should make a decision on having anyone killed, no matter what they did. Doesn't make them incoherent or bad characters, it is simply their personality

    Ya know, this might be a little silly but Neo Metal should've been the main villain while Eggman stayed Tinkerer.
    It would make more sense for Neo Metal to release the virus and form a robotic army. He's heartless and cold. He doesn't need to care about the condition of the planet or the people on it plus he wouldn't have to worry about getting infected, in fact he could've used to gain a new form and he wouldn't bring back the Deadly Six because he knows (or should know) that they're tricksters.

    A monthly comic is _not_ the place for decompressed storytelling. I don't wanna wait five more years to resolve one-and-a-half more major storylines. It's funny, for a series that is all about how cool it is to be the fastest thing alive, the pacing is just grindingly slow.

    THANK YOU! I’ve BEEN saying that IDW Sonic is miserably OoC because he will say anything and everything that’ll make him sound morally correct, even if it contradicts something he previously said.
    He’s a motor mouth with none of the flair that made earlier iterations tick. There’s just no way that this is the same Sonic from Black Knight.

    I don't know much about Sonic as a whole, but I already heard many prefer some.. Archi (?) Book Series over the IDW one as well as plenty of different Community sized opinions fighting each other.
    But where could I best purchase the IDW comics?

  • @tonym.s7988
    @tonym.s7988 4 месяца назад +2

    For me the enjoyment of future comics will most likely rely on how much the comics are willing to play with the status quo, my favorite iteration of Sonic being Fleetway's for this reason, to the point it almost comes as a deconstruction.
    The plot point of badniks turning good gives some good potential for example. Imagine things like badniks being used to remodel the world into a post-scarcity society, ehich would also be kind of a middle finger to Eggman and having him trying to find more inventive ways of causing trouble than just good old supervillainy and you could even take into consideration the Deadly Six being far more dangerous than ever if they keep up with the integration of Badniks into society.
    And that's just fron a couple of panels of the last arc! Alas that totally depends on how much the mandates are being held up, as well as the writers decision regarding a mass shake up/evolution of the franchise, which admittedly Ian has expressed some interest in, even if the storyline state of the comic is somewhat 'superhero-lite'.

    This book has always been “there” for me. I’m completely caught up, and there’s been nothing that’s happened in it’s 5-year run. I especially don’t like Sonic in this. Having Sonic be someone who gives thought to any of his actions be it they bring about serious consequences or him doubt himself and think about morality is completely out of character. Remember that is supposed to be the same Sonic as the games. A character who has never cared about reformation or even justice. There’s tons of other issues I have, like the restrictions keeping the creativity so low that nothing can happen, making this book feel like a waste of time

      In Modern Sonic games (From Colors to Forces) Sonic was "moralistic" in every cutscene whenever we see him with the villain like Eggman in Forces and Colors or Zeti in Lost World. @@teriostheultimatefaker9148 I get that. But, the 2010s made a point to soft-reboot the series, with only having very superficial references to previous stories. That’s why now with Frontiers, the series has tried to re-establish the old status quo of the 90s and 2000s. However, this is really odd with IDW as many overt narratives from previous adventures are being referenced to firmly establish that those old stories happened and are relevant to our characters development. So with characters like Sonic and Shadow, they feel completely off, as there depictions in the books don’t like up with the current 2010s or the pre-2010s characterizations

      Your first sentence is how I feel. It's all fluff. There's nothing of importance or threatening to the reader. There were many moments where it did feel that way in the Archie comics AND had permanent consequences. Robitnik "dying", Bunnie getting roboticized, Sonic finding his parents, Tails being at odds with Sonic at times, the idea of bringing a that elderly man(Nate Morgan) to the fold for the animals despite the human vs animal war. There was REAL issues at hand, even personal and relatable issues.
      There was also character development that happened over a long period of time.....which does not happen in this comic. It either happens within a few issues or not at all. It's certainly never shown in the "middle", but only the beginning and the end of a relationship.
