CGI animation CAN look good, but it takes a lot of work, skill and artistic vision to correctly pull it off. It's just way too early for this studio to tackle something as iconic as Ghost in the Shell right now.
The new Lupin the third movie, for example. Based on the trailer, that has Pixar level animation. It looks great. I doubt anyone would be complaining if this show had that kind of animation.

I don't mind the animation so much. The voices and characters are all immediately recognizable, despite looking different under scrutiny, so it's perfectly capable of conveying the story. I've only seen the first 3, so I can't speak to how good the story is, but I have noticed how much time they waste on unimportant scenes or even frames within a scene.
When I saw 'Netflix' in the name, I was like 'Oh, no, why?'. From this mindset of placing my expectations way low, the first season didn't feel that terrible to me, but I have to agree with basically all of your points. When I look at other remakes and reboots that turned great franchises into cesspools, this one isn't the worst I've seen and is actually watchable. Sadly, it does fall short. I remember my fascination the first time I watched through GITS SAC, possibly the most intense TV experience I ever had. 2045 ain't it, that's for sure.
I disagree,, the show is good and worth watching. The story is complex and step by step driven. 1. A few former Section 9 members work as mercenaries in a post world War type scenario where companies tried to implement sustainable war and failed. 2. The team is forcibly recruited to run a mission to "resuce" a captive. 3. Finds out their actually there to capture an individual that is well beyond their capabilities to bring in alive. 4. This brings in the concept of whats called "post humans" who are physically stronger and extremely efficient at hacking making them very deadly. As a big fan of the series the animation was not great but the story was absolutely is.
I agree with this comment, but i do like animations. It's kinda reminding me Appleseed, yea Appleseed have better looking Animations. But still i do like SAC_2045 animations. And story is really great. And i'm fan of the series too. I can recommend.

2045 is everything Arise wasn't: smart, funny, entertaining, thought-provoking, and above all, a well-conceived and logical progression in the SAC series. The only genuine fail in 2045 is the bizarre choice to (badly) CG the characters.
Smart - how? Funny - you mean, unintentionally funny, right? Thought provoking - it literally has less philosophy in it than ARISE, but ok. Well conceived - I wouldn't call a cash grab well conceived. Logical progression - All the characters look younger, and the show is no longer about stand alone complexes like its title implies, but that's logical? Sorry, but I just don't see where you're coming from.
i don't see it as funny or thought provoking. its a fine plot if a little bit over the top. It lacks world building and the hyper detailed plots we are used to. but calling this terrible as the video does is a bit excessive.

i watched both season and i think its not that bad actually ,3DAnimation is good for me, Some small detail like not putting finger in the trigger when not ready to fire they made it too, light, shadow, really strange sometime ,and i like explosion so much ,many of OST dont really sound like GITS OST it could be ,for SAC2045 its difference like a "badass" cool"EDM" xD and the story i thought its was good but when i notice about how long is it take to get into the main story, Yes yes its bad but i can enjoy it while watching each of EP SS1 may not like what 1995-2016 GITS story was but in SS2 its hard to understand, its psychology ,its confusion ,Im not good eng so i didnt watcg ur video so i rated GITS sac2045 7/10 for ss1 and 8/10 for SS2 or 7.5/10 for both
Yeah, it caught my eye, but after the bank robbery episode, I gave up on it and switched to the shorter movie version cut to just be done with it. Wish I'd seen this first and never bothered with it at all.
I would like to mention that there is also a recent manga adaptation of ghost in the Shell that's called the Human Algorithm I would like to know your thoughts on it if you have time to read it
omg I watched 5 minutes of the first episode and put it down...I thought I was watching a Saturday morning cartoon marketing a toy and comic book franchise.
The title song of this series basically spell it out why this series was made *Money make the world go round*. And there is a lot of money in a quick cash grab series while selling newly designed qt314 Motoko figurines.
I was very excited to find out there was some new GITS shit out, only to be massively let down after the shitty intro and the first five minutes of the unwatchable ps2-like cgi.. turned it off immediately. What a disappointment.
I own almost EVERY iteration of GitS. To include the ScarJo movie. Which, while POORLY cast and explained, was an ok take on the property when you look past the blatant whitewashing. (In fact, I'd argue that had they bothered to cast Japanese...or at the very least Asian...it could have been a far better movie.) That being said, while Ghost is far and away my favorite anime of all time, I'm going to lump this 2045 version in the same company with 2.0 and Innocence; things in my mind that never happened. But, then again, I knew what a train wreck it was going to be after I saw the reveal trailer. We all did. If Netflix wanted to continue the franchise in a low-cost CG manner, they would have done better just to continue the rebooted story in Arise. (Yes, I'm one of its defenders.) It looked FAR better with its 2D/CGI visual blend and, as you stated, it contained a better written prequel story. It's also a shame that they decided to branch out the story culturally by adding what was the franchise's first Black main character.........then doing absolutely nothing with him, not developing his character, and awkwardly writing him out of the story a handful of episodes in. Why even bother with this pseudo-representation if you were just going to disregard this token character in the first place? This show has ALL the problems.
