- Dino’s Tinker Shed, S3 Ep11, Suzuki DR650 secondary air filter maintenance.
In this episode, I will show you how to service both a stock and Uni style secondary air filter on your Dr650 or other bikes that use a similar CV carburetor. Today’s cold opening is an homage to @Skidmate who have a great moto vloging channel here an RUclips and Emma just got her first DR650, if you like travel vlogs please check it out • Working on my DR650 .
The secondary air filter plays a big role in the overall performance of the DR650 and failure to keep it serviced and maintained can not only lead to carburetor damage but also poor throttle response and fueling. Fortunately, cleaning and servicing is easy, requires very few tools and only a bit of soap and water and some air filter oil to make it good as new.
I also show you two mods for this item, a stock filter mod and a replacement option, both will provide better protection and performance for your faithful steed.
I also talk about where you can get more information on this filter, I really like BushPig Performance’s write up on this item and here is the link if you want to read it.

Your videos are the best. I bought a Uni filter I am going to try, and I am also going to try the lawnmower foam idea on the stock unit.
A very useful video Dino. The secondary carby filter is often forgotten. Thankyou
This will be my next motorcycle for sure, and I didn't know about that filter. Now I know another maintenance about that precious motorcycle.
Dino..thank you for this..count me among the oblivious newly converted. Sincerely appreciate your videos.
Glad you enjoy the content and thank you for your comments
Dino
Great video, once again. Thanks Dino. I do business with Bushpig Performance and you're right : real pationned DR folks.
Thank you so much. I hope hope bush pig sees the video, I would like them to know they are appreciated. 🙂
Thank You Dino, another great information video. I haven't seen much if any info on that secondary filter, I appreciate your explanation of exactly what it is and does .
My pleasure, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for the comment.
Dino
Had no idea about this filter. Thanks so much
No problem! Thank you for the comment
Dino
Hi Dino, I just serviced my secondary air filter for the first time and your video was a great help. Thank you.
Great video Dino. I've done the same mod simply putting a piece of oiled sponge in the housing. Seems to work with no issues 👍 ATB Jason
Thank you for the comment Jason, great tip. There are so many different was to solve the same problem, thank you for sharing your method.
Dino
Excellent video Dino. I have been intending on doing that mod and your video is motivating me to get it done!
That's great, glad I can help motivate you.
Dino
Another gem. Bikes and riders thank you
Very good explanation of what this filter does. Not only this applies to the DR-650 but also to another bikes with a constant velocity. Working many years on bikes but some times you hardly take attention to this little piece. Thanks for this excellent information.
Thank you for the additional information, I love it when others add to the story, I have said it before, I am not an expert or even a mechanic so others knowledge is very helpful.
Thank you again and I am glad you enjoy the content.
Dino
Thanks so much for the information a bout the small filter for the carburetor. I had cleaned mine quite often but didn’t no about the little retaining screen as someone had been there before me. So it was not were it should be but it was under the filter. So this time after removing the filter I found the outer retainer and put back on the outside now the filter will stay in place. Plus I cut out extra filter out of a old filter from a old dirt bike filter. So thanks so much for this information. I have been a Auto Tech for 50 years and new never stop learning.
Thank you for the feedback, I was lucky enough to work with some very fine mechanics over the years and all of them loved to learn new things, I think they have a built in curiosity that never gets satisfied.
Thank you again.
Dino
@@DinosTinkerShedTy for the info on the filter. I bought a 2007 dr bk in 2014 I think it has the filter you purchased,I never cleaned it,now I will im like the rest clean the main filter but not the secondary ty so much,I'm getting on that soon..tks bud.
Another great video Dino! Even though Emma's DR doesn't have a hidden trumpet (pre '96), we still watched it all the way through and enjoyed every second of the video! Always makes us really zen!🙋🙋♂️🏍️🏍️
Right on, glad you enjoyed it. Can't wait to see Emma's DR on the road, looks like she is doing a great job on it.
Thank you for the comment,
Dino
Did the TST Industry for LED blinkers when I got home for work. Thanks for sharing all your great videos would have never known were to the get part's.
Thank you for the comment, and you are very welcome. It's fun making the videos and knowing other can use the information makes it all the better.
