- Woodturning - In this video I do what many have wanted to see. I combine wood shavings from my recent roughing out video and combine it with Designer Epoxy and some spalted maple to make a really cool looking hollow form. Along with that I also have a major announcement from Designer Epoxy, thanks for watching!

When you said something was missing, then brought out the spalted maple, oh, you were so right! It makes the whole piece pop: light with dark figuring, against dark with light. Great choice! I'm not surprised it sold so quickly.
Thank you very much!
Looking at it without the light doesn't do it justice. Now, with the light OMG, it is so beautiful. Once again, you've shown us what can be done with not only wood shavings but things found in the backyard. Love it!!!
Thank you very much!
One word. Beautifull❤❤❤❤
Absolutely gorgeous!
Dang…right when I went to message you about buying it, you mentioned that it was sold. I love this new medium, there’s so much more you can do playing around with wood types and colored tents. I’m sure I’m not alone in hoping that we see this done again soon. This chanel has become one of the highlights to my Friday.
Wow! Thanks so much!
@@SpragueWoodturningawesome job on this I love it
I watched it again and realize why I'm drawn to it. The color reminds me of the swirls made when I add creamer to my coffee. And I do love my coffee!
That would explain, lol. Thanks
I've learned more about safety from watching your videos than two years in high school woodshop classes. My town really took the Ivan Drago approach to our education
Interesting, there pretty safety conscience here. Thanks for watching!
The spalting in the wood goes so well with the shapes of the shavings!!
Thanks 😊
I think you're right, Jim. It's the combo of Designer Epoxy, pressure pot and time that made it clean with no air bubbles. A super cool and interesting piece! I'd love to see another one with maybe a lighter shade of pigment, or maybe even clear, so that the wood shavings speak for themselves.
There will be more in the future! Thanks so much 😊
we in South Dakota get a lot of you smoke from somewhere
Canada thank you for the we have had a lot of rain here so I think that helped a lot thro and keep a positive mind you are good and if anyone conplains tell them to make their own wood turn !!!!
Lol, thank you very much!
That was a brilliant design decision to add the spalted collar! It totally mirrored the squiggly lines of the shavings! Beautiful project and very well executed Jim!!
Thank you very much!
That was so pretty. Love it but oh my the cost! Designer epoxy. Thank you for discount at designer epoxy.
It just goes to show you that what you expect to be a failure turns out to be the easiest and one of the most unique pieces that you have created. Keep up the experiments and you never know what could turn out to be the greatest thing you've ever made.
Thanks so much 😊
I like the 3D effect of this hollow form. At first I was not sure about the colour, if I was to be honest, but it’s growing on me that’s for sure. I think is goes really good with the colour of the wood chips.
I do like it best when it’s well lit from the top. It shows the 3D of the piece best, and it looks like calm water and the farther away the shaving is the darker it gets. It’s pretty cool when you see it with the best lighting.
Designer Epoxy
Thank you! Cheers!
What a great idea to use the wood shavings. If you do another one, maybe don't tint the apoxy so the wood colors are more defined. The maple collar really is a great finishing touch.
Thanks 😊
I was thinking the same thing... like a clear epoxy.... and maybe do the rice trick to get the hallow before the turn that way you won't use so much ( but then again you get that bag stuck in the epoxy too. 🤔) I think this is really beautiful. It gives me sort of wood suspended in water feel.
You got your designer epoxy system down. Looking forward to the next week inlays. Thanks jim ~Smile oN
Thanks again!
I'm truly at loss in expressing my appreciation of this wonderful piece of art without repeating what prior comments have already said. I absolutely love it and hope you will make some more of this kind - maybe in different colours? Thank you for creating such beauty
Wow, thank you!
Your red epoxy looks a rich dark brown. A very beautiful piece. The combination reminds me of lovely red granite. Changed my mind it's the color of the best made coffee!!! So beautiful
Thank you very much!
The collar makes all the difference. I think the contrast is a huge appeal. The shavings are interesting to look at, but the collar really makes it pop! Great news about the Designer Epoxy
Thank you very much!
Thanks, Jim, for posting. At first, I too thought that you were wasting your Designer Epoxy, but it turned out nice. I think the collar was a great addition, and really completed the piece.