I totally respect and understand your opinion. However, I went in with very low expectations, considering 99% of all CGI anime is utter garbage. That's probably why I think I enjoyed it. The bar for me was very low as a CGI anime, rather than the high bar of Ghost in the Shell. Of course it can not be debated that the originals were far better. As out of place the pink haired girl was, I really liked her. Maybe I'm just infected by current day moe weabooness. Love your vids.
I'm not going to lie, my bar wasn't exactly high either with the animation putting me off, but even so, I expected it to be better than Arise, and it wasn't even that. I would watch Arise any day over this, because at least Arise has really good action in it.
Personally I thought it was a great story I enjoyed it, it had less exposition compared to the original SAC, and more action also. Down side I hated the music used for the intro & the 3d Cgi I'm not a fan of the new look for major, however her look slowly grew on me, her original SAC look was far better. Glad the original voice actors were back that was a plus for me. I'm looking forward to a 2nd season since s1 was left on a clifhanger
Clearly the major looking younger was a stylistic choice and regardless, it don't matter cause she uses a prosthetic body so she wouldn't looked aged to begin with lol I feel like ppl are nit-picking. Maybe people’s expectations were too high, going into it I never thought the sequel would be as good as the original. I honestly don't think anything I.G productions puts out will be better or on the lvl of the original sac, the writing and the deep philosophical commentary about politics and society is unmatched. And one of the best written shows in all of media This sequel isn't as deep or philosophical but the story is still intriguing and appealing imo. Just the nostalgia of seeing section 9 back together and doing missions bought me back to my younger days watching this show in the middle of the night on adult swim.
That's the thing - you only like it because of nostalgia. Take away that nostalgia. Look at this show and judge it as if it was something completely new, detached from any franchise. Is it good? The answer for many is no. And of course the character designs are a stylistic choice. Just because a stylistic choice is made doesn't mean it's a good one. The character designer got famous on Instagram for making very pretty, but generic looking, anime a fan art. Stylistically, his characters are more fitting for some Kyoani production, not a dark, dystopian sci-fi series. Furthermore, trying to pass off any criticism of how they fucked up the aesthetic of GitS as "nit-picky" is so asinine. Film is a visual medium. When you have a franchise that is popular in part because of it's dark, gritty sci-fi visuals (and by extension, character designs), and the series changes to an aesthetic incongruent to its larger appeal, that is a very valid and broad critique of the entire work. It's why people are freaking out over the new Spongebob prequel. The series has an aesthetic that its famous for, and the new iteration goes against that. There's nothing nitpicky about that (especially when said character designs contradicts continuity that directly applies to it). If you like the show, okay, but don't try to hand wave away criticism of it by sticking your head in the sand and calling everything a nitpick. That's how you become the embodiment of the meme "You're nitpicking and biased. I win. bye, bye."
Randall the Vandal no need to get defensive I never said you were wrong for your opinion nor did I dislike the video. I thought you made some valid points in your criticism. I would much rather it have been 2D as opposed to 3D. However I personally didn’t mind the stylistic direction of this sequel. IMO the original SAC wasn’t nearly as dark in tone as the original movie. “Stand alone complex” was its own separate thing. As a whole it was very nuanced with many different tonal shifts with each self contained episode. Some episodes centered around the tachikoma and were much lighter in tone. Where as others were dark and gritty like you said. The nuance of the original show is what made the series unique and what made the world feel so real on top of everything else. Like you mentioned in your review they could’ve done a lot more with 2D, the character models could’ve been better. But as I stated before my expectations going into this wasn’t as high. So I suppose that’s why I’m not as disappointed as most ppl.
@@privateerliew5177 I'm aware that she could put herself in a younger body, yes, but the show never justifies why she would do this (especially when this is in the same continuity of the OG show, where she clearly had a prefrence for one particular body unless it was necessary to change shells for covert operations. You also can't defend it as being part of the art style change because the rest of the cast look more or less the same as they did in the original show), and the reason is because it was only done to make the character more marketable to the coomer "cute girl" obsessed neckbeards of today. Clearly someone doesn't know how marketing works.
