Massive clean-up set at Mavericks pushed surfers into the rocks during a late-season swell on April 22, 2022. Jet ski driver Parker Guy called it, “one of the most hectic rescues” he’d ever seen. Various surfers lost their boards and several injuries were reported during the chaos. Big wave surfer Francisco Porcella was among those that got detonated: “Mavericks reminded us all who’s the boss out here.”

The Mavericks Awards is a digital video performance contest in which big wave surfers and videographers submit their best surf content from Mavericks from the entire winter season. Founded by Jeff Clark and Chris Cuvelier, our mission is to celebrate Mavericks and the brave men and women that surf it. Our values of respect, inclusion, equality, safety and environmental stewardship guide all our decisions and how we operate the Mavericks Awards.

Best thing about this video is I didn't end up watching some clown eating toast half asleep at 5am. Then driving to the beach. Then frothing while looking at waves with his buddies. Then some shitty music. Then finally 40 sec of watching dudes getting cleaned out.

Even with skis, spotters, etc., this place is scary as hell. How Jeff Clark could sit out there by himself, on a big day, cold misty morning...
Some people are just on a different level.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again is it really a good idea to not wear at least the fluorescent vest and maybe a helmet or hood so that somebody can actually see you when you need to be rescued ? It is very difficult to see someone that needs assistance when they are wearing a black wetsuit ….

I completely agree. It blows my mind to think about making a decision to jump in frigid water , infested with sharks, jagged rocks, to then paddle huge distance to try and catch some monster wave that could easily slam you into the bottom to a point where you may not make it to the surface, and do it alone. I mean, seriously. I can't even wrap my head around this feat.

Maybe this is a valuable lesson in risk and consequence, and very fortunately, no one paid an ultimate consequence. One of my most valuable lessons in the ocean was, if you don't think you can handle what's out there and coming, don't go out, because if you do go, you are alone and no one else should have to risk their lives to save yours.

I guess this is the issue with vests. If you pull your vest then you cannot get through any other waves so will get swept onto the rocks. So if a ski doesn’t save your ass you’re toast

Turned to ask the guy to my left what time it was, and a phantom wave popped up out of nowhere jacking right were we are sitting! It's not fun, and a little scary.