Glad you enjoyed it
The light inside really makes this hollow form look amazing. As always wonderful work of art.
Thank you very much!
I love the "squiggles". And the fact that the shavings are throughout the epoxy gives it depth.
Thank you very much!
I love this piece it actually looks like a semi-precious stone like agate.... simply beautiful ❤ I would love to try the designer epoxy one day for sure. Thanks again for showing this gorgeous piece
Thank you! Cheers!
I loved the addition of the spalted maple top to that piece. That just finished the beautiful piece you casted. Thanks for sharing
Thank you very much!
I can only add to your subscribers how lovely your work is, Jim. Always a joy to watch you work 🌞
Thank you so much!
Yep, that's a piece I could stare at for a very long time - the spalted maple collar was a perfect pick too.
Very disappointed with how easy it came out of the bucket though. No Benny Hill music required.
Oh well never mind, there's always next week...
Thanks Jim - love watching your work
Haha! Glad you liked it!
I actually love the color choices you tinted the epoxy and adding the beautiful spilled maple piece on the top. It makes this hollow form look so rich. This piece turned out beautifully!❤
Thank you so much!
Wife and I really liked this piece, and beautiful as always. You can never go wrong with any spalted wood.
Many thanks!
Jim, you never cease to amaze us even when your not feeling that the end result of your piece is going to be success or an impressive outcome. You've once again out done yourself by creating another masterpiece which to me looked like it was discovered from an ancient tomb from past centuries ago. Design concept was spot on. 🏆👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you very much!
Different, unique, and absolutely beautiful! The maple collar was perfect. When illuminated from inside, the effect was spectacular. Thanks for sharing your artistry! 👍
Thank you so much 😀
Adding the spalted maple is a great look for that project.
Thanks 😊
Absolutely stunningly gorgeous Jim. Thank you so kindly for sharing your wonderful talent with us all ❤ Take great care and keep creating and smiling.
Thank you! You too!
The wood chip bowl turned out awesome but then again everything I've seen on your channel has been awesome. Thanks again for all the tips for us beginners.
Awesome! Thank you!
I think it's amazing, Jim!
Hope to see another one like this one
I’m sure you will! Thanks 😊
sitting on the lathe, it's beautiful! almost like swirling resin... i love it!!
Glad you like it!
I absolutely love this project! You should definitely do more experiments with different materials! So cool!
Thanks so much 😊
That wood shavings bowl is my favorite project that Jim has done!! It is spectacular!! 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much!
That's a unique piece which looks absolutely gorgeous. You should definitely consider doing something similar, possibly straight black walnut shavings with a lighter color epoxy.
Thanks 😊 great suggestion!
I would have never tried this because of the cost of the resin. I may try it now knowing the results are so spectacular! Congrats! And thanks to Gabriel at Designer Epoxy!
Thank you so much!
New things are always good, well most of the time. An outstanding work of art sir, as it always is. Down the road would like to see one with clear resin, but that's just me. Or glow in the dark resin may be cool. All in all this is a stunning piece of work sir.🌿 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ P.S. loved the premiere.
Great suggestion!
Stunned at the final result! I just couldn't imagine how it was going to work out in the end: and it's gorgeous! The addition of the maple collar was genius, really pure genius--it sets off the darker, curly-cued epoxy. Just WOW. Who'da thunk?
Thanks so much!
The hollow form ended up pretty cool. Not exactly a cheap way to use up shavings, but a cool look in the end.
Thanks!
@@SpragueWoodturning😅
Adding the spalted collar was a great choice - it adds so much to the piece. After seeing it lite from within I really would love to see the shavings done in clear resin. Enjoyed the video - yes, despite it coming out of the bucket easily 🤣 Great piece 🤩
Thanks so much! 😊
That turned out great. The maple top added to the look.
Designer Epoxy
Thank you! Cheers!
Alright Houdini! You have mastered what others have not! Excellent way to recycle those shavings into a sellable piece! Well done! I really liked it with the light inside. Consider making one of these into a lamp base: with a light on the inside for mood setting and a regular light on top
Thank you very much!
