One of my favorite Deep Purple songs. And to add what others have said about Jon Lord on the Hammond organ, not only was he extremely gifted and a total badass, he also often played through a Marshall stack, which you would normally associate with some very very loud rock guitar playing, laugh. And he often plays unison lines with the guitar and bass and so forth. So unless you know what to listen for, he does such a good job of blending in you often don't even know what's completely creating that total sound. But anyway, I love when he gets a chance to show off. I have played that kind of organ before and I tell you what, it is extremely difficult at first. You can be the best piano player in the world and sit down at this and you will suck until you spend quite a bit of time learning how to tame this wild beast.

Great job, just a tip: please listen to the live version on Made In Japan: the changes between organ, guitar, rhythm instruments and vocals are more pronounced, more dynamic and unique - the hallmark of Deep Purple this time phase.
Space Trucking is on Machine Head 4:33, on Made in Japan 19:53 (didn't hear it on purpose; but i remember the musical journey of the 5 band members and I will enjoy both versions tomorrow evening). Have fun!!!

That's Jon Lord on Hammond organ as the main instrument. I love how he starts it like it is at a funeral and then he proceeds to 'kill' it, as always! He is the best rock keyboard player IMO. Yes, it is Ian Gillan playing harmonica. It is even better on "Made In Japan" live later in the year. You are right, they don't miss. Even the b-side to "Never Before" i.e. "When a Blind Man Cries" is a classic.

Goldy McJohn in Steppenwolf really set the rock keyboard standard in the late 60s.
      Give em a listen
In fact, Silas should do Steppenwolf, as they coined the term "heavy metal".
      Way ahead of their time.

And Steppenwolf were not a heavy metal band, they were psychedelic rock, and there is no way on God's green Earth that Goldy McJohn set the Rock keyboard standard in the late 60's, he's not even top ten! So basically, everything you posted there is wrong except for Steppenwolf being something Silas should definitely check out.

The MADE IN JAPAN album is my favorite , I do believe it is the greatest rock n roll album ever , but that's just my opinion !! When you are done with this album , you should check out two more songs , Speed King , and the live version of Child In Time , from 1970 !! Those two are a must !!! But then there is Burn , Fireball , Rat Bat Blue ,,,, way too many to name here , Mandrake Root , I could make a long list !! It seems to me that after 1976 , they seemed to , , not be as hard , but then they also went thru a few line up changes !! Hey , keep on jammin , gotta love DEEP PURPLE !!!

"they never miss". Well sometimes they did but it didn't matter, they were so good it was hard to stay in your chair. Jon Lord was the personality of DP, the heavy and sometimes jazzy organ. Some of their tunes, like this one, sounded like intros to vampire movies. I saw this song as a commentary on what they used to call the "amotivational syndrome". Back in the day everyone was stoned on weed all the time so nobody felt like doing anything - lazy

This is Mark II Deep Purple, the classic lineup, and they definitely don't miss.
Mark I, the original, was pretty meh by comparison. They had a different singer and bassist, and were more psychedelic hippie rock. They had some decent stuff, but Mark II blows them away. That's when Ian Gillan became singer and Roger Glover bassist and they went in a hard rock direction.
Mark III Purple, with David Coverdale (later of Whitesnake) singing, had some bangers, but just wasn't really Deep Purple to me anymore. Much like when Ronnie James Dio joined Black Sabbath. Black Dio was great, but it didn't sound like Sabbath anymore. It sounded like Dio, with Black Sabbath as his backing band. That's just my subjective take, though.
I never really listened to Purple after Mark III.
When you want a break from albums again, here's a few suggestions:
    *Boston - "Foreplay/Long Time"
*April Wine - "Roller," or "I Like To Rock"
*ZZ Top - "Waitin' for the Bus/Jesus just Left Chicago"
*Judas Priest - "Victim of Changes"
    *Rolling Stones - "Gimme Shelter"
