Told a salesman I'd put 10k down for a 17k car. He didn't flinch. Basically talked me out of it. Talked to my buddy who worked for the same company. He told me, "they make extra money off of payments and interest. Here they want you to put like nothing down. They want every extra penny." Goes both ways I guess.
By federal law, any payment in cash over $9,000 triggers an audit that they are supposed to run on you and the that means a ton of extra paper work for the dealer ship and if the IRS discovers your money is funny, the dealer ship shoulders the burden. Real Playas and gangsters, like myself only give $7500 max.
If they're a low end dealer selling low end cars they'd just like to flip them for lump sum gains. If they sell moderately nice cars with decently high price tags they like to drag those out and milk them.
I negotiated them down as far as they said they could go. Then I asked them if I financed with them could they cut me a better deal. They cut it down further. Then I wrote a check, and paid it off in full the next week.
Yep, I only had a permit when we were buying my first car. When we told him we had $9,500.....he didn't give a damn, he helped us with everything we needed 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I doubt I'll ever go to a dealership again. I bought a new car in 2015, and traded up in 2017 on account of needing something a little bigger (Mazda 3 to Mazda CX5). I went ahead and paid it off last year just to get rid of the note, and being that it's newer and is reliable, as well as being a top safety pick + as far as crash test ratings, I feel comfortable having my wife and son being in it. Meanwhile, when it came to needing a second vehicle, I opted to buy used and put the work in. I happened to already have a 2004 Grand Cherokee Limited that I bought from auction on a whim a couple years prior (intentions of investing minor effort to simply flip for profit), but ended up liking it...so I spent many weekends out there replacing parts and restoring it. Saved a ton of money going that route and I don't see that changing in the future. I hate car payments and hate how overpriced parts for newer vehicles are. Total scam.
I agree with putting in the work and fixing up your car instead of having a car payment. That’s if the car is still repairable. Believe me, I see these brand new Rams, Tundra’s, F-150s. I’d love to have something like that. But my 2006 Tacoma with 275k refuses to die. I replace some things here and there, but it’s saving me from a car payment of $550+. When the time comes to get a new car, (hopefully it won’t be for a while,) I’m definitely getting EXACTLY what I want.
@@xyz-hs9ix for a car like a scat pack you would need a pretty decent score as 515 is just horrible. & having 12k down payment gives the dealership a leverage if they ever stop paying for the car they’ll just take it back and keep the 12gs

Bought a nice used car 3 years ago and did the financing through the sales company. Only thing I did was to get a statement in writing that there would be no penalty for early payment if I wanted to get rid of the last few months. Got the blanket no prepayment statement, bought the car, paid the low down payment, took the papers back in the next week and paid the car off. Paid no interest and got the lower payment. They tried to get me not to pay it off because they gave me the lower price for their financing the car. The no prepayment close in writing gave me the clout to get the price I wanted. They are still mad at me. I know because I am friends with one of the new salesman and they tell this story to all of the new people.

Had some problems with autonation before but if you talk to manager they will show you set prices and straight up tell you what interest rate you qualify for instead of pretending your interest rate will be directly proportional to your credit. They will push for a lease though so you can't pay it off early. I ended up paying like 450$ total in interest.

Talked to my buddy who worked for the same company. He told me, "they make extra money off of payments and interest. Here they want you to put like nothing down. They want every extra penny."
Goes both ways I guess.

@@Ionlycomentwhileimontheshitter the interest is lower with a bigger down payment. What do you mean?