I think it turned out really good. I think the swirling matches the swirling in the collar really well so I think that was a great idea. The color works well with this piece in my opinion so overall opinion turned out really great.
Thank you! 😊
I love the natural look to your projects "designer epoxy" I need more epoxy for my projects to share
Thanks so much!
Did not think would be very attractive at the start, but I really like it a lot! Hava Goodun Jim!
Thanks 😊
Wow! I didn’t like it until the very end. Love it! I want to see what the end shavings would do.
Thank you very much!
It's amazing how much the shavings absorbed the epoxy!😅
Another Excellent piece!!!❤
Thank you very much!
This is the BEST shaving piece we’ve seen!!!!!! Outstanding!!!!!!!! I might have added mother of pearl, or clear resin with a strip light inside that changes color for you. I’m definitely going to use your trick to weed out the more frail end grain pieces!!! Thank you so much for taking this chance! Well done!!!!!!
Thanks so much 😊
I love it. You couldn't have chosen a more beautiful piece of wood, it matches perfectly. Designer epoxy has really been a great product. I love that you are always willing to try new things. It is beautiful, you did it again.
Thank you so much 😀
I really like this one. The collar was a great addition
Thank you very much!
You're a master Jim, I keep waiting for a miss but you hit it out of the park every week
Wow, thanks
Absolutely love it. The color of the form was different the what I thought it would be. Beautiful piece.!
Thank you so much!
You keep raising the bar for beautiful! What a gorgeous, deep piece! Love the collar!
Thank you! Cheers!
I think it looks great. The spalted ring did make a big difference. The Designer Epozy is a good product to work with. Keep up the great work. I learn something new each time I watch.
Thank you! Will do!
So cool! The spalted maple complements the resin-and-shavings beautifully, I think because the spalting kind of makes similarly shaped marks in the wood to what the shavings show in the resin.
Thank you very much!
Your "teaser" short had me on edge waiting to see this piece take shape. Have a great week. I can hardly wait to see what comes from your lathe next week. Designer Epoxy ..
Thanks 😊
It's cool Jim... it's VERY, VERY cool! 👍 Hopefully you'll be able to do a few more... if people like it as much as I do. Have a great weekend Sir.
Thanks! Will do! You too!
Designer epoxy and yourself have done it again. Job well done. I prefer the finish after you buffed it out after the first coat of epoxy. Both are beautiful, but that's my taste.
Thanks 👍
I think it was the contrast with the maple collar that did it for me - looks really good.
Thank you very much!
It is a beautiful piece, even if it is just shavings. As artists we can sometimes over think things and we get inside our head too much. I think that is the perfectionist in us. I love it and I can imagine this in piece in other colours. 😊❤️🙏🇦🇺
Well said! Thanks
Beautiful! Love the maple topper that mirrors the colors in the form itself. Great job. Designer Epoxy.
Thank you so much!
Beautiful! I think tinting the resin & adding the spalted maple were great ideas.
Thanks so much!
Turned out beautiful! I love the collar ! Every week you seem to up the
Previous week. I watched your video for the first time about two years ago. I started turning myself. I have tried over and over again and I finally got color separation. Thank you for all your knowledge. Much appreciated.
Thank you so much!
Designer Epoxy
I LOVE THIS PIECE!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice piece. Love how it looks with the light shining inside it.
Thank you! Cheers!
That's the trick putting it in the vacuum chamber and leaving it and letting it boil out and eliminate all the air in the wood, then the pressure pot sets the epoxy in the wood. I wasn't sure what this was going to turn out like, but when you put that first coat of finish on it -WOW. It gave it tremendous depth and a 3-D effect. I think you've found an outlet for your shavings! Keep up the good work, Jim!
Thanks so much 😊
Honestly I cant get my brain around how much I actually love this piece. The designer epoxy definitely makes a big difference, but the amount of forethought you put into keeping the shavings clean was a big factor. Incredible stuff, thanks Jim
Glad you like it! Thanks so much 😊
Artsy piece 🤩
I think you were right about the collar, it complemented really nice.
I think so too! Thanks
Gold shavings stuffed in a glass bowl. Interesting. I like it.
Thank you! Cheers!
That looked wonderful.
