I've seen people make a plan... 3D printed parts that go under the bars and connect around the stem... Then you still mount your unit in the middle, out ahead of the handlebar
I don't have a power meter but when me and my mates are doing long fire road climbs on our mtb easiest gear out the saddle sprints are a pretty hillarious thing to do and if you give it everything you can make your self work alot !
Did you guys mention the importance of a good warm-up before attempting sprint sessions, cause doing cold sprint from low pace in low gear/big ring can cause serious knee problems. I was taught sprint sessions here in Belgium from an ex Pallman/Collstop pro and we always started with 10-15km warm-up before the first set.
If you're chasing high numbers I would think you would do well over rolling hills. Attacking up a hill when I'm already going fast from the downhill is when I feel I am putting out the most effort but I don't have a power meter to confirm that.
I would think that your max power will be at the point where the gearing choice and forward resistance (be it wind or gravity or even brakes) allow you to have a moderately high cadence (80-95rpm?) at maximum muscle recruitment. So I guess the fourth scenario I'd be curious to see would be coasting into the start of a hill followed by a max acceleration up the hill. I might need to replicate this test!
For s standing start maybe the key it's to get better at shifting.. so you can stay in the 80-100 rpm cadence. Maybe you won't have an amazing max power but a higher average power may win your sprint.
Spin classes covers pretty much all these variations of gears/resistance, cadence and speed. Just need to get a power meter now... Probably a lot more fun than sweating your mammary glands off in a room that reaches the temperature of the sun by the end of a session!
I've got results ranging between 1669 W and 1767 W, just wish I could put it to use apart from being the first across the intersection from a standing start at a traffic light. Mysteriously always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when it comes to races. Still waiting for that one lucky day...
Would be interesting to see what the cadence was at peak power. My peak is 1244 at 92rpm. I would also like to see a test pulling up on the back end vs only pushing down...I've gotten mixed opinions on pulling up on the back end; some say never do it, some always do it. I pull up on the back end when sprinting...specially on uphill sprints, so much that I've accidentally lifted my rear wheel off the ground a couple of times.
My best 5 secondes is 1520 watts. I rode it at the end of a race in a short breakaway. I think the adrenaline did a lot. Something you can't simulate while testing your max power. Btw, I am an ex-bmx rider www.strava.com/activities/599566387/overview
I suspect the results may have something to do with maths. My college days are getting fuzzy, or maybe they always were, but I seem to remember the definition of power as power=torque generations per unit time-revolutions. So, for a given amount of torque (leg force) the higher the cadence the more power produced as your applying more torque moments per unit time. I wonder which test had the highest average cadence over the test window and what your torque curves look like vs cadence.
I have a good idea for you! Instead of waving your arms around strangely hoping that the globe will be positioned near them at the end of the videos, make a thin "globe" from thin MDF wood or something like that and then take that with you on the shoots, then you can just hold that up at the end of the video! You can have that idea for free, or maybe a GCN bottle would do it... ;)
Now take that all out sprint, extend it to 2 minutes, then go easy for 30 seconds, and repeat 20-30 times. This is just one of the insane workouts of the current world champion squash player. And it takes place after his on court training.
The 2,619 Watts wasn't over a 3 or 10-second average so it's not really applicable and wasn't on a bike. I was a sprinter and I peak now at 2400 watts (28 inch thighs) but I'm 254 pounds so my overall acceleration isn't going to be near as fast. It's actually pretty sketchy putting down max power when your chain stretches and has snapped before. I'm on chain 6 in the last 4200 miles alone. Quote: "Bolt's maximum power output was 2619.5 watts after only 0.89 seconds of the race"
This bike was really easy to assemble ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.
It has been my best investment for sure. It isn't even that expensive. I got a great deal on a Stages Power Meter (Shimano 105 crank arm) for my ultegra group set. 320£ last year. It's great.
Good job Dan. Way to show up Simon!
Dan, it's been bothering me for quite some time now, but can't you put your cycling computer in the middle of the bars like Simon? My OCD is tingling
The aero bar is restricting him :)
I've seen people make a plan... 3D printed parts that go under the bars and connect around the stem... Then you still mount your unit in the middle, out ahead of the handlebar
now that you said it i cant help but notice it again and again
GCN sprinting videos are my favorites. Since I'm not that fast, sprinting is part of my training to try and improve my speed and strength.
Dan came dangerously close to an off-road adventure there on the second set of sprints.
"Sprints", or spirits?
Perfect timing gcn, I have a circuit race Thursday evening... especially when I pull the reverse breakaway
Awesome! Best gcn vid so far. More of this! Real wattage data and challenging each other! Go for it!
I think this is the best experiment GCN has done... KUDOS
2:56 Chris Froome is running up behind the GCN guys - they didn't even say hello
Haha made my day
its more like 2:50
hahhahahhahah!!!!!
Hahahaha
Thx for more or less answering my question on the sprinting.
After suffering a mechanical failure, Matt Stephens can be seen emulating Chris Froome by jogging to catch up with Simon and Dan at 2:40.
It's a women out running, not Matt Stephens; sorry mate.
I don't have a power meter but when me and my mates are doing long fire road climbs on our mtb easiest gear out the saddle sprints are a pretty hillarious thing to do and if you give it everything you can make your self work alot !
Anyone else spot Matt at 2:30 running to catch up. Guess he was testing what power you put out when running like Chris Froome.
1308 watts, And that's why Dan's the BOSS
This video gave me that little bit of inspiration to go for a ride thanks guys! Max power was 754

