It's so long ago since I've seen this! I thought the visions were waaaaay too obvious but watching them now really tells me they're not that clear at all.
Well, @@jimhershey5487 it was not all that scary really. I honestlt thought it was all going to come out and they were gonna show it. But no, it was just the thing exploding with blood or really, red dyed water, and the organs dont even come out just pieces of red flesh and bam. Done I used to find that scary 😂
I used to think that Nick’s visions were the best part of this movie, but then I realized a big problem with them The main thing that defined (or rather, defines) the Final Destination franchise is not present in this movie. And there’s a reason for that. When a character was about to die in the first three movies (as well as the fifth) we started to be paranoid of every single object in a 50 miles radius. Why? Simple: because we knew that something was gonna kill them, but we didn’t know what that was. Take Tod’s death for example. During his death scene, the movie shows a mirror, an open window, a pool of water slowly going towards him, a radio connected to an outlet, a razor-sharp shaver, a pair of pliers, etc. The movie shows us all these different objects, all of which have only one thing in common: all of them can cause the character’s death. Once we know that Tod is gonna die, but don’t know how he is gonna die, we start to feel the one feeling that defines the Final Destination franchise as a whole: paranoia. We start feeling the same paranoia that the characters feel when they know they are gonna die. We know they are going to die, but we don’t know how they are going to die. Is Tod going to accidentally stab himself with the pliers or the shavers? Is he going to electrocute himself with the radio? Is he going to slip in the puddle of water and bang his head? Ultimately, Tod died by accidentally hanging himself with a wire on his bathtub. But what is really special here is not the death itself, but the buildup. Letting us know that the character is going to die but not telling us how and then showing all of these different objects that could end up being the character’s demise creates a feeling of paranoia towards every object we see. And that is the genius behind the Final Destination movies. However, when watching The Final Destination, I didn’t feel this paranoia. There wasn’t a single moment when I actually showed fear towards the objects. And the reason for that is simple: Nick’s visions. While all the other movies create paranoia by letting us know very well that the characters were going to die but not telling us how they were going to die until it was too late, The Final Destination tells you exactly when AND how the characters are going to die. Take Carter’s death for example. Before we actually got the chance to see Carter’s death scene, Nick has a vision that shows a cross, a door, a horseshoe, a metal hook attached to a chain and finally, an explosion. When the movie finally gets to Carter’s death scene, we already know which objects are gonna be responsible for Carter’s death. That’s why this movie fails to make us feel the paranoia that defined the Final Destination franchise as a whole. The other films expertly made us feel this paranoia by letting us know damn well that the character was gonna die but not letting us know how until it’s too late. However, The Final Destination reveals too much of the deaths in these visions, letting you know which character was going to die as well as how they were going to die. Of course, there’s still the mystery of trying to figure out how all of these objects connect together to end up in that character dying, but this induces a feeling more similar to curiosity rather than paranoia. Perhaps if the movie didn’t have these visions, it would have fared a lot better. Even if it still doesn’t add anything to the FD franchise, I believe it would be worth to watch if it could make you feel the same tension and paranoia the other movies did. But these visions simply ruin that feeling by letting us know what to look out for when the characters were about to die
Exactly! The visions were way too predictable. They even showed the theatre explosion scene in the final premonition, so what's the point of waiting? We know what's going to happen, and by that point there were like TWO survivors left apart from Nick.
Well at least they did an important part of making the most interesting scene in the movie: the Hunt's death sequence They showed hints for Hunt and Janet deaths: the car wash and the pool (even they showed more the stuff for the car wash death, making us think Janet was more likely to die) and made us feel the paranoia of which one was going to happen, with Hunt finally dying against every spectation
john steadman yeah she did (so that would make her the second most powerful), but she had three different types of premonitions 1. The opening accident 2. Her own death to save the survivors 3. Isabella surging the pileup Nick (as I said before) foresaw two major accidents, had unique premonitions for other people’s death and he had one of the mini premonitions inside the second major one.
This kind of thing could go somewhere, but instead of it being like this, crazy visions that only have main images of that person’s death, what if there was a horror movie where someone experiences the exact way someone will die, only to realize that it was actually a vision of someone else’s death?