I am vietnamese and also a fan of GITS I think everyone should stop arguing and try to take it seriously Don't give it up because it's made of 3D, sac 2045 has done a great job of starting 3D And I think its plot is very good I really like sac 2045 and its plot I hope everyone will gradually like it
"Ghost in the Shell was an anime you can show to people who don't watch anime", That maybe made sense then. But anime is not something to be ashamed anymore. I find it very difficult to consider having anime characters in anime as a sin.
This was such a bummer....I gave up after episode 2. The animation sucked but I could have dealt with it if the rest was done well...but it wasn't...none of it.
I’m going to tell you why you think it looks like a pre-rendered cut scene from play station two Because the models use a shader that makes them look like anime were you expecting realistic models that’s the only way I can see these models being badAs an animation student I don’t see how these movements feel weightless looking at those smoke fx alone must’ve taken so long to get right looking at the scene With the fire fight alone looks great the reason you think it’s bad because you’re used to it to the style if they shot it into 2D style camera it would look god-awful because you weren’t utilizing the 3-D well I’m sorry if I’m complaining about this it’s just an injustice that people think that this is a terrible show because they don’t know what good 3-D animation looks like I work with Maya By the looks of it it’s using the same program and that shit is impossible to work through the UI sometimes to get something like this must’ve taken months of work for each set piece
The story isn't that good either. What is the difference between "post humans" and any other "race" that invades earth and humans need to unite to survive? Nothing. It's an old, cliche, boring storyline on the same ballpark as "prophecy" and "the chosen one".
Meh im hopeful for the season 2. However i agree on the fact.. the main store plotline took to long to get into (like half the season) and the idea that the threats to section 9 or the main characters isnt THAT real or bad. but i can look past the animation having watched shit like Red vs Blue newer seasons and can say that this isnt that bad....or playing games like Metal gear Solid 3 which had a naked MC kart-wheeling around the level. I feel like to much opinion comes around the animation/artwork style that people are to quick to negatively review this show. However to each his own, thats not to say that with the stories plot finaly being the center of attention, that we wont finally see a more "direct" story to the show and better story telling and character development, now that the idea of dispersing the characters around the GINS world and then trying to bring them back together is out of the way. I feel like this story should better be judged after its full completion and not practically half way through.
If they wanted the audience to judge the story as a whole, maybe they should have made a movie and not a TV show. They are not owed audience attention.
@@RandalltheVandal It is what it is, i have high hopes for the second season becasue i rewatched it and saw some moments that i think were not addressed, Like the team realizing that Arimaki has his own end game goal for getting section 9 rebuilt. Theres also the Tachikoma that plugged into the PC at the base where the one Post Human was held, he said "This subject should do nicely" so i think its possible this Tachikoma could become a key story asset later on. While this story is a bit..lacking where the threats arnt necessarily towards section 9, and theres less back door political shti being shown with Arimaki just saying "ill pull some strings" and something happeneds. In the old show it showed alot of his interactiosn with many public officials. This story is driven more that the threat is towards the world and i think they just convey that threat to be any real issue well. Thats why i believe now that all the pieces are moving and all the characters are where they need to be now that the story can unwrap more,. It just sucks they didnt give more for this season and almost seams like they just didnt give this a little more time to bake...especially with facial animations. Like when John Smith said the Majors name, and she turned back and looked really pissed and i honestly felt like "oh you fucked up Smith" but her face just didnt express that shear anger they wanted to show.
you're a bit hard on this. i was never bored by it. yea i wish they could go into vastly more detail about "sustainable war" and stuff. but despite that lack of worldbuilding i enjoyed it and want more
Good video my friend ^.^ I’ll admit I don’t know much about Ghost In The Shell but wow that animation was kinda bad. The main character is cute though lol
While I'm not a fan of the whole doing everything in two parts, I really think we need a second season before we can really judge the overall story and its philosophical depth.
