    I would have put your altamont goal male at 2:08 with that one female with the yellow dash on the bottom of the tail at 2:35 , to hopefully give the future females of the attempted strain a ID marker. So you can say that female is a so and so.

      Also, we have a Facebook group that specializes in helping one another with tips and tricks for the hobby. I'm always here If you have a question also. (22 years of Guppy Breeding has to come in handy at some point haha, so if it helps anyone else, then great!
      Google books also has some great free books on guppy genetics and what colors or patterns are dominant vs recessive, along with the style of tail and fins. I also have about a dozen other videos on endler's livebearers and everything that is true for guppies is basically true for endlers also. So any videos with that title may help also.
      Good luck, and have fun! Generation 3 is where you start to really see some cool changes, especially if you have a few extra tanks, or tank dividers to keep the females away from the males until you're ready for babies....remember, A female can use her first mate's sperm for the rest of her life if she wants, so never mix up lines of females and males of different generations or lines unless it is on purpose. Even a 3 month old female can reproduce sometimes. and should be seperated as soon as you can see the gonopodium or gravid spot.
      peace, my friend- Alex

    If you mate a fantail with a colorless female, you will get double swords and females with some pigment in the tail. If you pair f1 with f1, you get fan tails, double swords, pigment females and females with colored tails. I learned this from a book by Hans Luc kmann about the breeding of guppies. Do these rules also apply to endlers?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  4 месяца назад +1

      Usually... sometimes theres some sort of weird cross with guppies in their past that will hide a recessive gene and 25% of a spawn may not conform... but your assertions are correct :)

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  4 года назад +1

      It depends what trait im selecting for. If its already a solid line that I like the look of- then ill let them get 1 or even 1.5 years old and fully color up/fin out.
      If its selecting for something like spots, or an oval tail / split tail - then as young as 3 or 4 months sometimes. Color and fin shape and size change with age and also should ideally be selected from a tank of 1 year old males... but some things like tail shape will be visible at a similar time to when you can sex some males.

      Id look for a yellow sword with no reds... no purple red or orange colors... that means it's lacking the magenta gene and then cross that trait as yellow... with a blue strain you like already. Usually it takes a ton of work to get a pure yellow sword or pattern, so anything yellow or white with even a slight touch of blue or green will usually make a lot of bright green features

      For endlers anything between 74 and 80 seems totally fine. I like 77 or 78 since it keeps up their metabolism (you do feed a bit more and instead of 2 to 4 years of like id say they die 20% faster when they're in water near 80+)
      Likewise under 72 is doable ....ive kept them outside at 58 to 70 degrees, but they didnt have as many babies as i hoped, didnt color up well and really needed the sunlight hours just to recharge their energy.
      So basically a healthy fish will survive most waters...ive found that keeping it moving or aerated along with tossing in about half a cup to a cup of crushed coral per 10 gallons , is what makes them do the very best.
      Good luck! Please share the photo on yhe Facebook group if youd like to!
      Cheers, Alex

    i cross them with a selectionned half endler half guppy, and with selectionner red endlers.
    the result is meh, but i like them. i just have 100 of them in 10 galons lmao, i need to chance 50% of the water almost everyday

    I'm still learning about selective breeding, but there are no fenotypes in a female so does that make it not harder to select females during the breeding process ,? (since females also determine fenotype of offspring or maybe just don't carry good genes). So that's just a factor of luck I guess ? Do you often breed offspring males back to the mother female and do you see more "stunted" fish with them breeding ? I saw a youtube upload of a breeder (I think in Israel) who also finds short body a very special element in selecting quality in breeding (Aquarium Co-op once did a tour there). Do you find that yellow tiger endlers need black bars, because I'm still confused what really determines the word "tiger". A guy told me I have genetics from yellow snake type endler/endler-guppy (less dominant stripes)...

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 года назад +3

      So yes, the phenotype of female guppies is assumed by their male siblings...which is a terrible system. But only the last decade or so, has it been possible to see females with colors also. So I'm guessing they will change that old standard of basically ignoring the female's- is going to change soon. As for crossing guppies back to their parents, it seems okay for 4 or 5 generations before defects and health issues start to occur. Guppies evolved a cool resistance to chromosomal errors due to inbreeding. They have a protein in their RNA that sort of double checks the DNA copying more efficiently than other species

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  2 года назад

      So the whole tiger endler name means 3 or more vertical black stripes...the base color doesn't matter. If it's spotted instead it's a leopard and if the lines swirl at all then it's called snakeskin...but the swirling lines and dots are more common in the wild....so keeping a striped fish requires no ancestors with dots or swirls for 4 or 5 generations at least. Hope this info helps?

    • @TheBSideDJ
      @TheBSideDJ 2 года назад

      @@Fishtory tanx for the reply. Let's start selecting. I have 3 males with 4 to 5 vertical black stripes. Some have stripes through the whole section of their body, somewhat like a zebra. Maybe that's a little project (?). I didn't find a similar looking one on the holy internet. Or can the pattern still change when growing out ?

    • @giftofthewild6665
      @giftofthewild6665 2 месяца назад

      @@Fishtory the problem with inbreeding isn't usually caused by errors in replication though. It's caused by an increase in homozygosity (ie in an individual that is inbred more of their allele pairs at each locus will be identical).
      If they can somehow prevent embryos with high homozygosity being born that would help reduce the deleterious effects of inbreeding, but they'd need a mechanism to check each embryo after fertilisation and dump or reabsorb the ones with high coefficient of inbreeding.

    I know: a female can become pregnant 6 times from 1 fertilization. In the pet store, males and females swim together, so the females have been fertilized by an unknown male. If I put females together with a male of my choice, will it take six months for the female to give birth to the male of my choice?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 месяца назад +1

      It could. They can choose to "skip the line" and basically select the most recent sperm too... so it's kind of a surprise. The only sure way to keep females and lines clean genetically, is to keep them alone with other females from the age of reproduction...which is only 3 or 4 months old

      I ended up spending 3 years after this video, refining a strain called a "Lyre Tail Volta", this was the first step...well their babies were, then selecting my favorites and crossing them back to dad... then selecting those and pairing them off with each other or dad again....then split the colony, and at the end I had 4 tanks full of them. Sometime around August 2018 I had a video of the resulting strain, this video is about 5 or 6 years old now