Hope you do more, maybe using a log of wood at the base with the curved side up so the epoxy and shavings are deeper on some sides.
Thank you very much!
It was pretty cool. Specially liked how it looked with the light inside
Thanks 😊
That turned out wicked cool. Especially with the light on it. Ty for sharing
Thank you! Cheers!
It's amazing, with the epoxy almost nothing goes to waste! Such a nice piece. It looks like it has such a visual texture.
I totally agree! Thanks
Great way to use up shavings. Very nice bowl.
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks like it has ribbons of gold running through it. It's very rich looking, honestly.
Thank you very much!
This bowl turned out great!! I really like the curls in there, so much to see from every angle. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!
One of my favorite pieces you have done.
Wow, thank you!
A really unique project. A fun way to recycle waste.
Thanks 😊
The contrast between the root beer like colour and the wooden collar is wonderful. Thanks for the vid, Jim!
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice work as always Jim and thanks to Designer Epoxy for their generous offer.
Thanks so much!
That spalted maple collar was THE perfect choice for this! I really love the textures in the shavings that come through when it's lit. I would love to see a piece like this with maybe gold tinted epoxy instead of red, but other than experimenting with the colour I think everything else about this piece - shape, design, the stunning collar - is perfect for the shavings! Thanks for giving it a go Jim, you manage to turn everything you touch into spectacular art!
We will revisit this again, thanks!
Simply stunning!
Thank you so much!
You have done it again! You always manage to make beautiful stuff with no pre-existing example. I am not that gifted. You rock!!!
Wow, thank you!
I like the way the wood patterns in the spalted wood collar match the swirls of the wood shavings inside. Good call Jim!
Thanks so much 😊
Still watching but I felt that catch and I haven't turned in 17 years. I second-guessed your choice in going so dark with your epoxy tint, but when you wet it for us, it looks good.
Thanks 😊
Colouring that resin was absolutely the right way to go. It makes the shavings look almost like shimmer powder. Didn't think I'd like it either, but I love it 😊
The way it looks like a dense thicket of brambles with the light inside 😮!
Thank you very much!
I think that putting the spalted wood on the top was brilliant. And putting the gloss finish brings out the detail of the wood shavings. I like the shape of the bowl as well
Thank you very much!
Nice job. I like the spalted collar. I like the piece best with light shining through it.
Thank you! 😊
It amazes me that you would ever question yourself! What a beautiful piece.
Thank you! Cheers!
Well, that's an interesting look. Busy but not. I like it!
Thanks 😊
When it was lit from the inside it reminded me of a kelp forest in the ocean. Just beautiful!
Thanks so much 😊
Clever design ! Great use of scrap material. Looks great.
Thank you very much!
I love the way you push the manufacturer's limits of their products and the end results always look spectacular. Great video as always and so enjoyable to watch. Keep'em rollin'
Glad you like them!
Can't wait to see this finished project.
Hope you like it!
@@SpragueWoodturning love it.
love the different ideals
Thank you! 😊
I love the wood shavings. They look great in the epoxy. I think the spalted maple collar was a perfect touch.
Thank you very much!
Totally agree with @bakojay8002 - I just love watching your videos. I was late catching it this week but usually try to catch some of it live if I can. Really WOW piece. I think I'd like to see another one done in a more vibrant shade or more transluscent. I love the feature collar - such a pretty wood. Thanks as always for a fantastic video and thanks to all your sponsors for helping to support the channel for our enjoyment.
Thanks so much!
I love the way the lines of the spalting pick up the curls and shapes of the shavings. Myself, I think I liked it best buffed without the coating. Lucky owner for this one!
Thanks you very much 😊
The wood at the top made this piece very elegant..
I think so too! Thanks
Bonjour Jim. It was interesting to see you express your doubts at first and then be quite satisfied with the end result. It has an almost retro look, the wood shavings giving off a burl effect; the interior lighting revealed an amazing 3D effect. Another beautiful hollow form; Well Turned, Sir!
Good luck with your laser quest.
At this date (July 7th), there are still 66 active forest fires in Québec.
Have a great week-end, stay cool, eh!
Thanks for the update and thanks for watching!