Bad series it just leeched off the name of ghost in the shell , and if you know anything about gits sac the original the ending has no depth because she definitely unplugged that clone of individual 11 and laughing man mix
I really don’t get what peoples beef is the CGI the reason that CGI Anime fail is because they try to shoot it like it’s 2d they don’t do that here they literally make use of the 3-D the way it should be and that is why it’s utilized well the story is brilliant and the 3-D allows them to do things that they couldn’t before and allows even the dumb voice actors to articulate their voice is more The difference is that it utilizes the CG well opposed to a show that does not That is the reason why the CG looks so good because they don’t try to make it look 2d I’ll because everyone expects that even when the seat in front of them they don’t understand how well it is shot speaking as an animation student by the way that utilize the 3-D environment and the camera to a level that I had not anticipated and it is gorgeous And another thing about the animation there’s less animation in a in 2d Drawn style Then 3-D what ghost in the shell have done is push the boundaries of animation like they did all those years ago Showing us that there is merit in 3-D but people have too much of a stigma around it to even bother giving it a chance people just say they look ugly because they’re 3-D how I don’t see it the models look gorgeous
I don't think you are an actual GITS fan, not one bit. I am not convinced here, you just found your topic to create content from thin air. Here is why: the animation in this film is actually terrific to say the very least, if you even know what ANIMATION is. The problem is just wrong approach with graphics and that's all. But again, that doesn't mean much, as the story is on par with everything that GITS was about in the long past - it have great story telling, great composition of world and characters, the film now more focused on other members of a team, instead of mostly Motoko - and it's the best part of it. Music is absolutely amazing, even if it's not Yoko Kano, but i can tell a good music, when it's really good - and this one is good. It's actually on par with all GITS entries, and so does voice acting, which is even more important for this series, than visuals. There is only one big issue for me - is that it ends on a cliffhanger just the moment it became more and more intriguing. That was bad, but only that. So, sorry to say, but you are not a fan. It's just yet another attempt at creating content around controversial as it's more safe to talk about something controversial. With time people will love this show more and more. It was always that way with every GITS. Even ARISE got it's deserved love in the end.
You're implying that there's something wrong with 2D animation, as if 3D is an upgrade. Even if that's not the case, there's no reason to change something just for the sake of change. Regardless, the problem isn't that it's 3D CG, it's that it's bad 3D CG. so the entire argument is moot.
this is horrible, I can't even finish watching your video, this is how much this adaption is making me angry...Netflix is quantity over quality...they don't care about great content ..just making a lot and see what sticks....thinking about it, they might be the ones that ruin cinema forever...
Complete trash. Anyone can cherry pick scenes to pick their review. For CGI, the animation is leagues better than most if not all CGI anime. People need to learn to watch shows for themselves. The animation in the fight scenes and just overall in this rendition is actually impressive when you’ve seen examples of other CGI in anime. You’re doing a real disservice to those who worked their ass of creating this series.
Wait... I didn't watch this show for myself? Then who watched it for me? Please give me an example of cherry picking in this video. There's already a handful of CGI anime that look leagues better than this. Land of the Lustrous? Beastars? The new Lupin III movie? i watched both season and i think its not that bad actually ,3DAnimation is good for me, Some small detail like not putting finger in the trigger when not ready to fire they made it too, light, shadow, really strange sometime ,and i like explosion so much ,many of OST dont really sound like GITS OST it could be ,for SAC2045 its difference like a "badass" cool"EDM" xD and the story i thought its was good but when i notice about how long is it take to get into the main story, Yes yes its bad but i can enjoy it while watching each of EP SS1 may not like what 1995-2016 GITS story was but in SS2 its hard to understand, its psychology ,its confusion ,Im not good eng so i didnt watcg ur video so i rated GITS sac2045 7/10 for ss1 and 8/10 for SS2 or 7.5/10 for both
Yeah, it caught my eye, but after the bank robbery episode, I gave up on it and switched to the shorter movie version cut to just be done with it. Wish I'd seen this first and never bothered with it at all.
And I think the backflip and shuffle dance were intentional to show how the post humans can dodge bullets without even trying
I would like to mention that there is also a recent manga adaptation of ghost in the Shell that's called the Human Algorithm I would like to know your thoughts on it if you have time to read it
Also it has no connection to the new show what's the ever
The only Ghost in the Shell manga I've read is the original chapters from the late 80's. I have yet to read any sequels or spin-offs.
omg I watched 5 minutes of the first episode and put it down...I thought I was watching a Saturday morning cartoon marketing a toy and comic book franchise.
PS2 is a little harsh, but I agree it looks like a video game, and not a triple-A one.
This show is just sad. I won't even bother watching it. Since the live action movie they've just been screwing up this amazing story.
I'm looking forward to a 2nd season since s1 was left on a clifhanger
they samefaced my girl. she was more intimidating when she was waling around in a leotard.
And one of the best written shows in all of media
This sequel isn't as deep or philosophical but the story is still intriguing and appealing imo.
@@CowabungaBreezyTV nah hes like that, I think he just described himself perfectly lmao
Bruh how can the major become older if shes full prosthetics this guy don't think does he?
So she can't age forwards, but inexplicably aging backwards is fine? You just blow in from stupid town?