Dino
Good coverage of an often overlooked part of the bike. When i bought my DR, the previous owner gave me a box of parts and one part was the UNI secondary filter. Like you, he installed filter material in the original unit as he didn't like the effect of the UNI. I never tried the UNI as i have no issues with the way the bike works. I can only wonder if he may have over oiled the UNI and it caused him to have a funky working carb. Years ago, i replaced the filter in my Concours with a K&N and it wouldn't pull through the rev range. Come to find out, the filter was over oiled. Once i put the stock filter back in, problem solved. Just thought i'd pass that along. Cheers from NB!
Very good information Brad, I have ha d no I'll effects with mine but maybe this summer I will try an experiment and really oil it up to see if it impacts the performance. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Dino
I love your explanations. Well made. Thank you.
Just bought that uni filter for my DR! Thanks for the tip!
Glad I could help!
Dino
Thanks for the info Dino. I will add this to my to do list on my old DR.
You're more than welcome, easy task to do and provides some great insurance.
Dino
Yup, once again a great video. Will look at the Toronto bike show for this filter and other gear for the DR.
Right on, have fun. I will not be able to make it this year 🙁.
Dino
Great video as always. I've had only great experiences with Bush Pigs as well. Nice to have a great specialized store in Canada!
Bushpig for the win !! Great guys and great service !
Thanks for the feedback
Dino
Love your videos Dino.
So calm, informative and nicely made.
You seem like a relly cool guy to hang out with and drinke some cold beer.
Nice greetings from germany ✌🏼
Thank you so much I'm glad you enjoy the videos
Dino
Great video Dino! I'm currently installing the new Cogent suspension upgrades I recently bought from Bushpig Performance for my DR650. They were great guys to buy from and of course a huge bonus they are here in Canada 👍
Thank you for the comment, I'm glad Bushpig was able to help you out.
Dino
Great info thanks
Lol! One was easy, I used tool two for paint can opening too! 😂 so one point only. Loved this episode!
Thanks Kelly, Sue thought the same thing
If not cleaned reports Iv'e heard can be extreme bogging and loss of power. A lot can be said for women's stocking material, I have used that in past yrs on several engines. It acts as a pre filter of sorts, very breathable but stops bigger to medium particulants getting in. I used it on the outside of filters / boxes ect. . Great vid as usual Dino. Thanks.
Wow, what a great tip!, I will have to try that. I have heard the same issues about the bogging as you mentioned. @MOTODANS has said that he has experienced this first hand due to a dirty filter. Again, I love the pre filter idea, thank you for sharing.
Dino
Thanks! Good information.
You are very welcome, I am glad you enjoyed it.
Dino
Nice one Dino, something that would get over looked i reckon. I fitted a uni air filter ( not like your one ) for awhile but I found it would get dirty around twice as often as the stock one ( enough to cause running issues ) and it actually ended up falling apart after a few washes. I cut it up and have stuffed it into the end of the stock one like what you have done. Been going well since then, have a k & n style in a box like yours just haven't had a need for it yet.
Thank you for the comment Dan, very interesting on the additional cleaning, I think the one I have also gets dirty a bit more often, however I have not noticed any ill effects as of yet. I wonder why that is?
Thank you for the comment Dan
Dino
@@DinosTinkerShed Only thing i could think of was how it was completely open? Being that open and oil maybe attracts more dirt? I am not sure the uni filter one i have was a bit different to yours basically just a foam cylinder had no plastic end piece so it would just get completely covered.
Great video, always in my prayers, love ❤️ you
Great video!
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
Dino
Great vid Dino! I enjoy your detailed explanations and always learn something! Brad from New Hampshire
Thanks Brad, glad you enjoyed it.
Dino
My little foam filter just melted in my hands when it touched water 😂 im gonna rig something up now
😂
@@DinosTinkerShed I just cut a circle out of a clean area on my old air filter, works good for now
It is strange that my DR 650 RSE doesn't have this secondary air filter. Instead that hose from carburetor is connected to filter box, so it is using the main air filter. I am wondering if using standalone secondary filter would be beneficial.
Hmmm, that's odd. I would have thought the RSE would have shared the same filtration. I'm not sure how adding this secondary filter would impact performance, your bike may be tuned to use the current set up. Might be interesting to try though. Thank you for the information and comment. If you do try tood your bike, please let me know how it turns out.
Thank you for your comment.
Dino
@@DinosTinkerShed Thank for quick reply. I will give it a try, just out of curiosity.
@@jurajnovosad5580 very cool, I like your curiosity. Thanks again for the comment.
