    How to remove your sealed beam headlights and upgrade to the US spec ellipsoid lights in your E30.

    Wiring may vary depending on your year and model of E30. We wired these so the low beams and fogs turn off when the high beams are powered. If you want the fogs and lows to be on with the highs, modification to the light relays is required. We do not cover that modification in this tutorial.

    Nice step by step but what about the solenoid mod that allows for all 4 headlights to be on with high beams? That’s the way it worked originally.

    Nice DIY, but that magic you performed with the hood opening on its own has me MIND BLOWN! ;) 0:13

    Thanks for the nice vid and your time making it.
    What about the black plastic covers that fit on the back of the headlight assembly, clipped in from inside the engine bay? They're nice to isolate the rear headlight wiring from all the "stuff" that can leak in the engine compartment, like oil from a leaking oil filter housing that dumps oil all over the belts and slings it everywhere !?!? Product installs need to use ALL the other "engineered parts" because the EGG-HEAD that designed the gizmo had a reason. Were you able to use those again behind those "Magic Twanger-Whiz-bang" conversion lights? Did they fit back on or were the lights too deep into the engine bay??? Thanks

    Is there a difference between an ellipsoid headlight and a projector headlight? Or are they the same?

    can you do one on how to install the euro smileys?

    • @TWIRKNOLOVE

      It's exactly the same. If you want to take advantage of the city light, just splice it to the bumper lights.

    So you’re ok with the low beams not going on when you have brights on? Tried wiring them in and blew the relay.... did you ever try to get them all working?

      Haley 8D I used blade connectors for my swap getto ik but if you just put the blade connectors in and just test your wires that's how you can find out

    Is it possible just to do the low beam ellipsoid and keep the sealed high beams?

    Hey, thanks for all the videos, they are really helpful. Why did the outer (low beams) turned off when you switched to high beams? Did it have something to do with the 3rd wire that was not used?

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  8 лет назад +2

      Thanks! On this early model, in order to have both the highs and lows on at the same time it would require jumping pins in the fuse box. I prefer not to make modifications to the fuse box and just kept it simple. There may be more info about it on r3vlimited. I apologize for not having more info.

    We have almost the same car! Except mine is a convertible. Anything on wiring the lights so the lows stay on when the high beams are on? Jump pins 30 of the high beam and low beam relays together?

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  8 лет назад

      +andwhatshouldbe Nice! I believe there are at least 2 variations of pin jumping based on model and production year, so I left this out of the video to make it more universal. I would recommend r3vlimited.com to find the wiring diagrams/info for the high beam modification :-)

    Where would I get 2 replacement pigtails? I got some hella lights from a junkyard, and I did not grab the pigtails.

    • @TheCatMilton
      @TheCatMilton 7 лет назад

      You can order a 9006 plug or pigtail on ebay. The plug would look nicer as you would put it on the factory wiring and there would be no splicing required. You could also get the plug off nearly any car at a junkyard.

    Can u use 5 series same year lights cause i cant find any 3 series this year in junkyard with the newer style headlights all have the sealed beams but theres 5 series with newer headlights like these just wondering if they would bolt on

      Unfortunately no they will not. Keep looking for the E30 ellips!

    Still trying to figure out how to wire them, so the outer lights remain ON with high beams. It works this way with the original sealed-beams, but when I follow your process it deletes the low beam side...

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  7 лет назад +2

      larinoriani hey, thanks for watching! I mention in the vid and the description that there are several ways to do the wiring. Wiring also depends upon your model year, and if you're comfortable jumping pins or dealing with relays to configure the lights as you describe. Check r3vlimited for more wiring write ups and options!

    • @larinoriani
      @larinoriani 7 лет назад

      I think it could be due to that third wire that stays unused on the low beam side because my '91 comes already wired to act that way....thanks, I'll search the forums to see what I can find!

    • @peterlevine1738
      @peterlevine1738 7 лет назад

      Yes you need run a jumper between pin #30 on both the low beam and high beam relay.

      +Ryan Moriglioni thanks for watching Ryan! I purchased the lights and pigtails from a parts car. You can find parts on E30 specific forum communities such as r3vlimited, bimmerforums, and also eBay!

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  8 лет назад

      +MessyOg you will need the ellipsoid connectors, so try to cut them from the car that you get them from. You can find them on eBay, the forums, and I think they are still available new at the dealer.

  • @MrCuckoobox

    The Ellipsoid are better......Go one step further - replace halogen bulbs with xenon (HID) bulbs with a xenon kit (H1 I think is the plug type check)......Inexpensive kits (start at $30) are available on Ebay - no rewiring.....just plug and play and find a place to mount the ballast. You can choose the color like 7000k. Better light, longer lasting bulb and less watts so less heat to melt plastic and less stress on the electrical system. Highlights go from 55 watts to about 35 watts per side.

    Where did u get the euro grills ?

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  7 лет назад +2

      They're OEM from the dealer. I'm not sure if they allow those to be purchased anymore, but it is possible. BMW recently stopped letting people order euro parts without proof you have a euro car. Get the euro part numbers by looking at realOEM.com

      1988 and 1989 US models came with ellipsoids, the smiley/city lights are the euros obviously. I think the US beam pattern is better personally