I would have loved to see Lasty in this one. I feel like Lasty could put down the power.
legend says that if u reply early, Dan will reply
+Horog you're a bit late. I'll make an exception. Dan.
+Global Cycling Network what a classy guy
Is Horog an abbreviation for Hotdog?
+Jan-Harm van no bro
omg, the legend is true. the man has spoken
Yes! My highest watts ever beats Si's in the video.... no chance against the boss though :(
With his impeccable hair-game and red bike, Dan is unbeatable in any test GCN could throw at the presenters.
If you're chasing high numbers I would think you would do well over rolling hills. Attacking up a hill when I'm already going fast from the downhill is when I feel I am putting out the most effort but I don't have a power meter to confirm that.
Great video, guys!
My record is 1358 watts. Last year. Haven't tested it since. I should try tomorrow and link the strava file. :)
Any chance of an up date on the types of power meters and display units that are currently out there?
YAY!! Lee Wai Sze in a GCN clip!
Can you make a gcn science video about how tyre pressure affects power output/avg speed?
This video should be re-named to "How To Look Like You're Constipated While Sprinting"
That has to be a contender for comment of the week!
Didn'y anyone else watch this video in disbelief at how they could do a sprint video without Manon, only to look at the date afterwards?
Just started cycling two ago. Really enjoy these videos. Thanks Guys!
Legend says that Dan's fresh haircut adds 300 watts to everything he does.
Cracked out a cheeky 1348w out of a corner in a road race recently. Would have to be able to get over the climbs to make it count though...

The best sprinters (like velodrome guys) are usually combining cycling and power lifting. They squat pretty impressive numbers.
The best sprinters race BMX and are putting out 2700w
For s standing start maybe the key it's to get better at shifting.. so you can stay in the 80-100 rpm cadence.
Maybe you won't have an amazing max power but a higher average power may win your sprint.
Not sprinting low enough! Go back and view your video how to sprint like cav or your giro rest day w/ caleb ewan
+RC 1986 we were solely concerned with highest power for this, rather than highest speed, but I take your point! Dan
Only if it's raining.
From a standing start, well a very slow roll while I clipped in, 1174w and I'm just an old cripple.
Chris Boardman never broke the 1000w barrier! All about your muscle fibre type for this one.
*1000Kw, people always forget about that part.
Dan that trek did help you a little !!!! hahahah
Dan now has a new job, powering the GCN toaster
7:40 What a segway, Dan!

