Tip from a pro-spray one light mist coat. let it sit for 20-30 mins then spray a full coat. The mist coat will help the full coat "hang" better and not run.Keep it up!!
Thanks Ben, I know this is a year later but just read your tip. I'm painting my 8mx6m tin shed in Spring, I'll give it the mist coat first, handy to know from a pro. Yes I mean it.
I painted my truck with the same paint over 2yrs ago a it still looks great.i found when wet sanding it for clear coat this paint is tuff as nails...great job
I am researching all this to paint a metal shed (new not rusty) and this is the most detailed and helpful information. I felt overloaded before (never used oil based paint) but now I feel like I can tackle this. Thank you for showing us the details of the paint and the sprayer. That’s extremely helpful and I’m grateful to all RUclipsrs who do this to help people like me!!!!
I did it! It looks good! I used the same color on my shed. Thank you so much. I referenced this video a few times. The information was very clear. I used a $30 sprayer from Harbor Freight.
@@cindyboxer1184 How is yours holding up? Did you use a primer? I'm having a new metal shop building installed but I'm unhappy with the limited colors they offer. I was thinking of ordering it in white and am researching how to paint it the color I want. This video was so helpful but I'm also curious how it has held up on your new building. Thanks!
Thank you. We might be buying an older mobile and the underpinning is metal. It looks rough. This gives me and idea about repainting it to make it look nicer.
Rustolem 7769 primer. Oil base enamel by rustoleum. Rex beti electric spray gun, 500 watt motor. $60 Amazon. Use 3.0 nozzle for thicker paint. Mineral spirits to clean up afterwards. Take nozzle off and clean all components into bucket of mineral spirits.
the side you were spraying in long sweeping motions but the front you were making short quick strokes. I bet you were putting on quite a bit more paint with the over lap motion on the front with the quick strokes that were not as wide.Thats where the extra paint went, maybe? Looks good in the end though.
Does your spray gun allow the tip/air nozzle to rotate 90 degrees? That would allow you to spray long vertical strokes and use the same amount of paint as each other side. Those short strokes chewed up a lot more paint.
Can you use that electric sprayer about a foot away from building in case you are on a ladder spraying the side of your house because my house has metal siding
Sorry to get off subject, bit next time you service your FW15 could you please talk about/show all grease points etc. Found your channel a couple years ago because of your FW15. Enjoy the videos, thanks.
@@HandyGuy2016 That's all I really wanted to know. I think I'm going to go the same route you did. Seems like the best way to go. Thanks for the reply.
@@HandyGuy2016. Thank you for the information and video showing your work. I see this is a video from 3 years ago. Just wondering if it is still holding up well? I am concerned about painting galvanized steel and the paint not adhering long term. Maybe a follow up video showing the building and any areas of concern. Thank you.
Has there been any peeling or scratch off issues ? I have read that painting over galvanized metal without first using a bonding primer leads to to a lack of paint adhesion. I have a large machine shed that is galvanized metal siding ( built in the 50's ) that I would like to spray

This is one of the best, most straight forward videos I've found since researching this subject. Thank you for uploading. Very helpful!

You made this look easy. It looks great!
Thank you
This is fantastic. Thank you for sharing what kind of paint to use.

I did use primer, but only on the spots where the galvanized coating had come off. It's holding up excellent!
I’d mask it off, paint a 36” bottom strip wainscot in gloss black & the corner trim boards in gloss black. That would make it look super classy.
Looks great! I have been pretty impressed with the rustoleum professional paints. The spray cans are pretty decent too
Thank you, I am very happy with it.
Enjoyed watching this (subscribed!) You made it look easy (and fun!). Thank you!
Awesome 👍 Thank you 😊

I liked the idea of not acting like your a professional. Honesty first. Great job and thanks
Thank you
Really nice job, I'm inspired to do something like this
Thank you
Looks good to me
😊
Okay! I think I can do it. I need to paint my metal building. I’m going to tell my husband I got this
You do got this! 😎
Nice job
Looks good
Thank you
Thanks. This is what we will be doing.
Looks good what a difference
Thank you, I am pleased with how it turned out.

Damn better then so called high priced pros! It's only a shed no need to pay thousands if it's oil based

Yes it does
Great job. I have a very similar application coming up. Did you spray or brush the rust primer?
Brushed
Looks good a drop cloth might of helped a little
You got a video of how the paint dried ? Is it really glossy . I ask because I was about to go with the same gray for my metal shop
It has a dull finish, like eggshell or satin would. Mine is in the sun most of the day and it doesn't have a glare from sun reflection.
Thank You! Great ideas and use of reclaimed siding. How did you seal the old nail holes?
Silicone caulk
@@HandyGuy2016 Thanks
How did you prep the rusty spots before you primed? Good job by the way!
Just cleaned them with a pressure washer and used a rust converting primer
Other than doing a few rust paint spots how did you prep the building to hold the paint?
Pressure washing with dish soap.
Looks great. How old was the old
Paint?
Not sure. It was salvaged from an old building roof replacement.
Can you use that electric sprayer about a foot away from building in case you are on a ladder spraying the side of your house because my house has metal siding
Yes, it has pretty good reach as long as it's not too windy
Okay well I looked them up and none are available
I'm trying to paint over corrugated iron that is red in colour. Do you have any tips on how I can go about painting it.
I would have to research it first, every material is different.
At 5:21 is how many feet is covered per gallon
Is that sprayer easy to clean get all tha oild base paint?
Yes it's easy to clean up.
Sorry to get off subject, bit next time you service your FW15 could you please talk about/show all grease points etc. Found your channel a couple years ago because of your FW15. Enjoy the videos, thanks.
Good idea, I will do that soon.
Thank you.
I will have a video on it by the end of the month. Thank you for watching and for the idea.
Could you use this same paint and technique on a metal roof?
I don't see why not.
Can you do an update video on how the paint job is holding up?
I will try to but it looks as good as the day it was first done.
@@HandyGuy2016 That's all I really wanted to know. I think I'm going to go the same route you did. Seems like the best way to go. Thanks for the reply.
How has it lasted? I really need to paint my shop but I'm so scared it won't stick well and will look worse!
It still looks fresh, no issues.

Thank you.
A friend, contractor said to always clean metal with vinegar , will make the paint last much longer ??
I have not heard that, but I could believe it.
How did you prep the metal for paint in the non primer areas?
Pressure washed with soapy water and rinsed clean.
@@HandyGuy2016 ok thank u
Looks like while the paint was wet it was a blue/grey. Was that the case once it dried?
Yes it lightened up slightly when it dried.
@@HandyGuy2016 so it stayed a bluish grey?
@@miggys7 Yeah, it's "battleship grey"

It's holding up great, no issues so far.
@@HandyGuy2016 Is there any issues with the paint peeling now over the galvanized metal?
Nope, it's holding up great!
Did you
Sand the rust off and primer the spots
Yes I did
Great work!
Would you think you could do the roof
Don't see why not
Did you paint the roof & if so did you paint it before or after the rest of the building?
The roof metal was new, so I didn't paint it.
Would this work on a metal roof ?
I don't see why not, in fact this was originally roof metal.
Awesome thanks
How much paint did you use
4.5 gallons
I'm guessing I will need 10-15 gains then for the size of my building. Did you find it cheaper than 39 a gallon?
Bet you're happy you did this before the price of paint went insane...
Definitely
Only thing I see is maybe wear a mask or respirator... looks great!
Good point
Looks good
Thank you
Nice job
Thank you
