  • How to Make Your Own Guppy Strain! This is an update video on how to create a new guppy strain. In my fish room I am trying to create my own guppy strain by crossing a black moscow guppy and a red cobra guppy. This is a breeding guppies for profit project. Check out the update as well as some other guppy breeding tips. Have you ever wanted new guppy strain?

I love my mutt guppy tank. After 2-3 generations I suddenly have had a Dumbo Gene pop up. No parents showed this Gene at all. So fun to watch how it turns out. I now have half black Dumbo males with yellow and red cobra on the back half, and blue above the black on the body, with Dumbo fins. I love my babies!

Omg. So excited. I found my first guppy baby about 2 weeks ago and found 3 today. I am old and my eyesight isnt that good but the first one is allready like 4 times the size of the micros i fished out today. They are doing great in their tiny tank. Cant wait to see what they turn into color wise.

From breeding guppies myself I feel that they do hold forever until they are empty. Also thats why I got my Moscow Guppies from you to put with my strain in making. But I'm working with orange cobras that I made :). Its easy to make new strains because how quick the guppies gestation is. I'd say wait a month or two more and then start culling to your specifications you want. Good luck bro

Like your video, Michael. About the max period of sperm packet storage. I do hear a lot that it only lasts for a couple of months. But that's an incorrect info what people give. Most work with the info they've found and use that as a reference. But the truth is that the sperm storage can take up to over a year even. That's why I always use virgin females when I start a breeding project. So, a female guppy that has mated within a year time, I don't consider such a female a clean female. Too much risk that she's still carrying sperm packets in the folds of her fallopian tube. I'm keeping and breeding guppies ever since the 1970's untill this very day. So, also a passionate guppy enthusiast like you. I've enjoyed your video.

Most Moscow coloration is carried by the males. So you might consider adding in some more Black Moscow males and pulling out as many of the males that aren't colored to your liking. This would let the Black Moscow males breed with more of the females. You'd likely get closer to what you're wanting a bit faster and easier that way.
Or pull out a bunch of the females, move them to another tank with just Black Moscow males to breed with.

Hi there. While I'm no geneticist either, a ton of reading and some personal experience with breeding has taught me some things about genetics.
First of all, without literally knowing the genome of both parents and testing to verify that they were 100% pure blooded of some variety, fish like Guppies can carry sub dominant traits... Many subdominant traits. And the problem becomes if a mother and father pass two of the same recessive traits on to a baby, then they become what's known as homozygous for the recessive trait, and it will show up. To a person breeding the fish they may believe they have a new variety when in fact it is not a new variety but is simply blind luck that the two parents had the same recessive gene.
For example, I crossed an albino bristlenose female with a Calico bristlenose male, and while I got 50% albino babies, I also got 50% babies that are not Calico but which are simply Basic Black bristlenose. In other words, none of them look like the father. So the father's recessive Calico trait did not pass on to any of the babies. The mother and father both had traits from plain brown bristlenose so that is what appeared rather than the Calico trait.
And then oddly, I have a long thin brown bristlenose that I breed with albinos and I get 100% long fin brown bristlenose babies, and no albinos at all. So apparently the long fin gene and the brown coloring are dominant and we're passed together. But I'm not certain because I've only done this with a couple of pairs like this.
Anyways, yes it is fascinating, but having been doing what you are trying for a long time, I find that my guppies still have the primarily dominant long Tails I want and the primarily dominant red color I want, still there are oddball babies born even 10 and 12 Generations later....maybe more. So apparently they simply are not a pure strain yet.
Sorry to write such a long response, but it is definitely interesting, and also I find often many people who are claiming to have new strains of Guppies probably don't have a new strain but are just more commonly getting shirt and jeans to express themselves which have been present in the bloodline For who-knows-how-long!
You can find many RUclips videos where people complain that they're supposedly pure-blooded fish, when bred, did not have the traits they should have.... so the breeder was simply passing off what were basically mutts as a pure strain.

Just a few months ago I read the (pretty much) definitive article on this... apparently a team of scientists has looked at Guppy reproduction more closely and found out that the females have a lot of control over the process.
    They can basically
    - store the sperm
    - decide when to use it
    - choose between stored sperm from different males (!)
Which makes total sense... the females have no chance of getting away from the males... the males WILL have their way at some point... so the female has a system in place to also get a say in this...
the female holds the sperm and "observes" the potential fathers. If they are healthy over a certain period of time the female notes that as a pro on its pro + contra list :D
if they get eaten the female won't use their sperm... if the males don't seem to cope well with the current environment (unusually hot water, water that hasn't a lot of oxygen, whatever) the females won't use their sperm...
and obviously the female can decide that it's just not a good time to get pregnant and waits out whatever factor is making her nervous
so... the time it needs for a female to have no more sperm from a previous male stored inside her not only varies drastically... it can't be told. It's never certain.
Say you have a female with sperm from male A and B... and you put it with male C... and male C is awesome, the Brad Pitt of the fish world... so she skips the sperm from A and B and goes directly to producing the offspring of male C.
But months later C gets sick and the female decides to give those genes of male A a try....
So, that's basically what that article said. You can never be 100% sure there is no sperm from another male in the females left... only if you raised them and kept them away from any males and then put them with the male you wanna breed you have 100% certainty
