It is nice to see young folks like yourself discovering the music I grew up with. Baby Boomers have done a lot of things, good & bad, but we certainly had greatest & most diverse music.
I’d go so far as to say it’s the best hard rock album of all time. Annoys me greatly when DP are pigeonholed as a heavy metal band. They’re not. Like Zeppelin, they are solidly blues based hard rock with a British gritty edge. One of my top 5 bands without any doubt.
@@JanEvoFahle Got to be honest, when I first listened to Shades of Deep Purple, The Book of Taliesyn & Deep Purple I didn't get it. I suppose I was expecting similar to Machine Head & In Rock. Hello, my friend! I'm an old deep purple fan! I was recently surfing the Internet and accidentally discovered people who were listening to different bands of different styles for the first time I'm from GEORGIA - it's in the south of the CAUCASUS! I was very lucky, like many classic rock fans of my generation, in that we were listening to this wonderful music at a time when all the great hard rock bands were just starting out.including, of course, Deep Purple! As soon as I listened to the song “Freeway Star” for the first time, I immediately fell in love with Deep Purple!. Of course, I listened to Led Zeppelin and Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, Nazareth, Queen and many other hard rock giants, but Deep Purple and Pink Floyd remained with me in my heart for the rest of my life! And now 50 years have passed since I and many of my friends first discovered the world of rock music and we still listen to them and listening to the rock music of those years you feel as young as in those years! why am I writing this, because I see that you are probably also a big fan of Deep Purple and I offer you a list of compositions from the Deep Purple repertoire that you may not have listened to, although if you are a fan of this group, you have probably listened to everything, and if not quite then Moreover, I advise you to listen to these compositions, which I chose according to my taste and experience. And you won’t regret it! I will also recommend this to other music lovers who are discovering Deep Purple for the first time. To be honest, to my regret, I do not know English and I am writing through a translator) and this is a list of songs that you probably might not have listened to, but you will get great pleasure if you listen to them. Remember this was Switzerland early 1972. In a cold and damp hotel closed for the winter, with the Rolling Stones mobile recording truck out in front on the lawn where the band couldn't reach it except for going out on the balcony, sliding down some drain pipes, skipping over to someone else's balcony, and trying to get higher-up again to then get down and run across the lawn to get inside the truck to have a bloody listen to what they just played. All songs have been recorded like that, except "Smoke On The Water". That song was recorded earlier and canned just before the police caught the band for making noise after ten PM. We're so bleedin lucky this album was released after all, after all the shenanigans and tricks and wheelin and dealin and the tapes still made it to a mixing panel and Martin Birch got his fingers on it and we got to listen to the damn thing. Glory be. Praise yourself lucky. I do.
The power of the Hammond B3 organ wielded expertly by the infamous Jon Lord. Lead guitar: Ritchie Blackmore, vastly underrated. Ian Paice owning on drums and Roger Glovers on point bass - what a lineup-!!
It is always seems to me that Blackmore played it on Gibson ES335 or something, cause I can hear the humbucker sound especially on the solo, but it was done on startocaster. Nice reaction, thanks.
I can't argue with that and can I take this opportunity to Thank You for your wonderfully entertaining years as a National Hunt Jockey and I see from your Wikipedia and this comment that your, er, Organs, are, clearly, still intact:) "Eddie Hardy (born 10 June 1937) is an Irish equestrian. My brother used to play Deep Purple all the time in his bedroom next to me. I wasn't that much into it then but I'm heavy into it now. I was a cholo back then and listen to soul oldies and R&B.
I see that by the end of the song, you are suitably impressed at the quality of the musicianship here. I was too and still am 50 years later. Deep Purples MACHINE HEAD is a must have EPIC album. Rich with mood, texture, subtlety, surprises, and GRIT. These guys were serious rockers. Richie Blackmore was such a popular guitarist among guitar geeks that Fender released a signature series Richie Blackmore white Stratocaster with his radically scalloped fretboard. I held one back in the day but that scalloped fretboard was way the F outta my league.
THANK GOD U ARE DOING THE ORIGINAL FIST this is hot i remeber many wild drug ridden hippie parties with this blasting away and EVERYONE danced wildly back then.......i sure as fuck did!!! hell i saw just about all the greats the acid was hard back then great memories my friend
Cool to see you enjoy that so much. Others have mentioned some great ones, “child in time“ is by far their most reacted to song, for good reason. “Burn” is from 1974 with two different singers. Studio version should be heard first before a live version. A few somewhat deep cuts that are excellent are “Bloodsucker“; “No One Came“; “Rat Bat Blue“. For some cool Ian Gillan singing, same guy as here, “Strange Kind of Woman” from “Made in Japan”. I could go on but I’ll stop there.
Interesting bit of trivia : Ian Gillian , the lead vocalist , played Jesus in the original Broadway performance of Jesus Christ Superstar, and his vocal work was beyond incredible. There's a clip on RUclips of him singing "Gethsemane", that showcases his vocal range, along with those high screams that make your hair stand on edge...
I'm sorry Lisa, but you're wrong here :-) Ian Gillan did the original album version in 1970. Jeff Fenholt did the stage version on Broadway in '71, Paul Nicholas on West End in '72 and Ted Neeley did the movie version in '73. Gillan was asked by Webber/Rice to do both the musical and film but declined due to obligations to Deep Purple.
Deep Purple had a lot of different line ups through the years, but the line up responsible for their rise to major acclaim is the one on this Machine Head album and on the previous album Deep Purple in Rock. These are the albums that will give you Top Purple imho. Personally, Machine Head was their peak, again, imho.
Check out Speed King from their Perfect Strangers DVD concert. You will watch a duel between the keyboardist and the guitarist. There's also a solo with the keyboardist too.
They recorded lots of great songs from '80 ,'90 and '00 too...(Purplendicular Is a wonderful record from the '90 for example). Anyway Jon Lord did some of the best hammond solo ever...

It's been said by a lot of influential people in the music business that the best ROCK music was created between 1967 and 1975 ?????
The way music used to be. I loved growing up in this era.
One of my absolute favorite albums growing up still enjoy every time I come back to it 🙂👍
One of the best albums of the early seventies hands down. You may enjoy "Pictures of Home" from this same LP. Another banger for sure