It is good to see Dan able to out sprint the lady jogger
i heard somewhere powertap Pedals overread wattage at sprint Effekts x-)
is Dan about to launch another line to his catchphrase? "I once rode for the Cervelo Test Team AND I have a maximum sprint power of over 1300 watts!!"
i never rode for anyone and i have a max power of 1422watts :(
i missed my calling
Would be interesting to see what the cadence was at peak power. My peak is 1244 at 92rpm. Looks like Dan was about to lay an egg at 1:21!
Was that Chris Froome coming up behind you after your first set?

IT'S OVER 9000!

I've gotten 1313 in the saddle up a short but steep hill.
interesting! what are your body weights during this test. Thanks
1:22 Dan: "Aaah... that's better~"
My best power ever is 1,318w. Hurt like hell, but won a club race with it!
2:56 Chris Froome in training for Ventoux
and by the way my max is 1587 watts
What do you think is the right age to start cycling
4:29: The face of disbelief.
Thought Dan was going to burst into the Mungo Jerry Pushbike song @1:22
I have a good idea for you! 2:45 look at the background between Simon and Daniel.
Can anyone name exact model of Dan's bike? Looks good.
1000+ watts and that runner in the background still caught you guys.
Dan should start a "Senior Tour" based on the PGA's Senior Tour, so all the old guys can still compete outta their prime.
Now take that all out sprint, extend it to 2 minutes, then go easy for 30 seconds, and repeat 20-30 times. This is just one of the insane workouts of the current world champion squash player. And it takes place after his on court training.
Congratulations, Dan. You are worth half of Usain Bolt (2619W).
Also 1.75 horses.

Radiation Network you can't possibly be a cyclist at 254lbs???
If you want to get a new maximum power go to your local climb and smash it up there at 200 or more cadence.
Dan could do with being a little more competitive.
so what is the highest wattage on finish sprint ever recorded
RUNNER BACK!!!!
Anyway great video, probably going to get a powermetter in 2 years :p untill then im going by feeling :D
I want that music and where did it come from
2:49 thougt it was Froome running in the background
So how long exactly are the sprints and is that time done for all the tests?
What kinds of RPM were you guys doing while sprinting the faster sessions?
It´s now time for new nickname. "The Wattage Beast" Lloyd
*nice*
My highest ever wattage is 1299 watts. I did it on a 1990 Wheeler 8890 with a Deore XT groupset.
Edit: I'm 16 and 54kg.
Dan smiles way too much when he found out about his power output..
Is that Chris Froome at 2:39 ?
for a change I'd like to see you guys playing the rock music and the rock musicians out on the bikes

Where were the science glasses?! I wasn't prepared
is that froome running again in the background there? (2:50)
How gutted will Dan be when he doesn't get the Wattage Bazooka?
LOL
+Johnny Hanel Dan must have seen this comment - he nominated himself for the Wattage Bazooka on this week's GCN Show.
Legend of Hong Kong, LEE Wai Sze!
Is that Froome sneaking into the background at 2:30?
How do I beat my mates? Simple, with a piece of wood.
Could just hear cav shouting "get low get low"
1.21 GIGA WATTS!
DAN where is your power meter.... I dont see it on the chainring side so im guessing it on your pedals though I couldnt see it there........????
Anyone wants to donate me a powermeter?
Same
It has been my best investment for sure. It isn't even that expensive. I got a great deal on a Stages Power Meter (Shimano 105 crank arm) for my ultegra group set. 320£ last year. It's great.
If you're in the US, most YMCA facilities have bikes with accurate enough power meters. Use those as a base.
saaammmeeee 😂😂
So, thanks +Global Cycling Network for donating us three powermeters
What bike is the all black one need help
Once I got 2,200, but i wasn't even when I sprinted, my powermeter glitched ;)
Dan the lean mean wattage machine
Max power I've registered was 1711 watts. Also pretty happy with 1378 average over 15 seconds :)
Anyone else reckon Dan's hair gave him an aerodynamic advantage over Simon's?
Was that Dan hairdresser catching up on foot with the hairspray.
At 2:40 did anyone but me think that lady running towards the camera was Matt?
is strava's estimated power output accurate?
who needs nuclear when you got these two powering the grid !
