A very strong cast. I need to watch again, but didn't James Mason act as the lead attorney for the Church? I remember his attempt to buy Mr. Galvin off was also a masterpiece.
I watched this movie so many times. My brother was a lawyer and doing well but drink 🥤 took him down. I spent a few minutes with him in his beautiful sail boat on the Texas Coast, he passed a few days later because he drowned in the ocean with a very high blood alcohol content!
I've watched this dozens of times, but I recommend you watch it at least three times. The first time for the experience of watching a master actor at work. The second time to listen to and to absorb the words in the script, and realize the effect the words have on your life, and the third time, to watch every person in the scene other than Newman. It's a movie, but you have the feeling it's real because of their reactions... and the absence of reactions. They're actors, but they believe what he's saying.

Has he ever done a bad one? Hombre, Cool hand Luke, The Sting, Butch Cassidy..I mean, c'mon. And a gorgeous mensch..his Hole in the Wall Gang..Newman's Own. Newman, Belafonte..actors who were not only great actors and performers..but talented and altruistic.(and not to forgetting my sisters..Ms. Betty White..great comedic actress and activist. And a sweet person IRL.)
I felt that as he said himself his looks catapulted him to fame but in two key films; Torn curtain of Hitchcock and The Verdict when he was well directed his performances were exceptional. This film is profound, moving and an example of a master actor at work.
I would add Hombre, Cool Hand Luke to that. Not to mention Butch Cassidy. And he was great in early films too..Somebody Up There Likes Me which Sly Stallone blatantly ripped off for Rocky.
My father was a lawyer who actually resembled Paul Neuman, blue eyes and all. He and his law partner had a big case against a bank that they called " the Paul Newman case . "
Sidney Lumet tells how on the first take Paul Newman can an immaculate perfect reading. However there was an technical issue with the camera focus. Lumet was mortified having to ask Newman to go again - but he was fine. Lumet says that this printed second take was even better. Trivia note - thats a pre fame Bruce Willis in the second row on the right.
Bruce Willis is sitting in the third row from the back, second from the right, during this scene, before the camera tracks to the right. Then, he's in the third position from the right.
Watching this video reminds me of when I was in court, small claims, criminal and Supreme Court, and the worst part was that I hired a crime defense lawyer, and I fought the case myself and I won the case and the judge really listened to me, as my father wanted me to be a doctor then he wanted me to be a lawyer and maybe I should have taken his suggestion and I think that I would have made it fine lawyer
Many don't know that Bruce Willis is right over Paul's left shoulder as he stands at the jury box railing. Also, no one deserved the Oscar that year BUT Newman. As of 2021, it's been 13 years since Paul Newman died. RIP.
Dramatically powerful, but utterly unrealistic. Galvin doesn't even mention the facts of the case! Possible ineffective assistance of counsel, guaranteeing reversal. But, of course, that would happen anyway because the judge earlier took over cross-examination of the plaintiff's expert, and even expressed his opinion on the ulitmate issue in the case, i.e., no negligence, right in front of the jury.
this is movie making at it's finest , we know how the system works , but to see it illustrated before our eyes in living color sill makes you cringe , how about director SYDNEY LUMET and actor JACK WARDEN back together after 25 yrs. to make another of the all time great courtroom dramas , the first of course being 12 ANGRY MEN .
David Mamet wrote a great script. Thankfully, he had no role in directing his script, for he has a tendency to make the actors perform in a stilted, self-conscious manner.