Dino
@@DinosTinkerShed Ive also heard that some people who do the air box mod, drilling holes and no snorkel have had problems with that secondary air filter being too close to the mod and its competing with the extra suction / robbing it causing extreme bogging. Just hear say on forums so just saying, something to think about. Good luck.
@@aussiefarmer8741 I have heard that to, it's one of the reasons I did not mod mine . Thanks for the information.
Dino
As a next mod for your bike, you could switch your regulator to a mosfet one. Trust me it's worth it.
I will have to look into this. Is it more durable than the standard regulator? Or is the power cleaner? Not familiar with this mod. Thank you for sharing.
Dino
@@DinosTinkerShed Yes, it is more durable and will boost your voltage. I run auxiliary led lights on my DR; with the stock regulator the battery voltage would drop to 12,3V with all the lights on. With this mod, it never goes below 13,2V and stabilizes around 14,7V with the lights off. And this voltage is available at idle speed. I bought a FZ8 regulator at a scrapyard on ebay, all in all, it cost me less than 60 €. The downside is you will need to relocate it as mosfet regulators are bigger.
@@war_duck2061 very interesting, great information. I will check it out. Thank you again for the idea and information.
Dino
Dino, that replacement filter you added (the green foam) seems to me like a lot more foam than stock, wouldn't it cause a reduction in air flow? I'm sure it would. But I'm thinking, considering the purpose of that airflow, it shouldn't matter?
Thank you for the question, I suppose it could, again, I went another route and used the UNI filter. I believe MOTODANS used a thick foam filter on his and he eventually changed it out, it was an aftermarket filter not a moded stock unit but you may be right. Thank you for the comment and information.
Dino
I don’t even own a DR650 (yet) 😂 but I really enjoy your videos 👍 I can see you own the Clymer service manual. Do you think it is better than the official Suzuki DR650 manual ? 🤔 I feel like the official Suzuki manual would mention the secondary air filter, no ?
The Suzuki manuals do have some errors so make sure to cross reference with corrected online versions available in PDF or the DR650 app for Android users.
Thanks 👍 glad to know there’s an online pdf version!! Free ? 😬
Thank you for the comment and the question. I do use the Clymers manual most often but I do have access to the factory service manual as well. as Gone Awry points out there are a few errors in the factory manual but there are amended versions available from what I have heard. Even in the factory manual I could not find much more than a part number for it. now it may be in an obscure area of the book that I did not look but I really did not find much on it. Again, thank you for the question.
Dino
Thank you for the information, much appreciated.

Bush Pig has free shipping over $299
Thanks for the tip
Dino
Hey Dino could you tell me how to adjust clutch on 1999 Kawasaki bayou 300 2x4? I’ve heard turn the screw forward till you feel tension then back till you feel tension and I’ve heard forward till you feel tension and back 1/8th so please help thanks.
Thank you for the question, Ill grab the manual for the 400 tonight and take a look and get back to you, I imagine they are similar.
Dino
I just remembered I did a video on this. the adjustment chapter is in the description and you can skip to it, I know this is a 400 but I am sure they are similar in set up. ruclips.net/video/Gxew3V3Nv8c/видео.html
Hope this helps
Dino
The 400 you did a video on was a 4x4 and it has 2 screws and is totally different
@@jessejones9207 hmm, I have never worked on a 300, so I figured they would be the same. Sounds more like a Honda 50 style with only one adjustment bolt
Even with Two bolts, the 400 is very similar to the Honda's I have worked on, only one of the adjustment bolts are actually used forost adjustments. That being said, I would look for an online manual to make sure it is set right. Sorry I can't be more help.
Dino
Ciao Dino , è molto strano che nel mio rse del 92 non ha nessun filtro . Eppure monta lo stesso carburatore 🤔. Tu cosa ne pensi ? Un saluto dalla Sicilia 🖐️
Thank you for the question, does the vent hose from the Carburetor lead into the main air box? It might have been a different design that they changed in 1996?
Thank you for comment
Dino
@@DinosTinkerShed ciao Dino , il tubo è agganciato sopra la scatola filtro, ma non dentro 🤔
that's odd, maybe they did not feel a filter was necessary at the time but added one in later with the 1996 SE.
Thank you for the information, it is always nice to learn new things.
Dino
Why doesn't a Suzuki Engineer just watch this and change their production line?
That would help for sure, put on the tm40 from the factory.
