The Curtis's charitable work is completely admirable, of course, but to have a library and church named after yourselves, and then to be crowned chief of a village is more than narcissistic!!

they didn't name it themselves, the village did. I personally think this is all a bit 'wild thornberries'. They give some time a year to this village, then go back to their John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, 5 bedroom house lifestyle. Why don't they just sell everything, give the money to the village and become low-paid teachers out there?

I remember this when it was first shown, and thought both families had their faults and were extreme opposites. Although the Curtis's seemed like they were all about doing good for the less fortunate, it did not sit right with me how they seemed to enjoy being treated like royalty by the people they help. This made me question their motives.

    • @amywebb9311

I can't imagine anyone would put that much work in, live in those conditions, in that heat year in, year out just for a little bit of special treatment. The villagers are grateful for the work they're doing - of course, they're going to treat them well. It's called gratitude. They have nothing of material value to offer in return so they say thank you by treating them well, like royalty as you say. Not every good deed has selfish motives. Rosemary and her family have done wonderful things in Ghana and should be very proud of how they have changed peoples lives for the better.

The religious daughter needs learned that the other family had not expected that kind of thing.
Their bodies were tired from travelling, they were shocked by the climate temperature etc and its something they were not prepared for as it is something new.
All of that together is enough to exempt them for the first day at least to get to grips with it all.
They were allowed to exempt themselves from certain parts of the others holiday so especially being the good Christian girl she is supposed to be she should be more understanding like her mother was.

    • @melissaadrian8591

especially if church was so important. Let them rest the day they arrive so they will be up and ready for church. They are jet legged, three of them went with you shopping and such intead of resting. Then you wake them up early and drag them to 3 church services, and complain they are not all chipper and happy. I'd have insulted them at the lunch too as I have food allergies and liely couldnt have eaten anything (allergic to fish and cross contamination would concern me with the other food)

There is no one way to charity, and charity starts equally with everyone around you. If you're really such a kind person, you would be kind to everyone, not just exclusively to the group of people who worship you. Also, would it still be considered charity if someone donates, helps pack boxes, and speaks out for the cause but never travel there to live among the people they are helping? I feel these are 2 totally separate things. I'm not saying the work they do isn't wonderful. I'm saying that I hope Emily doesn't get caught up in the superficial part of charity and forget its true meaning like she and many other religious people do.

I found this episode to be a little sad.I thought I could relate to 1 family because of the missionary work, I couldn't. I thought I could relate to the other family cuz I've enjoyed vacations dancing, drinking and relaxing, I couldn't. They both just seem too judgmental (in different ways.) They both need to find a happy middle. When I have done missionary work I actually WORKED but I found it very gratifying. On the other hand when I've had vacations like the 1 in Cancun I also enjoyed that. Neither 1 appreciated what the other had to offer. I also feel giving should be done without expecting recognition. I found the crowning self serving. The only thing that helped was at least 1 family decided to help more. Emily's attitude was atrocious and I found her to be the least likable of all them. As a Christian when I watch shows like this and there's a Christian family represented I always hope they'll come off well they typically never do it's like they pick the most judgemental, uncompromising, self serving Christians like Emily and her Dad. I don't know what it says about me but I would have enjoyed a week working in Ghana with children and helping build something and I would have also enjoyed a week in Cancun swimming with dolphins and having a drink on the beach. I would be grateful for both opportunities.

She was right about that though, there are places where they go out on boats and find the pod(?) Of dolphins then people swim with them in the wild. Dolphins should be in the wild not tiny little pools. Watch the 2009 documentary "The Cove" and see how these places aquire their dolphins it's absolutely disgusting how they are rounded up into a cove in Japan, they take the young/pretty ones and sell them to oceanariums and zoos then the rest are stabbed with giant spears and sold for meat. The sea in the cove literally turns red from the blood it's absolutely sickening.

It was through a church but no missionary work was allowed, only work like teaching at school, plumbers, builders, medical jobs like drs and nurses etc. It was an amazing experience and one that’ll live with me forever but it wasn’t a holiday. We only had close family visit us, and we all had to respect the locals and their customs and not look down on their way of life or poverty. We used to drive a few 100km away to go for holidays in the same country but in touristy areas.

I don't mean to speak ill of the dead, as she and her family clearly did good works, but I agree with the comment below that Rosemary in particular seemed to enjoy being put on a pedestal by the people in Ghana. And having the library named 'Rosemary Curtis Library' seems very self-righteous. Doesn't seem to reconcile with the supposed 'selfless' work they were doing. Okay sorry, I admire their charity work and changes they’ve made to people’s lives, but the genuine people in this were the Littlechild family. A library named after you and some weird ceremony to make you some sort of royalty? Narcissistic behaviour at best.

It's the entertainment factor- it's always either:
    -Rich Vs Poor
    -Decadent Vs Moral
    -Tacky Vs Snobby.
That's all it is. Notice that both of these families were actually quite well off. The entertainment this time comes from the fact that the Littlechilds have decadent and tacky holidays. While the Curtis's have very spartan, principled (but often self-righteous) ones. But yes, Emily is very judgemental for a supposed "Christian".

Regarding the water in the jacuzzis, it isn't drinkable like the tap water in most European countries (I.E Spain, Greece, Turkey). the water parks are the same if not salt water, so good luck giving that to the African villages to drink. You'd probably kill them half of them off !!

I'm sorry but the other family have no idea what they sound like when they are moaning about needing showers, air con and this that and the other ,,,The whole point of this experience in Ghana is to be aware & appreciate what they do have compared to what little these villagers don't and give rather than take and yeh its going to be a culture shock but i think most of us could do with a bit of that. I have been in a situation where i was nearly homeless and had little (and i'm talking about food, basics etc ) not material things but compared to these villagers i was a lot richer in that, but i think they are richer in their community spirit and how they all pull together and help each other...Our Countires and cultures seem to have lost that .Well done to the son and his girlfriend for sticking it out to see the real world ,the true poor, but the most giving people in those missionaries .

I knew Emily a while ago and she is a genuinely lovely person. The problem with shows like this is both positive and negative opinions can be expressed by any individual and edited in such a way that they can be made to be made to look like a pain in the bum. I assure you, she's fair from the person she's painted out to be here.