Compare this speech to actual footage from Court TV etc. ? This is a writer really milking a scene . It's shameless manipulation really. I suspect Mamet is probably embarrassed when he watches it today.? And the speech wasn't really needed. . We had understood by this point....
This was his best picture.
Newman deserved the academy award for this picture.
is there a NEWMAN picture where he dose not deserve one ? lol
Newman was nominated for an Oscar, but was beaten out by Ben Kingsley for Gandhi. How ya gonna beat Gandhi ??
A very strong cast. I need to watch again, but didn't James Mason act as the lead attorney for the Church? I remember his attempt to buy Mr. Galvin off was also a masterpiece.
An Oscar-worthy performance, for sure. Newman’s best performance. But Ben Kingsley playing Gandhi and nailing it?
I think it's been pretty much agreed upon by media critics that his Oscar for The Color Of Money was actually for this performance.
RIP Paul Newman (January 26, 1925 - September 26, 2008), aged 83
You will always be remembered as a legend.
What an incredible actor he was. Truly.
What a performance by a very talented and underrated actor.
Paul Newman's good looks never faded away even until the end of his life ❤😊 Blessed and Best Actor ❤❤❤❤❤❤ RIP ❤ 🙏
One of the top films ever made.
He did this in one take, no camera cuts. Amazing brilliant actor. He is missed.
who
Mr. Newman did this in one take. Brilliant oration.
yes. well said.
One take or one shot?
I do my whole life in one take. No problem.
A man who had lost his soul and now has found it again.
This is the case. He was right because of how you put it.
Nobody but Newman could have made this guy so real
A career of so many great performances...I think this is his best!
Absolutely.
Agreed.

One of his greatest performances.
From the :30 mark to about 1:45, the dialogue resonates so well with today.

Remember watching this film with its green tinge. Classic. Now have it on my phone.
I saw this in 1983 and was impressed. Still a great movie with wonderful actors. James Mason's performance was also a treat.
James Mason role was a part of a lifetime!!!!
Yes. Mason was “The Prince of F*cking Darkness!” As Jack Warden pronounced.
Love him. Especially enjoy the Last of Sheila & Salems Lot ⭐️

@@mikekemp9877 Loved the look on his face when she said “I made a copy” he’s so fatalistic. He knows it’s over
The scene that got me was the star witness shouting and crying as she just wanted to be a nurse and that was ripped from her. "WHO ARE THESE MEN???!"
Lindsay Crouse was indeed brilliant as the attending nurse.
Every time I come to that scene I get all choked up.
One of the best roles by Paul Newman.
THE best

Genius of David Mamet
one of the greats who comes in under radar
I love this movie. So real.

Awe inspiring writing ✍ ❤ ...direction, and acting 🎬
This is very relevant today.
You can see Tobin Bell and Bruce Willis in this scene
I follow not kust the arguement, but the emotion!!
I am using this. No one will ever know. RIP Newman. Yes its one take. No cuts. Good get William.
this is my own audition scene that I have chosen for my assignment 2
Well deserved Oscar nominated performance. Its an Acting lesson forever. See Bruce Willis as an extra Second from right in second row.
They went on to be in a movie together. Nobody’s Fool 94
Playing a big part in success of this film, is director Sidney Lumet, and Chicago writer David Mamet...2 played significant roles, in success of film

why Paul Newman was considered one of the best actors, ever!
Fun Fact: Bruce Willis is in this scene as an extra.
He’ll be the one in a vest with a machine gun then…😂

This is Paul's finest performance ...as well as "Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid, " film ..."Sting," and "Cool Hand Luke"
I’m here after watching Johnny Depp’s team closing argument
It was great to see him vindicated as well.
in the courtroom as an observer--Bruce Willis (with hair;next to the guy with the moustache)
And Tobin Bell to Willis' right.
Pretty Cool
Bruce Wills in his first movie scene. In the gallery to the right, between the woman and the man with the mustache.
Bruce Willis observing
Bruce Willis is in the background
Thats Bruce Willis in the third row. Tobin Bell in front of him. They were probably pretty happy to play "Extras"
Thats Bruce Willis in the second row. Tobin Bell is in the first row. Filmed at Kaufman Astoria in NYC.
whoever made the subtittles for this scene deserves a shot to the knee
In the BG is retired actor Bruce Willis.

Prosecutor summation of Vile Rittenlouse trial.
Yes. And rightly acquitted.
I would have liked to have seen Concannon's summation also, just to add weight overall. My only critique of this very wonderful film!
Die Hard and Saw representing in that courtroom
Bruce Willis