@@RandalltheVandal clearly someone don't know how prosthetics work
@@privateerliew5177 I'm aware that she could put herself in a younger body, yes, but the show never justifies why she would do this (especially when this is in the same continuity of the OG show, where she clearly had a prefrence for one particular body unless it was necessary to change shells for covert operations. You also can't defend it as being part of the art style change because the rest of the cast look more or less the same as they did in the original show), and the reason is because it was only done to make the character more marketable to the coomer "cute girl" obsessed neckbeards of today. Clearly someone doesn't know how marketing works.
I was trying to give it a chance up until agent Smith made his entrance.
I am vietnamese and also a fan of GITS
I think everyone should stop arguing and try to take it seriously
Don't give it up because it's made of 3D, sac 2045 has done a great job of starting 3D
And I think its plot is very good
I really like sac 2045 and its plot
I hope everyone will gradually like it
I gave it a try and basically had to stop 10 minutes in. They whole thing just feels so lifeless.
I loved it.
Me too. This review, and much of the hate is "nastolgia-goggle".
@@wheeltrouble this is what judging the book by its cover looks like. I really enjoyed it especially when it picked up after episode 6.
I’m going to tell you why you think it looks like a pre-rendered cut scene from play station two
Because the models use a shader that makes them look like anime were you expecting realistic models that’s the only way I can see these models being badAs an animation student I don’t see how these movements feel weightless looking at those smoke fx alone must’ve taken so long to get right looking at the scene With the fire fight alone looks great the reason you think it’s bad because you’re used to it to the style if they shot it into 2D style camera it would look god-awful because you weren’t utilizing the 3-D well I’m sorry if I’m complaining about this it’s just an injustice that people think that this is a terrible show because they don’t know what good 3-D animation looks like I work with Maya By the looks of it it’s using the same program and that shit is impossible to work through the UI sometimes to get something like this must’ve taken months of work for each set piece
Story: 4/5
Animation: 2/5
The story isn't that good either. What is the difference between "post humans" and any other "race" that invades earth and humans need to unite to survive? Nothing. It's an old, cliche, boring storyline on the same ballpark as "prophecy" and "the chosen one".
I recommend to you guys watched the movie version not the series.
The animation looks like a nick jr cartoon
I agree it's trying too hard doing western fan service but its totally empty...
@@RandalltheVandal well I’m not saying that they are. I’m just saying they probably are just did what they could afford.
@@L33T_Taco also probably not true but ok
Like when John Smith said the Majors name, and she turned back and looked really pissed and i honestly felt like "oh you fucked up Smith" but her face just didnt express that shear anger they wanted to show.
you're a bit hard on this. i was never bored by it. yea i wish they could go into vastly more detail about "sustainable war" and stuff. but despite that lack of worldbuilding i enjoyed it and want more
What do you think about the season 2 ? because to me most of your critics are solve in the season 2.
Didn't watch it and probably won't
Good video my friend ^.^ I’ll admit I don’t know much about Ghost In The Shell but wow that animation was kinda bad. The main character is cute though lol
Thanks, lex
I am sometimes seeing the models spaz and wig out.
Holding hope for the new Akira Movie / Mini-Series!
That's hoping against reality bro.
The CGI looks like a PS2/PS3 game
i like gits sac 2045 but NGL its so true in first time meeting tokusa xD
While I'm not a fan of the whole doing everything in two parts, I really think we need a second season before we can really judge the overall story and its philosophical depth.
Um, no. Even if the second season does a total 180, the first season is so philosophically barren that it drags the entire experience down.
wheres logan
Agree with you on many points but not on how characters never looked anime? Lol what
Bad series it just leeched off the name of ghost in the shell , and if you know anything about gits sac the original the ending has no depth because she definitely unplugged that clone of individual 11 and laughing man mix
SHE LOOKS LIKE 12! WTF
Not to mention the artist for this show plagiarized and traced a lot of art in the past, and maybe even during production.
I heard about that, but I didn't know anything about it or even if it was true, so I didn't mention it.
@@RandalltheVandal there's some sperg you can find online about it if you look up Ilya Kuvshinov tracing/plagerism and stuff
Stop hating bro. It's a good addition to the series
How?

Start to watch now....5 mim and i was like, "wtf is this?"
They made a family friendly Ghost in the Shell?

Spot on observations and great review.
Nice like/dislike ratio. 2045 is fantastic.

@@ADABenStone I was talking about you, dipshit.

Maybe japanese likes it, or chinese depending on thier major demograph
Couldn't tell ya
Ah yes anime character don't look like anime characters, the floor here is not floor
A question: how many 2d shows of a repeated franchise do we need? and is it alright to branch out?
I will watch your review on it.
At this point, you're ignoring reality in order to defend this laughably bad looking show.
